We'll be up and running soon - after the season begins.
Sharpen your skills and focus your eyes.
The '09 season is coming to a forum near you!
:o :o :o :o :o :o :o
Just curious HB, are you going to get out there and take new pictures for the '09 version? I'm wondering because if you include pictures of any new stuff at the City, it could put those who haven't had the chance to make it out there this year yet at a disadvantage. Or is that just a little added incentive for them to make it out there sooner rather than later. Not that it really matters, it's just a game after all (although the best one I've ever seen on a forum). Just sayin'.
I am stretching out, and getting warmed up. Swoosh...I respect your extensive knowledge of the park, but I am coming for you this round! :P ;D
Nah, I'm opting out this round.
I have another project on the back burner that I want to work on instead.
Not sure when we'll be out, Zephon, but I usually post the photos at random. Are there a lot of "new things"? Are you hinting at some surprises?
Not really. Might be a few changes to some things, but nothing all that exciting. At least that I seen. At little bit of a face-lift here, slight remodel there maybe. I've been stuck in the Opera House all winter and except for the path up to the lunch room I haven't really seen much. You guys would probably notice more than I would anyway. Kinda like watchin the kids grow, when you're around them all the time, you don't notice they're gettin bigger.
Let the Game Begin!
Round One:(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii154/MrHoggatt/Silver%20Dollar%20City/Where%20in%20the%20City/2009%20Round%201/100_6669.jpg)
Hmmm... 2 choices, but I am going to say The Geyser in Geyser Gulch since my other choice most likely has more foliage around it than this one...
Low to the ground, looking up, in front of the Flooded Mine. (I say this, because the second I took a picture of it, yesterday, a spray shot up and caught me off guard!) :o
Flooded mine, hands down. Rode it 7 times today
That was the other choice! I was seeing more trees in the picture inside my head...
I thought I'd let a couple of you throw around some comments before awarding the first point of the season to...
...rubedugans. Yes, of course it is the geyser. It fooled the others because it looks like the clear water in FM, but I assure you it is water from Lake Silver that's spewing high into the spring atmosphere at Geyser Gulch!

I believe that is at the head of the spring that runs down along the side of Hill Street from the square. That looks like the Leather shop in the background.

Or the posts at random or do you have a specific time or date posting guide?
Posts come at you from all directions. They could be early; they could be late; they could be somewhere in between. You just never know. I can't tie it to any kind of schedule.
There is only one point available for each photo. We're just doing this for fun and the points don't matter anyway (just like on Whose Line).
I'm also not going to post more than one photo a day like I did at times last year.
Sit back, relax, and keep your arms and hands inside the vehicle at all times.
Continuing our water theme, here is Round 3 (and I don't even want to know what that smear on the "t" is!!):

Happy to oblige, SF, but you did all the work; it was a point well earned.
Still on the water theme, here's another (but I'll warn you, it's an easy one!).
If you look carefully, you'll see the first Where In the City? challenge from last year in the background.

Is that not a photo taken from the line/entrance to the Flooded mine with what I believe is me walking along the fence?
^OK - that's too freaky, and my wife wants to award bonus points for actually being IN the challenge if you can prove you are really in the picture (but that's not in the rules of the game). Are you thinking you are the tall gentleman in the blue jacket?

Oops. Try again.
It is on the big red toll bridge on Valley Road. I think the sign calls it a Covered Truss Bridge. You know the one with the wagon noises.
Back to the previous challenge, I am the gentleman to the left of the waterfall. Here is a link to a similar angle photo of me from a year or two back. Notice the resemblance? As I said in a previous thread, I always look for me in old photos of the park since I spent so much time there in the past 28 years I knew it was only a matter of time before I was in someones photo!

Oak Trail School
Where all classes are held in one room, and where most children only went to school until 2nd or 3rd grade, then began working to provide food and clothing for their family. Miss Bonnie Jean invites everyone to pick a desk, sit down and talk to her about school in the 1800s. Watch out for her tricky questions!

