General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: The Train Holdup Skit

Oh, I agree with the occasional blunder, but these guys blew the whole skit.  Once the train started back, it was like everyone thought "what was that all about?"  I guess it falls in the category of "you should have been there" because it really was bad.

Jedi-  a lot of what you described was the old "Jim Owen's float trip" which is where the American Plunge now stands.  The large wooden bridge had the sounds of horses crossing it back then as well.  It still does today, but it is turned down so low, you really can't pick up on it.  At one end of the bridge, there was a "ticket booth" where a person used to sit, but today they have a dummy stationed inside.

Yep, back in the day, they certainly played the "baldknobber" image to the hilt.  That was the riders you heard crossing the bridge.  About the only mention of them today is on Fire in the Hole.  I did notice Monday that they turned the sound up on the monologue outside the ride.  (Even as a kid in the early 70's I would sit under the trees and listen...and I still do today!)  Certainly the GOOD OLD DAYS.

Over the weekend, the group I was with began discussing how they think Branson hit it's peak in the mid 90's.  As we drove around the area, we notice all the empty buildings and theaters that are for sell.  Pretty sad looking in some places.

If they cannot get employees to take the characters a little more serious, then they should do away with it.  I was there Monday and it was just flat terrible.  There was only "Alfie" and the conductor and all they wanted to do was try to get each other to fall out of character which ended up just looking stupid out there.  Alfie was even trying to knock the conductors hat off with his "stick" during the monologue.  Very unprofessional and I might add a little embarrassing.

One thing I noticed this past weekend was that the GE seems to be about 10 degrees hotter than the rest of the park as well.  Probably because there are only a few SHADE TREES.  I'm not much of a fan of the GE, but my 6 year old LOVES the "Hopping Frogs".

I'll also put my 2 cents in on "genuine citizens".  I was VERY disappointed in the train this year.  I only rode it once, but the robbery was terrible.  The conductor and "Alfie" seemed to get off track then they started messing with each other.  (Alfie tried several times to knock the conductors hat off with the stick)  This is TOTALLY out of character.  Another example (and the one that made me angry) was when the conductor says the line about giving him another belly button....well, he didn't even say it.  He just blurted out some mumbling and ran off because they were more interested in trying to make the other character laugh.  If Mary had been on that train, she probably would have jumped off and fired them on the spot!  They really did blow the entire gig that bad.  And, like you good people said, they are getting too far away from "SDC" and simply becoming an amusement park.  While I agree that they are lightyears ahead of places like 6 flags and WOF, I hate to see them slip and fall backwards only to end up like another amusement park "with trees".

I was there Monday as well StaceySue!  There were A LOT of folks that left once the rides started shutting down.  I was checking on going on the cave tour when this flood of people hit us.  We simply walked around and checked out the shops a while, then they opened all the rides back up and we were back in business.  Stayed there from opening till closing.  First time I ever spent 12 1/2 hours in the City!  What a blast.  We ended up taking the final tour of Monday night at 8:30 and the bats were crazy at that time.  I almost was hit several times during the tour. :o

Same here.  During my childhood, it was always SDC and SOTH.  Didn't really do much of the Branson thing.  Of course back then it was only the Presley's and the Baldknobbers.  Nonetheless, those were the only two things we did.  I miss the old days where you could drive for miles outside of "branson"  before making it to SOTH.  I miss seeing "Jim Lane's" cabin and all the remarks relating to the story.  Also, back then, they tried to make out like the story was true and everything was factual.  I also remember when taking the Homestead tour, they would take you by "Mad Howard and Little Pete's" cave and describe how they found his living quarters in the back of the cave, but it caved in and is no longer accessable.  Oh well....the good old days!

Bandana's has excellent BBQ.  Way out north on Gretna in a strip mall.  I go there every chance I get.  Of course I didn't go last time because I was full of BBQ from SDC from the Bluegrass and BBQ festival!  Give it a try though.  Just pass on the boiled peanuts though...too slimy for me!
