SDC in your backyard!
« on: May 19, 2010, 11:47:47 AM »
Anyone try to decorate their backyard like SDC? Does anyone have any suggestions of some small things to do, that would give the backyard, that SDC feel?  Sights, Sounds, Smells, Atmosphere pieces?

I never tried to do anything in my backyard.  The only thing I have done is kept all my sacks and bags from SDC and used them for wrapping paper for my Christmas presents.

Just soak the whole thing in creosote.  That should give you the distinct SDC smell!

I have honestly wondered this, and have never really found a good layout for my yard. You could paint similar signs to some of the attractions (as an artist I think this is the easiest) A sign in the vegetable garden with an arrow saying FRISCO or a post that is M*A*S*H* -sque that says Branson--->427 miles with an arrow or something like that....just my thoughts

Ironically there is a railroad that runs right through my backyard...literally.  We just bought a house that originally sold part of their plot to CSX and Amtrak.  You step outside, sit in a lawn chair and can smell the creosote.

If you pass through Orlando by train, I'm pretty easy to find!

I, too, have the r/r 50" behind my backyard, but I'd rather hear the whistle vs the annoying horn!  Over the years I've divided the yard up into 4 sections, landscaping, fences, gazebo, benches, 2 water features (1 runs year round) and many rusty old farm pieces.  My dream is to build a mini shot tower & waterwheel :)  I'll try to add pics to my flicker account~

"p.s."  I have several original signs from SDC, but they will remain indoors... ::)

As a kid in southeast Missouri, my brother and I built Silver Dollar City out of cardboard boxes and marking pens a couple of times. The highlight was when the Baldknobbers attacked, and the whole place went up in flames! Luckily, there was a large concrete pad in our backyard, and a waterhose was nearby just in case. Nobody was hurt and no damage was done (other than to the cardboard boxes).  :)

Oh, by the way, I'm not the only "future" employee of SDC who as a kid had their own SDC in the backyard. I found an old late 80's era interview Terry Sanders gave to a regional magazine, and he was quoted as saying he built his own SDC, too. General Store, Blacksmith Shop, and so on.

I like the input so far!!! Ya'll are really startin to get my wheels turnin! So far i just have a faded would privacy fence, and a lean-to/bar to cover the smoker. I'm really wanting to start adding to it, I just haven't had any good ideas on my own.

I also have 1 original sign, and one of the 1960's map/brochure holders you would encounter upon entering the park. I also have a huge tintype of the train that once hung outside at the depot. Also like Tinman too valueable for me to place outdoors again!

Make a sound effects CD of carts backing up and play in on a loop.

Instead of a grill, stick a big skillet on the patio.

Put a smoking area behind the storage shed.

Make up some signs to honor family members' years of service.