Elephant Parade.... On the SDC web site it does call it Elephant March.
Hmmm well they need to agree banner says parade
Thanks for the agreement OklaSDCfan! I WAS in fact going by the site so that I would be sure to get the name according to the company correct. Regardless I was correct in the location. According to some sources A parade (also called march or marchpast) is a procession of people or animals usually held for celebratory reasons. So either way it is worded I feel that it is correct, parade or march.
There are 4 or 5 banners having to do with the Exposition located close to the baby nursing building just west of Red Gold, the railroad track right behind them. A very large nativity set usually sits in front of them at Christmas time. Is it one of those?
The banner is located behind Wings of Wonder AND behind the entry of Elephant March...
But I was correct in the elephants though...Tinman pegged the location(s)
Ahh...I was wrong. It's in the extreme southeast corner of the Exposition, behind the ladybug and beetles-like rides for tots.
OK, everybody. Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner, but haven't had power. The storm with the 100mph winds whipped through on Friday, knocking down trees and damaging buildings. We just had tree damage at our house.
Anyway, near as I can tell, rubedugans was the first to correctly ID the Elephant Whatever-It's-Called. The picture is from the banner located at the ride itself.

no I am okay, just going through park withdrawl, it has been nearly a month since I set foot in the park, and I was trying to figure out what the sign said..the date in the center was 1809 or something like that.... I am only speculating these details...I am not quoting them so I do not see any need for penalties for missed dates on signs!

Great...I actually see this one before anyone else has posted and it's one I have no clue about. :-\
I am stumped!
I will start out with the Frisco Barn.
I'm not playing, but I will say that it is in Midtown
Part of the backside of The Flooded Mine, by the exit? I know I've seen it, but am stumped as well...
Hooray! Four wrong answers so far! It thrills me to the toenails to have stumped so many with a shot of something you've all seen. Twenty-six pictures in and I finally challenged you.
Hint: not to pick on Swoosh (who is "not playing"), but he is the wrongest of the four so far. Keep trying.
One last guess, before Rube gets back from today's visit: the backside of Heartland Home Furnishings?
Red Gold Heritage Hall
Nope and nope. Keep trying, but stay away from Cardiac Hill and Midtown.
I wanna say it's Main Street/the Square, but who knows... it's been over a year since I was last there...
^Another place that it ain't.
I'm wondering if that isn't by FITH. Did you do some photoshop swirling there in the upper left quadrant to obscure a clue?
Actually, is it inside FITH??
Opera House maybe?
A few hours at the park, and though it did cross my mind, I did not drag my wife around aimlessly looking for a window. She humors me enough with me stopping every 12.5 ft to take another picture, and the park just would not be as fun without her. I know from the image, that it is dark-er, HB most likely used a flash, there IS foliage, and some photo shopping to protect the identities of the innocent signs. I know the painted window frame colors on the window appear elsewhere in the park, but I CANNOT FIND THIS ONE. I must have been looking too hard.
I am going to guess the Lost River of the Ozarks.
QuoteA few hours at the park, and though it did cross my mind, I did not drag my wife around aimlessly looking for a window.
That cracks me up. SDC Fans should not have to wear badges or shirts to find each other. We're easy to find - we're the ones running into trees because we're looking at all the dumbest little details.
Come now, people! You can get this. It is a unique location - not something you could find elsewhere - but I'll admit you have to really have paid attention.
Try these hints on for size:
- Zephon is right! (Not the right guess, but yes there is some masking of a street name in the photo.)
- FiTH and the Opera House are about as far away as you could get.
- You must be out of sight of the main square.
- It is not connected to a craft, a ride, a concession, or a show.
Ok... I think I might have it. When you are entering the park. Right before you enter the Hospitality House there is a Small Front Porch. I think it is one of it's windows.
OK...I think you might not. Sorry about that.
I shouldn't make it this easy, but here is another hint:
Mortimer bathes here.
Mortimers Magic Box (The magic shop)?
Actually, the SDC website lists the magic shop as the Dazzle Magic Shop (though the picture still says Mortimers Magic Box).
But why would Mortimer bathe in the magic shop? There's no tub in there.
Perhaps Mortimer also hears explosions nearby as he gets his hair cut?
Grasping, here...the restrooms by Thunderation?
Mary's Springhouse? Mortimer Lucchi DID hit the spring while digging you know!
^^Good job, tinmann. The window sits between the men's and women's restrooms next to TNT exit.

