General Silver Dollar City Talk / Fall Crafts Festival
« on: September 04, 2012, 08:10:38 AM »
Anybody going to SDC during the crafts festival this fall? What are your favorite things to see and do? I love visiting with the fiddle maker, Ms. Hensley. I always loved the decorations on park at that time of the year, the cooler days, and the changing colors of the leaves. How about you? I hope to make one or two trips up during the festival.

Branson Talk / Tornado update
« on: September 01, 2012, 12:28:27 PM »
Noticed on my trip to Branson last week work still progresses on the clean up to the tornado in the spring. Branson Heights shopping center is gone! Concrete slabs, some gravel, some weeds, and some real estate signs are all that are left. Noticed Starvin' Marvin's was open again, Ozarkland still wasted...although most debris is cleaned up. Went on top of Mount Branson, and that trailer park neighborhood the tourists don't see is still a disaster zone...debris and torn up mobile homes all over the place. Some work has been done at Candlestick Inn, but not much.  The broken windows at the Hilton are repaired, things downtown look good. Anyone else have some tornado recovery information?

SDC Memories/ Park History / SDC Ride Photos and Tintypes
« on: September 01, 2012, 12:22:17 PM »
Does anybody buy the photos they take of you on some of the thrill rides like Wildfire or Powder Keg? How about the tintype shop? Do you and your family dress up and get a group photo while on your trips? Our family had one made when I was a kid in 1978. I did some individual tintypes in costume when I worked at SDC, and had a group tintype made each year at end of summer. Since then...not once. If you have a ride photo or a tintype, post it here, I'm sure everyone would love to take a look. You can see several of my tintypes from those days long ago on my flickr site. Branson Talk / Branson Centennial Museum
« on: August 29, 2012, 05:12:41 PM »
2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Branson. The chamber of commerce and the White River Historical Society have teamed up to present a museum in downtown Branson. My wife and I visited last week, and it is small, but nice. The lady at the counter said she was interested in me bringing by some of my memoribilia so it can be scanned into their data base. I thought about taking my Hee Haw Theater stuff up, because my guess is the SDC file is pretty full for them already. The museum is located at the four way stop of Main Street and Hwy 65.
Signs are up, and there is parking, so next time you are in Branson, I encourage you to stop by and take a look. No admission charge, and exhibits rotate out every few weeks.

Construction/Rumors / Treehouse update?
« on: August 22, 2012, 05:49:20 PM »
I was wondering if anyone...especially our current insiders...have heard anything on the status of the treehouse? Zephon, Copper...are you out there? Could they put together the funds to build a new and improved treehouse that would meet all handicapped standards? I think they could. If there is a will, there is a way. What do you think?

Random Talk / Andy Griffith Dies
« on: July 03, 2012, 10:04:13 AM »
About 7am today in North Carolina, Andy Griffith died. It was listed as a breaking news story on my AOL computer homepage. God bless, Andy...and thanks sooooo much for all those good ole episodes of TAGS you have left behind here for us to enjoy! I know it will be a grand reunion day for you and Don Knotts, and George Lindsey, and other cast members, as you all get together and have a few laughs up there in that big TV studio in the sky!  ;D

Random Talk / Eureka Springs, AR circa 1980
« on: June 12, 2012, 05:33:09 PM »
If Branson has a sister tourist city nearby, it's gotta be Eureka Springs, AR. 100 year old buildings, strong Ozarks history, live music theaters, natural beauty, Passion Play, and the out of proportion Christ of the Ozarks statue, by the same artist that did the Eureka Springs Farwell Dinosaur Park sculptures. Here is a blast from the past...tourist brochures, postcards, and so on, from Eureka Springs from about 1980. See it all at the Flickr site:     http://www.flickr.com/photos/juniordugan

Other Parks / 1982 SDC Tennessee Brochure
« on: June 09, 2012, 03:19:26 AM »
Found among items my sister bid on at an auction recently was a vintage 1982 SDC Tennessee brochure! It has a tie in to the Worlds Fair at Knoxville. You gotta view this brochure, I'd never seen it before...       http://www.flickr.com/photos/juniordugan

SDC Memories/ Park History / Branson in 1977! (photos)
« on: June 06, 2012, 09:52:47 AM »
My sister purchased at auction a lot of old brochures, postcards, and so on, featuring Branson in 1977. She knew of my love for all things related to SDC, Branson, and the Ozarks, and sent the material to me. So now I am sharing it. Remember the Foggy River Boys Theater? How about Plummer Family Theater? What about Sammy Lane Pirate Cruise? SDC added a major addition to the park in 1977, the "Deepwoods" area that added 25% to the park, and featured something called the diving bell. See it all at:     http://www.flickr.com/photos/juniordugan           :D

Branson Talk / Shepherd of the Hills Story
« on: May 08, 2012, 08:44:51 AM »
Some of you will remember that I do some freelance writing on topics of Ozarks history and folklore. I've currently got a story in the latest edition of Life in the Ozarks, an On-line magazine. If you would like to read my brief history of the Shepherd of the Hills Homestead, check out the Website, and go to feature stories. It is right at the top of the page:     www.lifeintheozarks.com          Hope you like it. There is another story I've written in the Traveling the Ozarks section of the magazine, too.

SDC Memories/ Park History / Mystery Photo
« on: May 03, 2012, 05:04:41 PM »
I wanted to play an alternative game to our "Where in the City" by offering on my Flickr site an old mystery photo and giving everyone a chance to identify it. The photo is from 1979. On stage at the theater is the talented D.A. Calloway, a musician and singer, and he is putting on a music and comedy show to entertain guests. My questions for all of you:  1) What is the name of the theater he is performing at? and 2) How is the structure utilized in 2012? The little outdoor theater pictured is long gone, the theater does not exist. The stage is still in the original location but it is utilizedfor a different purpose. Clue: look at the roofline of the structure. By the way, D.A. Calloway still works on park as a manager or director of some type in the Entertainment Department. But no more singing and playing for him today. Take a guess...

