I was flipping channels on TV last night and the NBC news had a piece about the King Kong attraction at Universal Orlando reopening to excited crowds. Did not catch but the very tail end of the story. What happened there? Did they remodel, or have damage to the attraction? Maybe BetaMike...who lives in the neighborhood...can tell us more. Just curious. My wife and daughter and I visited Florida in 1996, and really enjoyed Universal...Back to the Future ride, King Kong, Ghost Busters, and so on. (I'm biased, I know, but the Star Tours at Disney/MGM, Ghost Busters, and Back to the Future were all variations on...the diving bell...I enjoyed 'em all, though!)

No such luck on this coast.  What you probably saw is the return this year of the new King Kong experience at Universal in Los Angeles.  It was one of the soundstages that burned in the recent fire and gave the creative team a new lease on the concept.

The ride you remember in Orlando was indeed classic and was replaced in 2004 with the thrill ride "The Mummy"

History Buff

We loved the ride, from the queue to the actual sighting of King Kong in the distance to the attack on the suspended cable train.  He grabbed our vehicle and shook us pretty well before the ride was over.