No, it diverts away from the cave now. From what I understand this is due to the fact that the cave walls started crumbling and it needs to be fixed up again.
As for the crystals on the AP cave walls, I can confirm that it had some. I remember them pretty vividly. :)
Yes, AP is just a shadow of its former self. It takes about half the time it used to, and now we float through a concrete box - not very creative.

next to the big cannon on the main square
Coehorn mortar between the square and the Homestead/Church.
I'm at a loss on this one. While KBCraig has the answer I would find acceptable, I need to ask you guys if you consider the mortar to be next to the big cannon. I don't know exactly where the cannon is.
Heh, I'm not really playing, I was just pleased to be able to give an answer for a change.
On our June visit, one of my boys pointed out "that little cannon", and I took the time to explain that it wasn't a cannon, it was a mortar, and pointed to the real cannon. As an old Redleg, I never miss an opportunity to educate people about artillery pieces. ;)
Please don't consider this a plea for the point. I'm just being conversational.
I've got one just like it, I've been reenacting artillery for about 10 years now...those coehorns are a lot of fun.
That's all I needed to hear, but would still like to add KBC to the scoreboard at some point so don't count yourself out of the game. Just getting on the board is hard enough with some of these guys ready to pounce 24/7. :)

Wrong. Very wrong.
I may have to deduct a point for that one.

I'm waiting. Anyone?
ACME Ore Washing Machine ;D
Ohhh I was so close with mine! only a few words off. I just felt I would take the first point, and allow someone else to get a bonus point if it was up for the offering! Not gloating, just sharing the wealth.
Nope, no bonus points as this is not a trivia game. Besides there is also a patent notice at the bottom of the sign. (I guess I'm putting on my strict hat for the new school year.)
May 23, 1876?
I couldn't tell you. The date didn't make it into my picture.
If we were in fact waiting on a date for this (I doubt it! with all of our busy schedules lately I know this game isn't a priority) I do not know it (Yes I...knew where the sign was, however I have failed you all in the date department.) I wonder if I could find a way to fit more parentheses into this one post (more than likely I could(but I would just be stretching it if I did)).
Sorry I haven't been on very much of late...You are right about schedules being in the way, plus I am really low on photos. Like last year, someone else may want to post a good pic, and I'll get to play too (though I am horrible at my own game). Any takers?
Oh heck since I am in the lead, I will put my score on hold, and post a few pics while HB plans his next trip to take more panel stumping photos. Until then I'll post some of my oddities. "GAME ON!" I'll start with an easier one that ..well probably shows a bit too much, but we'll see!

Any additional info available?
I'll take a stab at it...is it also in Molly mills resturant upstairs?
You are correct in that it is a restaurant, but not the Mill...
Big Jack's Sandwich Shop?
Donna's Cafe? (Employee's cafe) I believe I saw this on the entry wall...
Reunion Hall?
Unfortunately I am not familiar with Donna's cafe as I have never worked for SDC. I might have wandered there and taken photos, but I would need to know exactly where this is located...is it within an existing restaurant -i.e. a back portion/a side room? Somebody Help me!
I think it is back to the right of the EMT station. Behind the Funnel Cake stand. :)
Alright this has been on too long without the correct answer, and much like HB I have been swamped by work-nearly 60 hours a week as a teacher does in fact wear you out-that is excluding the time as a teacher at home grading/planning etc. that is just counting contact time with students! Okay this photo is inside Mary's Springhouse...go look it is there! Now if I do find that in fact it does appear in Donna's cafe, which someday I hope I can find..I will let you know if it is there as well. No points awarded, on to a new fresh image!

