Title: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: Coaster on August 18, 2007, 02:03:14 PM
I got this idea from another forum...

This is the place where you can relax from all your great Silver Dollar City conversations with others and you can just talk about anything you want!! What you did today, what's going on in your life, anything! We don't care!!

I start my high school career on Tuesday. I got my schedule and I've found out I don't have any classes with four of some of my best friends. Quite sad really.

I'm thankfully no longer in school, but a girl I know is starting her senior year this year, and boy things are different at my old high school. They're starting this "Small Learning Communities" thing this year where all the students are sorted into five "houses", similar to how it's done in Harry Potter. The sorting is random, and there's no transferring once you've been sorted, so I'm feeling really sad for the seniors who are finding themselves in different "houses" than their friends... I hate the idea of kids being broken up like that.

Now, for the freshmen, that's fine, 'cause we already get split anyway at that point in time because all 8th graders go from one huge 8th grade school to being split into two different high schools. I'm just feeling sorry for the high schoolers who already have made friends and are getting separated from them; the only way they'll have classes together is through electives.

Anyway, I already have my two-year degree, but I'm thinking of going back to my college next year if the rumors are true about that campus getting more art classes next spring. Right now, the only campus of the Metro colleges that has extensive art classes is a 20-30 minute drive from where I live.

I really hope art classes will be coming closer, 'cause I really want to take as many as I can.

I hope high school treats you well, CitW... Whenever things may feel like they're getting out of hand, just think about the fact that you have college to look forward to... Because believe me, college is SO great (well, at least the community college was; don't know much about university atmosphere).

What did you go to college to be Joy?
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: Joy on August 19, 2007, 04:20:17 PM
Well, I could only afford a two-year community college (by way of Pell Grant and A+ scholarship), so I just went for my general Associate in Arts. So, basically, I didn't get a degree for anything specific.

If I ever can afford it, though, I would love to get a Bachelor's in Illustration.

So, what are you interested in studying?

I don't really like studying anything. History is okay with me but I don't really enjoy studying. I would love to be one of the higher ups at SDC someday. I also enjoy football. I'd love to be a head coach someday. I've got big dreams I know.

I teach 7th grade language arts.  I have even started a middle school coaster club and took the kids to Holiday World last spring.  Maybe this year we'll go to SDC.  Tomorrow is the first day of school in my district Yea!   :D

I hope all you students on this forum have a great school year.

School starts on Tuesday for me. Orientation is tomorrow. I play football and one of my coaches is one of my teachers this year so it should be fun.

I should start a coaster club at my school. In high school I'm wanting to do the Lumberjack Club. The Lumberjack Club gets together once a month in the morning before school and eats pancakes. That's all they do!! It will be fun.

Hey guys!! What's up?? I got to go to football practice now, I'll be on later tonight though to hopefully talk to you guys. See ya later!

EDIT: I decided to edit this post instead of double posting. I hate to double post even though I sometimes have to do it. Once we get more members than hopefully I will never have to do it again. ANYWAYS, do any of you guys have Yahoo Messenger names? I would love to talk to you guys sometime on there. If you don't want to post them here for everyone to see then you can PM me. Or if you think I'm the annoying 14 year old SDC wannabe guru (I call myself that after seeing Joy's album) that I am, feel free to not send anything at all. Thanks!

Errr, I've got a ton of work to do this week, and it doesn't look like it will lessen up anytime soon. In the mean time I have next to no time for recreation, working on this site, working on my other sites, or doing freelance work which I really need to do for the money.

Again, enjoy high school while you can.

I'm glad you're first day was a success. As long as you have good teachers and good friends, high school should be a really good experience. It was high school where I really began to learn how to assert myself as an individual; if I'd stayed stuck in homeschooling, I wouldn't be nearly the person I am today.

I have a Yahoo ID, but I never get on Messenger anymore. I find myself too caught up in all my online surfing that I never use messengers. My friend is always getting after me for never being on the messengers, but I just... forget.

Well start getting on messenger for me and your friend Joy!! Tomorrow and Friday we are on a heat schedule. Only a few of the rooms in my high school are air conditioned. I only have two air conditioned classes, where in middle school all my classes were air conditioned. So I'm gettin out of school at eleven tomorrow. And the best part---football practice is only an hour and a half!! Yay!

I don't really get out much; I'm a strong introverted personality type, and I also don't have a license or car.... So I tend to stay at home most of the time.

So, what's everyone's plans for Labor Day weekend?

I'm hoping to go to the KC Irish Fest at least one day; I've never missed a single year of Irish Fest, so I just can't stay away. But they don't have as many groups performing of the people I've come to enjoy. So, I'm thinking of just going Saturday night for the Elders concert, during which they're gonna have fireworks.

I'm thinking of going to Santa-Cali-Gon on Monday, 'cause Liverpool's having a free concert there that day. I'm not really much into going to SCG, 'cause it's all the same stuff year after year, but I'd really like to see Liverpool perform.

I'm going to Rock the Light Music Festival in Kansas City at the Starlight Theatre. It should be fun. I'm excited. On Friday I've got a football game. It's a varsity game so I most likely won't get to play very much. Hopefully I get in on a few snaps.

Errrrrr.... I'm so ticked, web design can be some pretty hard crap sometimes. It's not so much the actually building of sites or coding functions, it's really just the coming up with new and good looking designs that really makes everything hard.

At least I've got most of that huge pile of work I was given last week done...

Sometimes my football coaches can be really stupid. We just had a full day of school. Then we all had to go to a 3 hour football practice in the 95 degree weather. Now they told us we have to go to practice at 5:00 AM tomorrow morning. Which means I have to wake up at 4:30. Now that sucks. I love to sleep. Plus I have algebra homework and a couple tests to study for. And then after practice I have to go to school. Grrr!

School was a half day today because of excessive heat. I was dead tired. I think around one or so I fell asleep on the couch. It's now four o' clock and my mom woke me up. I was tired!

^Doesn't your school have air conditioning? At my school they never considered letting out because of heat, it's not like it'll be cooler at home.

Btw, double posts don't really matter here.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: Coaster on August 28, 2007, 05:00:16 PM
Our high school isn't air conditioned. Today was probably the last day we're getting out early. And it's much cooler at home. I have air conditioning at home! It's supposed to be in the 80's all week I think now. Which is good.

And I know double posts don't matter but for some reason I hate double posting.

Wow! I feel like I missed a lot on the forums today. A LOT of threads had new posts in them. I love that because it means slowly but surely these forums are growing. I'll probably miss a lot tomorrow also because it's our first football game!! I think we'll do pretty good. Wish me luck!!

I was also elected for freshman student council. We plan the dances and have a float in the homecoming parade. We just kinda plan everything in general.

Also, be watching for the debate forum coming sometime in early September!!

This will be a quadruple post. I'm practically talking to myself here. Anyways, tonight was our first game. It was a victory!! We won 20-0. Unfortunately no freshman got to play at all. That might've been a good thing because I really hurt my elbow in practice yesterday and it hurts like crap. Hopefully I'll be close to 100% by Monday's practice.

On a sidenote, 3 day break from school!!

Nice. I actually tried watching a football game the other day - couldn't do it. It just doesn't draw me. I mean, even in movies, I just don't get it. I like sports that keep up the pace and don't have to stop all the time, like rugby and soccer.

Some people just don't like football I guess. I love it though. Anyways, I saw that Joy and Whales got their questions answered in Conductor Sam's blog. You're celebrities now!! I'll put up the debate thread sometime tomorrow. I got to doctor up my elbow and I have a workout tomorrow morning. Then tomorrow night I'm going to Rock the Light in KC. Where should I post the debate thread in Whales?? The Random section or General SDC??

Yesterday I went to Rock the Light Music Festival at Starlight Theatre in Kansas City. It was a lot of fun. I got to see close to ten bands AND I got to go backstage and get Hawk Nelson's autograph. (Most of you probably don't know who Hawk Nelson is though).

