They've canned Bob!!!

The worst for me was the "Baldknobber Camp. Ya'll Keep Out" sign on Fire in the Hole. Ugh. Looks like it was made on a Cricut.

Why in the world would a secret vigilante group put up a sign to identify their hiding place anyway?

^Not to mention the last big parking remodel was a huge blunder.  The current parking is hugely confusing, especially for new guests.  There is a lot of unused space, and it's too easy for cars to find themselves on tram-only routes.  Plus the signs often point one direction while the traffic directors aim you in another.  Instead of an engineer, it was as if they hired the Dippin' Dots kid to design the parking lot.  Hopefully, things will be improved.  Only time will tell.

suggestion --- in your travels try -- STRATACA: KS Underground Salt Museum and the Cosmosphere - both in Huchinson KS if you are passing that way. Two very interesting museums - One is a Salt mine tour and the other is a offshoot of the Smithsonian space museum.

Kevin

I can't give a better endorsement for Hutchinson, Kansas.

We've been a couple of times, but finally spent a day at the Cosmosphere.  I can attest that it really does take a full day.  People probably don't imagine a space museum in the middle of the country and in such a small town, but this place is world-class, with the most complete German rocket collection, as well as the largest Russian display outside of Moscow.  As far as the U.S. is concerned, you get to see real artifacts from some of the best of the Apollo Missions, including the Apollo 13 capsule.

Strataca takes you deep into the earth where the salt mine is still in operation.  A couple of riding tours drives you into historic areas that have been untouched since the 1950s.  In one area, movie and television films are stored, as well as props and costumes from some prominent features.  A newspaper in pristine condition displays a headline that announces the assassination of Lincoln.  All of these are preserved in the salt.

I have several pictures in these reports from our legendary COVID travels in 2020:

Received ours in the mail.  Same ol' passes.  Is there an upcharge to turn them into digital?

If you really did not use the passes at all, and they really refuse to roll them over, then they need to issue a refund.  If not, then I would be done with SDC.  I know I did not buy passes for next year, will reevaluate 2024.

I don't think they are really obligated to refund me.  They did issue a working season pass, and it was not their fault that it was unused.

I won't go into it publicly, but things worked out with my season pass issue.  SDC made it work for us.  I will be sure to use my pass in '23.

Well, our attempts to roll over my pass for '23 are coming up as a failure.  Apparently, with the COVID rollover, this would be our third year.  I hadn't imagined the COVID mess would come around to bite us again, but here we are.  They're telling us we can't roll it over, even with a fee, for a third year.  I can't find any rules about it on the website, but there's really nothing we can do about it.  Now we know:  three strikes, you're out - unless that rule changes and they do away with all rollovers in the future.  I mean, it's not like I didn't visit - we used BAFs - but we might have played it a little looser had we known.

If you used any part of the pass benefits it counts as a used pass. If You used the BAFs associated with your pass it counts as using the pass so it would be ineligible for rollover.

We were pretty careful with that.  They said it was the fact that it would be the third year that exempted it from rolling over.

All right.  I know I'm a little late with these, but if you're interested in my Jamestown//Williamsburg/Yorktown reports you can find them at the link below (I'm not going to spend a whole day individually linking them.).  These heavy-on-the-photos reports are located at the bottom of the page under the heading 2022 TEACHERS INSTITUTE RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM where, if interested, you may read about this amazing week.

If you rewatch the video and look at the website, nothing is actually said about the ticket booth/entry area. It is all about traffic flow and parking. I wouldn't expect anything major with the actual entry area based off of what has been announced so far. It is also targeted for completion in 2024, not next year.

https://www.silverdollarcity.com/news/New-For-2023

I guess I took "improve the Guest Entrance experience into Silver Dollar City" and "enhanced pedestrian access routes" to mean something other than the parking and turn lane expenditures.

Im guessing the priority entry could be where the first aid station is. They used that entrance a few years ago for an event.

That's what I figure, unless a larger revamp is underway.

