Title: SDCFans Teachers
Post by: StaceySue on August 03, 2009, 11:28:27 PM
I know several of us are teachers.  I went into my classroom today to get started since I never seem to have enough time during inservice.  I plan to go back tomorrow, and then I hope I'll be able to stay away until next week.  Our inservice is Aug. 13-14.  School starts for the kids on Aug. 17.

I can't believe it's time already!  I'm excited as a teacher can only be at the beginning of the school year.  Everything is so full of hope and promise.

This year, I will only teach two weeks or so, and then I'll go on maternity leave.

This may sound crazy, but we hope to take a day trip to SDC before my maternity leave is up in Oct.  Then, we've booked our Nov. weekend trip already for Christmas.   Time seems to be flying by.

So, teachers, I hope you have an awesome year!

Well as the resident band director, you probably already know that we really never have a summer break, we just sort of put things on hold long enough to run away from town for a week or two of "anything but band" related stuff.

We have our in-service 17-18 and get kids on the 19th.  This year will be interesting as we are going from a 7 period day to an 8 period day.  That will shave some time off each hour in order to accomodate that last period.  We'll see how that works.

Have a busy fall ahead of us with 7 marching competitions spread out in September and October... and when we're not tied up with that we'll be at Faurot Field on home game days to cheer on the Tigers.

Never really ready to go back, but might as well get it over with so I can get back on a routine... before we know it will be Christmas break anyway.

I'm not a teacher, but I'm starting back to college the end of August after a three-school-year absence.... I'm kinda nervous, to be honest, which my friends and family would never believe. I'm one of those quiet, get-all-A's kinda students, but after being out of school for so long, I'm really nervous about getting back into the groove of things...

Good luck on the teachers' end; I know it can be rough. I've been close friends with a good number of my teachers, and it's amazing the trials and tribulations they live through just to be able to pass knowledge on to the next generation. I commend thee!

Swoosh-  I really respect teachers who spend so much of the summer working.  I am friends with one of our FFA teachers, and that poor girl spends so much of her time on her job.  God bless ya!

Our speech season starts at the end of October, and we'll do the school play this year in December instead of November.  My summers are pretty much my own, though.

We kicked around the idea of adding another period to the day, but it's not going to happen this year.

Joy-- You'll do fine in school!  I'm pretty quiet myself, and when I first started teaching, I really had to pretend to be this outgoing person.  I'm working on my Master's one night per week, and I am still pretty quiet in my classes.  I really only speak when I feel I have something to contribute.

I'm just thankful I don't have any more science or math classes to do. From here on out, it's all classes I am actually interested in. I'm still shocked that I aced my Public Speech class... Didn't see *that* one coming...

At least the majority of the classes have to do with writing, so that's a very "quiet-person" type thing.

Ugghhh, don't mention the "S" word. I was there yesterday prepping the cafe for murals, and I have to report THURSDAY...yes this thursday Aug 6 for our first meeting day. Monday we have kiddos in! On the bright side we have a week long break in Oct. kinda like a Spring break in the fall so I can get a last push of SDC during the Crafts Festival time of year. This will be what amounts to year 7 for me so I am excited to see what is in store for it! Day 1 though I will be thinking " man I wish I was at SDC" wait that is everyday.

Ready?  Who's ever ready?  June-July-August has become just June-July.  I spend my entire summer (every year for 20 years now) planning and revamping my class.  Our new teachers come back Thursday (in two days), and we greet them for the first five days.  Then, next Thursday, get my laptop replaced!  I always look forward to the first days and new beginnings, but I'm never quite are ready as I'd like to be.  Our Open House is Monday, the 17th and the first day back is Wednesday, the 19th.

My daughter begins kindergarten on the same day (different district), and I'm happy to report that she is more than ready!

IDK, I guess I will grin and bear it when it gets here.  Yuck.

This has been the roughest start to a school year that I've had in my 20 years in the profession.  Is anyone else fed up with the "trickle down" mandates in your district and in the state?  It seems like they keep whittling away at every free minute in the day - times when we traditionally plan, grade, record, and work with individual students.  Now I feel as if I can no longer effectively do my job.  I've never seen the pendulum swing this far.

Uggghhhh...We have been back in for officially 2 full weeks, and since then I have been told I have 3 MORE mandatory district assessments 2 formative, one summative per course (logged in and charted for AYP (Annual Yearly Progress for NCLB(No Child Left Behind)) purposes) and then our building just today told us about 4 more assessments building wide to chart our AYP in house. All entered through our computer system. Now figure this along with that I teach 6 subjects a day to Middle School students, and that amounts to YEP=23 Mandatory tests, not counting the chapter exams, pop quizzes, unit exams, finals, MAP testing. I hear ya' HB, I hear ya' you're preachin' to the choir on this un'. We are drowning and they are throwing us bricks. This just makes my SDC weekends a bit sweeter in the Fall and Spring!

IDK about you guys but when I get home I collapse on the sofa in exhaustion.  I am completely zapped and it has never been this way before.  We switched to 8 hour days this year and it is taking its toll on me.  I'm also sick of fighting with Lumen, our online grading system.  It has more bugs then it is worth.  Oh and on top of everything else that I have to do as Director of Bands, this is our year for MSIP review -- that will be loads of fun.  Our administration is already getting worked up on that -- not sure why, we've met AYP the last three years in a row so it will probably just be a "text book" review as opposed to a full one.  Whatever.

Oh is anyone else having their district adopt the "PBS" system for discipline?  Sounds like a bunch of crock to me.  There is no way it would work in band - band is way too miliatry-esque for a "positive behavior system"   ::)

Personally, I will be happy when this first full week of school is over.

Just finished my first 4 days back in 6th Grade.  It was a pretty awesome week.. The students still are very reserved and quiet.  It would be nice to liven them up just a little.

PBS was an interesting discipline/behavior management system... it didn't seem to work well with the older students but in the elementary it worked great.

I'm busy rewriting my curriculum.  I didn't really like the textbook for reading so .. basically i'm working out of lit-sets and I think it's going to keep me pretty busy planning.

Yes, it seems PBS is the latest thing to hit the fan and come splattering back to hit us in the faces.  They seem to be saying that if a child is misbehaving, it must be my fault, and I repent, bow to the kid, apologize, and take him to the park for cotton candy.  That should fix his behavior, right?

I'm telling you, a couple of nights ago, I just wanted to get in my truck and drive fast - and hit things on the way home.  I refuse to let my family and my church life suffer because of this nonsense.  Extra hours, more meetings, mandated assessments, red tape, daily schedule changes, and PBS - which one will be the the straw that breaks this camel's back?

It is nice (in some perverted way) that we're all dying together.

