If the Cardinals win both games this weekend the magic number will be basically "0" as 10 games back (the Cubs) going into September is basically a "death wish" for a club this late in the season.

Count 'em --- 10 GAMES BACK!!!

I would think it is safe to say the Cardinals have now clinched the Central.

^It's a safe assumption.  Let's put it this way:  If the Cards play .500 ball the rest of the way (15-15) they would finish 92-70.  In order to even tie for the division lead at the end of the season the Cubs would have to play .794 ball the rest of the way (27-7)!

So, it's highly unlikely that we will fail to win the division. 8)

BTW, our magic number is now...

I have to admit, I've been surprised at how tough the Nats are playing, both against us and Chicago. They're hitting the field like they're playing for the wild card, when they're almost 40 games under .500!

sdcforever

^Yeah, the Nats are playing tough.  The difference, though, is that the Nats took 2 of 3 from the Cubs and then we swept the Nats! :D

Do I hear 10.5 games back and another game off the magic number?
Yes I do believe I do. :D

Hey what happened to ThemeParkGuy?  He sure has become quiet. lol

I hope Pineiro pitches well tonight.  I've been impressed with him this year; he deserves a better record as he didn't get much run support through the first half of the season.  It will be interesting to see how Looper is received at Busch tonight too.

I'm pretty excited as my friend Brian (who lives in St. Peters, MO) called me last night a little before 10 and told me he had two tickets to the Cards game Wednesday night and asked me if I wanted to come.  He attempted to sell his offer further (as if I needed anymore convincing! ;D) by saying, "Apparently there's a really good pitcher pitching". :D  (Brian is a Cards fan, but only a casual one).  Of course I said yes!  I'm really pumped because I haven't been to a Cards game since June 18, 2002 (I will never forget the date as it was Darryl Kile's last start and the day Jack Buck passed away).  This will be my first game at new Busch, I'll get to see Carp pitch, and watch Pujols, Holliday, and the rest swing away! :)

I will be at the game Wednesday night, too. I'm also going Thursday.

sdcforever

^Cool!  You should just camp at the park since Thursday is a 1:15 game. ;)

I hope you get to see two strong pitching performances from Carp and Smoltz.

A rare two game win streak for the cubs. Were not done yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o

Swoosh

Doesn't matter if the Cards keep winning.

What's going to happen when the Cubs leave the Little League Ballpark and go to a field that actually has an "outfield" ?

^^Had a lot of fun at the ballpark last night!  It's nice to see our offense come alive for two consecutive games!

^Not only will it be hard for the Cubs if the Cards keep winning, but being 6 games back and looking up at 4 teams for the wild card doesn't help either.  The Cubs will have to get white hot to even take the wild card (and San Francisco and Colorado will have to cool off as well).

Magic Number is now 20!

saladdays

With both Cards and Cubs losing, magic number is now 19.

Swoosh

So with the cubs being 11.5 games back now, can we just go ahead and make the magic number zero?  There's no chance they can come back from that many games down
