General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Passionate or overdoing it??
« on: September 12, 2011, 07:21:58 PM »
I have been coming to Branson since I was about 4 yrs. old.  Before that, my grandparents always took me fishing with them on Bullshoals Lake.  I won't say how long ago that was, but...Branson will always be home to me.  I can close my eyes and remember what it looked like 30 years ago.  I remember how long it took to get from Shepherd of the Hills to Highway DD.  I can hear the train whistle - my favorite "sound" to this day.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes and prayers you sent up for my mom - a complete stranger to you!  She is improving daily.  Wishing everyone a great holiday no matter what you are doing! :)

okiebluegrass that's funny that you should say that about your "happy place".  My mom has been in ICU since June.  Oftentimes, I will sit in the waiting room with my computer and go to my "happy place" doing the same thing as you.  I look thru SDC family photos and websites such as this one, and I feel better.  No, it's not wrong that you did that!! :)

Spouse and I have a date Saturday morning at Sullivan's Mill - cinnamon bread and coffee are on the menu!  A crowd at SDC is better than grading papers, yard work, and cleaning the garage any day!  Hope to see you all there!

Ah! I can help with this one!  I can't stand being cold, and when you spend some of your time in a wheelchair there's fewer calories burning.  I always take heat packs with me.  Tuck them in your hat, gloves, and shoes.  They also make the sticky ones to stick on your shoulders!  Ahhh! If it's really cold, wear thin long underwear - keeps you from feeling too bulky.  Try skinny gloves under your mittens.  Lots of folks carry a small blanket around the park with them.  SDC at Christmas time is Magical!

My best bit of advice - they don't put lids on hot drinks, so...by a mug or bring one with you.  Wassail is HOT! when someone bumps into you and it lands everywhere!!

Kind of fun thinking about being cold!  The school where I teach in not air conditioned, and it was 103 at 2:00 this afternoon!  Yikes!

If GM is not accessible - it's not accessible! There isn't any reason to change it for the few of us that can't manage to enter and enjoy it safely.  I can no longer visit GM, but I don't want it changed or restructured if it's going to take away the integrity of it.  I would rather it be left as is for those that can enjoy it.  There are plenty of other things to do in the park.  People need to use common sense.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / SDC Ride Accessibility Policy
« on: August 20, 2011, 09:28:25 PM »
Does anyone take issue with SDC's new policy of handing out passports for those of us that are "disabled" and would like to enjoy the rides?  Many rides have a separate "handicapped entrance".  In the past this would allow you to get on a ride w/o waiting and also allow you to ride twice.  The new policy is to enter the handicapped entrance, get a time stamped in your passport (which is equal to the wait time of the general public standing in line), and come back at the designated entrance at said time.  I don't mind waiting at all, but...that means that if you need
a chaperone or happen to be using a wheelchair, someone is probably pushing you up and down ramps, getting the passport stamped, pushing you back down the ramp to wait out the designated time, and then pushing you back up/down the ramp to get on the ride.  On shorter wait times, by the time we left the ramped area it was time to turn around and go back.  My husband was exhausted by the time he pushed me up/down the ramp twice at American Plunge just to get on the ride.  On the lost river boats we stood in line for an hour to get my passport stamped (ride time - return in 1 hr.) and discovered that the rest of our party had already finished riding before my "designated ride time", so we just left.  I would not mind waiting for awhile at the handicapped entrance, but the new plan is ver discouraging for the poor chaperone that has to do everything twice!

I agree with the statement that kids like the Homestead Pickers.  They are the most entertaining group in the park.  You might also try to magic show - should appeal to all but your youngest.

I would definitely purchase a ticket for an "after closing" dinner with or w/o the entertainment.  I remember when The Mine Restaurant served a bar-be-que dinner family style that started with a huge pickle and wedge of cheese and ended with a dessert cart.  A steak dinner or something like the Mine used to offer would be a great experience - worth paying for!

Okay, maybe "Old Guy" doesn't want to know, but it's driving me crazy!  What is the special table?

I agree that the quality of food has taken a nose dive.  My daughter and I spent several days in the park last summer and she noted, as well, that portions were smaller and not really hot.  My husband and I made a separate trip and that was the first thing he commented on.   We both had fish dinners and won't do it again.  I just can't bring myself to complain about the skillet dinners though.  Good or bad, I have to have one every time I'm there.  Do you remember the good old days when the Dine In The Mine restaurant would seat you and then bring over a plate with pickles and a large wedge of cheese?  Meals were served "family style" and desserts were brought around on a tray?  Ah, one of my fondest memories!

Gas prices in Illinois have just reached $3.99.  We have a 5 l/2 hr. drive to Branson. We will make only two trips to SDC this year, one in the summer and one (hopefully) during the Christmas season. I am wishing I hadn't purchased 4 season passes, but who knew at the time what was coming down the line. We plan to stay a few days longer each trip instead of making multiple trips like we usually do.  As far as boating, well, that may be out of the question for this year. We'll also take advantage of free breakfast at the hotel and  fill up on snacks before entering the park.  Servings are usually large enough at the park that two can share if needed.  I teach also - that means not rich, but not poor.  I grew up vacationing with a cooler in the car and a bag of groceries.  Looks like we might be doing the same thing this year to cut corners.  What a bummer!  The best part of vacationing is EATING OUT.

The crown jewel of SDC is their christian principles and knowing that most of their guests are families, many with young children.  It cost a fortune to take a family to an amusement park for the day.  I hope they keep this in mind when making changes.  I can't think of a better place to get the most bang for your buck and feel that your family is safe and happy than inside the confounds of SDC.  Our family members that that ride the water rides usually wear nylon gym shorts because they dry so quickly.

A sad, sad day will come when they take away the train robbery.  I like some of the new things about the park, but I hate to see traditions go the way side.  The train ride is one of my most memorable memories as a kid at SDC.  I took my sister and her girls to the park last summer.  She hadn't been there since she was a kid, and the first thing she wanted to do was ride the train and experience the robbery.  Her teenage girls were whining about having to sit through a train ride, but they laughed and enjoyed it as much as we did.  SOME THINGS JUST NEED TO BE LEFT ALONE!  I hope the park doesn't give up their "roots" for profit and progress.

So, what's this new area all about?  Will it (hopefully) fit in with the theme of the park?
