Title: Are you ready for some football?
Post by: Zephon on September 01, 2012, 10:12:21 AM
Doesn't look like KC will have an exciting season.  St. Louis might fare better.  Mizzou in the SEC...how do you think they'll do?  I predict 6-6.

Arkansas begins play today. We went to the local HS football game last night, Pea Ridge over Elkins 49-7! Go Blackhawks!

I said after Friday night's Cardinals game, that I was giving up on baseball for the year and switching to SEC football. Woo Pig!

Then the Cards had to go and tease me with a win on Saturday, so I'm still paying attention.

With Mizzou and the Aggies, the SEC is going to be very interesting this year.

Razorbacks over Jackson State, 49-24. SEC game or did a junior college get in there and play the hogs?  ;)

Arkansas got in their own way a bunch and the D played about as vanilla as I've seen it in years. Allowed Jack St. have the slant all night and darn looked like it was on purpose.

It was 20 years ago on game day that the coach of Jack St. was coach at Arkansas and lost to the Citadel ( my Freshman year)and got booted the next morning. Attendance 20 years ago, mid 30s, yesterday around 71

If you think that they'll only go 6-6, you sure don't follow Mizzou football or the SEC.
The EAST is Mizzou's to lose.

Oh, I don't know, Swoosh.  Looking at MU's schedule, I see 3 pretty likely losses, a probable loss, and a couple of possible losses, along with 6 or so probable wins.  Anything can happen though; that's why they play the games.  They might get lucky and go 9-3, but I think the adjustment to a new conference will have at least some detrimental effect.  I think they will be competitive though, win or lose.  And I do think that the move to the SEC will help with recruitment of better HS prospects but that effect on the team's W-L record is still a couple of seasons off.

Best guess on a season record is 8-4, but I can easily see a case for 7-5 or 9-3, too. Watch for Georgia; Sept. 29 ; and Nov. 10 at Tennessee...

Even with the good recruitment class Missouri had they still could not get into the top 30 recruiting class according to Rivals.  Joining the SEC should change all that and Missouri will start getting those players that Oklahoma, Nebraska and the others have been taking away.  I think the East is Georgia's to win or lose which is why today's game is so big for MU.  Not to mention the first SEC game for them!

AND that Josh is the main reason i dont watch college sports..more emphasis on money, less on education, AND the bad thing is it starts years before college does....

WOW!  Arkansas...even with their QB out for the 2nd half, the loss is surprising.  I was pulling for MU and impressed that they were still in the game after 3+ quarters, but ultimately, Georgia wore them down.

Today, KC's QB, Cassel, just does not impress.  At best, he's adequate.  The Rams had a W in their grasp but let it get away.

I am a lifelong Razorbacks fan.

I say with no hesitation at all, that they deserved to lose that game and drop out of the top 25.

It was pathetic.

But hey, the Cards are still in the Wild Card, 1.5 games ahead of the Dodgers!

Well, lookie here now!  The baseball season is extended for all of us here in Cardinal Nation!  The Cardinals have made the post-season with an interesting, to say the least, win over Atlanta.  Can they do it again?  12 in 12!!!  GO CARDS!!!

The NFL season has gotten off to an interesting start...New Orleans and Green Bay not near the top of their divisions, and New England just barely hanging on...whoda thunk it?  Kansas City is in a familiar place, but St. Louis is off to a surprising start, not great perhaps but 3 wins this early is good for them.

Mizzou...God Bless em...is right on track for what I predicted (6-6), currently at 3-3.  I root for them hard, but at the beginning of the season, I was also being realistic.  To be fair, injuries have hurt them, but that's something all teams have to deal with.  If the East is theirs to lose, it appears that they're well on their way.

I can tell you so many things on why this season went the way it did but the single biggest reason is that when you have a drill sargent for a head coach and he's replaced with Gomer Pyle things fall apart. The last thing that team needed was a pal.

It's nice to Mizzou getting a taste of life outside the joke that is the Big 12

Ugh, definitely should have made it down to the Red River Shootout this year. Four years at OU and I still haven't gone to one yet due to lack of either funds or time every year. Next year I'll be all over it though.