It was weird last night, I woke up at like 2 in the morning with a horrible pain in my leg. Turns out it was a really bad cramp. I don't ever get cramps so this was a new feeling for me. I could even feel the knot in my leg. It hurt so bad. Anybody else ever get cramps??

What is this like a triple post, ahhh well, if other people would post in this thread I wouldn't have to do this, oh well. I think we might have a lurker on this site who just isn't signing up or something. Steve and I have talked about this through PM's and we both think that we have a few lurkers here who are just too lazy to sign up. Anyways here's the evidence:

Clicky (http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=608164)

Now, I think this is weird because we were just talking about a BSF remake so it looks like the person just went onto RCT3 and made himself a (not very good) recreation of BSF. I say not very good because if you click on the download link and look at the picture you'll see what I'm talking about. What do you guys think of this.

Or it could just all be a coincedence.  ???
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: shavethewhales on September 03, 2007, 11:30:57 AM
Interesting, that's really not even a re-creation. Looks like the only thing he took from the original ride was the name.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: Coaster on September 03, 2007, 11:34:08 AM
I know that's why I said, it wasn't very good.  ;D  I already know he didn't spend very much time on it for two reasons:

1. If he's a lurker and decided to make a recreation because of our topic, then he couldn't have spent very much time on it because our topic just started yesterday.
2. You can just tell he didn't put very much work into it.

Do you think he's a lurker or it's just a coincedence??

EDITED POST:

Congrats! Sounds like your team's really doin' good. That's awesome.

Not much to report on my end. Just had a whole week home alone, which was kinda nice. It was quiet and peaceful.

On Monday, I went with my dad and a couple others to the little waterpark that's down the street from my house. It's the only the second time I've ever been to a waterpark, and it was the first time I've ever been brave enough to go down one of the big water slides. Of course, I only did the one where you ride a tube down, so I guess I took a step up from the Waterboggan (which I've not ridden in YEARS).... Next year, I'll hopefully be thinner and therefore feel more confident in going down one of the slides where it's just you and nothing else.

Thanks for the support of our football team Joy. We beat a team that we weren't supposed to beat, and it's a school that's bigger than us so it was a pretty big victory.

What waterpark did you go to?
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: Joy on September 09, 2007, 10:00:11 AM
It's a tiny little thing called Adventure Oasis in Independence. It's one of those residential-type places that has a small swimming pool, a couple slides, a kiddie area, and a not-very-long lazy river. It's only $6 for residents, so it's a nice deal for those who can't afford to go to Oceans of Fun.

It just opened a couple years ago, and this was my first time there. It was nice. Thankfully it wasn't quite as hot as it had been here, and they let me wear my t-shirt over my swimsuit so I didn't get sunburned. With my extremely pale skin, I get burned REALLY easily. Luckily, I came away from the park with zero burn! YAY! :)

Meh, it sucks how things have really plunged lately activity-wise, but all that will change soon. I've got a load of updates that I'm working on, including several articles and a huge new batch of photos that Copper sent in. Then, of course, there's new the site look and upgrade package that I'm going to attempt to finish this weekend that will pretty the site up a lot.

And that's not even mentioning what's going on at SDC. The announcement is coming in the next few weeks, and there should be a good lot to look forward to throughout the off season. Besides that, it sounds like this will be a really good year for CC.

I got my digital camera as well as the tapes and high-capacity battery for my camcorder. So, I'm all set for my trip to SDC in December!

So, Christmas music started even earlier this year than last year... Star 102 started its 24/7 Christmas music at 8am on October 31st. Yep, that's right--the Christmas music was going before the kids had even gone out trick'or'treating.

98.1 KUDL started their Christmas music at 9am this morning (November 1). That's when they started last year, and last year they were the first of the stations to switch over. But apparently the demand was so high, that Star caved and started on Halloween.

So, what do ya'll think of the early Christmas music?

Ugh, what a crappy day of work. I couldn't figure out how to get a multi-level navigation bar working, so I sat there working and reworking it for hours to no avail. If I can't get it working on Monday, I may blow a gasket.

I love Christmas music. But I think right after Halloween is the perfect time to start it, or right after Thanksgiving. But not year round.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: shavethewhales on November 04, 2007, 08:35:52 PM
I still think it's annoying though, that Thanksgiving is run over every year because all the merchants are focused on Christmas. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, it almost seems like holidays exist for the sole purpose of aiding merchants. Probably one of the only reasons we pay attention to Thanksgiving is the fact that stores have sales on it and the day after. And don't even get me started on the appearance of Easter Bunnies in the mall, on which you can sit and ask for easter presents.

Yeah, I'll be watching. I'm not into football, but even I'm impressed by the Patriots' undefeated season. It'll be interesting to see who wins.

Plus, ya gotta love the Super Bowl commercials! And a new episode of House comes on right after, so I'm definitely watching that as well.

Okay the commercials weren't great but the football game sure was!! I loved how the Patriots perfect season ended just as quick as it started. My favorite commercial was the Will Farrell one where he said "Bud Light, suck one." It was comical! I also enjoyed the ugly girl and the cashew nut. The commercials have been declining in recent years though.

What was everyone else's thoughts on the game/commercials?

Just for kicks though, if you remember the bit about the old train station stairs and the remnants of the Gandy Dancers and the ferris wheel near the curly-que bridge, you might look around there while you're walking through and get some shots - just for us geeks.

Sorry but I got the post too late. We'll be back to SDC later this year though since we have season tickets.

Interesting things from my Trip:

The weather was great (when it got warmer in the afternoon) and it was a great weekend to go!

The GIANT Swing seemed a lot shorter.

I've noticed that too.  I haven't been yet this year (am hoping to visit soon) but we rode it in May and November of last year.  The ride was definitely shorter in November compared to May.  It was a warm day in November and actually more crowded when we visited in May, so I don't think weather or the number of people in the park had anything to do with it.

Maybe they fluctuate how much air is let into the tanks based on maintainence issues...

Funny how we talk about SDC even in the 'Other' categories.

Man, I've been so busy lately... I'm finding it near impossible to get everything I need to get done done - seems to be a constant theme with me over the last few months.

What type of music do you guys like to listen to? I like Christian rock mostly but I'll also listen to almost anything else with a rhythm. Except for rap and hip-hop. I'm not into that stuff.

I have very eclectic tastes. I can listen to anything from Mozart to trance to Will Smith to Aerosmith.

Will Smith is one of the only "rap" artists I can listen to, but mostly 'cause his music isn't 100% hardcore rap. I do like Eminem. I also prefer female rap artists; there's just something about the rhythm of their music and voices that I like. I really like Avril Lavigne's remix of "Girlfriend" featuring Lil' Mama.

I don't listen to as much Christian music as I used to as a kid. I do like Mercy Me, and we just recently listened to our old Margaret Becker cassette and realized just how much we liked it.

I can't listen to Mozart. Whenever I was in middle school I was required to take music class and we had to learn all about the classics. I couldn't stand any of it. Now that I'm in high school I can take whatever classes I want. Granted, I am not in music class. Will Smith is pretty good although I like his movies better.

Rock on Aerosmith! I saw Mercy Me in concert a couple years ago and they were very good and very entertaining. The Newsboys and Tobymac are also very entertaining concerts to go to.

I like contemporary and rock Christian music.  I have very eclectic tastes too, but I don't like rap/hip-hop.  My fave artists/bands would have to be Steven Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith, Switchfoot, Jars of Clay, Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns, Garth Brooks, Goo Goo Dolls, Dashboard Confessional, Jimmy Eat World, Lifehouse, Coldplay, and my all-time fave is definitely U2.

Have you guys been to any good concerts?  I've been to a lot.  My fave concerts are:  Steven Curtis Chapman (Chris Tomlin and Casting Crowns opened for him!), Goo Goo Dolls, Lifehouse (The Calling opened for them!), Journey, STYX, Coldplay, and far above all of these faves is I've seen U2 live twice!  They are definitely worth every penny and put on a transcendental, spiritual show.  It really takes your heart and soul to another level seeing U2 in concert.

