My parents' honeymoon in Silver Dollar City - May 1960
« on: June 18, 2010, 09:32:54 PM »
Some of you with an interest in old photos might appreciate this.  My parents honeymooned in Silver Dollar City in May of 1960, right after the park opened.  I just sent these photos to the marketing department there in case they're interested, but thought I'd post them here too.

They'll be in the next few posts if I can't post them all here.

There's another one that's kind of cool, but my mom's in it so I probably shouldn't post it.

The funny story is that we just celebrated my parents' 50th wedding anniversary, and their wish was to go to Silver Dollar City with the family.  Completely unrelated to that, I asked them to bring their old photo albums to the hotel in Branson so I could scan some old family photos for my own collection.  (I live out of state and don't come to Missouri very often.)

As we were looking through the photos, we were surprised to see that their honeymoon 50 years earlier had been to Silver Dollar City.  They hadn't really thought about it either until we saw the photos.  I thought the symmetry of two visits 50 years apart was kind of cool.

You know as a thought.
I am viewing the pictures and thinking how it looks similar and I know what I am looking at but things also look much different. The touches that have been added through the years really show in these pictures, or the absence really shows.  Many, myself included have critiqued on the changes they have made in the past " years" I think this set of pictures gives me another perspective on these thoughts.
Maybe the changes made aren't all bad, these pictures look really plain.
A little lesson for myself.........wait before you make up your mind

ps: I wish your parents the best...

Yeah, the funny thing is that old pictures of a place that is designed to look old may have a somewhat muted impact.  These places are supposed to look kind of beat up, both then and now.

You know after seeing that Marvel Cave train car and comparing it to todays, I'm not real sure I would have been real quick about getting inside that thing! lol

The photos are great.

My folks divided their honeymoon between Rockaway Beach and Marvel Cave Park, back in 1952.  Mom has a couple pictures.  She has one in which she is sitting on the seat of the covered wagon with the words "Marvel Cave Park" on the cover.  I need to borrow them for scanning and posting.
"Why do they call them Wild Women?"

My parents went to Branson on there honeymoon in 1969, Dad was just about to ship out with the Navy. They didn't go to SDC because it was December and back then SDC  was not open at that time of year. I recall something about them getting snowed in, but that's about as much detail as I wanted to hear. {{{full body shiver}}}