Along the retaining wall at the entrance to the Wilson Farm area?
I'm wondering if that isn't a wall behind Fried Fancies, maybe visible from the walkway leading to Wildfire.
HB is on the board!!!

Nice to be on the board. Boy, I've missed a couple of chances - not able to check in as often since school began. Pretty sure okla has this one, although that rug looks to be newer than I remember.
Great eye! not many people look up! Yes indeed it is the ceiling of the "upside down room" of the Grandfather's Mansion. I also thought it looked newer which prompted the photo opportunity! I am guessing Aunt Polly's
Culinary & Craft?
Back side of the gazebo on Main Street?
5 days, and this one still is up, I just might have to give a little more info on the photo then. HB is geographically closest with his guess of Main Street Gazebo in that this sign is in the vicinity of the town square/main street. I'll let it go another day or two...and maybe I'll open up my selective cropping just a little bit as well...
Since I am new to the game - I am unsure if you can guess twice... But it wouldn't be the obvious Hannah's Ice Cream??
Guess as many times as you would like..and no I am sorry that isn't the place.
Rube, you have really stumped me. Your cropping isn't as selective as you may think, because from the beginning I've noticed what appear to be water droplets at the very top, which is a big clue. Unfortunately, your geographic help and what look to be water droplets are the only clues I have and I don't know what to do with them. ???
Sullivan's Mill?
I am going to give it another shot - Mary's Springhouse

Not TOO easy, I can think of 6 water wheels, and this doesn't look familiar, unless it's the one at the main gate (administrative offices).
That is exactly where that wheel is...
That's one of the employee tribute signs for years of service. It'd be interesting to get a photo collection going for those.
I figured the waterwheels (since there are at least 6 might make some think of others, and totally bypass the one EVERYONE passes when entering the park!) Can't fool Tinmann though!

Yes indeed! It is a big ol' sign up top on James River Dockside Theater, look for it sometime!

I know I've seen that, but can't quite remember where.
Is it at the Flooded Mine?
No, the flooded mine is incorrect. It's been a week...any other takers on this one?
Is this on the tin type building by the saloon?
Train Depot?
HINT- Where would the Sheriff take someone who was captured?
The INSIDE of the Silver Dollar City Jail! I didn't comment before, because I didn't recall seeing this on the outside...
INSIDE is correct. I'll go ahead and count it as a point.....

No, Every visitor to the park walks by this at least twice during their day, fairly early on their visit, and then once more when their visit is coming to a close. It is obviously very often overlooked! But that is the point of this game huh? I'll give it another day or so...
Just a wild guess based on your hints... Somewhere outside the park-side of the Hospitality House, maybe near the trellis...???
Just reaching for answers now. I want to get on the board at least once. LOL
Joy
DING DING DING!!! That is exactly where it is located! It is to the right (Towards Molly's Mill) as you are entering the park through the Hospitality House. If you look at the right edge of the photo you can see the corn stalks that are attached to the trellace from the Fall Festival. VERY MUCH overlooked if you ask me!

Is there a photo for #70? Am I missing something or have you really stepped up the game to include mind reading?
Haven't you figured out what that was...
1989 when the snowstorm hit during the night before Halloween? We had the park all to ourselves for the day- I think about 350 people made it in, it was amazing!
Maybe it is an ExtReMe ClOsEUp of the vanilla ice cream, or maybe ...
I got sidetracked, and the photo didn't attach...it is on its way shortly.
I was going to make a smart response like that, but thought it might just have been my DSL acting slow and not loading all the pictures.

Nope, sorry SDC. There are a few context clues in the photo that might help you...
The Flooded Mine?
Dockside Theater?
The leather shop?
And Dewey takes the prize! It is the demonstration area outside of the Leather Shop.
If you notice, there are a few very subtle clues as to the location. The pieces of punched leather lying on the mat, a small strip of leather with a few tooling marks on it at the very left of the photograph, and the mess of dye all over the mat. Nicely done!

