Random Talk / Re: The SDCFans Lounge

Some great college football this weekend. Yesterday was the only time all year I got to watch a Razorback game on TV, and wow, was it a good one!

^The unfortunate thing is, by being the best team in Missouri that means we're the second worst in the entire NFL!

They can't even claim to be the best team in Missouri, these days!

Albert Pujols is NL MVP and I'm ecstatic! ;D ;D

Well, at least one thing made sense this year!

Definitely headed for Cooperstown. I have to remind myself that he's still just a youngster at 28, with at least 5-10 great years left.

Any SDC historians know how many fires there have been there through the years? It's a wooden town using lots of open flames, so it's always a risk.

And of course, we really have to know: has there ever been a fire in FitH?  ;)

Announcements / Re: Spam
« on: November 14, 2008, 02:01:51 AM »
I've seen other forum administrators say the same thing in the last few days: they're getting hammered with spam sign-ups. Apparently a major spammer was taken down, and they're seeking other outlets.

I know that one domain I own and administrate, which is nothing but a low-volume private forum, just got a 509/bandwidth shutdown, when I've never been anywhere near the limits. Suddenly it jumped to more than double the 3000 MB limit.

I don't know what's going on, because for more than 48 hours now I haven't been able to get any response from the hosting company, and they won't even let me log into the cpanel to see where the bandwidth was used. They didn't block ftp, so I was able to copy all the contents in case I have to jump ship early. I'll definitely be doing that when the contract is up in February.

FYI, hostingbegin.com is cheap, but has zero customer service.

Wow, talk about déjà vu all over again...

You know how sometimes you doze off and wake up with no sense of time having elapsed? I had the Chiefs/Chargers game on today while I laid down to sleep (I work nights). I woke up, and the Chiefs had just scored and were going for two. I dozed off again (for a few seconds, I thought), and they scored a touchdown and were going for two.

This confused me, but I was trying to sleep, and I didn't want to wake myself up by trying to figure out how KC was going for the endzone four times in a row.

So I just read the highlights and figured out the 2nd and 4th quarters ended the same way.  ;D

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Season Passes On Sale Today
« on: November 05, 2008, 12:51:56 PM »
Wow.

So... if I purchase one adult season pass, I can purchase a second adult ticket for $5 off for my wife, and use the free guest passes (during the applicable dates) for our four kids (ages 5-19)? (Not counting the oldest, who is off in the Army.)

I suppose it's too much to ask that the "after three, next day free" deal applies to the guest passes.  ;D

Might be worth it to buy two season passes, to have two full days at the City for everyone.

This would be a significant savings for a big family like ours. It wouldn't mean we would visit more than once, it would just mean that we would visit once instead of zero.

What's the chance of SDC ever extending their hours to get some of that evening action? Wasn't that ostensibly the reason for CC in the first place?

Well, after 40 straight hours of driving, pulling a travel trailer, with two more hours to go...

I don't know anything about this proposition, but it's probably a bad deal. Not for the reasons that many people will oppose it, though -- I think gambling (and all vices) should be completely legal. The problem is that the bills that pass create highly regulated gambling, where the casinos bribelobby the legislature and gaming commission to restrict their competition.

It's a very unhealthy collusion between government and private interests.

I have wanted SDC’s registers to look like that computer on the Wikipedia Steampunk page for a long time. I hate the way those huge boxy computers look in all the shops.

Check out this steampunk Mac Mini that was created as a wedding gift:

The monitor is amazing!

Now to revise a previous idea:
Quote
Hillbilly Hollow.  It's a place full of nothing but front porches, hound dogs, and XXX jugs.  The centerpiece a moonshine still that looks like Cinderella's castle.  What do you do in Hillbilly Hollow?  Sit on the front porch with your hat over your eyes.  (I'm hoping this is a no smoking area.)

How about making this a WiFi area where folks could sip coffee and bring their laptops to enjoy the internet in a nature setting.  I could see myself doing some research or using the setting as the inspiration to the Great American Novel.

Would anyone else LOG on (Get it?  Can't you see the logo?) at the park?

I can't see myself lugging a laptop into the park, but I can certainly see parking an elderly relative in there with one. Or taking advantage of WiFi for iPhone connectivity (if I ever get one!)

I'm 100% nostalgia fan. If SDC was unchanged from 1975, I'd still want go and take my kids (and if they didn't want to go, I'd go by myself.)

The modern rides and exhibits are nice, but I still want to go for the blacksmith shop, swinging bridge, glassblowing, Marvel Cave, and the train ride. And the admittedly low-tech Fire In the Hoel.  8)

Hmmm, the poll option isn't enabled, at least at my membership level.  :-\

So, we'll make this a poll by reply: What kind of fan are you?

Are you a "Nostalgia Fan", who comes for the memories?

Or, are you an "Adventure Fan", who comes for new rides and new sights?