I have seen TobyMac in concert three times. He puts on one of the best shows, if not the best. It is close up there to the Newsboys. I enjoy Newsboys concerts but I can't really just sit there and listen to their music you know what I mean? I have also seen The Afters, Mercy Me, Jeremy Camp, Rebecca St. James, Family Force Five (twice ROCK ON!)

Also on Labor Day I went to some music festival at Starlight Theatre in Kansas City. I can't remember the name of the festival right now though. Hawk Nelson, FF5, TobyMac, and Superchick were all there, plus a lot more.

I'm also embarassed to say that when I was younger I saw N*sync in concert. Sadly.

I went to a Steven Curtis Chapman/Mercy Me Christmas concert a few years ago; they were promoting Chronicles of Narnia like CRAZY. It was a fun concert.

The only other concerts I've been to were the Monkees in the mid '90s and a Beatles tribute band.

I have seen a bunch of shows. The ones that immediately come to mind are Ben Folds, Bob Dylan, The Black Crowes, Blues Traveler, Cheap Trick, Dave Matthews Band (three times), Sheryl Crow, Sixpence None the Richer (three times), REM, Radiohead and even Van Halen (back in the very early 90's) and the Spice Girls (in the mid-90's). I also saw a TON of Christian shows when I lived in Nashville.

That's one thing I really miss about living in Nashville.

I'm planning on being at the midnight showing for Indiana Jones. I would be for Narnia, 'cept they don't have any midnighters scheduled around here last I checked.

The only other midnight movie this year for me will be Harry Potter in November. There ARE plenty of movies I'm definitely wanting to see this year, though; it's a rare year when there are more than five movies that catch my attention in a whole year.

Wow, you saw the Monkees in the mid '90s?!?  I had NO idea they were still touring then.  The one time I really remember seeing any of the Monkees around then was when Davy Jones guested on an episode of Boy Meets World in the mid '90s and he and some of the Monkees performed at the end of the episode.  I think their old manager had a cameo as well.

I guess it's not that weird that the Monkees were touring in the mid '90s, considering that New Kids On the Block is now reuniting...  It's sad to say, but I don't think bands like that will ever go away.  :-\

I think it was in '96. And it was actually three of the four Monkees; Mike didn't tour with them. We got to meet Davey, Peter, and Mickey the day before when they had an autograph session at our Suncoast store at the mall (which is no longer there). They were all very nice.

I can't believe that New Kids is reuniting. Of course, I was surprised when I found out they were trying to put together a new Menudo. I guess you just have to expect ANYTHING to happen these days.

I'm not into Harry Potter. I never really have been. I read the first book and I didn't really like it.

It'd be really cool to go to a midnight show. I've never been to one before mostly because, I don't know if our theater offers them. Another movie that comes out here in a couple weeks is Made of Honor. It looks pretty funny. Romantic comedy I guess is what you would call it.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: Joy on April 16, 2008, 11:54:42 PM
If you have an AMC theater, you have a pretty good chance of having a midnight showing. It all depends on the movie; typically it's the big summer blockbuster type fare, like Pirates of the Caribbean or big comic book movies.

I've been to, oh let's see, eight midnight showings (maybe nine, but it's difficult to keep track); all three Star Wars prequels, the 3rd through 5th Harry Potter movies, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Midnight showings are a very unique and fun experience. When waiting in line for the second Star Wars prequel, that day/evening was my birthday. So we brought cookies and games and had fun with the people in line with us. When we were all seated in the theater and close to showtime, the theater manager came in to give us the typical "this showing is sold out, please move towards the center to make room for people still arrive" speech. After that he announced, to a sold out crowd of my fellow Star Wars fans, that it was my birthday and had everyone sing Happy Birthday to me. It turns out my stepbro and my dad had set that up. It was embarrassing at first (I'm not used to being in the spotlight), but I really enjoyed being sung to by my fellow fans.

As for Harry Potter... well, if you watch the first and second movies, then there's no real need to read those two first books as they cover them pretty exhaustively (which makes for a slightly tedious movie, but good summary of the books). Starting with the third book and on, things really start to get going and each book matures with its audience. By the seventh book, you're deep into young-adult territory rather than being another "children's book". The last two movies have been rated PG-13; I'm expecting this next one (which is the second to last) to be PG-13 as well. They're splitting the seventh book into two movies so that they don't have to cut out any important information. Depending upon how faithful they are and where they decide to do the split, I could see the first part being PG-13 and the second part getting VERY close to an R.

I didn't become a Harry Potter fan until I was already 18 years old; I had never seen the movies, but saw the trailer for the third and thought it looked interesting. So in my second semester of my senior year in high school, I read all the books (that were published at that time) and instantly fell for them. I've stopped re-reading the first two; they haven't aged as well as the rest. But if you can get past those first two (either by reading or by watching the movies), I can say that the rest of the series really matures well.

I like Harry Potter and Star Wars a lot.  I've seen all the HP movies except Order of the Phoenix.  I suppose I'll see it eventually.  I've read all of the books, each at least twice.  I was happily surprised that I wasn't let down at all with The Deathly Hallows.  It was a great way to end a great series, and I'm glad to hear that Rowling is moving on and writing two novels right now (neither related to HP at all).

I'm looking forward to the new Indiana Jones movie and Wall-E; to a lesser extent, Prince Caspian as well.  I'm not big about seeing movies in theaters anymore.  The last one I saw in theaters was Ratatouille in July of last year (before that it was Superman Returns in July of 2006).  I've been wanting to see Grace Is Gone (starring John Cusack) and have marked on my calendar that it's coming to DVD on May 27.

The last movie I watched (if you can call it a movie; it's actually a Star Wars variety show  :P) was The Star Wars Holiday Special.  I can't believe I watched it all the way through (at least I didn't pay anything to see it, except that I now have lost 2 hours of my life that I'll never get back  :-[).  I really wish I hadn't watched it.  Awful doesn't even begin to describe it.  The Star Wars Holiday Special IS the Dark Side.  Stay away!  :o

^I don't think I could do it again.  I was completely sober, and I've heard people say you can watch it drunk, but I honestly don't think intoxicants would help.  They try to knock you out right at the beginning with 10 minutes of Chewbacca's family interacting at their house, speaking in grunts.  No English for 10 minutes, and no subtitles either.  C-3PO shows up at the Wookiee Life Day Ceremony at the end (the weird bright star space scene) and interprets what's going on.  I remember thinking, "Where was he at the beginning for the 10 minute scene with Chewie's family?  Really could've used him!"  The recycled Star Wars footage is kinda funny.  In a painful way.  Especially the redubbed 30 second scene with Vader and the commander (discarded SW footage); that's all you see of Vader for the special and they list him as a "star" in the opening credits.  After redubbing the commander's lines (his lips movements definitely don't match the dialogue) Vader responds with this classic line:  "I want the rebels located and identified if it means searching every household in the system."  And Carrie Fisher looks drugged throughout the entire thing.

Bottom line:  Stay away from this train wreck!

I just wanted you guys to know that as of tomorrow, our cable services are being suspended (we're two months late), and I'm not sure when we'll be able to get them re-established. Since we're in danger of being evicted (we're in pretty dire straits financially; but hopefully God will be on our side as he has many, many times before), it's possible my absence from the internet will be even longer.

I'm going to try getting to the library at least once a week, but can't guarantee it.

I've got a job I'm applying for in the next day or two, so cross your fingers; this one looks like something that might actually be the right kind of job for me.

Well, until next time...

Don't worry, I'm gonna try to get to the library when I can. I know my mom wants to stay connected as often as possible, too.

And this isn't going to keep me from posting pics once I can get down to SDC. My sister, friend, and I were planning for this next Wednesday for our daytrip, but looks like we'd be rained out. So we're gonna aim for the 30th. I have JUST enough money (ie $40) in my account to put in for my part of the gas and food.

