Branson Talk / Re: Ride The Ducks Boat Capsizes in Storm
« on: August 02, 2018, 01:21:06 PM »
Claire McCaskill (never one to let a tragedy go to waste during an election year) has introduced legislation requiring DUKW boats to have higher safety regulations including the removal of all roofs.

How kind of her and forward thinking of her.   ::)
If by some chance she gets re-elected you won’t see her for another 4 years around these parts

Not unless there is another accident with loss of life or injuries....

It would be political suicide to do nothing too.

Wish we could let the experts actually make the regulation changes instead of letting the political head just react because they have to or be labeled as being uncaring by there opponents.

Random Talk / Re: Your Travels Thread (2018)

Visited SFSL for the first time in 20+ years this weekend....took the family to capitalized on my Six Flags passes I bought early this year in Dallas for that family trip.  I've got family in St. Louis and have some fond memories of the park from my younger days when my Uncle would take me and my cousins when I visited the 'big city' in the summers.  But even since I've had a family of my own most of my time in town was always just spent with them.  This past weekend we snuck up there to do some attractions we never seem to have time for.  Got in a Cardinals/Cubs game, city museum, ted drewes, pizza, and the park.

It was great to have cooler weather for this end of summer trip but that also included overcast, rain, and occasional storm was a major factor in all of our activities.  We scheduled a Monday and Tuesday to hit the park....I had a goal to hit all the kid ride and family rides on Monday....hopefully most of the big rides and do a full water park day on Tuesday where I could sneak over and get the bigger rides in.  It rained off and on both monday and tuesday with caused all sorts of havoc on the plans.  With a high of 77 on Monday and rains HH closed around 2 that day with the workers saying they only had 37 people in the park all day....by the time the sun came out and we were thinking about going....they had closed.  Ended up being 5 of about 50 people in the water park on Tuesday until it again closed around 2:30 (this time for storm moving in).  Most of the coaster where closed Tuesday due to nearby lightening and/or heavy rains.  Ended up talking off for home earlier than expected:(

Park Review:  I wasn't expecting much from this park and it just kind of meant my expectations.  I had a few pretty cool moments remembering my childhood while experiencing a few rides.  The mine train is one of my earliest childhood coasters....that drop in the dark was extremely frightening to me and it was fun to relive with my son riding with me.  It was the only coaster I could get him on and he was about my age from when I remembered it.  I rode the ninja....which I never did as a kid....I was scared to death of that think.  It wasn't until I was high school aged that I took on OE at WoF and discovered the fun of loopers.  I liked the Ninja....not as rough as the internet claims it is....I thought it is still fun.  Never got on Screaming Eagle:(  It was barely ever open in the rain.  Rode boomerang, fireball.  My oldest loved Batman...we rode it 3x including a front row....she liked Stl better than the SFoT version.  I thought American Thunder was great....very fun.  Mr. Freeze was running faster than at SFoT!  Then there is the Boss....I hated it.  It beat me up....my daughter hated it too....I could only take one ride.  I completely get the comments about it's roughness now and how it would be a great RMC project.  Even my daughter said...."I thought it was going to be fun like the Texas Giant".  Really hated that Colossus was down:(...another ride I remember riding as a kid.

I left thinking this park really needs a new steel coaster:  A hyper?, a BM Dive? BM floorless? Winged?  It just needs some type of headlining unique steal coaster.  That plus an Iron Boss (:)) would really help put this park on the map as a coaster destination.  Not sure I need to go back until an attraction like that is built.  Hopefully that wouldn't be another 20 years for me.  My wife and kids didn't like the park as much as SFoT....I think we might actually go back there instead of SFSL for a Christmas time visit this year.