This game isn't even that entertaining anymore though. Texas is only scoring when we make a screwup.

How many more Mizzou going to win this year? Our defense is as devasted as your oline but we are improving as coachless as we are. Mizzou, not so much. I so look forward to playing Mizzou in basketball again. Here's a treat.

Well, my early prediction was that Mizzou would go 6-6.  But I thought they would beat Vandy.  I figure they've got a chance to beat Kentucky, with Tennessee and Syracuse being toss-ups.  Florida is certainly a loss, and Texas A&M, probably.  With MU now standing a 3-4, they'll end up somewhere around...6-6.  Hopefully Franklin is able to resume the QB duties.

Swoosh's early prediction that "The EAST is Mizzou's to lose" has long gone by the wayside.  I know he's a big Mizzou fan, but I still don't know if he was being serious with that prediction or joking.  I guess you could say the prediction has come true, depending on how you look at it.

How bout them Cardinals?!!!  They're taking a beating right now in game two of the NLCS, but after that spectacular comeback win in Washington the other night, you can't ever count them out.  12 in 12!!!

I had no idea how hard the injury bug would hit us this year.  That plus a very nasty case of "pussy-itis" hitting some of our key players has really stung hard.  I still think the Tigers will go bowling this year, but the way the team has played this year has been pathetic.

Going in, I figured getting used to the hard-hitting physical nature of SEC football would be the biggest adjustment MU would face.  The injuries and missed tackling are all related to that.  Even with that, it's amazing the difference that Franklin makes in their offense.  Hope he's able to finish out the season.

Weedeater Bowl, it's where the underachievers in the SEC go, or someone in the old Big 12 went when they flirted with being good. Mizzou got owned by Arkansas there once. They returned the favor when they played a coachless Arkansas team a few years later.

You got the add something to the trip like a duck hunting outing.

There's this for Dewey, Sexton is trying to fleece T. Boone for a few more coins. Seen this act before when he repped Nutt:

There's been considerable buzz about Oklahoma State Coach Mike Gundy, and the Razorbacks are indeed highly interested in him.

Sources close to Gundy are split on whether he could become serious about leaving.

We'll find out for sure in December if anything comes of it.

For now, on the UA's end, there's concern by some that Gundy could just use the Razorbacks' interest to receive a raise from Oklahoma State. And that's understandable given agent Jimmy Sexton's reputation for getting clients more money in down years.

However, according to a source in Stillwater, where there's also some buzz about Arkansas, it doesn't seem likely that the Cowboys would go for that this year. And it's highly doubtful that Gundy – or even Sexton – would think they would.

The Cowboys are 3-2 right now, and the toughest part of the schedule is ahead with games against six teams ranked in the BCS Top 25.

Gundy played hardball with Oklahoma State during last year's one-loss season when he hired Sexton to represent him. In the past, Gundy handled his own negotiations. Sexton landed him an eight-year deal that will pay him close to $4 million a year – but only if he stays for the full eight years.

Gundy has golden handcuffs to the tune of about $5 million, meaning that money will be in a retirement account, and he becomes vested at the end of his contract.

According to a report in March from The Associated Press, he's making $3.275 million this season after making $2.1 million in 2011 under his old contract. His salary drops to $2.85 million next season, then starts going back up. The final year of his deal, according to the AP, will earn him $3.55 million.

Gundy is in elite company when it comes to his current contract. Business Insider reported in November 2011 that only Mack Brown, Nick Sabana, Bob Stoops and Urban Meyer were making in excess of $4 million annually. Arkansas' former coach, Bobby Petrino, ranked in the top 10 nationally among college coaches at close to $3.64 million.

***
Speaking of contracts, don't forget about Oklahoma State's assistant coaches, some of whom Gundy would like to bring with him if he did happen to take another job somewhere.

While we haven't had time to verify all of the details, we were told last night by a source that Oklahoma State – unlike some schools – signs its assistant coaches to contracts that are fairly complex two- and three-year deals.