MMMM PBS!!!! we are in year #3 of that. Needless to say I am in the same boat as you all. I had to paint PBS words around the building this summer, and well it is running our schools behavior plans/ referrals. For some students it is good, but the older kids think it is a bit elementary, and too warm and fuzzy for them, so they reap the benefits of not getting into trouble when they do something stupid. And believe me, they do stupid things, then claim that they need a reward for their good behaviors to deter them from doing negative things. They are all still doing the same stuff they were when we were on board with Character Education, and whatever others we have had in the past 10 years here. It will...like everything else...pass with the entrance of another education guru philosophy, and heck that'd be great to start a movement like that, get rich off of it, and sell it to all the schools through conferences/training/text/workshops etc. even it it does or doesn't work!
Title: Re: SDC Fans Teachers--Who's Ready to Go Back to School?!!
Post by: Swoosh on August 29, 2009, 12:46:44 AM
Well I'm definitely not helping the "movement" at all at our district because anytime PBS is mentioned I always make the accronymn mean something different, by saying oh you mean (Peanut Butter Sandwich, Public Broadcasting Service, Pure Bull S#!T, etc.)

This is our "planning" year and I guess we're going to "implement" next year.  Whatever.  We did the Character Ed a couple of years ago and it feel flat within a month.  This too will pass I'm sure without much fanfare.  It just won't work in Band, you can't try to implement "warm fuzzies" on something as military-esque as band.

Sort of changing topics, but is it true they did away with the STARR program?  We haven't had one of those "teachers" visit our school in a couple years now because the last one to visit our school got laughed at because her "ideas" was so lucrative.

You may enjoy this, Swoosh:  at our first PBS "collaboration" meeting, a guy came to tell us how bad he was in elementary school.  In middle school, he was allowed to break the rules and be in both band and orchestra.  That, he claimed, is what turned his life around and allowed him to be successful.

My biggest concern is that I, too, am unique.  Why am I not professionally being allowed to use my own personality in my classroom?  Why must I conform to someone else's ideas of what works for them?  In my opinion, consensus forces mediocrity, and the best ideas - the ones that have worked for me - are lost.  I was a contender for Missouri's Teacher of the Year a few years ago and have won many awards for doing my job, and yet I feel like I'm starting over.

Wow, we have some award weiners here on this here board... I was Teacher of the Year in my district last year.  ;D (won multiple media awards from MSTA as well, but that's another story).

Maybe I'm too "old school" but I feel when a kid misbehaves, he needs to have his butt swatted by the principal if he is a repeat offender.  It worked when we were in school why are their precious egos so much more fragile now then when we were in school?

If you think teaching school is tough on this generation you should try having them work for you.  Now the corp leaders have human resources (term used for people who can't really do anything so they try and tell you how it should be) to give credit to all the clowns who can't and will not do their jobs.  A server can drop the F-bomb in the dinning room in front of guest and still not be fired for this.  They can be late, not do their job, not dress to standards, and take three smoke breaks in four hours and still not lose their jobs unless you have paper trails.  If you want to talk extra work you should try being upper management in todays corp world.  To quote a answer to how much more are they going to ask "You still have a job don't you?"  That is after six days a week 11-13 hours a day.

Can't wait for the late fall, Indian Point, and SDC.

I, firstly, am blessed to have a job in today's economy. Let alone one that I went to school specifically for. I love what I do, and I wouldn't trade it (except for my SDC dream job!). I have a hard time doing what I am supposed to do, like many others in the lack of accountability on the students behalf. Merit pay, PBS, AYP, MAP, all say whether we are doing our jobs for the students, making steps to meet their needs albeit in a "Stepford Wives" sort of way. What happened to the students doing their job LEARNING? I do everything I can to make the education individualized, and differentiated enough to reach ANY student, and when they do not reach out to take what I have crafted specifically for them, how am I to blame? as far as NoChildLeftBehind I will post a short item from an anonymous author , but it explains for teachers and non-teachers the "tip" of our iceberg.

The Football Metaphor for No Child Left Behind

    1. All teams must make the state playoffs and all MUST win the championship. If a team does not win the championship, they will be on probation until they are the champions, and coaches will be held accountable. If after two years they have not won the championship their footballs and equipment will be taken away UNTIL they do win the championship. If a team does not improve after four years, the entire staff may be fired. If the team does not win after the fifth year, the team may be sold to a private corporation. Think ENRON for football.

    2. All kids will be expected to have the same football skills at the same time, even if they do not have the same conditions or opportunities to practice on their own. NO exceptions will be made for lack of interest in football, a desire to perform athletically, or genetic abilities or disabilities of themselves or their parents. All kids will play football at a proficient level, even those in wheelchairs.

    3. Talented players will be asked to workout on their own, without instruction. This is because the coaches will be using all their instructional time with the athletes who aren't interested in football, have limited athletic ability or whose parents don't like football.

    4. Games will be played year round, but statistics will only be kept in the 4th, 8th, and 11th game. Football teams must use their own resources to pay for the statistics.

This will create a New Age of Sports where every team is expected to have the same level of talent and all teams will reach the same challenging goals, rendering the challenge meaningless. If every team meets the challenge, it obviously can't be challenging. If football fans do not like this new law, they are encouraged to vote for vouchers and support private teams that can screen out the non-athletes and prevent their children from having to play with bad football players, ultimately leaving the bad football players behind.

As much as I need a snow day, my curriculum cannot handle another missed day. Between assemblies, and concert rehearsals, and other H1N1 factors, my classes are ALL a bit behind, and I will be utilizing every last second of the next 9 days fitting in District and building assessments. But man...when the 23rd rolls around will I be happy! Thankfully I get to make it down to the park next weekend (fingers crossed) and then again after Christmas for some much needed and overdue R&R. Maybe I might be able to find time and energy to do some gift shopping before Christmas (I am so worn out after my long days at school that I have bought 0 things so far :-\)

We're out the 18th, too.  We've already had a Christmas visit to SDC, but I was hoping to go again.  It looks like it won't happen this year.  I know I should be grateful that I went once--lol.

We went shopping tonight for gifts.  We hadn't bought anything yet.  I'm barely keeping my eyes open, and it's only 7:37!  I am going to bed early.  We have a speech tournament tomorrow.

But then, only five days left!  Bring on the last minute due dates and finals!  I'm ready!!

2 half days - man, do it in 1 and get it over with.

Five more days here.  We can do it!  We even have the Christmas program, this year, and I've scored the role of Santa - singing and dancing and the whole nine yards.  We're thinking we should take our 100 fourth graders on the road.  Think there's a theater in Branson for us?

Half days allow for 3 finals one day, time to go home and "study" and 3 finals the following day. Besides as long as we are in school until 11:40am it counts as a full day. They have always done this, even back to when I went to school there. Seems to work for them!

2 years ago I had to decorate a garbage dumpster to look like a sleigh in order for our fearless principal to have a mode of transportation for the reindeer(teachers wearing antlers) as he enetered the gym playing Santa for our assembly. It was decked out with icicles, presents, the works!!! All made from roll paper for bulliten boards. then when it was over, all that was needed was to flip the paper into the actual dumpster, and ta da! clean up is done! I totally understand where you are coming from Nice Job!

Nope.  Went to Eureka Springs for the weekend, got sick and puked my way back home on Sunday.  Feeling much better now, thank you very much.  Daughter had to go to school yesterday and today, so it feels like break just started.  Now waiting for the snow to start in a couple of days.

I think that I am so overly busy because I am the only off -- wife gets off Wednesday (she works at a medical school) so I got to finish Christmas shopping and then had to laundry and what-not... then on top of that I had to get the house prepped for the painters to come in as they are repainting and repairing sheet rock while we are gone to the Bahamas, which I am also getting finalized and stuff -- yeah busy.

