General Silver Dollar City Talk / Midnight Madness park music
« on: August 06, 2010, 09:53:29 AM »

There has been a little discussion on this topic but what do you think?
I found walking through SDC to the Ghost Busters theme and 99 luftbaloons just too far out there.
Is SDC trying too hard to cater to a different crowd?  McDonald's tried pizza some years back to expand there business scope, but it flopped, they aren't a pizza place, they sell hamburgers. In the same train of though SDC isn't Six Flags or World of Fun, they are both fine places to visit but these customers are walking into SDC for a reason.

I guess after seeing all of the q's and especially the plunge running to the float trip platform I lost faith. You have to get in the wildfire q to see just how it is wrapping.  and if they were using 2 trains they weren't loading at a normal speed, I didn't ever see evidence of 2 trains.
If there was a way I could call to see how many trains they would be running for the day ext I would. Seems like I have hit crap days the past few trips.
I love to see a crowd but there is no excuse for not being prepaired.

I cant see the side but it looks like 300 or so people.
Maybe 500.
Are they still doing that 50's show?

I think a high energy hour would be great.  It is really hot in that concrete bowl.
How are the crowds to the show anyway?
I don't pay any attention, haven't been since Mike Patrick quit producing it some years back.

I rode the double shot and although it could be a fun addition to an area ( swing/silos) by no means is this a feature ride. LINK : http://www.s-spower.com/download/double.pdf 360-480 Riders per hour.

........................
Wildfires line was running out of the building.
The Plunge was using the old Float trip q as well as the regular q. I gave up at this point   I had a funnel cake my friend had an ice cream cone and we left. When I left there were 2 trams in action, the return trip to the car took a while but not terrible.
Thoughts..
The food/ drink discounts were nice, but the rides alone do not absorb the crowds at all, especially when they are running them under capacity. Frankly had I paid I would have not been pleased.
I walked around and ate and drank and rode nothing, they lines were outlandish, haven't seen them like that at Christmas.
I thought it was surreal that I was walking through SDC listening to 99Luftbaloons playing on the sound system.
It wasn't a good surreal.
Lets face it, if you put the  Its a small world theme song on the Haunted Mansion do you think the ride would be as effective, that nowone would think something wasn't right?
You just cant get away with 80's rock at SDC, it doesn't work at all, its wrong, like the pig people on the twilight zone episode its not natural and it doesn't fit.  The crowds were way more than those rides can absorb.  I think it is just as the name implies " Madness".
I Will wait to visit on a regular day with bluegrass playing and the shop open. It just wasn't fulfilling.

Thursday 10:18 PM  Just back from Midnight Madness.
I drove 1.5 hours to SDC tonight to see what Midnight Madness was all about.
I spoke with a employee at a ride tonight and they gave me the number of people to be 12000.
Arrived at 6:00. found a parking spot at stop 4, all lots with the exception of stop 6 were used.
They had 1 tram running at 6. Wait for the tram about 13 min.
Used my coupon for 15 admittance on a stranger I thought looked like they needed to save some money ( they didn't know what to say when I offered)
Walked in to the square with the Ghost Busters theme playing.
The place was swarming, I walked down to Thunderation, Line was up the zig zag ( kept on walking). Down to try a tater twist and on to the GE, I am thinking a David Bowie tune was playing at the time, rides in the GE were loaded up. Moved on.  The Lost river area was full as well with a fair crowd at the River BBQ, I had a ft long sausage with 1 side for 7.99, I thought this was a good deal we split it. Walked up to the great swing, the line is coming out of the q into the walkway, 1 arm in action. Moved on.   Fire in the hole lines well to .75 of Q.
Powder Keg, line through the ride out to the entrance with an hour wait 1 car being used.
Stopped an employee and asked what the deal was they said "12000 here with no shops open what do you think is happening? They are trying to run a Six Flags over Branson"
Cont next post.

I have to voice that I think heading west is an over rated show.
Honestly I felt that For the GLory was  much better.
What are your thoughts?

I do think that the loss of that feature took away more than a scene.
The perception was that we were going down a much larger hill because we had just been presented with a view over a " cliff".  This instinctively made you think you were high up and were really going to drop far this time.
Excitement from teh middle drop was lost.
Removing that was a huge mistake, I wonder how the capacity of the ride did increase by removing that section of track. 10 people per hour?

I am seeing in the trip reports that FITH and Powder Keg seem to be closing alot.
We havent been having bad weather.
Anyone have any ideas?

In Dollywood they built large planters out of wood planks, ( or that was covering the real container).
 THey grew trees in them.
What about concrete planters boarded up, not the little planters like they have between the old and new lots but every 20 ft a big one with 1 tree, a bradford pear would be fine.  It would "soften the blow" of the asphalt.
This is not a million dollar fix here. There are farm tanks that would do the trick nicely. They sell them at the farm store here for 200-500 each. SDC could buy something like that wholesale and cover the tank with wood or rocks, plant a tree and put some vines in so they droop over the edge.
That would really help to beautify the area, you are taking away you better give something back.
