This is the first year we have ever made it to an opening ceremony at SDC.  We are NOT morning people so we usually arrived at the park after it was already opened.  But this year we resolved to get there early and we are glad we did.  The theme song, recognizing of the Veterans, Flag raising, Pledge, and National anthem are a great way to start the day.  Now, does anybody know why they do not do the opening ceremony during Old-Time Christmas?

I agree with you Parson B Ready!  The opening ceremony is probably one of my favorite things to see and do at SDC.  If I can't make it to the opening ceremony my day just never seems complete at SDC.  In my opinion the ceremony was even better in past years but is still a don't miss.

Parson, i would have to guess because of the "late" opening of the park.. the day is already 1/2 over by noon for most of us.

I agree with what your thinking though. You cant honor our heroes/veterans too many times!

Attending the opening ceremony is an absolute requirement for my Silver Dollar City trips. There is always lots of energy, anticipation, and excitement flowing through the air.

Plus, after celebrating the terrific ceremony, as soon as the ropes drop, I get to dash straight to my favorite roller coaster, and enjoy the only "wait free" ride of the day!

^^ I agree as well, since the park does not open until later in the day, I do not know if there is still a "drop the chain" moment, like in other seasons. Maybe it is like the church services on Sunday...they have one before the park is actually open to guests just for the workers, could it be possible that a small observance is made for the flag ceremony despite the presence of guests at the park?

Parson B Ready

I've been there many times for the chain drop during OTC and have never seen any kind of ceremony.  Course I was never looking for one,  I'll pay more attention in December to see if the flag is already flying before the chain drop.

I think they should have the ceremony during OTC..  At least on sat and sunday! Just my thoughts

Specifically where is the flagpole? Is it up during the OTC because of the tree?

Ozark Outlaw

The only flagpole that I am familiar with for opening ceremonies is the permanent one in the main square. It's still there during Old Time Christmas.

sanddunerider

it is on the main square, almost straight north of the old steam engine.  OR in front of (south) of the grill restaraunt that sell the turkey legs,,

I wasn't sure exactly where the flagpole was even though I have been there during the ceremony.   I have no problem with no opening at the OTC.  They do a great job all year so there must be a reason.

Parson B Ready

I asked a staff member this past weekend, why they didn't do an opening ceremony during OTC.  He gave me a couple reasons (sorry to say I don't remember them all).  But one of the main reasons was staffing. They cut back their staffing for OTC.  It is the Street Troupe that does the opening ceremony and there is no Street Troupe during OTC.  Most of the Street Troupe members are in other shows on park.
