I've been a stranger here over the past few months, but...

I wondered if anyone has ever volunteers as part of a mom-profit group to work at the park? It is an opportunity available for in food service where you will work alongside Silver Dollar City employees serving and plating food, cleaning, and bussing tables.
Recently I looked into the program for our school group and this weekend received the dates on which the park is using volunteers in positions. Hopefully we will be able to make it all work, with a small group, and the times are during the holiday season, so volunteers were at a minimum for us, but I hope to do this to both help raise money for our school group, but also to be a bigger part of the SDC for, if only a day. The $8 hr money goes directly to our organization.

As a 34+ year / lifelong guest of the park, the "expert" for the roller coaster show last year, and a former art/ now a history teacher, I have always wanted to work at SDC for at least a day. Granted I know more than many that work at the park about the history of the area, and formation of the park, it is not above me to make someone's experience better through fulfilling their basic needs while at the park. I will take whatever I can get! Though this is not the only time I plan on ever working at the park, this is enough to check it off of my bucket list for "working" at SDC that has been a goal for me since I was a child (I have sat and made baskets that were sold while the Basketmaker Bob warmed his hands on a cold day, been an honorary Brown's candy maker for a day, been in several street performances...but nothing that allowed me to wear an SDC nametag!)

If we are accepted, and all is a go, I'll be sire to let you guys know to come and see me and put me to work!

Random Talk / Kentucky Colonel
January 18, 2014, 11:22:20 PM
I received my commission today as an Honorable Colonel of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Any others on here? It is a decision and appointment by the Governor of KY after a person is nominated by a previously commissioned Colonel. Happened very quickly, and so honored to be a part of a group that includes Colonel Sanders (yes thats where his title came from ) Elvis , Pope John Paul II, Roy Rodgers, Winston Churchill and many others...that uphold the tradition and values of The Great Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Next on to working at the Tennessee Squire...any one here a Squire or know one that can help me out? I do great artwork as thank you gifts ;)

SDC Memories/ Park History / Collectible Pin
September 29, 2013, 09:16:23 PM
My name is Matt, and I am a collector. There, I have said it, the first step is admitting it. I have many things from many times and places, some worth more than others. Some rare, some ass produced and readily available.

I have been searching for some time for a pin from Silver Dollar City-The Rube Dugan's Diving Bell pin. Had I known when it was offered about it, I would have bought two, something that I hope someone has done. Now the question...

Does anyone out there have the Rube Dugan's Diving Bell Pin? I would be willing to pay, trade (I have an extensive collection of items), barter, paint (yes I am a painter). believe me, you'd get the good end of a deal!

Personal Message me, or find me through my contact info is anyone has a lead!

Thanks so much.

Random Talk / Where is the Best Pizza?
June 18, 2013, 01:53:58 PM
With our recent talks about pizza at WW and the recent addition of Outlaw Run Pizza...
Where is the BEST Pizza You have eaten?
Chains, mom and pop, wherever...where is it?

Is it the thin and foldable like New York's Lombardi's or Ray's etc?
Is it the thin and crunchy and covered in provel in St. Louis' Imos or Stefanina's etc?
Is it the deep dish eaten with a knife and fork like Chicago's Malnati's or Giordano's etc?
Is it the thick and chewy like at Pizza Hut, Dewey's etc?

Let the debate begin!!!
I want places people!

It's our sixth year with this game, and we have still yet to run out of stumpers.
Get ready for a season full of NEW surprises.

The last 2 seasons Pintrader was the champ...we will see if he can successfully defend his titles and have a three-pete!

You can look at the last season or two of the game to see it in action:
2010:  http://sdcfans.com/forums/index.php?topic=668.0
2011:  http://sdcfans.com/forums/index.php?topic=1478.0
2012:  http://sdcfans.com/forums/index.php?topic=2038.0

It is one of the most popular boards on the forum. From time to time, on a very irregular basis, so no one can predict and lurk waiting for the newest clue, I will post a picture of an item, a sign, or a portion of such.  The first person to correctly identify its location in the park gets a point. It will start...today!!!!, and end on the last day of the season or thereabouts!...start studying folks!

Random Talk / Instagram
January 17, 2013, 12:20:08 PM
I know many are pretty active with Smartphones and apps...
I am pretty active on Instagram and have had a few of my photos shared on the @explorebranson site, as well as the Silver Dollar City facebook site.

I picked up a technique this year using multiple lenses to take some artistic photos. Let me know what you think...

Random Talk / New Year's Resolutions
January 06, 2013, 08:56:18 PM
Anyone out there try to keep something going in the New Year?

I hope to have one artwork per week completed during 2013 (or an avg. of 1 per week)

Week one is hopefully good enough for Andymeets1880s, it is a carved buttstock of an Enfield Confederate Rifle for the QSCR in Arkansas.

I plan on posting my progress on my Instagram feed. Rubedugans if you wanna look me up!

Branson Talk / Pink Gorilla
December 31, 2012, 09:40:50 AM
On Saturday 12/29 I witnessed what I think might have been a devastating event in Branson. While driving from the Landing towards the City on 76, we passed a flatbed with not just any Pink Gorilla on the back, but the now iconic Dicken's Gift Shoppe Pink Gorilla being taken away...now maybe just for the winter, but if it is not back in the Spring, at least I will know that I was there to see the last Hurrah of the Pink Gorilla.