So, pictures WILL be coming, no matter what. I shall not be swayed! LOL

Does anyone here like to read? I LOVE to read. If I think a book is good enough I can read it in a few hours. I had a goal to re-read all my books on my bookshelf over the summer but that is impossible due to football, plus that would be over 100 books, so I have changed that to just like re-reading my top 34 books. (They are only from two authors)

What are some of your favorite books?
Mine are anything by Gordon Korman and the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson.

^I love to read as well!  Growing up, I loved R.L. Stine's books (the Goosebumps series and Fear Street series).  I also started reading Stephen King when I was in 6th(!) grade (perhaps a little too young since he is pretty intense, but oh well).  I still love his books, and I love reading J.K. Rowling and C.S. Lewis.  I also recently read Jon Krakauer's books "Into the Wild" (about Chris McCandless's adventures in Alaska) and "Into Thin Air:  A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster", both of which I highly recommend.  I also highly recommend Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None", probably the best mystery novel ever written; and William Peter Blatty's novel "The Exorcist" (if possible, better than the movie!).  (Side Note:  If you like "The Exorcist" check out Thomas Allen's book "Possessed: The True Story of An Exorcism".  It is the only diary that exists of an actual exorcism that was performed in America (from 1949); it was kept by a priest who assisted with the exorcism.  Be warned: It is a harrowing read and will keep you up at night).  My most recent read is Dennis Lehane's book "Shutter Island", which is a very good mystery/thriller.  I am currently reading Agatha Christie's novel "Crooked House", which will be closely followed by Shirley Jackson's classic haunted house novel "The Haunting of Hill House".

Can you tell I'm a life-long reader?  :)

I still love his books, and I love reading J.K. Rowling and C.S. Lewis.

I just recently finished reading The Chronicles of Narnia a couple months ago actually. I read the series so I would understand the movies better plus, I like to compare the books to the movies. I find it interesting to see which parts the movie left out on. Just so you all know, the book is always better than the movie they come out with. I'm not much of a mystery fan and that is most of the books you seem to read sdcforever, lol.

Right now for my English class I'm required to read To Kill a Mockingbird. I just can't get into it at all! It is a really boring book to me. My best friend is telling me it is a classic and all that (she is kind of a nerd  ;D) but it is pretty boring to me.

I tried reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer a while ago but I couldn't get into it. My junior year I'll be required to read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn so I can give you a good book review then Joy.  ;)

If you guys haven't read the Maximum Ride series I highly suggest it!! They are AMAZINGLY AWESOME!!

I will admit that I have not read the full version of Tom Sawyer, just an adapted Illustrated Classics. I read Huck Finn in my junior year and really enjoyed it. We even did a mock trial concerning keeping the book in a school library; thankfully, I was on the side wanting to keep the book.

Back in '06, I went on a Twain binge. I like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, but my favorites ended up being The Diaries of Adam and Eve and No. 44 The Mysterious Stranger (the University of California Press '80s publication). Tom Sawyer Abroad was fun (and is also the book that the Skychase Balloons tie in with), and Lee Nelson's finishing of Twain's Tom Sawyer & Huck Finn Among the Indians was a good read, too. A nice ending for Huck.

I highly recommend No. 44 The Mysterious Stranger, but make sure it's the Univ. of CA Press edition. Any other rendition of Mysterious Stranger is actually a compilation of three different unfinished stories that Twain's biographer hacked together.

In other news... I'm also a HUGE JK Rowling fan. I own all the Harry Potter books and look forward to any other books she writes.

Two of my most favorite novels are Shepherd of the Hills and Christy. Both are wonderful tales of life in the mountains at the turn of the century and both really make you want to go to the mountains and never come back. :D

If you can get past the first two books, then you're home free. Starting with the third, the series really takes giant leaps. I rank the first book as my least favorite of the seven.

In fact, you could even just watch the first two movies, then jump into reading on the third.

I have to agree with that, Joy.  Interestingly, my favorite HP movie is the second one because it's so true to the book.  The only thing I regret about books 4-7 is that Rowling's editors get really lazy; the editing is wonderful on books 1-3 though.  (I'm serious about the editing in the later books.  Read them and you'll see that Hermione is always "crying" and Harry is always "angry", etc.  Some other descriptive words would be nice to convey the characters' emotions).

How do you guys feel about the current state of the movie business?  IMO, it's creatively-challenged.  How many sequels/franchises (Shrek 18, Spiderman 22, anyone?) and remakes (The Birds remake-2009, Starfighter-2010 remake of The Last Starfighter, anyone?) do we need?  Remakes and sequels abound!  The list goes on and on for each genre, but I'm a big horror fan.  I was apalled when they remade Halloween.  Upcoming horror remakes are due for My Bloody Valentine, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Friday the 13th, and The Day the Earth Stood Still, to only name a few.  I wish Hollywood would develop more unique and creative wide-release material!

^I hate horror movies. I get really scared and I become a real baby when it comes to that stuff.

As for sequels and things, if done right they can be a great thing. Like, Back to the Future trilogy, Star Wars (the earlier movies were better but the 3rd movie was really good), Indiana Jones (I can't wait for the fourth one), Shrek trilogy, etc.

But some movies are ruined once the sequel comes out. Disney has ruined a lot of movies like Lilo and Stitch, Little Mermaid, Lion King, etc. The Sandlot is a great movie but the sequel just ruined it for me.

I think if you can bring back the same characters with the same personality and as good of a plot for the first, you can make a successful sequel. If you have to put in a lot of new characters (or have all new characters) it won't do as good.

The only good sequel to an animated movie that Disney has put out was Cinderella III: A Twist in Time. The first sequel felt like it could've been a TV movie, but the third was really quite original and I really liked it.

I am SOOOOO excited about Indiana Jones IV. I plan to be there at midnight in my official Lucasfilm-licensed Indiana Jones fedora. And that reminds me, even SDC is getting in on the Indy action; they had a whole rack in the Hospitality House full of baseball caps and fedora-type hats that were licensed Indy merchandise.

I am excited about Indiana Jones IV, but sequels like Night at the Museum 2 and Hellboy 2 are completely unnecessary.  And another Hulk film?  Come on!  As for Shia Labeouf's role, remember the plot and characters are under double lock and key!  No one not affiliated with the project really knows what character (other than his name) he portrays yet (those who do are under penalty of death if they talk  ;)).

I think if you can bring back the same characters with the same personality and as good of a plot for the first, you can make a successful sequel. If you have to put in a lot of new characters (or have all new characters) it won't do as good.

I think this is where a lot of sequels fall short.  They bring back the same characters, but also a very similar plot to the first film, so when you go see it you feel like you've basically just seen the first movie twice!  They seem to think that a plot as good as the first film means it basically has to be the same plot but in a different setting from the first film.

Last night I went to see The Chronicles of Narnia with three of my friends. It was extremely well done!! There are a lot more fight/battle scenes and it was very well directed. I can't decide if I like the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe better though. I thought in the first one they showed us more of the characters but the second was more of an action film which I like. Edmund has a very reduced role in the movie.

My Grade: A

Next week I am going to go to the midnight show of Indiana Jones IV. It will be a good way to kick off the summer seeing as Wednesday is when school gets out.

I will be seeing "Prince Caspian" some time soon.  I also plan to see "Indiana Jones IV", but I'm really looking forward to "Wall-E"!  :D  I can't help it, I love Pixar movies!

"Indiana Jones IV" has a lot of pressure to be a great movie, there's so much hype!  It'll be interesting to see how it holds up to the hype.

Yeah I saw a preview for Wall-E. My friends laughed at me when I told them I wanted to see it though, lol. I don't know. I probably won't end up watching it.

All of the Indiana Jones movies have been on TV a lot lately. I just hope this one is as well done. It will be weird seeing an action hero with gray hair I'll admit. I hope they don't ruin the first three!!

I just saw Prince Caspian last night and thought it was pretty good, though it lacks the charm of the first in the series. There were a lot of weird religious allusions as well, seemed to have made a lot more sense in the books than they did in the movie.