I thought the same thing, but it's pretty hard to theme a modern soda dispenser. It would be nice if they had old-fashioned soda fountains.
Either saladdays and I are both wrong, or Rube has abandoned us. ;)

Next to the duplicating lathe.
It's the vent stack ON the duplacating lathe, just a side note, the boiler you see under this stack isn't fired at all, a modern, electric boiler is hidden in the shack behind it. The steam just creates the illusion that the large vertical boiler is in use, that boiler is big enough to run a medium-sized steam boat lol

Does anyone remember or have a picture of a water standard that was out in the parking lot that had a painting on it of the back of a park ranger with the back of Shad standing beside, with his arm over the ranger's shoulders?
Wow, rube, an off season game? Pretty ambitious.
Thanks, by the way, for keeping the game alive.
I think the "employees only" door is in the wood carving shop.
Sorry KB keep searching!
I'd swear the old door was going into a kitchen area between what used to be known as Jack and Mary's Sandwich Shop and what used to be called Welch's Vineyard. But, who knows, maybe they moved the door to another location!
I am unsure of any whereabouts that this door might have been, so we'll stick to the current location. TinMan messaged me with the correct answer, I guess he is trying to build a handicap before he jumps into the game!
Alright He didn't ask for it but I am going this one to Tinman so that I can post another goodie

Isn't that on the square? Is it on top of the hospitality house?
On top of something yes, Hospitality House...No
Well, I honestly can't remember where it is, although I know I see it all the time. :'(
How about on top of the Ozark Market Place?
The wife and six-year-old say the old general store.
Right now TInMan is furiously shaking a stick! apparently everyone is too preoccupied with the building that is below this to look up! Just thinking about the building makes my mouth water......
::) I'm too tired to be too furious, hehehe, I wore myself out in Branson, today. Ice carving at the Titanic, Greek food, and Guns & Hoses, their 1st annual benefit for the police & fire departments. Now I'm getting ready to go to dinner with family & then off to Cartoons! (Oh, yea, took 600+ pics, no surprise!)
So I've been thinking... and thinking... and thinking. I KNEW it was somewhere on or near Main Street, but on a smaller building; not on any of the "main" ones on the "Square". Rube's "mouth watering" comment finally put it into place in my head.
It's on the Funnel Cake stand over on the northeast side of Main Street, heading down Valley Road. Last time I got my funnel cake from there, I got it with hot fudge... MMMMMM.

Heavy sigh... ;) 24 more days for the rest of us!

grumble grumble....24 days, grumble. :-[
I will call this a point for Steam since it is somewhat on the wall of the copper shop, and somewhat on the wall of the woodcarvers.....POINT, I'll allow it Check back for a new one tomorrow!

Is that on the side of the candle shop.
I think it is on the side of the Tintipe shop.
Yes that is correct it is the remains of when the tintypes were taken in the outdoor setting. This little box still has a flash bulb inside BTW, and a nice wasp nest...not that I peeked or anything! ::)

On to another! Can you see I am getting excited about Opening day?
I am going to guess on this one and say the taffy shop.
I don't recognize the sign on the frying pan, but judging from the wall it hangs on, I'd guess the old taffy shop, too. (The log building next to where cut glass used to be...just down the street from the train depot.)
I've seen this, but I'm getting too old. I don't think I'm right, but just to enter a guess, I'll say Brown's Candy Factory.
mmmmm-nope
Keep -a- tryin! ;D
The apple butter shop?!
YES!!! Who knows if it will still exist in a few weeks once the new store is established, not all of us are as important as Tinman to be able to take photos inside during the off season (kind of like looking behind the curtain in Emerald City)

I am hoping that the new Apple shop will be a little more spacious.
We need to cut this over to a new thread for the 2010 season!! Just a couple weeks away now!
Almost there I know!!!!!! I am excited, and hope to be down there for the new 2010 Where in the City to start with all new photos!!!! This validates my need for a new external hard drive!

Is this in the Ozark Marketplace?
Just going to throw out a guess...
By/on the woodcarvers shop.
I figured with a few recent wood carvers ones, that no one would first think of the woodcarver-But Saloongal did!!!
Yes it is!!!
