General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: RiverBlast

Judging by the hour wait we had last Saturday I'd say the ride is doing great.  A little "secret" though:  you can get just as wet by finding a water cannon and shooting at the people on the boats.  That way you don't have the long wait and can go take a break, go to the bathroom, etc.

Just curious...Are there other books that deal with SDC history other than Crystal Payton's "The Story of Silver Dollar City", and the new anniversary book?  I would like to see one that has more detail.  I'd like to hear more about things like the process of building FITH and FMS, the theming philosophy, and a better chronology of the development of the park.  HB, maybe you should write one!   :D

I have a book from the late 80s called "Shad" by Margaret Newton that tells the story of Shad Heller who pretty much was the Blacksmith/Mayor from the opening day until he passed away in the early 90s.  You might check on eBay or Amazon or something like it for the book.  I highly recommend it.  Also a book from the early 90s called "Born Out of Season" by Marshall Ralph Hooker who was SDCs 1st Marshall.  He has some interesting stories including one about some young guy in a brand new straw cowboy hat who was there with a couple of young ladies and kept following Marshall Hooker around and heckling him.  He was calling him Wyatt Earp and asked if he was "quick on the trigger".  Finally Marshall Hooker got fed up and told him to toss his new cowboy hat in the air.  The guy did and Marshall Hooker drew his gun and blew the middle out of the hat with a black-powder blank.  Funny but I can't imagine that happening today.  :D

I rode FITH a few times with my son last Saturday but on Sunday once he didn't want to ride so I ended up riding next to an older gentlemen (looked to be late 60s).  When it was over he said "Kiddie ride" kind of sarcastically so I told him it was one of my favorites because of the story it told.  Hopefully I "converted" him!  ;D

Jesse James territory is unfamiliar to me but I do remember Jesse James Confusion Hill that was on Hwy 76 in Branson.

I was wondering where that was- cool scene.  I'm glad they took the "ghosts" out of the tower- scared my son.  The prisoners trying to escape through the tower is a better scene than the "ghosts".

I actually kind of like the fact that they turned it into a shooting gallery.  To each his/her own I guess.  I do miss the fake rocks falling at you from the tower.  I think they took that out in the early 80s.

It's interesting that in the photo montage they stuck a picture of Ed Harris as City Marshall Virgil Cole from the movie "Appaloosa"...

Speaking of Dogpatch, here's a story our local news did on it tonight: http://arkansasmatters.com/content/news/fulltext/?cid=315391

Sad but interesting.

Random Talk / Re: The Newbies Thread

Hi, I've been on this site about a month and done a few posts.  I took my alias Duelist from the style of Cowboy Action Shooting I do.  The Duelist category fires the six-shooters one handed.  I live 20 miles southwest of Little Rock and have been going to SDC since 1969 so I got to do a lot of the early things like ride the stagecoach, Jim Owen's Float Trip and Herman the Hermit's treehouse.  I'm a big Old West Fanatic and SDC definitely helped keep my interest in that over the years.  I, my wife and 2 kids are all season pass holders.  My wife and I have had season passes since 1990.  I found this site by Googling "new ride at Silver Dollar City".  And I second Paul Harvey when he said "May there ever be a Silver Dollar City"!

We used to ask to be seated upstairs, but if you're the only ones up there, they sometimes forget to bring you extra coffee/drinks.  If it's busy and the upstairs is open they're more than happy to have volunteers eat upstairs because a lot of customers won't go up there because of the stairs you have to climb and they have bad knees, backs, whatever.

One of the fun things we like to do at the City is hang out near the train depot and watch people "jump" when the train blows it's whistle as it's departing the depot.  I've seen peole spill drinks, scream, jump 5 feet in the air, etc.   But they always end up laughing about it afterward. Especially fun when it's a group of teenage girls.  They "scare" real good. It's like watching the scarecrow "come to life" outside of the Hospitality House during the Fall festival.  Anyone else have anything unusual they would like to share?