I don't think I'll be seeing too many other movies this year though unless I can catch them at a discount theater. The only major theater near me now charges $8 a pop, and I can't subjugate myself to those prices just to sit in a chair and watch a big TV for a couple of hours. Maybe I will for Wall-E, but I don't know if I can sit through the preview for that chihuahua movie again.

$8 is how much it costs at my theater as well. Recently I saw Made of Honor, Prince Caspian, and I'll be going to Indiana Jones IV. After that, I'd say I'll have awhile before I see another movie in the theaters seeing as I have a busy summer planned and it is pretty expensive. I haven't bought any concessions at the movies though as an effort to save money.

What was the chihuahua movie though?

^It's "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" with Drew Barrymore, Salma Hayek, and Jamie Lee Curtis.  Basically, a Beverly Hills chihuahua gets lost while on vacation in Mexico and needs help finding the way home.  The chihuahuas talk.  It'll be out September 26.  I have, thankfully, not been subjected to a preview yet.  I'd better brace myself for one if I'm going to see any movies this summer, though.

I saw "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" Monday.  I must say I loved it!  It was fun and had great action set pieces and a lot of humor (one of my favorite aspects of the Indy films).  Harrison Ford really showed up (lately it seems he's "phoned in" most of his performances).  It seemed his heart was really in this.  I know reviews are decidedly mixed.  I feel it's unfair to compare this one to the first three.  IMO, it's all about perspective.  If this one had come first then people would probably say that "Last Crusade" just couldn't measure up, for example.  I felt the plot was engaging and the performances were really good.  Has anyone else seen it?  If so, what are your thoughts?

^I saw it on Friday. I don't really know what to think of it to tell you the truth. I do agree Harrison Ford gave a stellar performance. Shia as Mutt was all right. I liked how they brought back Marion. The worst part of the movie was the whole plot. Crystal Skulls? Come on, they could've done better. And I didn't really like the ending of the plot (not the movie, I liked how the movie ended but I won't say because I don't want to ruin anything for the rest who haven't seen it). The whole alien thing, meh, it wasn't for me. Cate Blanchett was very good in her role. The movie also started out kind of slow. It was all right. I know it can't really be compared to the first three but when you do compare them, it is definitely not the best.

Rating: ***

^I liked the plot, but I think it's because I came with some reservations.  I knew that the script had gone through many, many drafts by several writers, so I knew it would be patched together, so to speak.  So I wasn't expecting a story that would blow my mind.  IMO, it was a good plot considering all of the drafts and ideas that were put into it.

^I didn't know they had more than one writer doing it. Next time I watch it (which will probably be when it comes out on DVD) I'm going to watch it with more of an open mind and not compare it to the first three movies whatsoever.

^Jeb Stuart wrote two drafts in 1995, which contained plot elements that are still featured in the movie.  Others who contributed drafts:  Jeffrey Boam, M. Night Shyamalan, Frank Darabont, and Jeff Nathanson.  Finally David Koepp (the only credited screenwriter for the film) meshed all of these drafts together into one screenplay, after 12 years(!) of rejected drafts!

My computer got a virus. I've been working on trying to fix it for the past two days but my computer is pretty old and nothing is working. I'm going to be getting a new computer soon though (I hope). I am using a different computer to type this by the way.

We are going to Pennsylvania here pretty quick. We are going to be at Hersheypark and we'll be near Gettysburg on July 4th. I think it'll be pretty fun. Then we'll be down in Tennessee for a week (no Dollywood). Needless to say, I might not be on here very much unless I can get a new laptop and hook up to the internet in our hotel. Just keeping you all updated...

Has anyone noticed that ABC Family's "Salute to America" is focused on a marathon of Harry Potter movies?  Isn't that strangely ironic?  To celebrate our independence from England, they're showing movies about British wizards.  It would be OK to show the movies, but to bill it as a salute to America?  Really?

Lol, yeah I saw that today and I also thought it was weird. They need to show more of an American or patriotic movie than Harry Potter...

Now that it's almost July 4th what are some of your favorite "patriotic" American movies? I can't think of many right now except for The Patriot.

^Here are a few: To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), The Great Escape (1963), All the President's Men (1976), The Music Man (1962), The Stars and Stripes Forever (1952), The Fighting Sullivans (1944), Johnny Tremain (1957), Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), 1776 (1972), and Rocky (1975).  There just aren't many recent patriotic films other than Independence Day (1996) and, as you mentioned, The Patriot (2000).

And, just for kicks, if you're looking for a very anti-Vietnam War and anti-patriotic film, look no further than Born on the Fourth of July (1989).

I haven't looked to see what TCM will be playing on the fourth.  That's usually the place to look.

I have to put my vote in for The Patriot.  At first, I thought it was just a movie made for the blood, but after further consideration I realized it was about a man who just wanted to be a dad, but who had to fight - it was about an ordinary man doing extraordinary things (a favorite theme of mine).  Mel did a good job with that one.

How did you all spend the 4th of July? I was in Philadelphia where the country started! It was so neat. We went to a huge fireworks show at night (I like Magic Kingdom's better though). During the day, we toured historic Philadelphia which is really amazing. Great architecture. The Liberty Bell is awesome. We wanted to go in Independence Hall but it was a two hour wait. It was a lot of fun. Hershey was also amazing. We did that July 3rd I think.

I can post pics later but I'm on the hotel computer right now. Still gone.

I like those movies as well!  Definitely popcorn films.  You have to shut your brain off and just let it sink in, the plots are so outrageous!  They do a good job of throwing historical tidbits in there and twisting them around a little for the treasure hunts.  I read that they want to do a third movie, which might tell us what exactly is on page 47...

Also they have said that it is getting harder and harder to find enough US history for a good third movie (we are a very young country) so this next film will probably be more like "International Treasure".  Rumors are floating around that it will have the Gates family traveling to Easter Island to look for the lost city of Atlantis and the perfect, clean power source which was supposed to have powered the sunken city.  The family's goal is to use it to end global warming.  Sounds interesting enough to me! :)

The National Treasure movies are great thriller/suspense movies, and I also hope they revive interest in history... so that people will learn how utterly full of cow patties the movies were!  ;D

We spent the weekend watching the HBO series "John Adams" on DVD. I really enjoyed how the heroes' flaws aren't masked. The founding fathers had lumps, bumps, and warts -- there's nothing wrong with admitting it. They shouldn't be cleansed of their sins for having founded this nation, nor should they be burned at the stake for being less than perfect. They were what they were, and I appreciate that they left us something better than themselves.

As Dr. Franklin famously said, "...a republic, madam, if you can keep it."

I fear we've already lost it, but I continue to fight for it.

Anyone here go to many concerts? I just got back from a mewithoutYou show, which was absolutely amazing; probably the best show I've been to.

mewithoutYou is one of those bands that come along every blue moon and just blow you away with their uniqueness and their raw talent. Their shows are so full of energy and so artistic. They don't just sing songs, they really dive into it all. People bring food to their shows to share with everyone else, and they always pass out instruments to the crowd so everyone can join in. It's a really different experience, though it looks like some type of crazy hindu festival.

If they ever come by your area, be sure to go - there's no other band that can offer that kind of experience. They are very religious, but in a good way.

^I actually don't care much for mewithoutYou's music, but I'm glad you had a good time at their concert.  I do like some Christian music, like Switchfoot, Jars of Clay, and Future of Forestry.

I have been to many, many concerts.  Here are some highlights.  Growing up we used to go to the ol' Route 66 Music Festival in Joplin, MO.  So I got to see some old school acts, like Kool and the Gang, Journey, REO Speedwagon, STYX, Joan Jett, and Foreigner.  I saw Johnny Cash when he came to Branson in the mid-90s.  I've also been to some contemporary shows.  I've seen Goo Goo Dolls, Vanessa Carlton, Third Eye Blind, Rilo Kiley, Steven Curtis Chapman, Casting Crowns, Chris Tomlin, and Nichole Nordeman.  I've also seen Phantom Planet, Sting, Lifehouse, The Calling, and Kanye West.  The greatest live show I've ever seen is U2, and I've seen them twice.  They are worth every penny!  They're coming out with a new album in October and planning a world tour starting next spring.  If they come to within reasonable driving distance and you're lucky enough to get tickets, definitely go see U2.  It is a spiritual experience to say the least.

