Sister in Law got an apartment for work in Branson so I got to use it this weekend.  Nice little occasional perk.

My wife and I made our way over to SDC last weekend, joined by the rest of my family (parents and 3 younger siblings). This was the first time at SDC in years for my parents and sister, and my younger brothers had never been. In fact they had only experienced a theme park once before, Legoland in CA when they were probably 3 to 5 years old. All of us had a blast. We all enjoyed the Bluegrass groups (especially the Kruger Brothers), but my parents wound up watching the shows alot more than me, my wife, and siblings did. We hit up all the big rides lot and lots of times. :-) In two days we probably hit Powderkeg (our favorite) about 10 times, Wildfire twice, and Thunderation 7 or 8 times. It was a bit chilly Saturday, but much nicer Sunday. Definitely enjoyed ourselves and got lots of good food. The BBQ was just alright, I prefer Famous Dave's in town still. That said, the giant apple pie was amazing. As was the blasted onion over at Flossie's (first time having one of those). Also had Andy's Frozen Custard in town on 76 for the first time... amazing custard. Easily the best I've had anywhere. Highly recommend it.

I think this may be our last trip over for a while... the interesting festivals kind of die out for us till fall. Definitely planning on hitting up the harvest fest and old time christmas when they roll around though.
SDC Annual Passholder since 2011. I'm a new guy. :)

2011 SDC Visits: Spring Break Days, World Fest, Bluegrass & BBQ, Southern Gospel Picnic (upcoming!)

great review, congrats on all the riding, that does not usually happen!

Duelist

We just got back from a couple of days at the City and I'm happy to say the only music we heard on the City Square at the opening ceremonies was the "You have a great past ahead of you at SDC" and the usual patriotic songs at flag raising.  Speaking of music we got to catch 3 Bluegrass bands: IIIrd Generation Bluegrass, Monroeville (who did a very cool bluegrass version of "La Bamba"); and the Picking Chicks.  All were very good.  I didn't notice any downtime on any of the rides.  A couple of times on Saturday my daughter and I rode Thunderation with only about 8 other riders.  The lines for Thunderation were longer earlier Saturday and today but that's because they were only running one train.  A fun weekend!

I have a question for anyone that has been to the park say in the last couple of days how are the cicadas. Here at our house in St. Louis they are bad. Just wondering how they are at the park?

I just returned from both a trip to Jefferson City, and SDC.

Jefferson City was worse than StL (where I live). It was as if every leaf on every tree in any given area had either a shell, or a cicada.

As for SDC, I saw one this morning on the square emerging from it's shell, but that was it. I am sure if I had been looking more closely they would have been evident. I cannot say I saw any others IN the park, but maybe others can say differently.

Does anyone know why they have blocked people from walking into the cemetery in front of FITH?  I am posting a couple of pictures from today showing boards that were put in front of the walkways.  They have been up for a while because I noticed them back on a May 15th visit.

I saw these yesterday as well. I was unsure if I had missed them back in April, but I don't like it! The cemetery needs new headstones (I will volunteer to hand paint the words on them again for free!) and new boots, but could easily be back to it's former glory with a very minimal amount of money and a bit of work.

ALSO I have no photos, but they are doing some construction on the outer edge of the square between the Homestead, and the Apple Butter Shop/ Taffy Shop. It had until this year held a small shack/ but now there are many stones, leading me to believe that they are fixing and /or constructing a wall.

i noticed last time there the headstone were leaning and "loose" in the ground. i wondered if it was easier to block off the sidewalk than to fix them back up.

Here are a couple of pictures of the new construction between the Homestead and the Apple Butter Shop.  It could possibly be just a wall or it kind of looks like it might be a foundation for a building.  I guess I should have asked the man that was working what he was building, but never thought to ask.

Interesting, looks like a low wall for a new outdoor demonstration. Maybe they're moving the apple butter demonstrations here. Definitely not for a building though.
