SDC Memories/ Park History / Re: I just got a package in the mail
« on: October 24, 2011, 07:08:15 PM »
I know what you mean about wishing you had kept stuff. I've lived near SDC my whole life and as kids in the 70's and 80's my brother and I used to have the old style popping cork guns, old train engineer hats, old mugs and all sorts of toys and t-shirts. All gone. Makes me so sad. I have already told my mother that this winter I'm going to spend a weekend at her house digging through her huge cedar chest of unsorted, loose photographs in an effort to find some old SDC shots.

And thanks for the info Junior. That's probably where it came from. I'm gonna keep searching to see if I can find exact info and now I've got some good background info to go off of.

SDC Memories/ Park History / I just got a package in the mail
« on: October 22, 2011, 02:09:12 PM »
Today I was surprised with a package of some Silver Dollar City goodies in the mail. They came from someone with a connection to the park and everything was acquired legitimately. I got 2 of the 50th anniversary Coke bottles, a 50th anniversary coffee cup, an SDC pig, and then there were some Christmas ornaments:  2 of the "Celebrating Our First All City Christmas" from 2003, 1 of the Silver Dollar City Saloon celebrating the 30th anniversary from OTC 2003, 1 of Brown's Candy Factory from OTC 2004, 1 of Carrie's Candles from OTC 2007, 1 of the Culinary and Craft School's Inaugural Season from OTC 2008 and 1 of the Lost Rivers of the Ozarks from OTC 2009.

But the coolest item in the box is the single piece pictured below. That is a metal ashtray and unfortunately, the person who sent it to me knows no information on it. It appears to be old, the back of it says "made in japan" but I cannot find any date stamped anywhere on it. You can see that the inside part of it says "Marvel Cave" at the top and "Old Mill Park" at the bottom. On the left side of the outer rim there is an engraving of a stage coach and it says "stage coach" above it. On the right side of the outer rim is an engraving of a wagon that says "wagon" above it. Does anyone know anything about this ashtray or have any idea how I could find out more about it? I have tried googling it a tiny bit, I will continue doing that, but I thought I'd ask the experts here on this board too.

I love how they incorporated the shape of a deputy star into the design.

I am planning on being there Sunday. Gonna try to talk my sister and her teenagers into going with me. Being single and without children at my age means you either do a lot of things alone, or you don't do them at all. And while I have gone to SDC alone a few times it's just not as fun as when I have someone with me to talk excitedly about all the things I love so much about the place. But I plan on being there Sunday even if I do have to go alone again.

I have a few pictures of Terry in his various characters at SDC. I'm guessing it will be okay if I post them here? Or would that ruin the fun of trying to find him on your own?

I am not sure if this was the best place to post these, but here's my pictures from my December 4th trip. There are pictures of A Christmas Carol in here. http://www.flickr.com/photos/roseykrh/sets/72157623523178877/

While surfing the net for some history on Springfield, MO I came across a collection of 35mm pictures scanned into MSU's digital collection archive website. Mixed in with everything else are some SDC pics. I linked them all instead of just posting the pics here because I didn't want to rip them off. I respect this site and that they preserve these types of things.

Here's the link to all pictures in the collection - http://digitalcollections.missouristate.edu/cdm4/browse.php?CISOROOT=/Rafferty&CISOSTART=1,1

What is your favorite craft-related shop? Carrie's Candles and the Candy Factory

Least favorite?  the TinType Shop (mainly because it makes me sad it's no longer the bookstore).

What is your favorite park (overall) merchandise shop? hard to choose, I love almost all of them

Least favorite?  the current version of the White River Mercantile. No one goes to SDC to buy fancy clothes.

What is your favorite ride (specifically) merchandise shop? the one across from the Saloon show, I believe it's PK. I love the rocks. I'm a rock hound.

Least favorite?  none

What shops would you omit if you were in charge?  I don't think I'd omit any of them, but I'd certainly like to change the merchandise in the White River Mercantile.

What shops would you add if you were in charge?  Bookstore!!!!

I know this isn't really the correct forum for this thread, but I couldn't find a forum for Herschend's in the news. Maybe it would be a good idea to start one just to post newspaper articles or tv news links?

Anyway, this was in the Springfield NewsLeader today about the two Hungarian students who died after a Ride the Ducks accident in the Delaware River last month.

I didn't hear this myself, but a relative of mine used to work in the White River Mercantile and one day a guest approached her in the store and asked her where the cave had been moved to.

When I was a teenager I talked my parents into going to Worlds of Fun in KC. They grumbled the whole 4 hour drive up there and Dad really grumbled when he paid so much money to get us all into the park. We went through the entrance gates and I remember pointing to one of the big roller coasters I could see sticking up. I remember it being cloudy and windy, but there was no rain. Anyhow we headed towards the coaster and seriously 30 steps into the park the tornado sirens went off and they started making announcements over the loudspeakers that the park is being evacuated and closed. So we hadn't even been there 3 minutes and were rushed back out to our cars and asked to leave. No refunds or rain-checks. Needless to say, we didn't go back.

The mug I use is only 2 years old because even though I grew up going to the park, I never began appreciating it until the past couple of years. So I never saved any of my old ones. But I did go with a friend a few weeks ago who had a mug that was several years older than mine and had a different price listed on the side. But when we both stopped and got frozen lemonade, they charged us both the same higher price that was on my mug. Not sure if that's the norm, or if the guy just wasn't paying attention.

Oh sorry. I didn't mean to imply the Herschends aren't involved in decision making, I was basically just meaning the original people who started in charge are no longer in the same leadership roles. Or something. Whatever I meant.  :)