About half the time in situations like this, assistant coaches' contracts are tied into the head coach's contract. That means if the coach leaves the school, the assistants' contracts become void. At this time, we don't know if that's the case at Oklahoma State, but it's certainly something we plan on checking into.

I never have understood Hog fans and their sense of "entitlement".
They are a mediocre team at best and have been that way for as long as I can remember.
They will never be a top tier SEC team because they are in the WEST and because of where the school is located.  Seriously, who in their right mind would choose Fayetteville over most of the other cities in the conference.  Ok, one could argue against Starkville or Auburn.

Gundy is not going to leave Oklahoma State.  DONE DEAL™
I hear Dooley will be soon looking for a job.  Maybe you two school should just trade.  They get Petrino and you get Dooley.

Course you could always go after that clown at Auburn.  He's gone after this year too.

Right on Swoosh!

Let's see....he's built a relationship with his team and the players all respect him.  He shows the players that he is part of the team and can celebrate WITH them during victory just as much as feeling the sting of a loss.  He took a program that was so-so and has made a statement.  Mr. Pickens has invested into the program and now our facilities are one of the best in the entire nation.  I see your point....he's not done much for Oklahoma State.  Jeez......

And before you bring up the "I'm a man, I'm 40" rant....take note that this action elevated his status with the players to the point of almost God-like.  They know that he is there for them and confirmed his relationship with the players by proving he will defend his players when they are attacked by the media.

Yeah...he's a real "doofus".....but keep in mind...the pigs would LOVE to have that doofus leading their "team".

I really don't care, Gundy reminds me too much of Houston Nutt and all the rah, rah.

Oh we'll get a coach and if being a historically top 25 level team is mediocre I hate to fathom what Okie St. and Mizzou are considered. Arkansas ranks in the top 25 in attendance (only one in basketball, football and baseball), revenue and profitability and overall success of it's sports program and is a testiment to it's drive considering that we are such a small state population wise. We are also one of just a handful of schools that where the athletic department is in the black, doesn't take one dime of student fees or taxpayer money for funding and actually gives to the general academic fund. All the while... maintaining top notch facilities at one of the lowest debt loads in the SEC. And.... it's been proven we can hire away a coach from Mizzou from time to time.

Twice as many FBS schools as Missouri. Per capita, that's over four times as many.

Oklahoma does slightly better per capita with three FBS schools, but if you include FCS, Arkansas wins again, big time.

My point exactly.  It's nice to have a choice.

FCS?  Really?  Well, yeah I guess the real schools need teams like that to scrimmage.  Much like Arkansas State.

Look, all I'm saying is the Big 12 is far from being a "joke".  Haters gotta hate, but don't think for a moment you can beat yourself on the chest and say sec like we should bow down.  If there is ever a time for someone to bow down, it should be the sec taking the bow to ESPN.  One or two good teams does not make a conference.  From top to bottom, it's weak and the rest of the nation knows this.  But hey, if you enjoy being the sec's doormat, then more power to ya!

I'm not going to argue with Okie Dokie St folk on SEC vs Longhorn Conference.

Oklahoma St has jack blank on the U of A.

Get back to taking walking orders from the Horns and Sooners.

LOL Swoosh!  And with all that revenue...they still suck!  What else is there to do in Arkansas besides root for the pigs anyway????  Speaking of which....proud of our Cardinals!!!!  Now let's end this thing and start the series.

If you went by the way they act (their fans) you'd swear they'd have eon the last 20 NCs.  A "Giant" in their own mind, I guess.  They remind me of Nubs, just without the history or success... just the entitlement part.

Several, but that is not really what it is all about is it. It's about conference championships and we've blown our chances there several times but we get there from time to time and more likely to do so than second fiddle state and mizwho.

This is why I don't understand sports trash talk: the trash is more important than the talk. Half the responses don't even make sense, and the other half point to a logical conclusion that is the opposite of what the fan intends. And they don't care, because the trash is more important than the talk. No logic required, nor desired.