Ooh, I hope not.  I already have the next installment written in my head - how Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to look for treasure hidden by Napolean, but under the guise of searching for a northwest passage.  Clues at Monticello, etc. - perfect for page 47.  Making an international treasure is fine, but only with the American history theme.  It would be great to include other generations of the Gates family; aren't there some books about them?

^Yeah but maybe they are trying to give everyone different sounds. Besides, you don't have to go to all the concerts, you get to choose which one you would like to go to. I've already seen Hawk Nelson and Mercy Me in concert and I've never heard of Tenth Avenue North so it should be fun. I'm bringing a friend and everything...

Now that I look at Tenth Avenue North's website I know who they are. I just didn't know their name or what songs they sang. That is usually how it goes with me.

Also, pictures of our trip may have to wait. My computer still has a virus and I'm on a different computer right now. If I can't get my computer fixed then I'll just upload them onto here.

I went to the midnight showing of The Dark Knight last night (I mean this morning). It was amazing! It was the best theatre experience I've ever had (not meaning the best movie I've ever seen). I went with four of my friends and it was just a lot of fun. There were people in Batman costumes and people cheered and screamed, it was just exciting. And I didn't get home 'til 3 in the morning.

Heath Ledger gave a stellar performance as the Joker. He made the character funny yet scary at the same time. I'd suggest this movie to anyone who is in the mood for a thrilling action packed movie. It was the best movie I've seen all year.

Not really my kind of movie, but it looks like a wild ride.  The last movie we saw was WALL-E, which was really well presented, humorous, action-packed, and beautiful with its inclusion of the Hello, Dolly scene and song.  If you can see through the green-preaching, the movie is just good story-telling.  Pixar is at its best when the dialog is left out, and for the first quarter of the movie, they did just that - very creative.

I just saw "The Dark Knight", Coaster.  It was good, but it was really long.  The movie just kept going faster and faster with only a few speed bumps slowing it a bit at times, which kind of annoyed and overwhelmed me.  They didn't do a lot of character development, it was just action on top of action.  And there were way too many monologues about good vs. evil and good vs. evil inside the same person, etc.  Heath Ledger's performance was great, and towered over the film.  I appreciated his performance most because he provided nearly all of the comic relief (Alfred had only a couple of amusing lines).  My biggest peeve is the fact that Christian Bale doesn't make a good Batman, in my opinion.  The role is too big for him (I felt this way with "Batman Begins" too).  His hoarse voice for Batman really distracts me.

Despite what I wrote above, I did enjoy the movie overall.  It has great set pieces and some good action (but too much, in my opinion).  I think it just takes itself too seriously.  And it's overrated.  It's certainly not one of the greatest movies of all time.  But it is one of the best movies of the summer.

I saw "Dark Knight" last Wednesday night, the 9 pm showing at the IMAX with my daughter.  There was a long line of ticket holders waiting to get in; I stood there about 50 minutes myself and the theater was already more than half full when I passed through the door.  While in line, I chatted with a nice couple from Chicago (held my place in line while I went to get popcorn), and I ended up giving them a couple of comp passes to SDC even though they're Cubs fans.

The movie was awesome on the IMAX screen, and even though it was shot in 35mm, it still filled over 70% of the screen.  We enjoyed the film immensely.  I didn't really notice the length because the action kept me occupied and my mind from wandering.  I go to see a movie as an escape, so as long as it keeps my attention, I don't worry too much about character development.  They just have to be believable or at least credible, not deep.  If I want great character development, I read a book.  That's not to say that movies cannot achieve it.  I just don't expect it in a movie of this type.

I thought the performances of both the leads were pretty good.  In comparing the two however, I have to say that it is so much easier for the "bad" guy to deliver an intriguing performance than it is for the "good" guy.  There's so much more material to work with, and the fascination with what makes the evil guy tick is so much more intense.  What can make a good guy interesting however is seeing him attempt to keep an "evil side" under lock and key.  So, I appreciated both performances.

That being said, I was extremely annoyed by Heath Ledger's performance.  It wasn't original by any means.  I saw Jack Nicholson in every line delivery, every mannerism, right down to the lip-smacking.  Very disappointing.  All I had heard was how great Heath Ledger was, so this was a big let-down.

But, being able to put that aside, I really enjoyed the film and would recommend it to a friend.

^^I do agree that the movie was really long. (Try going when it is midnight and the movie is delayed from starting for forty minutes). I personally liked all the action. The stunts were great (especially the semi truck flipping over) and the movie was better than Batman Begins, which I actually saw after The Dark Knight. But in my opinion, Christian Bale makes a pretty good Batman. His voice as Batman actually sold me on it. But all this stuff about him assaulting his mom and sister lately, has me wondering about his off screen personality.

^I watched some of the first Batman on tv a couple days after The Dark Knight. In my opinion, Heath Ledger's performance was ten times better than Jack Nicholson. Although, that may be because I come from the generation of special effects and big time sets which, of course, The Dark Knight had. The make-up smearing off his face and the lip smacking was all really cool.

"Why so serious?!"

^All right, let's have some fun!  The third Batman film--the villians.  Obviously, the Joker should return, which raises some complications.  The Joker is Batman's greatest villian, he can't just be in one film of a rebooted franchise.  He'll have to be recast.  I would like to see The Riddler make an appearance.  Oh (I won't give anything away for those who haven't seen the film), but the person who we're made to think is dead at the end of the film, I don't think he's dead.  I think he'll make an appearance in the next film.  There are also rumors that Catwoman may appear in the next movie as well.  Your thoughts?  Who would you like to see in the next Batman movie?  Who wouldn't you like to see?  I personally hope they never introduce the Penguin.  But, since they seem to use at least two villians in every film, they may have to introduce the Penguin if they make a fourth movie.

^I do hope they bring the Joker back. There'd be huge debates after the movie about who was the better Joker (Heath or whoever played the new one). As for the person who is supposedly dead, I believe he is dead. But who knows in today's movie world. Pirates of the Caribbean surprised me A LOT with how many people they brought back from the dead.

I read on IMDB that Bale, Caine, and Oldman are all under contract for a third movie, so there will be a third. As for the villain, I'd also like to see the Riddler and the Joker. If not both, the Penguin would also be all right with me.

I just downloaded Jars of Clay's new five song EP "Closer", and it's fantastic!  There are three new songs ("Closer", "Safe to Land", and "Prisoner of Hope") and two new wicked versions of "Love Song for a Savior" and "Flood".  You can check it out on iTunes; it's a precursor to their new album that's coming out in early 2009.  They've changed their sound again, and it's very infectious and great. ;D

I discovered that Robert Downey Jr. has his own music album. I checked it out from the library, and it's amazing! Though I have to admit, it was a little strange to sit there listening to "Tony Stark" sing... LOL

He's also got a couple of songs on the Ally McBeal soundtrack "For Once In My Life".

If anyone is interested in this type of thing, there is a really good speaker scheduled for tonight at the Coleman Theater in Miami, OK.  His topic is Creationism, and he will be putting dinosaurs and other things into the creation timeline.  He has a talent for putting a lot of difficult information into words and pictures we can all understand.  Last night, he spoke on Atheism's Attack on America and kept us captivated for 90 minutes.  The presentations tonight, which include a quick-moving PowerPoint, begins at 6:30.

I'd really love to go to that also.  One of these days I'm going to make it out to that new creation museum in Kentucky.  It just really saddens me that so much of America has fallen for the evolution myth, and the fact that the schools are forced to teach it and exclude the Bible.

