That's odd, how long has that sunken mine been there? I've never seen it in any of the old photos.

Long before Celebration City they prepossed new sections to SDC. You would start in 1880’s SDC and then travel to the 1920’s, 1940’s, 1960’s and so forth. This was back when they were having trouble deciding, “Should we build larger rides and how should we incorporate them in to our theme?”

Ugg, so they were considering going the Dollywood route. That would have been awful, as the beauty of SDC, in my opinion, is in it's charm and feel. When I go to SDC, I feel like I'm in a whole different world. At any other park, including DW, I'm just at another amusement park. Not that DW is bad, it just has so much less atmosphere and charm than SDC. I hope they keep to the singular city theme as long as possible.

^Heh, I knew they must be considering a woodie, all the enthusiasts like myself are begging them for one. I don't see why they would take out Echo Hollow for it though, as that's their largest theatre' if I'm not mistaken.

Apparently when Geyser Gulch was built, it was supposed to have a stage with daily live shows, and in-between shows, characters such as Rube Dugin and other old favorites would roam around the area, interacting with guests.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Crowd Levels?

Who knows, but this is going to be one of the weekends with some of the biggest names in Gospel, so that should draw quite a few people. Remember, SDC largest crowd-draw are older Christian folk who come for the music, shows, and shops.

I was told that this weekend would be one of SDC's busiest, as odd as that is. Has anyone gone?

No, I just lived there for a couple of years when my father got a temporary job assignment there. It was quite a few years ago now, but still, I remember the social system fondly.

SDC Memories/ Park History / Random Stuff Round-Up

So I've been considering adding a page to the site of all the random and pointless SDC facts out there that are little known and easily forgotten.

Here's a few examples -

The Grand Exposition was originally slated to be take the place of Tom Sawyer's Landing
A Wild Mouse coaster was proposed to take the place of the Waterboggin (Thanks, Copper)
Grandfather's Mansion once had a ladder that lead up to a hole in the ceiling where visitors could chat with Grandpa.

Anyone know any others?

^Exactly, there's a lot to be said for the SDC style of building, where they build into the existing environment rather than leveling everything and building from there.

I lived for awhile in England, and boy, do they know how to build a city. They don't just tear stuff down when it gets old - they refurb it and move on. Most of the buildings are over 100 years old in any given town. The best part though is they way that every town has a high street packed with functional shops. No one is forced to spend all day in a warehouse shop like Walmart, rather, everyone gets the pleasure of walking down a centuries-old downtown going from independent shop to shop. And with the bus system, no one has to worry about owning a car so much.

Here in America, we drive our fat asses from warehouse to warehouse buying in bulk from large, greedy corporations. It makes me want to move back.

Hmmm, so the loop will go over the tunnel? Interesting, I'd have thought they'd extend it along where the road is now in more of a circular fashion.

Yeah though, I kinda hope they get a few of the old AP thematics back in soon. They did a good job a couple of years ago when they got the animatronics back in.

Construction/Rumors / Re: Grandfather's Mansion Re-hab?
« on: September 09, 2007, 03:40:49 PM »
A wild mouse would have been fun, but it wouldn't have worked at all at SDC. Not only are wild mouses bad capacity wise, but it just doesn't fit SDC. SDC is the type of place that has to be really careful not to lose it's charm with silly lower-class attractions. I would like to see the shot tower come back though, but again, it might not work in mid-town.

I still think my midtown re-vamp proposal is the best - see the Tom Sawyer's thread.

It winds around and under the Wildfire overflow queue. I believe they still pump water through it, but I don't know how. I mean, the canal originally went past the whirlpool scene on AP. It must go pretty far back there, I've never been able to see exactly where it starts from Wildfire's lift.

Hmmm, wouldn't it be nice if they re-did some of the old Jim Owen's canal and put a garden/rest area in next to it? That could be a really nice area for when they connect the loop from PK to Wildfire. I know for a fact that many people end up sitting around on Wildfire's deck or around PK's launch section for hours at a time waiting for their kids/loved ones to get done riding - they'd be appreciative of a nicer place to sit.

I wonder if they'll bring back something like the ladder with the re-hab. Probably not, as they have to be so careful now with capacity issues and insurance issues even more so, but I'd like to see Grandpa come back to the mansion in some manner.
