A clean sweep this week, HB:  game, set, and match to you!

62
While I agree broadly, HB, I still believe in the necessity of specific places and dates.  The relationship among the ideas and events is absolutely crucial, but being able to pin them down specifically prevents both misunderstanding and fuzzy thinking.  It is helpful to know not only that an event preceded another but by how much and in what context.  Vagueness in these relationships allows for over-generalization, which is probably the greatest obstacle facing people today, even so-called educated ones.  It leads to the progression fallacy, the idea that somehow humanity has progressed and improved over the course of history, which any historian can easily see is tommyrot.

I also hesitate to push for children making their own decisions.  Should we let them decide, for example, whether or not to play in traffic?  Whether or not to drink poison or engine oil?    Even when shown the hazards of both, some will choose to do so.  We are trying to equip them to make good choices, and some of that equipment comes from allowing them to make some bad ones, but they simply aren't equipped to make them without restraints upon them.  (Alas! the same is all too true of many, many adults!)

"[R]elevant in the current age"?

As soon as I see that phrase, I am out.  SotH is not about the "current age."  It's about an earlier one, and I don't go to places immersed in the current one for enjoyment.

What a shame.

It appears that the spin at the top of the flume has been deleted?  Am I seeing that right?

I don't get all the blue lights, however.

[snip] But the problem plagues all schools, and it all starts at the top with colleges, textbooks, and bloated administrations.[/snip]
[snip]We need to stand against this attempt to ruin America, which is what it is, nothing less.[/snip]

This movement is one of the reasons I re-enact.  The level of ignorance about one of the most important, formative events in US history astounds me, and it is evident in people from childhood through grad school.  I have been asked who won, who the sides were, when it happened, and why so many ACW battles were fought in National Parks.  Yes, really.

Pure ignorance.

More to the point, it's willful ignorance, and this problem lies near the heart of many of our social issues today.  "I only want to know what I *want* to know, not what some teacher thinks I need to know.  I am the arbiter of all things."

This problem is not related to a political ideology in the sense we use politics.  It is related to the ME ideology, the selfishness that is the heart and source of human problems.

Don't let the higher education mavens off the hook:  what passes for college education today is a national tragedy.  I say that as an insider struggling against the system.

Yes, from the art it looks like there is also supposed to be a big pulley with the little building. In person, the thing that stood out the most to me was the actual elevated flume. From the concept art, it looks like there is wooded cladding on it. Hopefully these details didn't get completely cut from the budget.

Makes the tower look sorta like the headhouse over a mine shaft, I suppose.

Surely no one is expecting either sanity or logic in these matters.  It's all up to the lawyers, now.  An entire generation of them will thrive on little else but CoViD-19 cases well into the second half of this century.

Has anyone heard what they are doing with the refil mugs and or the unlimited drink tumblers. As far as I know restaurants have all ceased letting you get drinks in your own cup and I’m curious how SDC is dealing with that.

I looked and I haven't seen anything to address them either. I have some old grandfathered ones that I have used for years which I'm not sure if I will be able to now.

I suspect HFE will take this opportunity to get rid of them forever, which is a goal they have been working toward and now have a perfectly good excuse to complete.

Outrage?  I see no outrage on this thread.  Incredulousness, perhaps.

I expected nothing else, but I had hoped for a little common sense.

73
We talked it over last night.  We're probably going to wait to see how this develops.  We might try a weekday in late June/early July.

Because I was just a little guy back then, I always considered it a drop, too.  I had already spent a LOT of time on the water of the lake, and "dropping" in a boat was disconcerting!

I would *love* to see the guns removed from FM.  The noise is annoying.