I have been busy!  I'm still grading papers--ahh!  I hadn't cleaned my house since Thanksgiving, and I hadn't bought a single present.  But after today, those two things are pretty much accomplished.  I baked an apple pie and made candied apples and peanut butter cookies today, too.  I also squeezed in a haircut. We teachers must do what we can on breaks.

But I still have loads of papers to grade, not counting this theme park project I had the kids do that was due the last day of class.  Now I have to go to school and grade the things--what was I thinking?  Luckily, my grades aren't due until Jan. 6.

Grades are in.  It took most of the day yesterday to fill in all the plusses and checkmarks for individual skills.  I had to go to the school to pick up my extra credit records before the family got together for a New Year dinner out.

Now it's back to the grind, with meetings all day Monday and the kids returning on Tuesday.  I'm praying for enough snow tomorrow that we will have a snow day on our meeting day.  That would be so awesome!!!

I'm still working on my grades, but they aren't due until Wed.  In fact, I'm still grading my theme park projects--Ahh!I wish we had meetings Monday.  We never have inservice after break anymore.  We just jump right back into things.  Oh well.

Yeah, we jump right back into the fire on Monday.  Still trying to decide the level "intensity" I want to do.  I hate being the only teacher (most of the time) that feels the need to actually push my students to get back in gear and back into the swing of things as soon as we get back from and extended break.  Shoot I know some teachers in my district that will just "coast" all week and might actually start teaching the following week.

Shoot I have pepband on Thursday and the following week the winterguard and the drumline go on tour.

We are back tomorrow, but that means 1/2 day meetings, chili cook off for lunch, and then 1/2 day to enter grades (of which I have already done). No young'ns until Tuesday. I began reading Teach like your hair is on fire http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0143112864/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0670038156&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1NKDD2YMHMAFZPCYVYZ9 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0143112864/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0670038156&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1NKDD2YMHMAFZPCYVYZ9) and it has made me want to step up to try so much more in my classroom. I felt before like I already did so much. The break was short, 2 weeks, but it was enough for me to re-set a bit, and begin to look ahead for Semester 2 goals. I got maybe 2 of the items on my "things I want to do but keep putting off list" but that's okay, I will get to them! Good luck to all who are back in the trenches!

11 hours left of break, I am going to make it the best 11 hours of this year! Hopefully I will dream about SDC-those are always the best dreams, but it makes going to work that much harder!

The "powers that be" made the wonderful choice of making this first week back of school to still count as the 2nd quarter.  I have no idea why, it's never been done this way before, but talk about strange.  So here I was with my JH Music Appreciation class all finalized and wrapped up before break and I get the rude reality slap in the face over break realizing I have these kids for yet another week.... time to pull out a musical I guess.

So by the time I have these kids whipped back into shape at the end of the week, I get a new set the following week who will need to be whipped into shape.  Oh joy. *groan*

^Oooo, I like the sound of that!!!

We had to have our little meetings - which were packed full of those wonderful ice breakers.  We just love getting paid to play hokey little games.  The cuter the games, the more "the kids love them", the more we seem to want to waste the taxpayers' money doing them ourselves.  We're adults!  And we dance around like five-year-olds.

Most of the schools around us were out for snow, today (like StacySue), but since we didn't have to run bus routes on our meeting day, the teachers still had to slip and slide to work.

Anyway, happy second semester everyone.  "It's a long way up when you're comin' from nowhere..."

Nice website!!  My daughter is in 5th grade and she plays the trumpet.  This is the first year that they offer band in our school district.

She seems to really enjoy it.  I was really sceptical because she did not even know how to read music but the music teacher told me not to worry that she would learn and she has to  my amazement.

I do hope your weather gets better soon so far we have had only one day off because of the sub zero wind and slick roads.

Thanks for the compliment on the website.

We start "band" in 4th grade, but we use recorders instead of actual instruments.
They start "instrumental band" in 5th grade.
We then have 5th, 6th, JH and HS bands.
Then outside of that we have a traveling drumline and colorguard team that competes.

No wonder I'm so tired all the time.  :) lol

I'll be finished with my Master's in May from William Woods.  My professors say they are developing a doctorate program. In case you're not familiar, William Woods has an accelerated program that meets in many towns/cities across MO.  You attend one class at a time for six weeks, and then the class changes.  The program is really structured, yet I couldn't have done it any other way at this time of my life.  It's not easy, but it makes the degree a possibility for me.

Of course, my degree is in curriculum, not my content.  Also, I have no idea how the doctorate program would be.  I can't even entertain the possibility for many, many years--lol.

Lumen is one the worst online grading programs I have EVER had to use.  I cannot remember the name of the one I used when I did my student teaching, but it was a lot easier and user-friendly then this thing.

Not to mention it doesn't want to load have the time and you HAVE to use Firefox if you want it to load correctly. It's not worth the hassle most of the time.

I LOVE getting a call at 5:30am to tell me that I get to sleep in that day. Wait, what?  ???

I find it humorous that of the 9 schools in our conference, only us and one other school have yet to call of school.  I also find it funny that we're supposed to be in a basketball tournament this week at a local school and so far no games have been played nor will they until Wednesday as that school called off again.

Makes if a little difficult to do scheduling as my Drumline is supposed to go do an exhibition performance at the tournament some time... it was supposed to be tomorrow night, but those games are now Thursday? I think.

We have school today, but we're getting out early for "teacher in-service" -- so far this week we've been in session for 2 half days.  Man when we get to our first "full day" it is really going to hurt -- BUT we have a 3-day weekend coming up so. HOORAY!

SNOW DAY #6 for us  ;D

We got 10" or more of snow dumped on us in a 24hr period.  Still diggin' out from it.
I would imagine we'll have school tomorrow but it will all depend on how the back roads are... we might have to go hard surfaces only -- oh wait we don't have hard surfaces in most of the district, that might make things interesting. :D

Our elementary has year round school anyway. If you are not familiar with that they have cycle breaks-9 weeks on-3 weeks off for 4 "cycles" and that's a full year. They get the holiday breaks etc. so snow days aren't a big deal at our elem. ages.

We've YET to have a full week of school since Christmas Break with snow days, teacher in-service early outs and planned off days.  I swear the first we we have a "FULL WEEK" without any interruptions and what-not is going to kill me....

HA!  Looking at my calendar right now, there is not a "normal week" between now and Easter.

Mar 01-05 - Early Out Wednesday
Mar 08-12 - Early Out Wednesday
Mar 15-19 - Early Out Thurs, No School Friday
Mar 22-26 - Band gone Friday to MSHSAA District Contests
Mar 29-31 - Early Out Wednesday for Spring Break.

I attended the "Distinction in Performance" banquet, last night, and was able to hear Peter Herschend, Vice President of the Missouri School Board (and co-founder/owner of Silver Dollar City) speak.  It was nice to hear his take on education in SW Missouri.  He said:

Quote
Two-thirds of our students go to schools that are accredited with distinction.  No other area of the state comes close.  It happens because in our corner of the world, there's a clear understanding of the importance of education and the importance of leadership in education.

Now, if we can just stop overburdening/sacrificing those of us on the front lines...

I didn't stay for that part of the meeting today to see what our district is going to do (since I am not "old enough" yet to be on career ladder).

The good news in our area is that we are going to be getting a bunch of wind turbines (like over 100 or more) and that will bring in a surge of $400,000 a year for the next 20 years.  That will sure help with rennovations and such.  There was even talk about just building a whole new school.  We'll see about that though.  lol

We're just starting to hear about budget cuts.  Our district is in a place to weather the storm for a year or two, but some of the rumors are scary.

Bottom line:  more work for less pay, more stress for less professional courtesy

Just tell me when to breathe in and out and how to sit in my chair - boy, is retirement that far away???

Well Governonr Quinn stated today that in next fiscal year which begins in July, the school districts are looking at a 17% cut from their budget.

Of course some of the school districts are looking at eliminating ag classes and art and music classes from the curriculum next year.

I would vote for a tax raise to save the schools.  Right now the state owes our school district $811,000.

How did we get in the mess and when will it end.  I say put more money into education and less into corrections.  I taught ABE in a medium security male prison and my budget for supplies for just my classroom was $2000, where a regular school teacher had a budget of $50 to $100 dollars for their classroom.

Well, I will step down from my soap box now.

Of course some of the school districts are looking at eliminating ag classes and art and music classes from the curriculum next year.

They can't legally do that in Missouri.  I honestly do not think it is legal anywhere else either.  DESE has pretty strict rules anymore about cutting the arts.

Post by: Twinsmom98 on March 10, 2010, 08:28:14 PM
I do hope you are correct.  In the bigger school districts I could see them trimming some of the programs.

But we have only 2 art teachers that take care of all the schools and 3 music/band teachers in our district.

The trouble is there cuts everywhere and if you have a job you better not leave it.  I just hoping that I have enough years in to avoid a layoff.  I can handle furlough days at least I get to keep my insurance.

Maybe Rod (fired ex-Governor) can donate some of his money from the Apprentice.

I am not really familiar with NEA since I taught for corrections and we were represented by AFSCME.

All in all I just feel like the politicians and the union gurus have forgotten what it was like on the front line.

Friday was the last day of classes for 3rd Qtr (even with the pushed back start and all of the snow days) - so grades are due on Lumen Monday at the end of school... Parent/Teacher Conferences are Thursday (otherwise I'd be at SDC) and then no school Friday (which is why I will be at SDC that day).

Spring Break starts on the 31st and goes through the 6th.

Once I hit Spring Break, the "hard part" of the school year is over.
I have MSHSAA District Solos this coming weekend and then the District Band contest the following weekend with the JH/HS Spring Concert on the following Monday.

Only think I really have after Easter is a marching competition in May and the elementary band concert at the end of April.... oh and graduation, but that is no biggie.

We have 46 days left as of Monday

We're like your school, Swoosh, only our grades are due in Lumen Tuesday.  Parent/teacher conferences are Thursday.  I'd have Friday off, but we have our district National Forensics League tournament Friday and Saturday, so no opening day weekend for me.  I suppose we could have gone Sunday, but that would be too exhausting, I think.

We really don't have a true spring break this year.  We get Thursday, Friday, and Monday on Easter weekend, I think it is.  I don't think they're taking any of it for make-up days, anyway.

I'm just glad it's fourth quarter.  The end is in sight.  This has been a tough year for me, too.  We added a family member in August, so I've had to learn new ways to balance everything in my life, and I'm not always successful, unless you call "survival" success!

My husband and I are taking a much needed couple-only trip for the 50th weekend.  We plan to leave as soon as I am off work that Friday.  I'm excited that the park will be open late that Friday and Saturday!

Happened to us last year. 36 certified employees were cut. I was barely safe. I guess I should count my lucky stars then that our district is doing so well.  We are about to receive a large influx of money due to the new farms that are to open Spring 2011 in our district.  They are contracted for 20 years and will bring in $40K more a year in taxes.  That will almost double our current tax money that is coming in.

Sorry to hear that other districts are having such rough times when ours is one the complete other side of the fence.

We have 12 -- but that is rather misleading because the band will be gone for a couple of those days.  Tomorrow we travel to Pella, Iowa for a HUGE marching competition.  I love going up there and competing agaisnt the Iowa bands because marching band is a major sport up there and for some odd reason we are one of only 2 bands in NE Missouri that takes marching band extremely serious.  (we have NO competition in NEMO).

We're headed to the KC St. Patrick's Day Parade next year (2011) and then the Liberty Bowl Parade/Half time in 2012.  Not bad for a small 1A band in NEMO that is a "suburb" of the county seat

PBS and RtI are swear words in my book.  Just the latest "phase/buzz words" in Missouri education.  Not a chance in hell it will work in our district as it would mean certain staff members would have to be accountable for discipline. Some staff members are so worried about being "popular" with the students they are afraid to even turn them in when they catch them doing something wrong because then the kid might not "like them" -- WTF cares!  I'm one of the meanest "by the books" teachers at our school and I'm still "popular" and I don't even care if I am or not.  LOL
Title: Re: SDCFans Teachers

Swoosh, they like ya 'cause at heart, the kids WANT discipline, don't they? Discipline and a sense of order in their life is why kids on the wild side join gangs, isn't it? Keep on being a by the books teacher. I don't have negative memories of any of the teachers I had in high school...they were all good to me in their own way. If someone has a negative memory of a teacher, it's probably because THE KID was the problem, right?
Title: Re: SDCFans Teachers

Well if that is the case they need to say "past winners will not be considered for additional awards" -- and if that is the case, then that is just bull.  I am offended that a website like that was even considered as the "best".

I mean I don't do the website to "win" but this year's winner just really irritates me - I guess I'm just a bad loser...

We started making senior composites last year with the class of 2009, and it has since became a tradition.  I like it too because those kids have put in a lot of hard work while they were in the program and deserve the recognition

I agree completely.  The same type of thing is happening as a result of our PBS trend.  "We want to reward as many students as possible," they tell me.  My response is, "Then we should just present every kid with a certificate as they walk in the door on the first day."  I'm just guessing - would bet on it if I was a betting man - that's what happened.

What kind of reward is it when just anyone and his dog can receive it?  How much is something worth when it is so easy to win?  You and I work hard on our sites and keep them updated (mine on almost a daily basis); for this thing to have won over yours is a joke.  What I can't figure out is who even applied for the award with that site, thinking it could compete in the first place?  Really?

BTW, I have your site bookmarked and check on it every day - - - well, not everyday, but probably once a month.

StaceySue, I use Edublogs, too.  Have you shared yours on here?

Helen: Dash… this is the third time this year you’ve been sent to the office. We need to find a better outlet. A more… constructive outlet.
Dash: Maybe I could, if you’d let me go out for sports.
Helen: Honey, you know why we can’t do that.
Dash: But I promise I’ll slow up. I’ll only be the best by a tiny bit.
Dash: Dashiell Robert Parr, you are an incredibly competitive boy, and a bit of a show-off. The last thing you need is temptation.
Dash: You always say ‘Do your best’, but you don’t really mean it. Why can’t I do the best that I can do?
Helen: Right now, honey, the world just wants us to fit in, and to fit in, we gotta be like everyone else.

No, I'm not really proud of it.   :)

It serves its purpose, I suppose.  One thing I have done with it for the past two years is set up online discussions for the students.  I upgraded my account and set up the passwords myself.  I mostly used it as a way for students to comment on articles in Upfront Magazine.  I haven't done a discussion lately.  I do them in class because many of my students say they don't have Internet access at home.  We had a research paper and the EOC this quarter, and we just finished the Julius Caesar unit.  I didn't have time for much else.

Lately, I've just used it for schedules and assignments.  I'm not entirely sure that anyone (students, parents) ever looks at my page...

I'll check it out.  It looks interesting.  I may ask you questions after I take a look.

OMG.  So some of the area schools are done with kids as of today.
They are **** to live with as the teachers (yes the teachers) from those schools are rubbing it in big time on facebook to us other teachers that still have to go until mid-week next week.  'Course with other schools now out, it makes it that much more difficult to keep our kids on task and focused.  I need to give a final next week in music apprec, but have not decided if it is *worth* it or not.

Year 4 of my teaching career is officially in the books.
I cannot believe that I have been teaching for 4 years already and that all 4 have been at this school district.  Not complaining, but man, time has really flown by.

In other news, for the 2nd year in a row, I received the "Teacher of the Year" award as voted on by the students.  (we also give out one that is voted on by the teachers).
Go Me. :D

Congrats Swoosh. We got have a student voted award because some teachers with small classes end up being outvoted by out PE/ choir, band classes that are traditionally 30+ each hour. 3 more days left for me until year 7 is in the books. Cannot wait!

So the guy in school with the strict behavior attitude for kids he teaches is the teacher of the year! Congratualtions Swoosh! See, those kids won't admit it, but they really do like discipline in the class. they just moan like they don't.

So Swoosh does that mean you have tenure now?  I did not know if it was the same in Missouri.  If so Congrats!!

I have both a Illinois and Missouri teaching certificates but never really used them.  In my school district there was too much politics.  Two job openings - three up for the positions - myself, the wife of a lawyer in town and a wife of a businessowner.  You know who was hired for the two jobs.

Today was the last day of school for my girls which is said since they go to Middle School now.

My one daughter had a field trip to a one room classroom, Purdy School at John A Logan College and they experienced the one room classroom, the games they played Annie Annie over and stilts to name a few and writing their names with a ink and feather.  She actually really enjoyed it.

I am just hoping I will survive the layoff this year.  That would put a real cramp in my summer trips.

No, unfortunately I have to wait one more year to be eligible for tenure.  You have to teach 5 years in one district to get your tenture and then teach one more year there after that with the actual tenure... then (after that 6th year) you can go anywhere in the state and teach for just one year before you are eligible for tenure at that district.

Yep Junior.  The "strict teacher" got "Teacher of the Year" -- it just shows that students want discipline and consistency.  I wish some of the other teachers in our district would get a clue and figure that out instead of trying to be the students' "FRIEND" all the time.

They'e are not YOUR friends, they can be a friend, but you are not friends in that sense.  No one will turn on you quicker than a student that has been "wronged" or has "lost faith" in you because you lied to them or went behind their back on something that was confidential.

It sounds like some of your colleagues don't understand the difference between "friendly" and "friends". I see the same thing at my job: successful staff know how to be polite and friendly, without being familiar. Those who lose control seem to have a binary switch, with nothing in between "standoffish" and "overly personal".

I just want to say...

Woo Hoo!

I'm packed up, everything's graded, and I am home today!  Yippee!

Of course, I'm teaching credit recovery this summer from June 1-24.  Then after that, the month of July is ALL MINE!

I hope to squeeze a weekend Branson trip in this month.  Yakov was on our local talk radio station, and he offered tickets for $10 for the Moscow Circus for Joplin residents.  That price includes dinner.  I have no idea how good the show would be or how the food is, but it's worth a shot for $10 a person, I think.  The offer is only good in June, so I think a day at SDC and an evening at Yakov would be fun.

We're going to Colorado Springs the first week in July.  We were going next week, but our district suddenly decided we would have summer school, so we moved that trip.

Anyway, I'm glad that summer is finally here!

Our summer school was split into two two-week session this year, and I'm teaching the second one, which begins in the middle of July.  I hate summer school and have only taught it once in 20 years, but with no raises this year, etc., I figure I should earn all I can while I can.  I still hate summer school.

Icky...summer school in July!  I agree that summer school is not my favorite gig, but the money comes in handy.

I did have time to tweak things for next year, but my brain is ready for vacation now.

We have a mini-trip to Branson this weekend, and we are heading to Colorado for the family vacation in July.

OK, I'm being nosy here, but I've seen several of the posting from our SDCFans.com teachers who say in one posting they teach one subject, and in another posting, they mention something else. So, let's line up all the teachers on our Website and find out which subjects they teach! Rube, you have mentioned coaching, art, photography. I've seen someone mention they teach band, too...just curious...are they still doing the thing in the public schools where you teach one subject in the morning, and maybe a different one in the afternoon because the district is too cheap to hire two teachers to do the work?  ;)

I primarily teach language arts to sophomores, but in a small school district, you probably wear many hats!  I also teach speech, coach the speech team, and direct the fall play.  I never really thought I would be doing the rest.  I did forensics in high school, and during my years at Crowder, I was involved in theatre.  When I was hired, my district was looking to revive its speech program.  So, one Praxis and countless professional development hours later, here I am.   :)

By the way, I am going into my classroom later this week.  Anyone else?  I can't believe it's August already.  I have to start working on things so I don't panic.  Officially, I have to be there Aug. 16.

Well, I am an odd ball. I am a former art teacher, that in order to keep a job in the district/ school, I  had to go back and persue a masters several years ago to apply for a job as a gifted education teacher. Being a gifted student in the same district, I was familiar with the mentality, and the programs offered. At this time I teach gifted students (Literal geniuses) language arts & social studies. This means 6 preps a day (I have to get ready for 6 different classes in 6 different hours). I am a coach of 2 high school sports, and I am our schools STUCO sponsor, and the sponsor of our Quiz Bowl Team. Other than this, I am the designer for our schools shirts, banners, etc, as well as the school historian, and sometimes I get to do things that are not involved with school when I go home at night like photography and painting. I miss art classes which was my undergrad degree, but the beneficial thing is that now I do not do art all day long, so when I gt home I hav the drive to create that I did not have the years of teaching art (I would be mentally shot when I got home, I would not want to pick up a brush at all).

I go back this coming Thursday...ugggghhhhh no kids yet though

I teach fourth graders, but am certified to teach secondary communication arts, speech, and theater.

I fully believe the saying "a teacher is NEVER off the clock"
I'd LOVE to hae 3 months off and only work 8-3 everyday like so many people think we do.

Isn't that the truth?  Even in so-called downtime, I'm thinking about what worked and what didn't.  I taught summer school in June, and I spent some of the day working on things for next year.  After summer school, I still was considering what to do.  I still haven't figured out what the fall play will be, and I need to do the play earlier this year.  I'm still previewing scripts for forensics.  It never seems to end, does it?

By the way, I plan to implement an independent reading program along with the literature we read for class.  It's worked well for some teachers.  Have any of you tried something like this?  Also, I'm going to try literature circles.  These changes scare me to death, but maybe they will benefit the kids.  Everyone keeps saying that today's kids are different and we need to meet their needs, but it scares me to try things that I've never seen implemented first-hand.

I've rambled on again...continue your conversation.

We have a "fall break" much like a spring break, but yes...it is in the fall, after qtr 1 is complete. So we go back a week earlier than any other schools, and still get out the same time, if not later since we build in NO snow days. With coaching, camps, clinics etc, My summer seemed WAY too short. But I do like the predictability of a normal schedule once school starts, I will be able to get back to regular sleeping times! Gotta get started with that since , oh yah...I go back Thursday bright and early!

Almost all of my supplies/orders are in now so that is exciting.  I'm busy getting new music sorted and stuffed into folders now.  Very excited for the new school year to start.  I cannot say that has been the case in the past, but this year is going to be a "big year" for us with our participation in the Kansas City St. Patty's Day Parade in March and then a lot of fundraisers to get ready for our Bowl Game Parade trip in Winter 2011.

Summer break? What's that?

Our 7 year old just had his best buddy spend three weeks with us. (He's a friend's grandson, and they live 80 miles away.)

On one of the last few days he was here, Trey asked John David if he was ready to go back to school. My wife overheard, and explained that John David doesn't go to "regular" school, and that he's been in school the whole three weeks. All the reading they did together was school. Trey thought that was pretty cool.  8)

Speaking of reading, it was sad to see this very smart 8 year old trying to read. He had no concept of phonics, so he would look at a word and try to guess what it was. He couldn't read for comprehension at all, because he didn't read sentences -- he just guessed at a series of words.

In three weeks with us, he improved his reading skills many times over. He'll be heading back to school understanding phonics, and he's able to read aloud with some confidence now. We bought several books for him, to start his own library at home. I hope the Louisiana public schools don't set him back too far.

Not to get too sidetracked, but we're a bit spoiled by having a kid who loves to read and learn so much. We actually have to get onto him, because he'll leave a half dozen encyclopedia volumes lying open throughout the house, as he cross-references topics and moves onto new things to learn.  :D

Funny thing though, a lawsuit was filed, by of all people PBS (the station this time) against the Positive Behavior Support people to cease and desist....so the name should change for all the rest of ya'all as ours has this year.

Survived my first day back.  (year 5 is not officially in progress) Only 174 days left until summer.  ;D

Everything went very smoothly, only complaint was the fact that AC in my wing of the building decided to quit today (they have people working on it, but they say it might be Monday before it is 100% again) so that made the room very warm, and with a lot of band kids -- well let's just say that it was quite warm in there.

We are on day 10 ish right now so things are in full gear here, another couple weeks, and it is progress reports. We switched to Infinite Campus from Pinnacle (which I liked better then Making the Grade...which was a step up from the red gradebooks all handwritten) ALMOST a new program for each of the 8 yrs in public school teaching! This is our 3rd year of Lumen at my district... you would think we'd have all the kinks worked out by now, but no... Lumen decided (like facebook would do) to update itself for the sake of making things more complicated.  ::)
Title: Re: SDCFans Teachers
Post by: StaceySue on August 22, 2010, 12:19:28 AM
This is our third year for Lumen, too.  I don't know why it has to be so complicated.  When I first came to the district, I bought my own gradebook program since the district didn't use one.  I bought it over the Internet, and I didn't have instructions, although I'm sure there was customer service/help if I needed it.  The point is--I didn't need instructions!  It was so easy, I could use common sense to use it.  It even had online parent access!

With Lumen, we started using it one year when I taught summer school.  I was on the phone with Lumen nearly every day of summer school...

And why can't all of the reports be in the same place for crying out loud?!!  And why does it sometimes just get stuck on something, such as attendance?!!  And why does it update to make it more complicated, like right around the times grade are due?!!

I hear it has features that make it easy to send info to DESE, but I find it hard to believe that anything is easy about it.

SO I am getting the hang of Infinite Campus...in case you all move to that, it isn't all too bad. Great for administrators and counselors, a bit rough and bumpy for teachers.
Mid term reports for us are due Friday (yes we've been in that long already!)

That is a small issue compared to the full 6th grade Gifted Comm. Arts curriculum that is due in one month (they told me today-first mention since it was put on hold in the Spring) So if you have one laying around, I need help, 1 person plus 1 full curriculum in about 30 days is going to be horrible, and not worth the $500 when it is completed. This sucks.

Mid terms were in for us on Friday...1/2 through the quarter or 1/4 through the semester or 1/8 through the year! Fall break is in about 4 weeks, so I am pretty excited about that. Just 9 3/4 years to retirement!  I can't decide whether my mantra should be "I think I can" or "One day at a time".

IDK about you other teachers, but this school year thus far has been a rough one.
I've never had burnout this early in the school year before.

Post by: StaceySue on October 09, 2010, 12:50:09 AM
Yes, it's been rough for me, too.  I changed some of my policies this year, and while the changes were good for the kids (I think), it's been more stressful for me.  Also right now, I'm three weeks into play rehearsal, and I'm beat.  But that happens every fall.  Our first quarter ends Oct. 18.

By the way, Swoosh, do your kids march in the Maple Leaf parade at Carthage?  Just curious.   I can't remember how far away your school is.

Post by: History Buff on October 09, 2010, 09:32:17 AM
Yeah, the burnout started before the first day and has not gone away.  I have never seen so many good teachers cry.  I've never heard so many say they would leave the profession if they could find a paycheck somewhere else.  All the edicts coming from the emperors in charge are non-negotiable, and the federal government has overstepped its Constitutional rights.  The system is taut and will break very, very soon.
Title: Re: SDCFans Teachers
Post by: Swoosh on October 09, 2010, 10:25:05 AM
^^No, that's way too far away from us.  My school is up in the Northeastern part of the state.  The farthest south we get is Columbia... though we were invited (and have accepted) to march in KC St. Patrick's Day Parade in March.  The plan is to also go march at the Cotton Bowl Parade in 2011 or 2012.

^I know what you mean about good teachers crying.  I personally cannot put my finger on what it is about this year that is making it that much more stressful than years in the past.  I think PBS might be some of it, but I question if something like that would affect all aspects of education as much as it seems to be.  It's not the kids, I love my students, even the bad ones, so IDK.

PBS, IPI, NCLB, RT3, RTI, GLE, MAP, and constant assessments and scrutiny.  No local control.  People can legitimately complain about waste in education.  They can look at the money we spend on stupid things and see money that could have gone into the classroom, to keep classes small, and to directly help students learn, and yet, we keep telling them that we don't have enough to pay the teachers we have a decent salary.  We cut Career Ladder, Parents and Teachers, and good reasonable programs that directly affect classrooms, but we keep learning coaches and literacy specialists.  We take special education and feed it to the alter of behavior interventions.  We spend all our money to subscribe to assessment programs, internet record keeping for assessments, assessments of the assessments, but we don't give teachers the time or the will to act on what the assessments tells us.  We jump on the bandwagon of national health programs, make the classroom teachers supervise them at the expense of even more "planning time".  We remove all aspects of a grassroots movement and require collaboration with others at every level - lateral teams, spiral teams, grade level teams, behavior teams, building teams, and specialty teams.  No where is individuality respected.  No where is the teacher treated like a professional - even by those who climbed through their very ranks to achieve their high positions.  No where is the teacher given the same respect as the patrons - the time to be with his/her family, the ability to sit down to a lunch or an uninterrupted planning time.  No where is the teacher allowed to have an opinion; only the opinion of the edicts and proclamations being force fed to us.  Dissension is bad, unacceptable, negative, unproductive, and undermining of the regime.  No opinion is welcome unless it allows for poverty to be the greatest excuse for everything.

I can't put my finger on it...but maybe EVERYTHING is the reason.  Good people, who have dedicated their lives to a noble career, who have committed themselves to future generations, who believe that the future should be better than the present, are now being shut down and shut up for the sake of a small number of people wielding tremendous power under the name of education reform.  This is not the way to do it - we all know it's not - and yet there's not anything you can say about it, because no decision maker accepts any responsibility.  They pass the buck to someone higher than they are and claim to be just as helpless.  It's high time for superintendents to get together and say "no".  Stand together and refuse the ultimatums, the earmarks, and red tape.  It's time for school boards to stop spending money with strings attached and send the money back.  We don't need that money - we need the money that can be spent in the best interest of the local community.  It's time for teachers to take back our school system!

Untie my hands and let me do what I am good at doing.  I used to be good at my job; now, I must stand where someone else stands me, say someone else's words, and smile when someone expects me to smile - and all the while, I am the one who takes the beating when their plans don't work.  I could scream, but my scream is not heard in the educational vacuum of the 21st Century!

It would be nice if our rate of pay would increase as much and as quickly as our "rate of with-holdings"

I know how you feel, I finished my master's in curriculum last year, and I take home about $50 a month more than last year even after bumping up on the scale.

We've been working on vertical teams and aligning curriculum for the past two years.  We had a meeting this week, actually, and we were discussing "scope and sequence" and our EOC results.  I just don't understand why we are starting from scratch with sequencing.  Really?  Is there really no other school in the U.S. that has success in figuring out when to teach what?  When I asked if we could model ours using another school's successful plan, no one said anything.  It was almost like I didn't ask the question.  Then we discussed national standards and how everything will be changing.  I'm trying to understand how our current CLEs could be so different.  So, I suppose in the next few years we will be redoing everything we're doing now.

We also found out that Missouri will not be giving performance events with the EOCs this year due to budget constraints.  Soon after, we were told that under national core standards that we would be testing the students 2-3 times per year.  We can't afford to give the students an essay prompt on an English exam, but we can afford to test them twice to three times as often?

Sorry, I've rambled on...

This is changing directions with this thread, but have you teachers ever organized a field trip to SDC for your students? I know the first thing the kids will do is run to rides, but if you gave them a check list of craftsmen to visit, or told them to visit the McHaffee and Birdle's cabin, soak up some history and folklore with Aunt Judy telling stories, or visiting the school house, would it work? Chime in!

Ours were "Student Led" conferences. It places all the responsibility/ blame on the kids, and they discuss/ justify why they have succeed, or failed. If only NCLB did that....
Title: Re: SDCFans Teachers

Interesting idea Rube.  Although I had more students come with their parents to the conferences than I ever had before.  I, too, survived parent/teacher conferences yesterday, and I do mean survive.  I have a horrible cold.  I even turned down a spontaneous trip to SDC today suggested by my husband.  I am drained.

As far as a field trip, I wanted to take my drama/speech kids to see Dickens this year.  We usually attend a "professional" performance each year.  My district has said "no field trips"  this year, so I don't know if I could swing it.  My group fits in the van or mini-bus, and I would drive so we wouldn't need to pay a driver.  It would be a fun outing, though.  I have some seniors that I've worked with for three years or more, so it would be a nice trip for their senior year.  We're only an hour and a half away, so we could just do a day trip.  Plus, this would be much less costly for the students than when we went to see Wicked and Phantom.
Title: Re: SDCFans Teachers
Post by: rubedugans on October 29, 2010, 09:43:51 AM
Very true about costs. I have 16 exceptionally gifted students, we fit in a few cars, don't need a bus, and take local free, or low cost trips in StL (Art Museum, Botanical Gardens, University Tours, Theater Tours). Dickens would also allow the students more than likely to talk with the actors about their path towards the stage, and what aveneus they have ahead of them.

Quote
Both Senate and House members in the Capitol this week confirmed the likelihood of renewed enthusiasm for attacks on worker rights and attacks on public education in the upcoming legislative session.   The results of the election are likely to have serious consequences for school employees and for public schools, and the Association will need unprecedented member effort and involvement to educate new legislators, advocate for a proven agenda in support of children and public education and to fight those proposals that threaten our public schools.

HOUSE AND SENATE SELECT NEW LEADERSHIP

Rep. Scott Dieckhaus has indicated that he expects to be picked to chair the House Elementary and Secondary Education Committee next year.  Rep. Dieckhaus filed legislation late last session on some of the key issues he plans to pursue: statewide expansion of charter schools, public school open enrollment, elimination of teacher tenure and a state-mandated teaching evaluation method.

Not a resounding yes, but traditionally they are for less change in the system. Not that either has what they need to make the schools work under No Child Left Behind, but I do not see this as the end all fix all. I do agree that teachers need to be responsible for the teaching, but I do not like the sound of the State mandated reviews, and a total lask of tenure. It just makes me question my profession...I just want to teach and forget about the legistative aspects passed on by those who have never set foot in a classroom on the other side of a desk.

Career-Ladder is supposed to be fully funded for the 2011-2012 school year the last I heard.

IKR about the tenure?  I'm up for it after this school year and it will annoy me to no end if it is no longer available due to the stupid state stepping in -- then again, it will make it easier to get ride of some complacent co-workers I have to deal with who have tenure and don't really teach anymore.

as for school...
10+2 half days...we don't have to have grades submitted until Jan 3...even though I am going to finish mine before Christmas.

I had a pretty busy weekend.  I took kids to a speech tournament Friday night, and we didn't leave until after midnight!  That's the latest tournament I've ever been to.  I didn't get home until well after 2:00.  We grabbed some late dinner at Taco Bell, drove home, and then waited for a few kids to get rides.  We brought home a few trophies, so it was worth it.  :)

Today, I went with a student to the American Legion Oratorical Contest.  It was the county level, and we only had two competitors from our county.  Still, my student advanced.  Overall, we had a great weekend!

5th place in MO for my quiz bowl team! (really tied with 4th but they overall had more correct)
214th internationally

One more box checked for "Things to do this school year" list

And only 5 full days and 2- 1/2 days remaining after today.

Not sure whose idea it was...but we were called off last night at about 10:30pm. With our rural roads in the outlying areas of our suburban district, the ice was just too much. Ice trucks wrecked, and overturned, police wrecked en route...40+ cars abandoned on a several mile route....SNOW DAY!