Just noticed: "Priority Gate Entrance"

What is this?

Brad's video mentioned a revamped entry system, and there will be a different gate for those passholders who opt to pay the higher fee.  We've talked about the entry being remodeled for a couple of years, and it sounds like that might come in some form for 2023 - another vintage memory succumbing to progress - but we just can't be sure how intrusive the new system might be on the classic entrance.  It may be no more than a dedicated turnstile.

At the same time, SDC usually gets pretty good publicity for their response to events like this.  The TnT accident was an employee and a different circumstance.  The train derailment has garnered somewhat of a positive response in some circles because those circles trust the company to be honest and caring.  Their reputation remains intact in this, even when they or their representative employees might be at fault or negligent.

I get that rides and festivals are the big draw these days, but I would like to see a more directed effort to make the entire Park much more of the period themed location it started as. It would be difficult as the craftsman are getting harder and harder to find.

I just feel the craftsman are still there but only as theming for the overall park. There used to be much more of a focus on the life and feeling of the time period in the park. Now it seems more like a novelty rather than the purpose. I may  not be making any sense. sorry--- There are so many crafts that are from that period that are no longer in the park. Basket Making, corn brooms, cooperage. the old shingle saw engine has been moved off and is now a decoration in the farm area. Quilting, printing, stained glass - all are gone.

In fact I would be willing to bet that if you polled everyone leaving the park you would be interested to find how few even know there is a homestead area with animals in the park. Even on the busiest days it would be hard find more than a handful of people in the area at any given time.

I know that these days the money and the big crowd draws are not the blacksmith shop or the duplicating lathe, but with the loss of the furniture shop and its equipment, a huge blow to the overall period atmosphere has occurred.  The park began with simple ideas and over time it has slowly become less so.

I just feel if all the attention is on the newest and greatest ride system, eventually the thing that we all love about the park - its ability to transport you to a simpler time, that will be a distant memory. Its already happening , but its not too late. thanks for letting me rant.

my two cents.

Kevin

I think you're talking to the choir here.  Most of us would love to see the old crafts revived in the park.  Part of what used to make SDC unique was the presence of older folks.  They were there for the ambience and the old styles of doing things.  The crafts were scattered throughout the park and not on a schedule.  Guests could just walk up at any time and see things being done.

While the coasters can draw people deeper down the hill, crafts can still have a place in the park.  Still, how do they do this successfully.  The older generation isn't going to pay the price of admission to a full-fledged theme park, but could they pay a fee that gets them limited access?  I'm not sure how this would be done with fidelity.  Could Main Street - along with revamped, high-quality, sit-down restaurants at the Mill and Mine, and the homestead area with craftsmen galore - somehow be opened to the general public for free, with gates to the rest of the park for ticket bearers?

It will be interesting to see how the entry is changed for 2023, but I doubt these things will be considered.  They've focused so much on young families that the rest of us are being priced out and turned off.  After the kids are out of the house, we will probably rarely visit.

It's getting harder to find this thread.  I know it has been five years, but I still like to drift into the dreams during the cooler weather.  Besides, all we have to talk about these days is train wrecks and delayed new attractions.

So how about an escape room?  Do any theme parks have them?  It would be something new that season pass holders might enjoy.

It might be a while until they repair the problem and move on the way it sounds. The state's preliminary investigation wrapped up without determining what caused it.   The state's Amusement Ride Safety Unit will return to the park at a later time to continue that investigation with an engineering firm.

Still, there is also some political leverage to be had, I'm sure.  The Herchends bring lots of buckaroos to the local and state coffers, and I'm sure they have a certain amount of political clout in Jefferson City.  It's not Halloween yet, and while I'm certain things have to go through the process, which could take some time, I also understand that strings can be pulled.  That doesn't mean they'll go through shortcuts to do the job right, but we may be surprised at how quickly things can be done.  Of course, with all the sticky government red tape, things could also go the other direction.  We shall see.