It was awesome.  He proved a six day creation, the effects of the flood, and so much more.  Using science and the Bible side by side all along.  If you ever here of Brad Harrub coming close to you, go see him.  He spoke for over two hours tonight and it seemed like about 45 minutes.  You can also look him up on the web.

^I'll keep an eye out for him.  I wish more people would realize that the Bible/religion and science must coexist.  It's not an either/or thing--you can't have science without religion.  It doesn't make sense.  Even scientists say that an omnipresent being (God) had to have initiated the creation of the universe.  It couldn't have happened all by itself.  This either/or thing with science and religion reminds me of how so many people separate their everyday lives from their prayer lives.  You can't just set aside one or two hours a week for church, then forget about it the rest of the week.  God has to be present in every aspect of your life.  Your relationship with God has to be an all-the-time thing, or it can't grow and flourish like it should.

It was awesome.  He proved a six day creation, the effects of the flood, and so much more.

Not to detract from your discussion, but I will only note that "convinced" does not equal "proved".

I like the version from Good Omens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Omens):

Current theories on the creation of the Universe state that, if it was created at all and didn't just start, as it were, unofficially, it came into being between ten and twenty thousand million years ago. By the same token the earth itself is generally supposed to be about four and a half thousand million years old.

These dates are incorrect.

Medieval Jewish scholars put the date of the Creation at 3760 B.C. Greek Orthodox theologians put Creation as far back as 5508 B.C.

These suggestions are also incorrect.

Archbishop James Usher (1580–1656) published Annales Veteris et Novi Testamenti in 1654, which suggested that the Heaven and the Earth were created in 4004 B.C. One of his aides took the calculation further, and was able to announce triumphantly that the Earth was created on Sunday the 21st of October, 4004 B.C., at exactly 9:00 A.M., because God liked to get work done early in the morning while he was feeling fresh.

This too was incorrect. By almost a quarter of an hour.

The whole business with the fossilized dinosaur skeletons was a joke the paleontologists haven't seen yet.

This proves two things:

Firstly, that God moves in extremely mysterious, not to say, circuitous ways. God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players,* to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infi nite stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.

Secondly, the Earth's a Libra.

I'll take that.  Obviously he hasn't proven it to most people in the world.

The "convincing" is pretty thorough, through evidence of population growth rates, growth of the Sahara desert, lack of a larger Mississippi delta, fossil data that's been left out of the evolutionist textbooks that are prevalent in schools at all levels, fossil, archaeological, and anthropological evidence that shows geological timelines to be severely misconstrued, dinosaur soft tissue that somehow has not decayed after all those millions of years, ice age evidence in the glacial record, evidence through the results of the Mount St. Helens Eruption, the formation of canyons, including the Grand Canyon, and much more.  He also described all the "missing links" that have been put forth and hypothesized.  I don't want this to become a discussion of the issue, however; I just want to encourage people, whether Christian, Agnostic, Atheist, or just people with questions, to go see this guy if you get the chance.  He's definitely well-versed and unafraid of hard questions or even accusations and challenges.

betamike came out to the park today and stopped by to see me at the Opera House.  What a nice guy he is.  I was really impressed that he took the time to come by and see me.  An usher came in to tell me I had visitors and I thought it was my mother and father or something like that.  I walked out the door and saw two people whom I didn't recognize, and then he said "Hi, I'm betamike."  What a surprise!  He was with his mother.  I took them inside the OH and showed him what we were working on-- turnover from the magic show to our next production- "Headin West."  We chatted for 20 or 30 minutes.

Thanks!  I've got mixed feelings about this season.  The Cards are doing much better than they were projected to do which is great.  On the other hand, that just gets our hopes up for another post season appearance, and I'm afraid they just don't quite have the pieces to make it.  They seem to be fading a bit.  It's not out of the realm of possibilities, but it doesn't look good.  I look for good things for next year though, when we have Carp and Waino back.

We'll get Waino back this year, I'm sure.  Carp, I'm doubtful about that.  Our bullpen has obviously been the weakest link.  I think Izzy might be done after this year.  We'll be dumping a lot of salary money once this year is over, so we'll be able to re-sign a lot of players.  Ludwick is arbitration eligible after this season, and that will be interesting to watch.  I'm excited about next year, but I feel we need to get an impact bat at the SS or 2B position.  I wonder if we are overvaluing our prospects...are they really as good as the front office believes?  Certainly the other front offices don't think so.  The only one they're really excited about is Rasmus.  We covet almost all of our prospects.  Next year will be interesting, especially with our starting rotation.  Who's in and who's out?  Will we re-sign Lohse in the off-season?  His value has been decreasing lately as his ERA goes up.

Dunno about Carp. It's a shame, he was such a promising young pitcher out of NH.

Just so long as Isringhausen goes, I'll be happy. The most frustrating pitcher I've ever watched. Flashes of brilliance and perfect execution, separated by chokes and blown saves.

Any minor league fans? We have an independent team here, the Texarkana Gunslingers (http://www.texarkanaprobaseball.com). This is their first season, but they're in second place going into the final weekend homestand. They stand a good chance of winning the league championship. We lost our most devastating closer to the Astros organization, though. If you see Jack "JT" Tilghman playing in the majors someday, just remember that I saw him first.  ;D

We've got the Springfield Cardinals 40 miles away.  They're the AA affiliate of the Cardinals.  I usually get up to see them 3 or 4 times a season.  I've seen some of the guys who are up at the big team now.

Carp went on the DL again today.  I guess his triceps strain was a little worse than they originally thought.  As for Izzy, I have to agree it's time to let him go.  It seems like for the last 3 or 4 seasons, he makes the end of the game just a little more "exciting" than I would like it to be.  And this year, well... he's completely lost it.  But...Perez has been looking real good.  I saw him in Springfield a couple of years ago; he was lights out.  I think, for better or for worse, let him be the closer for the rest of the season.

Your wife's a Cub fan, huh.  Don't tell me... you married her because she had a great looking boat?  You know...some of those congenital defects can be corrected with surgery.  Seriously, I'm sure she's a real fine lady.  I guess I'm lucky that my wife is more fanatical about the Cards than I am.  She doesn't have a boat though. :'(

^I'm originally from Springfield, so I have been to several Springfield Cardinals games.  It's cool to see the players starting out, and then see them join the Cards and play in the big leagues.  Hammons Field is a nice venue too.

I think it was inevitable for Carp to go on the DL.  Like LaRussa said, 15 days is the earliest he'd be able to start again (when you count being able to play catch two or three days from now and then progressing to throwing from a mound again) so they might as well have put him on the DL.  Plus, I think they're bringing up Brian Barton again if they haven't already.  This frees up a roster spot for him too.  (Why they didn't apply this logic to Ankiel, I wish I knew.  He should've gone on the 15 day DL with that abdominal strain).

As for Perez, he looks great now that he developed his slider more while he was in Memphis.  He's our closer now, in my opinion.

We looked terrible today.  How many times now have we gotten to 14 games over .500?  Why can't we ever get over that hump to 15 games over?

I watched most of the Dodgers/Brewers game today on TBS.  Man, that was exciting stuff!  Heartbreaking for the Brewers, of course.  To tie it up by scoring four runs in the ninth, only to lose it in the bottom of the ninth on a walkoff homerun!  I'm not shedding any tears for them, though.  We didn't lose any ground in the wildcard race! :D

^It's true.  I've noticed that as well.  What frustrates me more is the fact that we keep beating ourselves.  Errors, leaving guys on base, terrible at-bats with runners in scoring position, and bad baserunning.

It's really sickening isn't it.  At the AS break, we were right in the thick of things, leading the wild card and close on the heals of the ...ahemmm....for the division lead.  Now a little more than an month later, we're slipping out of even wild card contention.  Haven't been able to use Carp and Waino like we thought we might, and timely hitting is non-existent.  There's still a chance for post season play, but it's quickly dwindling to between slim and none

Bright side-- Wainwright looked very good tonight.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: sdcforever on September 03, 2008, 10:51:43 AM
^He did look very good tonight (I don't think I've ever seen his curve look that good before), and so did our offense for the (gasp!) second game in a row!

