Small Fire during Dickens Christmas Carol

Saw online at KY3 this morning that there was a small fire on stage during a performance of Dickens on Saturday. You know how the ghost of Christmas present uses a wand that shoots fireballs? Well, apparently the fireball hit a curtain on the set and it caught fire. Staff used fire extinguishers to put out the fire and the Opera House was evacuated.

Guess that's a good reason to pay attention to the safety announcement at the beginning of the show about during an emergency using the side doors to exit to the unsavory part of London.....

yes, I heard about that. a buddy of mine was actually there when it happened..  fire was out before they even had building evacuated..

sure glad no damage was done..

Brings new meaning to "burning down the house!"  :)

Glad no one was hurt, and the emergency was handled quickly.

I wonder if that means they will alter the play.

Knee jerk reaction tells me the audience and cast will now have to wear flame retardant outerwear.

At the least, they will change the wand to some kiddie version.

I understand from my source that Rachel (Christmas Present) and David (Scrooge) stayed in character as long as they could.  The wand often malfunctions, alternating between not working at all to making fireballs that are larger than necessary.  This time, it shot upstage and light the curtains in Scrooge's bedroom.  The curtains glowed for a moment before bursting into flame:

Scrooge:  You burned down my house!

They continued as stage hands extinguished the fire, but when they spun the set, the smoke became too distracting and the decided to close the show.

I understand the wand will probably just be a wand from now on, but I love a good ad lib!  I think the challis that drops is usually the worst malfunction in the show.

Bummer!  I like the wand!  Can't they spray fire retardant on the curtains?

I saw the first showing Sunday, and there was no "flaming" wand.  We did try to see the 7:15 show on Saturday night when we were turned away because of "technical difficulties."  Now I know why!

Did you hear the one about the fire at the saloon? Two saloon girls got way too hot...and it took two of the guys from Fire in the Hole to "quench" the fire. Ya know, those firemen have a lot of hose!  ;) Sorry folks, I couldn't resist! Now back to our "Rated G" conversation...

Wish there was a like button on here.

The Dugan Clan, at times, were a racy lot. We had a BAD reputation toward the end of the '81 season. 'Nuff said. We all grew up, had kids (and now grandkids) of our own, and have settled down...for the most part. Yeah, "me and my rowdy old friends have rowdied on down!" HA! :)
