SDC Memories/ Park History / I just got a package in the mail
« on: October 22, 2011, 02:09:12 PM »
Today I was surprised with a package of some Silver Dollar City goodies in the mail. They came from someone with a connection to the park and everything was acquired legitimately. I got 2 of the 50th anniversary Coke bottles, a 50th anniversary coffee cup, an SDC pig, and then there were some Christmas ornaments:  2 of the "Celebrating Our First All City Christmas" from 2003, 1 of the Silver Dollar City Saloon celebrating the 30th anniversary from OTC 2003, 1 of Brown's Candy Factory from OTC 2004, 1 of Carrie's Candles from OTC 2007, 1 of the Culinary and Craft School's Inaugural Season from OTC 2008 and 1 of the Lost Rivers of the Ozarks from OTC 2009.

But the coolest item in the box is the single piece pictured below. That is a metal ashtray and unfortunately, the person who sent it to me knows no information on it. It appears to be old, the back of it says "made in japan" but I cannot find any date stamped anywhere on it. You can see that the inside part of it says "Marvel Cave" at the top and "Old Mill Park" at the bottom. On the left side of the outer rim there is an engraving of a stage coach and it says "stage coach" above it. On the right side of the outer rim is an engraving of a wagon that says "wagon" above it. Does anyone know anything about this ashtray or have any idea how I could find out more about it? I have tried googling it a tiny bit, I will continue doing that, but I thought I'd ask the experts here on this board too.

I love how they incorporated the shape of a deputy star into the design.

I know this isn't really the correct forum for this thread, but I couldn't find a forum for Herschend's in the news. Maybe it would be a good idea to start one just to post newspaper articles or tv news links?

Anyway, this was in the Springfield NewsLeader today about the two Hungarian students who died after a Ride the Ducks accident in the Delaware River last month.

For the past 6 or 7 years I've developed a tradition of entering the park and heading straight to Brown's Candy Factory to get a chocolate-covered strawberry, which I eat on the benches outside of the shop. Then I backtrack back to the square and begin my SDC day. I can't remember how this routine got started, but it's one that I definitely enjoy continuing to do. And when there are no strawberries (due to wrong season or large crowds) then I just get something else chocolate-covered.

My mom always has to have a funnel cake everytime she goes. I always have to taste test the pork rinds (and usually buy a bag). My brother visits the leather shop every single time. My sister-in-law always steps into Wilderness Church. What do you guys do every single time you're there?

Random Talk / Your opinion on taking pictures
« on: February 19, 2010, 10:46:26 AM »
I am curious to see what everyone's opinion is on this:

Is it rude / annoying / weird to take pictures in public places such as restaurants, bowling alley's, the Saloon Show at SDC, etc.? There are a lot of places where I want to take pictures that I feel like I shouldn't just because it's not a normal picture taking place. I have no trouble taking pics of people or crowds who are outside in front of a building or something. Maybe it's the flash that's the difference? When you take a pic outside generally no one notices.

Do you guys take pics in these types of places? Does it bother you if other people do?
