Hello all.  I am bringing the wife and kids (girls 10 & 8) down to SDC next week (from KC).  We are all very excited.  I am curious, with the ages of my girls, what parts of the park would they be to old for (HDH maybe)?

Any tips of the trade that you experts could offer would be greatly appreciated.  We went to Disneyland a couple years ago.  I think I spent 2 months planning the trip and our agenda in the park.  I am not doing that with SDC, I want to enjoy it more.  But, I am sure there are still some advice that we can heed that will help us pack in as much fun as we can.

Thanks!!!!

Hello husker92!  The best advice I could give you would be to avoid Saturday (larger crowds).  If your family is into rides I would try very hard to get to the park at the time it opens (opening ceremonies are very good).  When it first opens you can pretty much walk right on at any of the rides and this will last a couple of hours before lines start to fill up.  GRAB A PATHFINDER---This paper can be found in many places throughout the park, it has a map of the park plus a schedule of the day's entertainment.  Have Fun!

Oh and by the way husker92!  A lot of first time visitors don't realize that ice water is free throughout the park.  It can come in pretty handy for a family on a hot day.

both good points pintrader,

and along with the food/water topic.

You can take in food-sandwiches,crackers, candy bars or whatever in with you.

Along with your own drinks, as long as they are in plastic containers. (no glass please),

All great tips.
Half Dollar Hollar is designed for ages up to 7 (what their website says...not really sure what they allow, or do not allow honestly)
With KidsFest beginning June 11, you more than likely will miss out on a few of those events, but some of the items should be in place on your visit.
From the SDC Website:

Many motels/ hotels offer packages for SDC (if in fact you do not have tickets) or if you arrive at SDC after 3:00pm, the next day is free!

I would say you are definitely thinking on the right track to not spend so much time planning for SDC. That is one of the things I love about it. I never feel like I have to be in a rush to get anywhere and I can just sit back and enjoy. I'm a huge Disney World fan (never been to Disneyland, but I'm going in July), and I definitely know how that inclination to plan can be. SDC is a perfect size and theme to take a more relaxed approach to.

That said, I would say to keep in mind some similar strategies if you want to avoid waiting in too many lines. Hit some of the bigger/popular attractions early, then head to the smaller ones later on around mid day (or spend some time in the wonderful shops). Some of those Disney like crowd pattern things can still be useful, but really are not necessary given SDC's crowd levels.

Also, I don't know your family of girls likes food... but I could arguably say that food is my favorite part of SDC. Since you have 4 of you, I'd highly suggest splitting food when you can so you can try more things. It can be tempting to buy a cinnamon roll or bubble bread for each of you when you see the bakery right as you walk in, but trust me you'll fill up quickly and then see food later you want to buy but can't fit in your stomach.  :D

Another random note, you can take whatever path you want through the park, but if you go clockwise around the main circle, you'll have a more gradual uphill slope to climb heading back towards the town square. Minor thing, but can be a big deal when kids get tired late in the day.

I'm sure everyone here who has been going to SDC for alot longer than me have lots of random tips as well. If you have any questions or specific rides/areas you'd like to know about, just ask. Most of all, relax, enjoy the atmosphere, and have fun!

This is a Great tip so read closely. The very first thing u must do when u get on park is to head to Sullivan's mill for a loaf of their piping hot cinnamon bread and then to the apple butter shop for an apple turnover topped with SDC apple butter.

How-doFolks

Try to save time for the cave, the entire family should enjoy it. Do it after ya eat so you have rested up & have energy. The cave is a good place to cool off if it gets hot.
Live life like it's the last day!

These are all great tips.  Thanks everyone.  We are in the process of reading up on the different rides to figure out which ones we want to make sure we ride and which ones we will do if we have time.

My girls are really excited about the demonstrations as well.  My oldest read a book that mentioned SDC a lot, something about a wood carver.  That is all she has been talking about this week :-).

The cave tires little ones (and big ones!) out plenty and helps them get to sleep just a bit earlier! For that matter the whole city and the walking involved plumb tuckers me out by 8:00pm on most trips!

Copper

There are glassblowers, potters, wood carvers, furniture makers, weavers, candy makers a blacksmith and so many more.  I hope they enjoy the craftspeople; they love to have conversations especially with the little ones.

The craftspeople are great entertainment at no extra charge; however, I do recommend buying a pottery mug or something that can last a lifetime.

Oh and I love the cave!

I agree, the souvenirs at SDC can be kept for a lifetime.

You can find "oops" shelf, and mistake items in some of those craft-in-action locations that can be a few dollars cheaper due to a surface flaw. or slight imperfection.

cocodane3

The imperfections are what are special because there not just made by a robot machine. They are made by a real human and they still look cool/ better priced.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE GREAT INFORMATION.  We had a terrific time at SDC.  I will try to post details in the other thread.
