General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: 2011 Trip Reviews
« on: October 24, 2011, 09:49:03 AM »
We arrived at the park last Saturday morning about 11:00, after the 4 hour drive from Little Rock.  We ended up in Parking Lot 6 which I don't think we've ever parked at before but they filled it up before Parking Lot 5 in anticipation of a large crowd. My daughter was celebrating her 8th birthday so she wore her "birthday hat" which is a pink cake with candles on top and a tiara across the front with Birthday Princess.  Needless to say she got lots of well wishes for her birthday.  We rode the Flooded Mine twice in a row (always our first ride unless it's shut down).  Then went over to the GE for a couple of rides.  None of these had very long lines despite the fact the park ended up with over 14,000 in attendance!  We ended up riding Fire in the Hole 4 times on Saturday.  The lines were pretty long for that.  We rode Thunderation twice and the lines were short for that but they were running 2 trains.  What amazed me was how long the lines were for the train.  Everytime we went to ride it the line was backed up to where the Build a Bear house is now (formerly Becca's Weaving).  They were just running the engine and 3 cars so that could explain the line.  I don't think I ever saw it run only 3 cars before.  At 1pm we went to the bakery to pick up the birthday cake we had ordered in Sept. We had cake and drinks at the bakery then took pieces of cake to citizens of the City that had wished my daughter a Happy Birthday.  We started this tradition 3 years ago.  Ramone at  the Flooded Mine is always very nice and sings Happy Birthday to her so he and his fellow mine workers always get cake.

Yeah, we usually see her greeting guests arriving on the trams or waving goodbye to everyone as we exit into the Hospitality House.  A very pretty and friendly girl.  She seems to be as frequently seen as Shorty and Deputy Melvin Lump.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Frisco Silver Dollar Line
« on: October 15, 2011, 07:27:40 PM »
When I worked on the railroad there were a lot of complaints about the height of the cars. I haven't seen it yet but my guess is the rounded design is to give some more head room. There was also a thought to make the cars look more light freight cars and make the train look more mixed to stay close to historical accuracy to what a train would have looked like in this area. There were many changes going on while I was there and though the classic design may be different it should be noted that they will bring about more accuracy. Something that people say is lacking at the city. The new design also will include a new braking system, something the train also needs badly.

Glad to see your post, Steam Freak!  We miss seeing you as conductor/train robber on the Frisco.

My wife and 2 nieces coule/would ride all day of they could.... me? makes me dizzy just looking at it! ::) ::)

Same here!  It's my wife and son's favorite ride.  I do really like the theming of it, however.  I remember how excited I was to ride it the first time and when I got off the first thing I thought was I'm too old to go upside down- let's ride Fire in the Hole!  :D

Rube, are you enjoying "Born Out of Season"?  I really liked that book.  Like your new avatar by the way.

great movie, never read the book.  I also enjoy the lonesome dove series.

I haven't gotten a chance to see the movie yet but I've seen the trailer and it looks like it follows the book pretty closely.  "Lonesome Dove" is my favorite novel of all time.  Larry McMurtry really hit it out of the park with that one.

"The White Buffalo" by Richard Sale.  A fantasy about Wild Bill Hickok and Crazy Horse teaming up to kill a white buffalo that haunts them both.  I read it every year about this time.  It was made into a movie back in 1975 starring Charles Bronson and Will Sampson.   I read a lot of westerns.
