Construction/Rumors / Re: SDC's 2009/10 Project
« on: December 01, 2008, 10:38:19 PM »
Coaster Con w/o Ozark Wildcat?  And no wooden coaster that was projected/rumored to be built in 2009?  And a big hole that subtracted two rides from the park?  Expectation vs Reality.   I can't honestly say that I've ever felt truly let down by SDC until now.  I feel bad about saying this, I've always felt that SDC is magical.

I have to believe that you need to spend money in order to make money.  SDC has totally over-reacted.  Perhaps, most importantly, SDC has reminded visitors of their screw up by placing a huge hole in the middle of the park

Mike Kelly87- you evil evil man.   8) Ya know. . . you just had the guts to say something that we all should have said.  What is wrong with the SDC business model?
Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't SDC bring in just under 3 million visitors a year?
Doesn't SDC charge rent and/or get a percentage of profit from all of their stores?
Are they selling food for too cheap?  Do they need to charge for parking?  Are they too employee intensive?
Everytime that I was at the park, it was full and it sure seemed that people were spending money.  What is going on?

I have no idea where it could be put, but a trolley could almost work with the Grand Exposition on its own independent circuit.  I was thinking that it could have a Bonnie and Clyde robbery, especially if the train was used for transport.   Several problems,  1.)  where would it go and 2.) Bonnie and Clyde is in the 1920-1930s.  I like the trolley though.

I'm assuming that SDC does not even have a third train...do they?

By last year, I thought that the park was trying to make a legitimate stab at being a family park.  I took my 3 and 4 year old and we had a great time. . . but we went to the sea lion show, the parrot show, the Veggie Tale show, sand pit, water fountains, and legoland.  The rides were okay. . .but they were clearly run down carnival rides.  My kids loved the children's "thrust" tower at Six Flags STL but were to short to ride the CC version.  I liked the smallness for walking around with small children and I liked the scenery.
We did not go this year because there were not shows that would attract my kids and the rides just didn't prove to be reason enough to go.  If someone is only going for rides, than why not go to that little children's park in front of the Tanger Mall.
Do the Hershends own the Grand Village (that Victorian shopping mall across from the Grand Palace.)  If they do, why not move the children's rides to that parking?

I love "small" wooden coaster.  My definition of "small" is a reaction to what is seemingly the coaster's industry definition of "big." My first favorite "small" coaster was Outlaw in Des Moines.  Then, through the late 90s, I rode a lot of the great mega woodies like Texas Giant, Mean Streak, Beast, Rattler, and the Missouri piece of over sized crap- The Boss.  I keep coming back to these smaller coasters that have speeds of 50 MPH, less than 100 feet tall, and a lot of tight corners.

Keep the kids ride?  Why?  Unless things have changed since last year, I thought that the kids rides were terrible.
I hope that you guys who are thinking that the Oz Cat is staying are basing your observation on a strong rumor or fact. You have given me hope!  I rode Evel Keneval(sp) last weekend and was reminded how much I love OC.  I can only hope that Prowler will finish off our trio of supurb smaller woodies in the state.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Another Bad Survey Going Around
« on: October 26, 2008, 12:16:29 AM »
I was at the park today and walked on the Culinary School's back porch for the first time.  I have to say that I was surprised at the awesome  view of the Echo Hollow.  Honestly, I wondered. . .why?  Why would you want such a great view of a venue that just doesn't host that many concerts and isn't that magnificent to look at?  I've heard the rumor/theory on this blog before that Echo Hollow was on its way out, and I became slightly more curious today. . .  especially if the survey is suggesting that new attractions might take the place of old ones.  :-\
By the way, I agree with the idea that if a major ride was to be replaced, Waterboggin who be the correct choice.  But talk about a no win for enthusiast.  There are just not that many water slides left.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: Kids Fest at Silver Dollar City
« on: August 02, 2008, 08:34:04 AM »
Sorry that it's taken me so long to read this and respond:

I have a 1, 4, and 5 year old.  They enjoyed the Kidsfest alot.  We've now gone to the Veggietale show twice.  Both times my kids sat their mesmorized by it.

My thinking is that SDC knows that they can not reinvent thier own thinking thus they must hire out to create new ideas and new shows.  The idea is working- the park is packed- and a park that is set in the 1880s is selling to a new generation.

I'll stop there for fears of OT.  I wish I would have got in on the conversation while it was more appropriate.

I'm surprised at the Echo Hollow suggestion.  Does anyone else think that the last show is terrible?

General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: How Will Gas Prices Affect SDC?
« on: April 24, 2008, 09:54:38 AM »
I live 2 hrs from SDC and it is a little spooky thinking that it costs $50 in gass to get there and back.  I'm a teacher, so we're not rich- but not poor.  $50 is definately something to think about.  We get into the park on season passports.

I was there on Friday also.  It was cold but there were no lines and we got in to the shows that we wanted to see without a problem.  We were only at the park for three hours and saw the two big shows.  To be honset, everyone I have talked to thinks that "Feet of Fire" is not too good.  I felt that the advertisement for the show was very mis-leading.  Perhaps they should have called the show "Island of Fire" and included pictures of people singing in the advertisement.  I would also have liked for them to explain what fire had to do with Ireland.  The show seemed more like a  Irish Talent Show.

General Silver Dollar City Talk / SDC's 50th Anniversary
« on: April 04, 2008, 10:13:32 AM »
I wonder if SDC has flirted with putting in a flat ride or water ride in 2009 and delaying the coaster with a  park expansion until 2010.  Now that someone else has pointed out the upcoming anniversary, I would almost like to see a delay.  I am curious if SDC may have some surprising idea for their 50th. . .something much more interesting than a cliche like a ride.  (If anyone from WOF is reading this. . .gimics are a nice starting point.  SDC is one of the few parks that is better than gimics.)