Branson Talk / Resort Fire-Indian Point
October 22, 2012, 08:20:13 AM
According to KY3:
INDIAN POINT VILLAGE, Mo--A fire at a Branson-area resort is believed to have started on a back deck.  The flames broke out around 10:30 in the business office of the White Wing Resort Sunday night.  The resort is just south of Silver Dollar City.
Firefighters say they faced some challenges trying to get the fire extinguished.  "The fire was difficult because the building's been chopped up and cut up over the years and added on to so there's a lot of hidden roofs and hidden ceilings inside.  So we needed an excessive amount of water to put the fire out.  We attempted to establish a water supply from the lake but ended up running water from hydrants up at Silver Dollar City," said Mike Creswell, Fire Marshal with the Southern Stone County Fire District.

The building is a total loss, but no other structures were damaged.  There were no reports of injuries.
http://www.ky3.com/news/ky3-resort-office-destroyed-after-a-fire-sunday-night-20121022,0,3804468.story

I am quite familiar with this place as I have been staying here since 1982, and was even in their ad brouchure for a couple of years. The Daily's-the present owners- bought the resort in 2001 and rebuilt many of the cabins, except their own-the office structure. The family has been through hell in the past several years, and I know this is not what they needed, but at least all are safe.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Run to the Lights 2012
September 02, 2012, 09:19:08 PM
On November 9, 2012 at 10:15 pm the 7th annual Run to the Lights will take place at Silver Dollar City. Run to the Lights is "the premier fall race in Ozark Mountain Country. The race benefits  The Caring People, an organization that reaches out to Single Moms with unconditional love founded by Silver Dollar City co-owners JoDee and Peter Herschend."

I have never been healthy enough (I was a collegiate runner and was/ am injured for 5 years, not a smoker or overweight!) and my planning never matched up with the race registration. The enrollment/ registration opened up yesterday for anyone that wants to take on the city in a race has very little time to get registered!

Who needs the ringtones when you have the Soundboard app? Wait I am the only one that has this? Just press the button and the sound  plays! No wait for someone to call you so that you can hear the Frisco whistle, or for the serene sounds of the waterfall. Man it is great being a techie! I created a lesson for my class on how to create an interactive application (all but publish it) using pretty basic software, and this is my example for them. Now I can get my SDC fix whenever I need it! Let me know what you think! I'd love to talk to SDC to have them actually allow this to be used by people other than myself!

It plays:
Cave drips/ sounds
Church bell ringing
Flooded mine song
FITH song
Train whistle
Blacksmith Anvil/ hammering
Horse Bridge
Waterfall
Saloon piano

Random Talk / Hotel Impossible
May 29, 2012, 08:38:28 PM
The Southern Oaks Inn was chosen to be featured on the Travel Channels' show "Hotel Impossible". The show, hosted by Anthony Melchiorri will air Monday 6/ 4 (thanks for the correction!) @ 9pm on the Travel Channel. Located at 3295 Shepherd of the Hills Expressway, I am excited to see how the Inn and the area in general are portrayed.

"Southern Oaks Inn: Branson, MO
Anthony heads to Branson, MO, where owners of the Southern Oaks Inn are in a power struggle for the hotel's leadership. From management to marketing to décor, Anthony must fix these deep-rooted issues in order for the hotel to survive."

Ahh Sarsaparilla.....
I will be the first to admit it, I have an addicton. Now we all gather here because our obsessions/ addictions run in relatively the same circles, here is my story.

Mine drink obsession is to Sioux City Sarsaparilla (and the other various products-but mostly the Sarsaparilla). My wife knows it has been a tough day not by alcohol, but by the sarsaparilla being out when she gets home. It is included as bonus questions on my students tests in my class "what is Mr.____'s favorite soda?"
It is tough for them to not know seeing that this is now hanging on my wall....

I made this last week out of some spare sheet metal, plexiglass, and enamel paint after wondering how to enshrine my normal paperweight of a bottle of soda (they usually last about a week before I have to get a new paperweight!). Good thing I payed attention in Jr. High shop class when I made that tool box!

More posts to come on my Sioux City collection.

Announcements / Where is Rube?
December 29, 2011, 04:25:20 PM
You might find that you are asking yourself this in the next few months...and this should clear it up!

It has been one of those years. I am trying to think about where another year has gone, and boy have I been busy! I have been trying to keep up with my Wayback thread, as well as the Where in the city game. I know this is Announcements, but I firstly want to apologize for the change in the amount of my activity as of lately.

My main reason for the lack of activity on the site has been that my wife and I have added to the SDC fanbase. Next season I will be finding out how strollers fit onto trams, how to fight crowds and the elements with a baby, and how the park feels while showing my daughter for the first time. We welcomed our first child in October, and man has it been a busy couple of weeks!

I have also begun a new position teaching a new class at school (one that involves extensive amounts of planning to help students reach their potential) and this has taken a great amount of my time. Also I took a new position at school as the Information Web Specialist (Webmaster) which entails a lot of work building the full site by Jan. 3, 2012. One semester on top of the other stuff was barely enough time (I just finished it this afternoon!).

I have 2 big artworks (portraits) to begin this winter, and I am finishing up another for a pretty big client. I am working with Rich on the QSCR logos and designs, and I have 2-3 book ideas to sort out details on, as well as a few bucket list things I would like to begin.

The next few months I will be continuing to learn to be a Daddy while trying to work on some of my other wants/ needs. I might not be too active Jan-Mar, but I plan on resuming my duties, and pages when the season starts in 2012. I will have my email updates active, and if anything comes up that I want to add to, I will jump on in! If you need my send me a message!