Other Parks / Re: Six Flags St. Louis Typhoon Twister closed

I rode it yesterday.  Didn't know about any accidents on it.  They make you weigh in at the top and they put me in the 'downhill' position on the raft with my two preteen daughters.  I felt like I was going to fall out backwards the whole ride.  It never felt unsafe but it was a bit scary for me (I've always been nervous on water slides).  It wouldn't have surprised me that if I lost grip on the handle....I'd probably would have lost my balance and be off the ride (I have terrible balance).  I would have done it again but the park closed early due to storms.

I’m calling it now.  2019 will be a “show year”

So....your saying not to expect anything....lol

Every year is a show year.

I don't expect another major ride or expansion for a few years....hopefully they invest a bit into the classics though.

Branson Talk / Re: America's Fun Park in Branson

I'm guessing they are burning through there operating capital too fast and are betting on the fall months to have better success.  I wonder if they have any halloween type attractions that they plan for or if it's just a hope that the weather will help increase traffic?

The tripadvisor reviews are mostly positive.  A few complaints about rides being down where they responded that they where having maintenance issues.  But the park was responding up to a couple of weeks ago on the reviews.

Not a good start....but I guess there is still some hope to recover.

I was thinking about solutions for safety and wondered if they could make the roof detachable and buoyant.  Just release the roof from the frame (and push it away if possible).  I can't image those vehicles ever being used again without them being open air with life jackets required.

White Water Discussion / Re: White Water Development

I'm guessing White Water has been a cash cow for the HFE....it makes plenty of money without having to keep up with the Jones around the country.  Water parks are not destination attractions beyond the local area.  Since it is tied with SDC....WW will probably always have the advantage over other parks for getting the extra water park money from tourists.....I'm guessing Branson could support 4-5 indoor water parks (in hotels) and 2 major outdoor parks.  I thinking the next generations of Branson visitors are going to prefer water parks over lake days.

An NWA weather guy posted about the weather timeline.....showing that they severe weather warnings for the area was released 30 minutes before the accident:(

A family of 4 from Arkansas lost 2 members.  The Mom didn't go....sister made it but the Dad and brother didn't.  Just heartbreaking :'(

Thoughts and prayers with Branson today :(

I wonder if HFE sold this attraction because they where worried about the liability of an accident like this.  I'm not saying anyone predicted this....but it wouldn't surprise me if they dropped it to prevent the company from getting in trouble because of something like this.

Big respect to the Ripley's CEO for speaking with the media today.  He could have just sent out a press release but he went on live and you could hear how shook up he was.  Took on the hard questions and was very honest in his answers.  Even agreed that the driver should not have took it into the lake.

Horrific thinking about how quickly that could happen.  All of us locals probably understand that the sky can be blue one minute and be horrific crazy just a few minutes later with one of these fast moving midwest storms.  I'll be patiently waiting for the investigation/timeline of how they got themselves in that situation.  It's pretty easy to judge them right now that they should have seen the storm coming.

I can't image Ripley's reopening the tour....if it survives....would be with new owners and a bunch of safety minded changes.  Good luck with the marketing campaign if it does reopen.

I have a friend camping at an RV park offshore....they had a tree go down next to there RV.  Gave them a big scare and they talked about the storm coming from out of the blue.

Shoot, pay me $20 and I'll give you a schedule of how to go about seeing all of the shows and getting on all the rides. ;)

Can you skip lines and guarantee best show seats without having to wait?

Random Talk / Re: What's going on in NWA, 2018

The bike community in NWA is exploding.....and not by accident.  Read an article recently about a Walton grandkid who is an avid cyclist and has always loved to ride around here.....the family has been helping with funding to build out all the trails around the area.  Bentonville has and/or is becoming a "bike resort" town.....like a "ski resort".  Cyclist from around the country are coming to ride the trails.  We'll probably keep getting events like that.

I wouldn't trust the swinger ride....lol

Just booked trip for Vegas for the end of the month.  Allegant deal...staying at Venetian.  Have a food tour booked downtown, a couple of shows, and hoping to ride a ride or two on the strip.
