General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Pets inside SDC
« on: July 14, 2010, 01:58:03 PM »
I work part-time at the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. Pet's are not allowed in the visitor's center, but service animals are allowed.  According to our guidelines, if a guest tells us it's a service animal, we can't question it. Which makes me wonder how many animals that come inside the building are trained "service" animals.

The preferred parking area was "sold out" each time we tried to use it May 23-25.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Beer sales at SDC?
« on: July 05, 2010, 01:02:45 PM »
NO!  would be my first and best answer.
The only way I could even remotely see this working is if they were able to legally set up a still (It can be done with the proper licensing) and then sold samples at a high price (so people couldn't afford to get smashed).
But ultimately I think keeping alcohol out of the park is the best answer.

Also, let's stay away from the "Good Christians shouldn't drink" debate. Prior to the Temperance movement of the 19th century, alcohol was not considered taboo for "Christians." Luther drank, the Puritans had beer on the Mayflower, and a Baptist preacher invented Burbon Whiskey. Jesus, Paul and the early disciples drank wine (The debate about the alcohol content of wine in Biblical days is also irrelevant, since you could still get drunk if you drank too much). And evidently, even the Lord enjoyed a drink every once in a while (Numbers 28:7).

Gotta go with Abbott and Costello.  "Who's on first?" is a classic comedy routine, that is still performed today!

Random Talk / Re: Special perks for SDCFans.com?

I disagree with any eligibility for members based on posts or length of time here.

Andy, consider this...I joined this forum 6 months before you did, yet you have 4 times as many posts as I do. The content and number of one's posts reveals your passion as much as your longevity.

In the end the eligibility requirements don't really matter to me.  As long as the community is preserved on this forum. What makes this forum special is that people here are passionate about SDC.   I'd hate to see people joining this forum just to get the freebie and not because they are passionate about SDC, if any of these ideas come to pass.

It would probably be impossible for all SDCFans members to come to a singular event.  But if we were given enough notice, many of us probably could.  In addition, if this were made an annual event most of us could make it to one eventually.  Personally, I'm not looking for a discount, I just want an opportunity to see more of the park and share my heart with some of the powers that be.  Also, I think most of us are on this forum because we are passionate about SDC.  I'd hate to see people joining this forum just to get a freebie. IMHO.

Or, if we couldn't get enough people for Zephon's idea. How about an SDCFANS day at the park where we pay regular admisssion to the park, but would get a behind the scenes tour, some extra ride time (FITH in the dark or with lights on, etc.) and some face-time with an executive to whom we could share our ideas/concerns about the park. This could be possibly be done with a smaller group of people. Signing up for the event could take place on this board.  If more people signed-up than there was space available, the site admins could award space to members by seniority (how long they've been a member of SDCFANS). This would prevent people from signing up just to get the free stuff.

That would be cool, Junior.  If SDC offered something special to SDC Fans members.  There'd have to be some kind of stipulation though, wouldn't there?. We wouldn't want people signing up for the forum just to get a freebee.

Branson Talk / Re: Where do you stay when you go to Branson?
« on: June 29, 2010, 01:33:29 AM »
We used to stay at the Settle Inn (looks like a castle) on Green Mountain Drive.  The rooms were always nice and clean.  Then we discovered Deer Run.  We stay there all the time now.  If all you are wanting to do is go to SDC.  You can't really beat Deer Run for its convenience and close proximity.

Random Talk / What's the dumbest question you've ever been asked?
« on: June 26, 2010, 12:27:44 AM »
For those of you who work with the public...what's the dumbest question you've ever been asked?  Working at the Gateway Arch in St. Louis.  I've had my share of doozies, including..."Is it true you can see the Statue of Liberty from here?"  "Is it true they are going to move the Arch?"  And the granddaddy of them all, "Is the Arch man-made or is it a natural phenomenon?"

I too am a Pastor.  I pastor a small country church in south-central Illinois. I also work part-time as a tour guide at the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, MO.  My company sub-contracts for the NPS.  So Pastor Don we have a few things in common....we both Pastor, we both work at national monuments, and we both love SDC!  Plus the Badlands and Black Hills of South Dakota are my favorite places to vacation (next to SDC, of course).

Ghosts of Marmoros would be awesome!  They could start in the 1880's and segue to today or vica versa.  Either way it would be a killer show.  Or how 'bout this.  The show features a solitary actor who tells the history of Marmoros/SDC using holograms and then at the end while showing a live picture of main street he just fades away. I too sat mouth-opened several minutes after the first time I saw the show at the Lincoln museum.  The most sobering moment I ever had there was when they had a special exhibit on Lincoln's assassination.  They had the pair of gloves he had worn to the theater that night. They were white and kinda small (long but narrow) and they had blood stains on them.  Looking at those was very chilling.

Has anyone seen the holographic show at the Lincoln Library in Springfield, IL?

I have, multiple times.  I've even seen different actors play the part.  It's incredible.  If any of you ever get a chance to go to the Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield, IL.  This show is worth the price of admission itself.  It would be great if SDC could incorporate that type or technology into a show.  But I'm guessing it's pretty expensive.  Maybe they could get a sponsor to pay for it?

On the square at Christmastime, watching all the lights and the giant tree and just feeling the spirit that is SDC.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Spiritual feelings at SDC
« on: June 23, 2010, 01:25:52 AM »
I never really noticed anthing until we started coming for Christmas about 8 years ago, and then it was just awe-inspiring.  SDC really has a special spirit that is rooted in the faith of her founders. I feel that spirit everytime I go there, and it beckons me to come back.  I feel sorry for the multitudes that walk through her gates and never take time to sense that spirit. I know I didn't for a long time. But now I drink deeply of it every time I have the opportunity.
