6+ here and we still had school.  We're "tough" let me tell you.

Cold buses?  I haven't ridden a bus in the winter that wasn't a sauna.  While we're protecting them from that "cold" bus, or from their wait at the bus stop, or from their ignorance in wearing shorts, they are sledding and having snowball fights in the very same cold air.  I'm just saying the parents who are working and aren't home to properly prepare their children for the weather also aren't there to dress their children for freely roving the streets.

On soap box now:

Anyway, I get kind of tired of "protecting" kids from their ignorant parents.  At some point the school needs to give the responsibility back to the family.  Our primary purpose is to educate, and yet we are raising these kids - feeding them two or three meals a day, clothing them, providing their supplies, handing them turkeys for Thanksgiving, driving them to and from class, paying their contest entry fees, soliciting Christmas gifts for them.  We even entertain them after school hours because their parents aren't off work or won't schedule childcare.  Yet, we can't discipline them without doing a ton of paperwork to cover our fannies and we can't discipline them without fear of retaliation or a lawsuit.  Pretty soon, the schools - even the elementary schools - will build dormitories to house the students, and the teachers will be required to stay on campus around the clock to supervise them in the evening hours and while they sleep.

I am benevolent, and I love my students, but at some point they need to learn to be responsible for themselves.  Protecting them from ignorance just may not be the best approach.

...departing soap box now.

Not sure it counts as a snow day, but my kids were out today due to a thin layer of ice that is coating everything. On the plus side, I only fell twice on my way in from the parking lot.

^^Yeah that counts, though I guess it should count as an ice day.  I remember how those Oklahoma winters are, and the road crews still do a horrible job of clearing the streets and highways for motorists.  I do not miss that part of living in the Sooner State.

Seriously?  Yeah we went the entire day of school.  They didn't even touch some of the highways - they're just as bad as they were when we went to school... oh well I guess the snow will melt eventually.  ::)

I canceled pep band tonight.  Between crappy driving conditions on the back roads and -6*F for the low before wind chill, I figured safety was a little more important than cheering on the basketball teams.  *gasp* I'm so anti-school spirit.  :o ::)

Wentzville called off already too.  I sure hope they get the roads in better condition for this weekend as I am going to St. Louis to watch Cirque du Soleil at SLU's "C-Arena"

Home-schooling: snow days are just another day, except we learn about building snowmen and fires in the fireplace.

Life is so good when you spend it with your own family.  :)

Junior

I'm getting ready to go into another work cycle...a four day work shift...and will likely be "stuck" at work due to the snow and ice that will come down my first day back at work today! I work at a hospital, so there are spare beds employees can use. However, being stuck in the hospital for maybe four days is like being stuck in a casino without having the fun! Pray for sunshine so I can commute home! :D

OK.  Sound off - how many snow days have each of you teachers had so far?
