Random Talk / Special Places
« on: July 24, 2012, 09:26:08 PM »
For most of us here, SDC is a very special place.  It just has that unique "spirit" or "vibe".  It is a place where we  always feel rejuvenated after visiting.  I was wondering where are some of your other favorite "special places" where you can feel that same (or similar) spirit.  For me those places are Nauvoo, Il and the Black Hills of South Dakota.  What are some of your special places?

Ozark Marketplace / Nauvoo, Illinois
« on: July 07, 2012, 11:32:59 PM »
If anyone is looking for an inexpensive, fun, family-friendly vacation or day-trip spot in the Midwest, then I heartily recommend Nauvoo, Illinois.  Nauvoo is located about 3 hrs north of St. Louis, MO.  My family has visited there dozens of times.  Nauvoo is a type of restored 1840's village with several original homes and some living history demonstrations.  The vast majority of the sites and demonstrations are free.  Now most of the sites are owned and operated by the Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons), so expect a religious sales pitch (it's not overbearing, but it is there).  But if you can tolerate that it's a fun place to go. (For the record my family is  Baptist).  Nauvoo is also home to Baxter's Vineyards, Illinois oldest winery, several bed and breakfasts, and one of the best buffet's in the entire world at Hotel Nauvoo.  For more information check out my blog  www.thenauvoopioneer.blogspot.com .

Branson Talk / Petra comes to Branson
« on: June 28, 2012, 11:52:38 PM »
No, not the ancient city, but the band "Petra".   Actually its the "Classic Petra" line-up.  August 25, 2012 at the Tri-Lakes Center.  For those of you who don't know who Petra is, they were one of the more successful bands that came out of the Jesus movement of the 1960's.  They pioneered much of what you find in contemporary worship today.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Apple Dumpling's
« on: May 22, 2012, 11:16:19 PM »
In light of our recent discussions on the declining quality of certain foods at SDC, I would like to give a shout-out to my favorite SDC delicacy....the Apple Dumpling (preferably with cinnamon ice cream). These deliciously, decadent, dumplings never fail to please.  Sometimes they can be very hard to find.  But, there is one stand that sells them year round (or at least they did last year) and that is at the stand next to the exit of FITH.  Happy eating!

Just curious, but do they have Riverblast decorated/open for Christmas this year?

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Hot Chocolate with "The Works"
« on: November 22, 2011, 02:41:13 PM »
Hot Chocolate with "The Works" (ie whipped cream, chocolate chips, and a candy cane) is a holiday favorite and mandatory refreshment among many of us here.  But unfortunately, not every stand that sells hot chocolate at SDC, offers "The Works".   So I'm starting this thread to provide an easy reference for those of us who love this particular version of the drink.

I know the Hot Chocolate stand on the square sells Hot Chocolate with "The Works".  There used to be a stand over by ThuNderaTion, that sold it.  What other locations sell this particular delicacy?   Thanks!

Branson Talk / Living in Branson
« on: November 16, 2011, 10:58:05 AM »
My wife and kids have often dreamed about moving to Branson (I'd be all for it too, just to be close to SDC).  But for those who live or have lived in Branson, is living there as fun as visiting there?  Or, does familiarity breed contempt?  Just curious.  I can imagine the traffic would get old real quick.

Random Talk / St. Louis Cardinals
« on: October 31, 2011, 12:36:11 PM »
In the words of the late Jack Buck "I don't believe what I just saw." Congratulations to the Cardinals on their improbable, phenomenal World Series Run.  And thanks to manager Tony LaRussa for all the memories.  LaRussa announced today that he is retiring as their manager.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Deal of the Weekend
« on: September 12, 2011, 03:36:49 PM »
The Leather shop had men's leather jackets on sale for $39.99 (the price on the tag was $199.00).  I bought two--one for my son and one for me.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Opening Ceremony
« on: September 12, 2011, 01:47:57 PM »
This is the first year we have ever made it to an opening ceremony at SDC.  We are NOT morning people so we usually arrived at the park after it was already opened.  But this year we resolved to get there early and we are glad we did.  The theme song, recognizing of the Veterans, Flag raising, Pledge, and National anthem are a great way to start the day.  Now, does anybody know why they do not do the opening ceremony during Old-Time Christmas?

Though we like to visit SDC 2-3 times a year, this year will mark our first trip to the Harvest Festival in about 13 years.  What are your recommendations of things we shouldn't miss?  Thanks!

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Tinker the Talking Christmas Tree
« on: May 09, 2011, 09:09:31 PM »
Does anybody remember "Tinker" the Christmas tree show from a few years ago.  I know we are a ways away from OTC, but I was thinking about him the other day.  I miss Tinker.  The Frosty show they have now, is alright, but Tinker was better IMHO. For one thing Tinker was original to SDC, whereas Frosty is plastered all over our TV's at Christmas time.  Grandma wrote to SDC and was told that the tree itself had to be retired because it was falling apart.  But during our last visit, a cast member told me that they had more than one Tinker.  So I would like to start my official unofficial SDCFans Forum petition to bring back Tinker.  I know that the PTB peruse this forum, so if any of you agree with me.....then TESTIFY below.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Rides and Shops
« on: April 13, 2011, 11:44:02 AM »
Are all the rides and shops open for Worldfest?  If not, which ones are still closed?  We'll be heading down there next week and I want to prepare the kids (if some rides are still closed) and grandma (if some shops are still closed).  Thanks.

How much does it cost? (What were the 2010 prices)?
Is it worth it for a family of 7? (2 Adults, 5 kids ages 14, 11, 7, 4, 2)
Thanks for your input.
