Random Talk / Re: Do some dang research....
« on: June 21, 2023, 11:02:07 AM »
There's a lot at play here. It is annoying when people just hop on FB to ask for stuff they could easily figure out or get for themselves. There's a lot of learned helplessness from people who have become far too attached to the internet, and especially social media. Weirdly enough, people aren't as tech/internet savy as they were a decade ago. There's less of a learning curve to use anything anymore and therefore people don't build basic skills to figure things out.

Also, FB sucks in general. Both as a platform and as a technology to display discussions and interact with people. When you comment on an FB thread, the order of comments is moved around based on likes and hidden parameters, so it's hard to follow any kind of flow for a conversation. They also hide a lot of comments based on how a given profile or comment is rated in the algorithm. Message boards like this one are still the best platform for actual discussion and posting information that will be easily accessible for years.

Very much this. Facebook has become an evolution of the high school popularity contest. If you are not part of the "clique" (whatever FB determines it as) you get posts buried and treated as an outcast. Unless you pay to "promote" posts. Twitter has sadly followed this model after what's his face took over. Shadowbanning is a real thing. They can't afford to lose or remove users outright because they depend on them for ad revenue. Plus if it shows their user base is dropping it looks bad to shareholders. I've been using both less and less.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: SDC Logo
« on: June 15, 2023, 07:59:30 PM »
So the old logo appears to be a log that is the partial trunk of a tree, with some cut off branches.  In a real tree, of course the branches tend to grow upwards.  So, old log has the stumps of the branches going in the same direction like they would naturally.  New one has them opposite which would mean one branch was growing toward the ground. Perhaps overthinking it but IMO new logo would have been a lot better if they did not have them going in opposite directions.

Its actually a good metaphor of the park not being sure what they wanna be anymore.
:-X ::)

Thought this was interesting, SDC straight up asking people on Facebook what they want to see come to the park next. It mirrors the discussions we had here. I take it the admin is probably on these forums? https://www.facebook.com/sdcattractions/posts/10161019789837603

Yeah I was relieved to see more people upset than the select ignorant few that said "Good! Tear that racist POS down." (yes there was one comment I saw on their FB page announcement that didn't have a clue about the Baldknobbers)

They made it "Facebook official" this morning. I posted a comment on how the bottom limb was facing the wrong direction on the new logo. My comment was swiftly silenced by the person who runs their social media. I am not sure if changing the orientation of the bottom limb was an oversight, or perhaps an artistic choice. Either way, I think the new logo is... serviceable.  ;)

Fixed. Took me a whole two minutes in PhotoShop. lol

Also interesting to note they went back to the minimalist logo design. Though it's even more minimalist than the old one.

There are overprotective parents that view any single male in a place where there are children as a likely child predator.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Train Crash?
« on: May 26, 2023, 07:03:31 AM »
Considering the proximity of these events within the past two years when stacked against their 60 years of operation and the park avoiding transparency with reports and deleting social media posts as mentioned a few posts back, if true, it does not look good on the park either way. Not to mention the employee getting killed on TNT. The latter was definitely gross incompetence and lack of communication between operators and maintenance staff. Regardless if its a guest or employee, one fatality is one too many and could have been prevented.

Until recently this park has enjoyed a stellar safety and maintenance record, but it could also be a cause for complacency and all these incidents happening are now exposing it.

I'm not one to tout conspiracies but I can't help but think this is sabotage and not gross incompetence. I never believed the fire was an accident either TBH

Personally I will be glad when Failbook and Twitler go the way of MySpace.

BBQ? What BBQ? Yeah I forgot to mention in my report that the BBQ festival was laskluster (to put it nicely) on my last visit. There wasn't even the BBQ tasting tent or BBQ related merch to buy like in years past. The day I went the smokehouse wasn't even open. I get the feeling the festival may get canned or rebranded for something else next season.

I'd love to be wrong, but I would not expect a straight remake of FITH at the new location. Its been pretty clear in recent years that SDC has gotten pretty loose with sticking with their original theme. Best advice is to expect the new ride to be in the general flavor of FITH but with some fancy modern tech and other gimmicks to hype it. The original theme/story won't likely return. Look at Lost River being remade into Mystic River Falls as a recent example.

I just hope the new ride is more reliable than MRF as the latter was broken down all day yet again when I visited on Friday, that ride is officially the parks new Buzzsaw Falls.
(maybe they need to avoid ride names with the word "Falls" in it to break the curse lol)

I realized I forgot to do my first visit of the year trip report...

I attended SDC by myself two Mondays ago and I must say I think its my new favorite day to go. Temps were in the 60's and it remained mostly sunny. Even with the nice weather I am sure there were only 1-2k people at the park that day as it felt like I had it to myself. Nearly everything was a walk on except Powderkeg and the only other crowds were at FITH and the Train. Even Time Traveler had no lines. I was one of two people on the whole TT train, its too bad SDC doesn't allow re-rides on the coasters on slow days anymore. They still make you get off and walk all the way back around again. ThuNderaTion was riding a bit better minus the tunnel segment and the front car of the 2nd train was missing from the workshop. Still bummed they cut down most of the remaining trees around the track along the lift hill and around the lower part of the ride near TT.

My main report I wish to make is I did ride the train for the first time post accident on this trip and outside of the robbery I did notice the absence of jokes and whatnot, it was basically a ride thru commercial advertising stuff around the park and of course the usual turn your ticket into a season pass talk. No moonshine, no Ichabod jokes, no brakes jokes, no saloon references, no "happy days are here again jokes", no "shake yer fist and call em ugly" jokes, and most notably, the old wreck props were completely removed among other small things I noticed along the way. I am hoping it was just an off day because of the lighter crowds but with the various props removed I fear this is the norm now. (fortunately Pottersville and the Robbery Shack are still present) I am hoping they will add new material or something because the ride thru chatter basically being a series of advertisements as it currently sits may get old after awhile.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Danny Eakin retiring
« on: May 04, 2023, 11:03:25 PM »
Well that sucks for us. I hope he has a happy retirement, but he and the rest of the Pickers are pretty much irreplaceable.

SDC already feels different since Cedric/Cajun Connection left, even though they were never really part of the whole 1880's Missouri theme, lol. You can't just lose a long time piece of the culture like that and expect it to be the same. Not sure what the park can do about it, but I hope they seek out other performers to take up residence.

While one can attribute it to "progress" SDC in retrospect has really been feeling different for a decade now. Though I have noted it has really accelerated since JoDee died and Pete has gotten reclusive. I remember often bumping into them at the park during my visits. I think the last time I ever saw him was in 2018.

^ I agree.  I like the tower drop with the splashdown but I'm not a fan of the constant spinning.

Yeah that was unexpected for me too, I didn't expect to spin more on that ride than on Time Traveler. That should say something.