General Silver Dollar City Talk / 2012 Trip Reviews
« on: March 15, 2012, 04:54:11 PM »
Forsythia and dogwood in full bloom, picture perfect weather, friendly "citizens" and a beautiful opening day at SDC for 2012!!! Here is a brief trip report:   Got to the park at 8:15am and parked right at stop 2, had a tram waiting for me that whisked me directly to the park entrance. Moderate sized crowds, no long waits at any rides. Park does look very good, cleaned, swept, painted, spruced up, and all ready to go! Construction underway at Echo Hollow stage, new location for Christmas Hollow in the old woodcarvers location is nice, much more room. Woodcarvers now located in OLD Christmas Hollow location, not yet open, it will be a few weeks. All your favorite entertainers on park, got to see Doc Gizmo, Pure Heart, and Sons of the Silver Dollar. BIG NEWS regarding the mystery ride for 2013. The site of the Old Robbers Shack was covered today by construction workers, much concrete down, many trees cut, big loading station apparently being built here. Down the hill toward the mule barn, many concrete pylons scattered on the hillside. They cleared alot of trees there too. Only mention by the conductor on the train is basic: "folks you'll notice alot of new construction along the tracks, a new attraction is coming next year, more about that later in the year." I made a whirlwind trip through the park as my time and money were restricted today, and was NOT able to make it to Branson to tour the tornado damage, but I asked several citizens how Branson looked and everyone was positive, upbeat, and said much has been cleaned up, but added it will take a while to get everything done. Out of the park and in my car by 12:30pm.  Photos of everything on my Flickr site! Click on the photos to enlarge them, and to read the full captions. Hope to see you later in the season at SDC!  ;D ;D ;D         http://www.flickr.com/photos/juniordugan   FOOTNOTE: Everything looked normal at Wilson's Farm, I could NOT tell how people will enter the new ride area. I guess that will come later. I assume they will move something or build beside the HiLow Towers or giant swing for the guests to access the new attraction. Oh by the way, the concrete pylons laid out on the hill toward the Mule Barn are only about 50 feet away from Hobo Junction! When the trees are full of leaves, it really won't matter. Hobo Junction is safe (for now) and the new ride...whatever it is...will fill up the entire space the trees have been removed from.

Admin Edit: Reformatted topic title to fit the format we started in 2010, stickyed so that this will be the official trip report thread. - Shavethewhales

Random Talk / 150th Anniversary of The Battle of Pea Ridge
« on: March 08, 2012, 04:28:58 PM »
Kind of late notice to those who might be interested, but the activities recognizing the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Pea Ridge will take place Friday & Saturday & Sunday, March 9th and 10th and 11th (THIS weekend) at and near Pea Ridge National Military Park, Pea Ridge, Arkansas. This Civil War battle was the largest west of the Mississippi, and the battlefield is one of the best preserved in the nation. The Union forces won the battle, securing Missouri and keeping it safe from Confederate occupation. If the Confederates would have won, they would have pushed back on up to Springfield, MO, then move right toward St. Louis to capture the Jefferson Barracks Arsenal there. I live only about 5 miles from the park and will be at some of the activities Friday and Saturday. Here is a line up of what is scheduled for this weekend: FRIDAY: re-enactment of the Bentonville, AR skirmish at the Bentonville square at 10:30am. A concert featuring Civil War era music at 7pm at the Shewmaker Center, Northwest Arkansas Community College, Bentonville/Rogers, AR. SATURDAY: Federal and Confederate infantry and calvary demonstrations at the park at Pea Ridge throughout the day, a program about battle flags, and a battlefield candle luminary program. SUNDAY: artillery, infantry and calvary demonstrations at the park. Everyone likes the top ten lists on this site, so here are a few about the Battle of Pea Ridge:

1) This battle featured Confederate use of Cherokee fighters, one of only a handful of battles to feature Native Americans.
2) Elkhorn Tavern was used as a field hospital. Civilians hiding in the cellar abandoned it and ran for other cover when blood dripping
through floor cracks made it unbearable to stay in the cellar.
3) Soldiers on both sides were amazed to see U.S. Brigadier General Alexander Asboth's dog, "York" trotting alongside his horse as the battle raged.
4) Brigadier General Ben McCulloch was surveying the battle from horseback and came into an open area to get a better look and was shot dead
by a Confederate sharpshooter after exposing himself.
5) Confederate Major General Earl Van Dorn was later killed in Tennessee by a jealous husband. He's the only general on either side of the war to
die at the hand of a civilian.
6) Many of the soldiers at Pea Ridge spoke German as a first language. There was a large detachment of Germans fighting for (I think) the Federals.
7) Sometimes small children visting the battlefield today scream in terror and throw fits. Park rangers say little kids, sensitive to their surroundings,
occasionally hear the sounds of the battle and won't calm down until they get to the visitors center located on the edge of the field of war.
8) Elkhorn Tavern was a stopping place for food and lodging along the Butterfield Stagecoach Company route.
9) Elkhorn Tavern was a stopping place for Native Americans on their forced walk along the "Trail of Tears." The Indians recieved their last
Federal rations on their march prior to entering Indian Territory in Oklahoma.
10) Thousands of Confederate troops hid the night before the battle in a cave at Bentonville.

Pea Ridge National Military Park is located just north of Rogers, AR, and is the gateway attraction leading into Eureka Springs and a little further down the road, Branson. Come on by and visit sometime. Everyone should explore the places where our American history was shaped, and Pea Ridge is one of the best places you can come to learn about the struggle our country went through 150 years ago! :)
