Title: Fourth of July
Post by: MissinTheGreenTrams on June 18, 2012, 05:42:39 PM
Will anyone go to the fireworks show this year at SDC? Will it be a show to rival other fireworks shows or just a mediocre attempt to keep patrons in the park? Will it be so crowded ya cant get to echo hollow for some prime seating? Or will the shooting be in echo hollow with all that nice dry wood?

I'd expect a pretty decent fireworks show, but nothing like Disney or anything spectacular like that. And expect there to be heavy heavy crowds for sure.

I'll be in town that week, but there are so many things going on and choices, that I'm not sure what we'll do yet.  We always went to the Landing, but switched it up last year and went to Big Cedar.  THAT WAS FUN!!  The Landing is great, but the parking is h*ll and nearly impossible.  If SDC is putting on a good show, I'll try that one this year.  Zephon, don't you work for the City?  Can you give us an idea what to expect?

I want to go, but if its just a mediocre attempt then I will stay home. I love the city dont get me wrong, I just......I dont know. I dont want to go fight a repeat Easter Egg hunt kind of crowd and get cruddy under the tree seats ya know....

It's my understanding that there will be a 15 minute fireworks display.  The Echo show will start at 7:30 that night (normal start is at 7:00), and the fireworks will coincide with the end of the show in some way, so that would put it at around 9pm, give or take.  Fifteen minutes is not long compared to some of the other fireworks events happening around town, but still, it's quite a substantial financial outlay for SDC.  I don't know how much money they've put into it but I heard they spent 3+ grand on the display at the end of the 50th anniversary celebration in Echo a couple years ago and that one lasted just about a minute.  I'm hoping that guests will support the event and show up for it.

Thanks, Zephon! I think we will check out the parking, and if we can get in w/o too much trouble we will go.  I read somewhere that they are offering $30.00 tickets to enter after five.  I think that's great for families that can't afford full price tickets.  All the boats at the Landing and the Spirit of America are sold out for the 4th.

My last experience at the Landing on the 4th wasn't a great one:  three 40-50 somethings sitting in front of us were buying drinks at Waxy's and dumping them in to-go cups.  They were so drunk they could barely stand (one ended up in my lap until my hubs shoved her off at which point she became angry.)  It was so crowded we were pinned in.  I mostly felt sorry for the young family next to us who's little kids had to listen to their mouths and watch them dance knocking into everyone.

Yeah I saw that. We're not going to get down there until late Wednesday evening so I doubt we'll get to watch any. Was hoping someone would be doing them the following weekend.

@Larson, how late Wednesday?  The Chateau doesn't seem to start until it's really dark.  You might have time to drive over towards the dam and catch them.  Or, last year on our way home after the fourth, we saw them all along Interstate 44.  It was pretty cool.

Probably 8-830. Don't think we'll have time to get over to the City, park, get in, find a spot, etc. We're staying @ Compton Ridge so I was hoping that we could see Chateau's from there, or at least some of it. We used to be able to see most of the fireworks from CC when they were still open, and I'm pretty sure Chateau is a bit higher up.

I was on SDC website and found that they will be having several side activities on the fourth. Also many discounts on food. 25 percent off skillet dinners (its only two dollars off but I will take it!!) at Buckshot Annies Hatfields tater Patch and the Lumbercamp and at Aunt Pollys it is buy one get one free ice cream cone. The soft frozen Taste Sensation (I am thinking the ICEE) will be 2.50. Which I think it should be 2.50 year round but that is my opinion, anyhow.......there were other deals also. I dont know yet if we will go. I am still trying to decide...

That sounds like a good deal to me. $6 is what the skillet should be all the time.  It tells me that they can actually sell this at 6 and make a profit.  Personally I think getting a skillet and a drink for $10 is not a unreasonable expectation.  The prices at SDC have reached Movie theater levels. They really need to drive them down a little.

That's a good way to put it!  You are very right!

I would not mind paying 8$$ for the yummy yum yum bowls if they were good quality produce from local grown farmers and not discount veggies from who knows where.

My daughter and son in law operated a fireworks tent for their preacher, who has a total of 8 tents scattered in the state. A burn ban was put in place in the county their tent was in...grand total of fireworks sold in 7 days: $45.00 Whoops!

It's a risk and I'm glad folks followed the burn bans. They needed 10 pumpers down here by Stonebeidge in Fayetteville cause someone was towing a truck with a logging chain and started fires all up and down a county road.

we started a field on fire! We did have hoses available and got it out before the Fire Dept got there. It was definitely the most memorable 4Th ever!

We were there, but we left before the fireworks began because Echo Hollow was full and people were being routed to the Grand Expo.  People were sitting on the ground and wandering around.  It looked like a big cluster to us, so we left and watched the Chateau display instead.

On our way to our preferred parking spot (we tried to plan ahead for the massive exodus after the fireworks), we walked by several people who were planning to watch from the planters in the parking lot.  People were waiting for the fireworks in several parking areas, as well.

We left about 830 also due to the disaster around Echo Hollow. Had a pretty good view of the fireworks while in the pool at Compton Ridge. It was a good display. I really don't think we could have seen much more had we stayed in the park and it was much more relaxing to watch while in the water.  ;D After SDC's were over we turned around and saw some of Chateau's also.

That is exactally why I didnt want to go. The crowds that would converge. I dont mind crowds as long as they are not all stuffed into one spot. And hot. And tired from and long day at the city. And cranky.

here's an idea... let everybody sit in the cars or parking lots and set off the fireworks in the parking lot where they park the busses and campers... you could easily see it from reserved parking, and the 2 lots right there..

As good as we could see them from 2 hollers over I bet you could have seen them just fine from any of the upper lots, and probably the lower 2 as well.

I don't think you have any in Kansas, so I'm not surprised you don't know the answer.  ;D

But just for you, Dan:
