Branson Talk / Re: Where the locals go to eat

I can't speak for the locals, but I've always enjoyed the German food and lake views at Altenhof Inn, 680 Jakes Creek Trail, www.altenhofinn.com. Also, McFarlain's is a good home-cooking place at 3562 Shepherd of the Hills Expy, http://goo.gl/YCwNC.

Random Talk / Re: The Ozarks Mountaineer
February 13, 2013, 11:20:59 AM
So sorry to hear that, Junior. I remember reading them at the Christian County Library in Ozark as a kid. I learned almost everything I knew about my Ozark heritage from four sources: my parents and the old folks we knew, Lebanon High School's excellent "Bittersweet" magazine from the 1970s, Jimmy Driftwood's "Music of the Ozarks" album that he made for the National Geographic Society, and the Mountaineer.
The Mountaineer was my very last print magazine subscription. As a former newspaperman I know the numbers for print publishing don't work anymore, and no one has figured out how to squeeze enough money from online advertising and distribution to replace the old revenue streams.
I hope someone can at least scan those 60 years of Mountaineers and make it available online. For anyone who loves Ozark history and lore, that would be a trove equal to Silas Turnbo's manuscripts (http://thelibrary.org/lochist/turnbo/index.html).

If anyone is visiting the park Friday 12/28, I have an extra BAF to give away. I'll be there at noon.

Hi! You might try this thread; lots of BAF offers back and forth: http://sdcfans.com/forums/index.php?topic=1460.135
I love that you offer up your BAF tickets. I'm going to try that on my next visit.

Fifteen minutes from midtown Memphis to downtown Memphis. Half the route is a lovely 1920s residential boulevard and the other half is a mess, but it's an easy drive.

Random Talk / Re: Movies made in the Ozarks

According to an article I read years ago in the Mountain Home newspaper, the "Bloody Mama" cast and crew were filming a scene inside the old Cowdrey mansion in Yellville when the elderly homeowner heard them cussing. She threw them out of her house, and if I remember correctly she aimed her shotgun at them for emphasis.
I think they learned something about Ozark customs and Ozark women that day.
The house is now the Red Raven Inn, and it's lovely.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: SDC ringtones
July 24, 2012, 11:13:48 AM
Have any of us SDCFans ever recorded an mp3 of the steam locomotive whistle at the park? I'd love to use it on my phone as a notification ringtone.
The 50th anniversary ringtones include lots of great goodies, but they don't include the steam train. (http://50.silverdollarcity.com/contests-extras/music.aspx)
If no one has recorded it, I'll try to do so on my visit this fall.

Last fall I posted about trying the Sticker Shield. It's a clear plastic backing that is *supposed* to adhere to the inside of the windshield like a Post-It note. You'd put the sticker on the shield, then put the shield on your window.
Well, I finally used it with my new parking sticker when I visited last weekend, and I don't recommend the Shield. I thought it would peel on and off the inside of the windshield easily, but it was stuck hard to the glass after only a few hours. I'll have to scrape the Shield off and then it won't re-adhere.
Sanddunerider's suggestion for laminating the sticker and hanging it from your rearview mirror is a great idea.
The Shield also caused a little issue with the parking lot attendant. He was confused when I declined to let him put the sticker directly onto the windshield, then annoyed, then downright rude. I literally had to block him (twice!) from reaching in and slapping the sticker directly onto the glass, even after explaining the Shield to him. SDC really needs to go with a 'hanger' pass instead of a sticker, if only to keep the peace.

Rube, I hadn't noticed that the copyright dates were different for some photos. Nor had I noticed that the visitors were walking up towards the tower. You have a sharp eye!

SDC Memories/ Park History / Marvel Cave photos from 1952
February 18, 2012, 08:13:42 PM
My mother just showed me some photos that she bought on her first visit to Marvel Cave on Aug. 5, 1952. I posted them here: http://goo.gl/3uOli
She had just graduated high school at the time (Humansville High School, Humansville, MO - go Tigers!). She visited Marvel Cave and the Shepherd of the Hills area with a group from a church camp at Hollister. She said there was no tram yet, no Hospitality House, and of course no Silver Dollar City.
The copyright mark on the photos appears to say 1951, so these photos were very recent when she bought them.

If you're not down with the Scotch tape idea, you might try the Sticker Shield. It's a clear plastic backing that adheres to the windshield like a Post-It note. Put the sticker on the shield, then put the shield on your window. It's $5.49 (plus $2-3 shipping) for two of them: https://ssl.dwebsite.com/secure6/stickershield/order.html
I have mine on order, so I can't vouch for it personally yet. Will let you all know.