Needless to say, it isn't great since finals start tomorrow, but I can handle 1 more full day, and 2 -1/2 days this semester!

We had a 1HR delay today.  Several area schools called off.  Not sure why they called off because it wasn't too bad when I went to school.

Done with "real days" of school for the semester.  We have our "play day" tomorrow and the ever famous FACULTY vs SENIORS volleyball game -- should be epic.  I cannot wait to whoop up on the kids again.  We're 4 years undefeated now -- love to make that 5.

What!!??

We're supposed to be out May 19th!  I need to scroll back and see when you started.  Or, do you get a spring break?

Oh well.  I'm hoping for no snow days this year, and the almanac seems to say it's possible.  I'm usually pretty excited for a snow day, but we may just make a road trip to the Mouse this year, and the earlier the better, I say.

Merry Christmas, teachers!

Yes I am back...well no students today, They arrive tommorow. Today is a work day that includes a chili cookoff that I organized. 12 chilis...Good thing there's no kids, they wouldn't be able to stand the aftermath!

Had kids back today and classes went fine.  However my body decided that I needed to lose my voice today, so that made lecturing interesting to say the least... and for those of you that say "hey wait a minute, I thought you were a band director" - I am, but I also get to teach music appreciation and there is still some verbal instruction that occurs with band too. :P

I'm thankful for all you teachers.  You have a tough job, but ultimately very rewarding, I presume.  A friend posted this on FB and I thought I'd re-post it here for you guys and gals.  I'm sure you've seen some variation of it, but it's still thought provoking, and sad.

He is in mine, but I have to tread lightly unfortunately. Being a public school World History class to exceptionally gifted kids-geniuses), I have to teach the basics of Greek & Norse Mythology, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Shintoism, Mormonism, Judaism, and Christianity (with a few others sprinkled in). The kids know upfront what I believe, and we openly discuss the similarities/ differences, how  each originated, how each approach different conflicts/ world issues, and it rounds them out to more understand themselves, and their Faith, as well as the opposing viewpoints of others. Certain times walking in, you would think it was a world religions/ philosophy course, but it is all in our text, and MO state curricula! And as difficult as it is to stay impartial, sometimes personal opinions come out (both theirs, and mine on occasion), and we openly discuss different viewpoints. I couldn't do what I do without HIM in my class, by my side.

We originally had tomorrow off as well, but it is a "make-up" whereas today was a "safe" day and could not be used to make-up snow days.

I was off today. Might have a few more off next year seeing that the school board has just approved the cuts for 95 jobs in the district. My whole department district wide was literally cut in half (gifted education). So we will see if 7 years Seniority keeps me employed. At least I have 3 certificates in case we encounter a R.I.F. ( that's the rumor!) I might be able to keep a job in the district.

I have conferences Tue/ Thurs. Funny thing, we are holding them from 3:15-7:00. Last I checked most parents do not get off at 3:25 like teachers. I am not expecting much of a showing (even less than the typical Spring conferences-which are always lighter than Fall). I have a track meet Thursday, and my wife is a guest conductor at her brothers school for his spring concert Tuesday...looks like I might be missing mine totally...Well I won't say i will be "missing" it!

As terrible as those storms were, I suppose it was a good thing that they didn’t hit in the middle of the school year, or semester.

We are one of the largest county schools in our area with over 18,000 K-12 students in our district. When we had a very large population increase in the early 70's due to St Louis' urban sprawl, schools could not be built quick enough to accomodate the influx of students, so cycles/ year round school was formed. It worked like this only for elementary students (Middle and High schools had summers off) 4 qtrs of 9 weeks in school+ 3 weeks out of school=1 school year...and unfortunately no summer break longer than the 3 weeks before entering the next grade. Now, with enough facilities, they finally overturned the cycled schedule and altered the whole district making it 4 qtrs with a 1.5 week break between each (Think of them like Spring break...only extended...and in the Fall, Winter, and Spring breaks) for all levels K-12. Hence our need to return early to accomodate the extra/ longer breaks).

School days are the best time to visit Branson!

Teachers totally rock for staying behind to mold the young minds. 8)

Yeah what's the big hurry with some of these districts this year?  Some of my friends are in the same boat with meetings starting on the 1st... shoot they just got out of school and now they're going back already?

The new district I am teaching at refuses to start until after the State Fair is over since so many kids are involved with that.

Thats a rarity now but I am sure it is highly valued by those families.  Especially with the steer show now being in the second week of the fair rather than the first weekend.

Good to know some schools still consider the rural lifestyle.

August 17 is the hard date for Joplin to begin school.  I haven't heard yet about the teacher start date, but I have a two-hour training on the second.  I'm dreading all the tornado talk on opening day and any further crisis training they'll make us go through.

Well I finally have my new room ready to go.  Still have another full week off before I have to report on the 22nd.  We get kids on the 24th.  Frankly, I'm ready to get in and back to a routine, but I'll force myself to enjoy another week off for summer.

As I said before, we have been in as teachers since Aug 1, and students reported yesterday. 2 days down...167 more to go!

No really I am hoping this is a great year. This is year 8 in this school, year 9 overall, and I have yet another position within my school. I am still teaching my Social Studies, however I am now doing some co-teaching for a few other subject areas. It might be a challenge at first to find my role in this mix, but it should be fun having new perspectives on the curriculum.

I am a teacher, but I teach at the college level, mostly non-traditional students, here in Rolla, MO.  Our August Term begins on Monday.

My older son went began 8th grade today (a BIG adventure:  new school, new format, ride the bus, first year in public school); my younger son will start 5th grade next Wednesday.

Thank you Rube! Sorry for the late reply, but I've been pretty busy trying to get into a routine and everything. And I am going to go into physical therapy, and hopefully work for a sports team someday.

My University had a very large PT/and OT Dr. program and my wife's University had  large OT/PT programs-she opted for exercise science but still had may classes with the other health majors. Good Luck to you. as a former college coach and current high school coach, we need your profession!

2.5 weeks until qtr 1 is over and we are 1/4 through the year!!!! Then we will start our 1.5 week fall break!
(This is one of the reasons we had to be back in school Aug. 1= we get part of our summer break in October, and the other week of summer in our 2 wk spring break-even though this is our snow day bank)

Anyone at the MSTA assembly of delegates in Columbia?

This is my first year missing it.  They sort of ticked me off when they disbanded the state committee that I was on.  It worked out for the best though as we are busy getting ready to go to McCluer South-Berkeley for State Quarterfinal Class 3A Football tomorrow.  It has been rather hectic getting things squared away.  Since I am the department chair for music, I have been on the phone almost constantly this week getting things arranged for our band to go with the team.  Also (lucky me) I got put in charge of the bus for the dance squad and cheerleaders too.  So In my caravan tomorrow, I will be in my truck pulling our equipment trailer, then comes 2 buses with band, cheer and dance on them.  It should be fun, but the weather is being iffy and we are more than likely going to get wet from rain.  Yay?

I would wait until you win the National History Teacher of the Year.  More leverage with a better looking resume  :)

You may have more confidence in that than I do.  I'm pretty sure I'm not what they're looking for.
