I sure hope we can find a way to sign Holliday to a contract at season's end.

Me too.  I keep fearing that his price keeps going up, he is playing so well (plus his agent is Boras, yuck!).  (Note:  Despite this fear I definitely hope he keeps it up).  He's making $13.5 million this year and will be a free agent.  Pujols is making $16 million, and he'd have to be willing to sign for less than Pujols is making because Pujols has to be your highest paid player.  If St. Louis (the team, the city, especially the fans) can win him over maybe he'd be willing to play here for a little less than he'd make somewhere else.  We'll see.  I also hope we can sign DeRosa, and Lugo will be here next year (with Boston paying his full salary for us!  Yay!)

I was impressed with Boggs last night.  The kid really has poise.  He got in jams, but he was able to work his way out of them.  That's what a big league pitcher does.

Our big move was to get two pitchers from the pirates- don't know much about them yet-adding pitching is usually a good thing.

^It wasn't really a big move.  You got Grabow, a LH reliever, and Gorzelanny, a LH starter.  Neither has spectacular numbers, but they're both decent.  Grabow's thrown about 50 innings in relief so far this year with a 3.42 ERA and .246 BAA.  Gorzelanny's more of a question mark as he's pitched only 8.2 innings so far this year, spending most of his time in AAA.  We'll see how he does, as he'll be starting Tuesday.

Thanks for the info- I meant "big move" in the sarcastic vain.

^No problem, and you're welcome. :)  Not a big move, but they both look to be nice additions to a pitching staff nonetheless.

WOW!  Carpenter pitched a gem tonight, one mistake that C. Lee took over the fence.  Holliday...2 HR's and continues to carry the team during Albert's "slump," which hopefully won't last much longer.  He (AP) hit the ball hard a couple of times tonight and was more selective of the pitches he swung at, usually a good sign of starting to come out of it.

Mo said in an interview that they were going to do everything they could to sign Holliday and DeRosa.  And, I don't think Albert would mind a bit if Holliday made a little more than he does...if that's what it takes.  He'd be tickled pink just to have Holliday on the team.  As would we all.
"Why do they call them Wild Women?"

A crazy win by the cubs to keep pace- At least the hitting is coming around.

The Cubs led the NL in July with 36 homers.

^^If, and it's a big IF, Holliday signs with the Cards before free agency in November I think he'll have to be paid more than Pujols for a little while.  If Pujols signs an extension (and Mo' and DeWitt have both said they will start negotations with AP this coming off-season) he will be signed for more than Holliday makes.  That's a given.  What worries me is his agent is Scott Boras and the fact that the Rockies offered him a 4 yr, $72 million contract this past off-season that he turned down, resulting in his trade to Oakland.

^The Cubs played 18 of their 27 games in July in the friendly confines of Wrigley, and the ball really carries in Wrigley in July, so that definitely helped the HR total.  Although Wrigley is nothing like Minute Maid, Citizens Bank, or new Yankee Stadium. :)

Wow, the pointy fish really did a number on the baby bears today! Blown game on two consecutive pitches!

Baby bears have a hard time winning away from Wrigley Field.  They are 22-29 away from their friendly confines of the "a pop-fly is a home run here" stadium.

Man talk about a weird day though, how often do both the Cards and cubs lose on the same day?  Seems like it is one or the other but never both.

Cubs will finally make up one of their "5 less games played this season" tomorrow as the Cards have the day off and the Cubs will go to the "hard to win at for them" Great American Ball Park in Cincy.

Our only hope of winning is that fact that we are playing the reds.

Swoosh

Oh yeah.  If the Cubs lose it will be because the Cubs beat themselves and their whole "we can't win at the Great American Ballpark" kick they get on every so often.... and not because it's the Reds

The season continues on. :)

Chicago Cubs 56 48       .538
St. Louis 58 50             .537
Milwaukee 52 53            495 4.5
Houston 52 53               495 4.5
Cincinnati 45 60             429 11.5
Pittsburgh 45 60            429 11.5

Interesting that the Cubs have STILL played the fewest number of games in the Central and the Cards have STILL played the most.

Yes, its always good when a team can get in a few more days off.
