General Silver Dollar City Talk / Re: 2011 Trip Reviews
« on: July 09, 2011, 10:05:12 AM »
I'll keep this short. We arrived at the park last Friday at 3:00, had a blast, rode a few rides with my daughter. I rode Fire In The Hole for the first time in thirty years! Fun. Came back the next day at opening, stayed all day. Boy, was it hot!! So hot that the blacktop was bubbling up!! We paced ourselves, riding for a while, shopping for a while. We went to see the dog show, it was great! The only bad experience we had was at the Lucky Sliver Mine Restaraunt, and it had nothing to do with the food or employees. Some kid was actually picking up pieces of chicken in the buffet line, tasting them THEN PUTTING THEM BACK!!! His Mother seemed ok with this, but it obviously grossed us out completely.
After we lost our appetites, it was back to fun time. We spent a lot of time in the woodcarving area. That's something I'd really love to get into. We bought just a few souvenirs this time. All in all, it was another wonderful trip.
One side note: We ran into the undertaker (Mr. M. Balmer) again. This man is a HOOT! Whatever he is being paid isn't enough. We saw him as another (speaking) character earlier in the day and he was the most talkative, upbeat, fun person I've met in a while. What a joy it was to run into him again and get my daughter's picture with him.

hi tony!  where r u staying next week?
Hey! We are staying at the Best Western not far from the park. It'll be a quick trip this time, but we REALLY need to get away, and I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be.

Hey all! It's been forever for me too. Bringing the Fam to SDC next Thursday/Friday. I've missed everyone. Lots to tell. I hope everyone is well.

I too have been gone a while. Mostly just busy trying to figure out how to pay bills. Has anyone else noticed how unbelievably expensive it is to live these days? Anyway, I've missed everyone too and hope to check back in from time to time.

Here's one I bet you guys haven't heard of: Dougie MacLean from Scotland. He's an awesome songwriter. Check him out on Amazon. I think his best album is "Craigie Dhu" from his early work. Best song: "Caledonia". Check him out, it is well worth your time. That is all. As you were.

Swoosh-You are correct, sir. I was mostly commenting on my inability to ride roller coasters more than anything. It was an exhilerating (and slightly jerky) ride. It turns out I'm just not a roller coaster guy. I'm glad I rode it though, even if it was backwards. We had a huge wooden roller coaster here in Tulsa since the sixties called the "Zingo". I regret that I never rode it, and now thanks to our idiotic and greedy city council, it has been torn down. I'm trying to live in the moment more now, even if it hurts a little sometimes.  ;)

Three years ago, we were there first thing in the morning. We decided to ride Thunderation FIRST. Why, I don't know, as I don't tolerate fast, spinny rides very well, if you know what I mean. We got in line to ride it backwards (by accident), but I thought "Oh well, lets live a little. How bad could it be?". It was VERY bad. Jerky doesn't describe it. Riding it backwards was much worse because obviously you can't see what turn or drop is coming up next. We survived, and were glad to say we did it, but MAN, did my neck hurt for days. I think its a great ride, but everyone should ride at their discretion. For example, I probably won't be riding it again, but glad to say we did.

Well Maddie, we are probably waiting till sometime in early October. I'd like to see the park in the fall. I've never been there any other time than the middle of Summer.

Just to illustrate how important the theming and street characters are to me, we were fortunate enough to have been wandering by the big coffin against the red barn right when "Mr. M. Balmer" (the undertaker) was there posing for pictures with some kids. My daughter thought he was funny, and I thought his antics were hilarious. He gave us his "business card" as a souvenir, and was silently on his way. Moments and people like him are what true memories are made of. It is the most important thing to keep the traditional themes and characters in place.

Well, here's my two cents: SDC is an 1880's THEME park, with the THEME being 1880's pioneering and crafts. Nothing fits that THEME more than good ol' bluegrass music and there's no shortage of good bluegrass to choose from. If the suits want to try something new, I guess it's better to try new things at an after hours special event than during regular business hours. If I drove all the way there, paid admission, then heard the "Black Eyed Peas" softly blaring in the woods, I'd have to head straight for the corporate offices. SDC is what it is because it has remained true to it's roots for so long. In my Grandpas words: "Dance with the one that brung ya".

Andy, if there's one thing I've learned over the years, its that things are ALWAYS better just around the bend. Take care and talk to you soon.

That show was fun indeed. We saw an episode in our hotel room in Branson just a few weeks ago that featured "Miss Kitty" from Gunsmoke. I didn't even know she could sing. I loved those old sets and backgrounds from that show. Simpler times.

That's cool, Rube. Anytime you feel like making a little demo and coming to Tulsa, I have a pretty nice little home studio upstairs. Best of all, it's free! Open invitation, too.
