Branson Stand Off
« on: July 01, 2010, 07:56:16 AM »
A man wanted in Texas  charged in an April murder was taken into custody after a 9 hour stand off in Branson. Associated Press reports that Mark Simmons, 51, was taken into custody at Branson Tuesday with no shots fired. An officer spotted a vehicle matcing the description of one used in the holdup of two Branson motels. Extradition is pending to Hays County, Texas.

This sounds like it was a great success for Branson law enforcement, but I bet it was a pain for traffic.  I understand that section of 76 was blocked for a large portion of the time.  Imagine being evacuated from your hotel room because this man was in another with a pretty good arsenal of his own.  Imagine also being the suspect and getting a phone call in your hotel room from the police.

I'll be very blunt here...probably way more so than Branson officials would like me to be...but I'm a former broadcast journalist and I don't like it when I see local media NOT doing their job and reporting all the stories that go on in their area that are important to cover. There have been many serious incidents in Branson over the years you have heard nothing about in the media...local business and civic officials want a lot of the stuff buried so people will not be afraid to visit. They want you to think Branson is crime free. It is not. As the population has grown, as visits to Branson have grown, crime has gone up. You'll notice in the top entry on this thread it mentions a string of motel robberies. I know for a fact there have been increases in purse snatchings, and other related crimes. Shoplifting, not a serious issue at SDC in my time, is a daily occurance...and people are escorted off park each day for attempted theft. In the '90's I subscribed to a Branson newspaper, and a tiny story was covered like this: Local police arrested an out of town man for assaulting a woman at a Branson motel located on Highway 76, the woman was treated and released from Skaggs Hospital...That was about it in
the story. If I would have turned a news story in for reading on the air like that, my boss would have gone nuts. That story should have the suspect's name, age, hometown, and list of charges brought against him. It should say what motel it happened at, and at what time and date. It would detail damage done at the location, The story would not have given the victim's name, but it would include her age and hometown. With that said, do I think Branson is still a pretty safe place to vacation...YES...I would not hesitate to take my family to vacation there. However, local civic, business, and media entities are wrong to cover up things that go on in their area that seem negative. Truth and an open "sunshine" policy are always the best way to go. Ignorance is not bliss. I should note, even way back in my day in Branson some 25 to 30 years ago, the media didn't always do it's job about stories like this. The local powers that be have always tried to quell coverage of those things. I should note, this also goes on in every other community across the country to this day. I covered news in dozens of communities in MO and AR over 20 years and there is always a handful of local hotshots that want to try to control what the media covers.  ALL THIS SAID...TAKE YOUR FAMILY TO BRANSON AND ENJOY A NICE VACATION.

Junior, your post is a good wakeup call for all of us.  I used to think the only thing the Branson police had to worry about was finding lost dentures and traffic jams at 9 O'clock when all the shows let out.  But things have apparently gotten worse.

A friend of ours lost the only key to his VW on park last week, and had to rent a van and a trailer to take it home because a new key has to come from Germany, takes a week or two and costs about $200.  (That's highway robbery right there!)  While they were loading the car onto the trailer in the SDC parking lot somebody came up and stole a borrowed log chain they had laying on the pavement in case they needed it!  And all this with people sitting in a car just a few feet away!
In His grip!

I was in nearby Hollister this week, and was surprised to hear the standoff information. It was the day after before we heard anything. The radio gave plenty of details where as the television news glanced over it all together. I have often wondered what things are like in Branson for police, but with so many coming and going through the area, I am sure they keep busy. Just because it is a Christian based company in a fairly Conservative, law abiding area of the country doesn't mean that this is all that is attracted to the region.

I once applied for a job with the local Branson radio station and they gave me a tour of their operations and some background info about their news department. They worked pretty hard about 15 years ago to establish a good news department. It took them five years to gain the confidence and trust of locals since previous radio station owners only did the "fluff" stuff. There are two newspapers in Branson. One does "happy" "fluff" news, the other does real, hard news like the radio station. Forget TV, no local TV does real hard news on Branson. The walls are slowly being broken down, but the powers that be still resist. The radio station told me they had an industrial accident at College of the Ozarks that occurred on a Saturday. (This was many years ago, probably 8-10 years ago) The public relations dept. at the school wanted to put "spin" on the incident, and hold off news media until midway through the next Monday morning. Local radio would not go for it. They gave the school a chance to respond, and when they started the "spin" the radio station personnel went to other sources...eyewitnesses...and then got the truth. The first reports on the accident aired within an hour or so after the accident. That's pretty good for a local media outlet in anytown. However, much of the hard news still does not get released. Again, with all that said, YOU WILL BE SAFE GOING TO BRANSON. ENJOY A VACATION THERE WITH FAMILY.

Do the police have a helicopter?  That would be important something to look into if they don't?

Are any of you saying or implying that the police department is corrupted - modern day Bald Knobbers?

Don't think Branson PD has a helicopter...but State Highway Patrol does, and it could be called in to service if needed.

Corruption? Nah, don't think so. What I'm talking about are the power brokers in the area that don't like any negative news whatsoever. They want it all to be mom, God, apple pie, and all American. They think negative stories will have a negative impact on the tourism.

This explains why Tulsa no longer has an amusement park. Seems like you have to wear a bullet proof vest and call in a napalm strike just to stop for a tank of gas. "Cover me, I'm filling up!!" In other words, crime is a big issue here as well, and we've lost our beloved Bell's amusement park to boot. Now there's a parking lot where it used to be. That's "progress" for ya.
No matter where you go, there you are.