It's been many years, since 1979 or 80 since I've seen the "friendly Gnomes" that used to inhabit the cave at the old Jim Owens' Float Trip Ride, but if memory serves, they looked ALOT like the gnomes in the previous post! (Ha!)

there's a guy at work that absolutely hates Gnomes. It's a running joke to place them in places that he'll eventually go to.  The boss recently gave him a copy of Gnomeo and Juliet for as a 20th year gag. I'd kill to find one of those.

I haven't been watching/caring about this thread much, but there's entirely way too much bickering going on here. Keep it at least somewhat mature and light-hearted or go somewhere else to discuss football.

Getting back to the thread,
^I'm feeling pretty confident in OU again, especially while playing in Norman. I think the K-State loss really forced them to push themselves to do better for the rest of the season. Landry can still make some pretty stupid screw ups here and there, but ND is fairly mediocre this year I think.

Yeah Notre Dames offense is defiantly overrated but there defense is good except the secondary so I'm expecting a lot of passes from Landry

Wait a minute...the kid is well within his rights.  Check it out:
Official Rules of Baseball
Rule 3.19  Members of any team, players, coaches, managers, or management are expressly forbidden to cry.  There is no crying in baseball.  Rule 3.19 Comment:  An umpire may, at his own discretion, make an exception for tears welling up in a players eyes if a ball or bat has contacted the player in a sensitive part of his body, such as the groin, providing no audible sobbing has escaped the players lips.

Rule 3.19a  Because of the cruel nature of the game at times, a team will incur no penalty for having substitute cryers, providing they be confined to the stadium stands or rooms where they watch the game on television.  Rule 3.19a Comment:   The Chicago Cubs make liberal use of this rule.

I grew up a disciple of Staubach and Dorsett but I've never hated the Chiefs. Never been a fan but often found myself pulling for them. Thought they had a good, loyal fan base. I feel for those fans. My cowboys are lost in the cloulds and my college team is leaderless wandering through the SEC. Oof.

I was hoping Mizzou would get by Syracuse and prove my pre-season prediction of a 6-6 record correct...but it seems that I was a bit optimistic.  This week's game against Texas A&M, in College Station, will almost certainly be a loss, to finish at 5-7.  No bowl for the Tigers this year.

Chiefs?  Move along folks, nothing to see here.

Rams still have a chance at a semi-respectable season, I guess.

Baseball note:  Have you see the new jerseys the Cardinals will be wearing for their Saturday home games next season?  Really cool looking...they harken back to the jerseys of the 30's.

So how do you OkieDokie St fans feel about Gundy lifting his skirt up to some SEC teams. He done went and cheated and now has to live with it. ;D His agent done put him in a tough situation after Arkansas slowplayed him and Tenn couldn't afford him. His agent is notorious for floating his clients names out to extort better terms before contracts are up. I know the downfall of Nutt at Arkansas started when Sexton and he pulled that with Nebraska. Nutt stayed but lost halfthe fans right then and there. I can tell a neat story about Mike Anderson having to call Sexton last him to tell to stop the nonsense, he wanted the job not more money from Mizzou cause he was about to screw it up too. It was so funny watching Mizzou folks claim Mike wasn't ever going to leave to come back to Arkansas when many of us knew he had expressed his wanting to for over a year prior. Heck, I know someone he told personally over dinner one night.

Why did Mizzou run Yost. I'm going to miss ragging on his goofy looking self.

I'm still trying figure out our new coach and the fit but I get it on the surface.
Title: Re: Are you ready for some football?

I think Brett Bielema is a very interesting choice for Arkansas. Totally out of left field, never on anyone's radar -- but then, those who were on the radar were mainly negotiating to stay where they are.

Just because he played the power running game in the Big 10 doesn't mean that's the only game he knows. He has very balanced numbers between passing and rushing. The much-needed improvement he'll bring to Arkansas will be bulking up the lines, both O and D.

Recruiting? Sure, he'll have to adjust, because it's dog-eat-dog, take-no-prisoners in the SEC. But on the other hand, Wisconsin was the only school in the country with better recruiting efficiency that Arkansas -- producing good results with less-than-stellar recruits. He's great at developing players to their potential, instead of getting star results with star talent.

I'm looking forward to it.
