When I was a kid for at least a few years in the 90's...probably late in the decade there was a gentleman who used to draw portraits of people.  One year my mom had him draw all of us kids...my three sisters and I, separately.  She framed them and they still hang in the entry way in my parents house.  In short, it was amazing what that guy could do.  The drawings looked like you were looking in a mirror and they were done so professionally in a relatively short amount of time.  That gentleman has not been there for awhile.  He used to hang his umbrella out sorta across the street from the tater patch...kinda by the exit of the flooded mine.  Anyone else remember or know this gentleman or his whereabouts?  I hope he is well.

p.s. these were NOT caricatures.

Love the SDC taffy shop!  But I will say that I did not enjoy the outlaw run taffy.  It starts out ok, but the sea salt at the end is a little much for me personally.  Most people must like it, however, if it is a top seller.

Mollie's Breakfast.  All you can eat of good, honest food, with a great selection and friendly service.

This.  9.29 i believe is the price.  It's all you can eat.  Nice place.  Great food.  I also will chime in that the mine restaurant is good.  Again, all you can eat and a cool place to go on a hot day.

Really?  Have you been to a restaurant lately?  The size portions and costs are spot on with the outside world.
Do I think that the prices are little high?  Yeah.  However I am also not delusional that I am going to find a deal on theme park food in a park not named Knoebel's.  Just being honest.

Part of me wishes text messaging was never invented.  As a teacher, it sickens me to see kids have conversations on cell phones.  (not during class, they don't get to do that...just outside of school when I see them, etc.)  Pick up the phone and call someone!  Or just have a conversation.  You know....verbally...in person!

There is no other park that provides the overall experience and atmosphere that SDC does.  It is so unique and family-friendly and there is so much to do and see that you can't get it all in one or two days.

Rides are what is going to bring new people to the park.  Whether people like it or not, new folks, especially younger families with kids, are going to come for the rides.  We just need to hope that the theme of the 1800's and the overall park experience will catch on and get them to come back.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to ride rides.  You can ride rides and still get in everything else.  I just did.  It's too bad these people didn't have families that took them to SDC "in the old days".  We can't hold that against them and just hope that the magic of the park catches them as it did us.  I'm sure it will with many and won't with others.

Bought a book at the old bookstore long ago about civil war in the west that featured a large section on the war in southern missouri.  There is a history around the parts, but not big enough of one for your common classes/historians to talk about.  Wilsons creek, as I recall, was actually one of the first battles of the west.

Palallin: it's cool you're a reenactor.  Going to Gettysburg this year?

I had forgotten about the strobe light and the saw. That was cool.  But I feel like that wasn't always there.  Could be wrong.  And I too miss the guy on the rock at the end.

I can understand people don't like the shoot out part of it.  The ride is still a favorite of mine, however.  Rode it twice this year and enjoyed both times.  I remember when the wait for that ride was much longer...and you would actually have to wait on the bridge and stop by the guard house thing and have time to look in it the line was so long.  Haven't had that in a long time thanks to the new rides.  Hope new people find their way to it.

I'd like to point out that rides will get people there and interested.  There was a time when my life at SDC revolved around riding thunderation 4,323 times every day.  The city grew on me because we kept going and coming back and now they have a lifer in me who will bring all of his children to the park every year.  I imagine that will happen a lot because of new thrill rides.

Don't get me wrong, I hate seeing things go and that's only been for the last 20 years.  Some of you on here probably have thirty and forty years of memories and have seen things gone.  I'm just glad it is still so old-school and full of great themes.  They still use guns in skits, etc.  There's still religion.  There's still patriotism. Most parks in the country can't say that.

Happy to report, as others have, that I saw the sign.  Wonderful work of art.  And there were books around the city of course, but it was nothing like before.  I remember buying a book called "a man called shiloh" about the civil war and the author was there to sign the books.  Don't get that anymore.  Also, the knife shop was out of Ray's poetry books.  I hope they will put more up.

Mine restaurant stopped bringing cornbread out but if you ask for it they will bring it.

Rube, I agree.  The woodcarver shop espescially. It was....disappointing....this year and we made no purchases. My dad used to buy soemthing every year as he is a wood carver.  No more little hillbilly characters, either.

And to those who want good food it can be found.  The skillets (tater patch is best!!) and that burger place up on the square is excellent, excellent burgers.  Along with the mine, mill, etc.

Excellent show...especially good when the right actors are there.  I'd put it up against any singing/acting show in branson pound for pound.

As I told my dad this year, "Well...looks like the kids can't come to SDC next year.  Adult themes only."  ;)

SDC always was and always is a kids fest...some kids are just a lot older.  What I did like about it was some of the shows like the magician and the dogs, but when I was a kid the show for a few years was the civil war show about the battle of (drawing a blank) creek near Branson.  I loved it.  And I was a kid.  Way more historical and educational.

Forgot to mention we hit the dog show Monday and it was excellent.  Also the new facilities that were mentioned are very nice.