Carp looked good in relief.  It's nice to see him hitting 94 with his fastball.  We picked up a game on the Brewers for the wild card.

As for the Small Bears, worry is kicking in, I think.  They've now lost four in a row, at home, no less.  And Big Z is being examined today.  He looked bad last night in his 5 innings, 86 pitch, appearance.  He was pitching on seven days of rest, so I think it might be more than arm fatigue.  Quietly the club also announced that Rich Harden was being skipped when he came up in the rotation for "precautionary reasons".  Cubs fans are starting to sweat a little bit...

Well, after only 3 games it's already safe to say this about Missouri's NFL teams:  Hey, it's only five months until MLB spring training starts!

The Chiefs are terrible.  The Rams are even more terrible.  I couldn't believe it when Jason Whitlock of the Kansas City Star declared the Chiefs the worst team in the NFL.  He must not have to watch the Rams play each week.  Lucky guy.  Statistically, the Rams have the worst overall offense and defense.  It shows.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge

Don't get me started on the Chiefs sdcforever  ;D. I'm a diehard fan and it is hard to watch them anymore (but of course I do). I do think that the Chiefs will be playing a lot better by the end of the season. We're just young and we need to learn to win. Once Brodie is healthy again I think we'll do better. On a side note from that though, Hern and Chan Gailey need to learn how to run an offense, playcall, and learn how to make a gameplan. Right now, it appears that the Chiefs have no idea what they're doing.

I was at the Raiders game at Arrowhead two weeks ago, and I can still say this: Chiefs fans are still the most passionate in the NFL. The excitement for this team to start winning is huge and once we start to win, the Chiefs and the state of our franchise will be back to normal.

Hey, but at least the Chiefs are the best team in Missouri!
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: sdcforever on September 25, 2008, 10:55:27 PM
^The unfortunate thing is, by being the best team in Missouri that means we're the second worst in the entire NFL!

I was just sickened by the home loss to the Raiders.  That was beyond pathetic!  They've lost now, what, 10 games in a row dating back to last year?  I have a feeling wins will be hard to find.  The game against the Broncos this weekend could be very, very ugly.  We don't have much of a defense, and we certainly can't keep up with the Broncos offensively.  I really don't like Brodie very much.  I feel like we don't really have a quarterback, someone who can really lead the team.  We also don't have much of a GM, either.  We've been on the 5 year Super Bowl plan for 20 years now!

Enough football.  Let's talk MLB baseball!  I'm sad that the Cards aren't in it, but I must say I'm proud of them.  86-76 is a good record for a good team (and a team that overachieved IMO).  And finishing the year on a 6 game winning streak really makes me feel good!  If there is any justice in this world here's how I think the individual hardware should be handed out for the NL:  MVP:  Albert Pujols, Cardinals (no one is more valuable or talented all around than El Hombre)  Player of the Year (as voted by players):  Pujols again  Cy Young:  Tim Lincecum, Giants  Rookie of the Year:  Geovany Soto, Cubs

As for the playoffs, I'm rooting for the Dodgers and Phillies in the NL and the Angels and Rays in the AL.

Anyone else have any thoughts?  Who do you think should win the individual awards?  Who are you rooting for?

I thought a cross-town Series in Chicago would be great, but it doesn't look like either team is going to make it. I really hate the CWS, but it would make for a great Series. I'm a Cards fan, but just for the sake of baseball history, I'd like to see the Cubs win it all. Once every hundred years is just about right for them.  ;)

My second choice would be the Dodgers, just to show the Steinbrenners that Joe Torre is better at baseball than they are.

On the other hand, I am totally into MIZZOU football.  Chase Daniels is phenomenal, with a huge supporting cast.  They blew Nebraska away on Saturday and I look for them to do the same with every Big 12 team except for Oklahoma which ain't too shabby themselves.  OU is ranked No. 1 and it wouldn't surprise me to see MU at No. 2 this week, but more likely No. 3.

^I like Mizzou football as well.  Daniel is the leading Heisman candidate right now.  The next two weeks will be a true test for them, playing OSU and then at Texas.  They don't play Oklahoma in the regular season, so the only time they would meet is the Big 12 Championship (if both teams get there).  I would not be surprised if Oklahoma lost at least one game this year.  That's the way it's been going for teams ranked no. 1 the past couple of years.

Mizzou is ranked no. 3 in the AP poll, and no. 2 in the coaches' poll.

Am I prophet, or what?  (Though I wish I was wrong).  Not only are these last two games tough for Mizzou, but they're both losses!  IMO, it all started with our first drive against Oklahoma State.  Why in the world did Pinkel call for a field goal on fourth and goal from the 1/2 yard line?!?  We're at home and have a chance to go up 7-0 and flex some muscle against a talented and upset-minded team.  Instead we kick a field goal and Oklahoma State gains confidence, holding us to 3 points.  You can't tell me that Pinkel didn't have confidence in his offense (that averaged over 50 points a game at that time) picking up a 1/2 yard for a touchdown.  After that questionable decision, it's been all downhill.  We gave Oklahoma State confidence and faltered, losing by 6.  We obviously haven't recovered, showing the same timid, tight offense and porous defense.  And against Texas, that leads to a blowout of monstrous proportions. :o  Losing like this on the national stage sets back our program years when it comes to recruiting.

Don't be embarrassed, Mizzou fans. Any time you score 31 points in Austin, you've had a heckuva day, no matter how many points UT scores.

Meanwhile, us Hawg fans are hanging our heads. Yeah, it's a rebuilding season, yeah, we're not supposed to win squat this year, but any time you lead Kentucky, at Kentucky, 14-0 at the half, 17-0 in the 3rd, and 20-7 in the 4th with less than 5 minutes to play, and still lose... well, that really sucks.  :-X

Heckuva game by RB Michael Smith, though. After playing third fiddle behind D-Mac and Felix Jones, he's finally getting to shine. 35 carries for 192 yards rushing, plus 3 receptions for 33 yards.

SEC football rocks. Even when you lose.

Don't be embarrassed, Mizzou fans.

Well, I'm a Mizzou fan and I'm not embarassed. We've played two really tough opponents in the past two weeks and that has hurt. I thought the defense was supposed to be led by William Moore but, that hasn't worked out.

But, I am embarassed to be a Chief fan. As a diehard, it is so tough to watch my team lose 34-10, AT HOME. I know Tennessee is undefeated, but we should at least show some life and compete! I thought Brodie Croyle gave life to our offense, but then he goes down for the year. His career as a KC Chief appears to be over. Now, I have nothing to look forward to except next year, the firing of Carl Peterson and Herm Edwards, and the continued maturity (hopefully) of some of our young talent.

I'm not embarrassed as a Mizzou fan either.  We still have our sights set on the Big 12 North title, and may even be able to secure a BCS bowl berth by the end of the season.

It is tough being a Chiefs fan, though.  Brodie Croyle is out for the year (why is he so fragile?), Larry Johnson has a suspension from the NFL coming up for his second assault case for assaulting a woman at a nightclub, and Tony Gonzalez wants out (I think he'll be gone after this season, hopefully playing for a contender.  It's pretty certain the Chiefs will not be contenders in the few years he has left).  I wouldn't be shocked if Herm Edwards was gone at the end of the year, but it would surprise me to see King Carl go.  He's like a cancerous growth, and he's duped owner Clark Hunt into thinking he still has a winning vision for the team.  Mark my words, though.  If we have a new coach next year I wouldn't expect a winning season for another year, at least.  If we have both a new coach and new GM it'll be even longer.  The long wait continues.

The Rams have undergone a shocking turnaround, though.  Beating the Redskins in Washington and Dallas in St. Louis in consecutive weeks is stunning.  Haslett has injected new life and purpose into the players.  At 2-4 the Rams are now in second place in the lowly NFC West and are no longer laughingstocks.  There are now two laughingstocks in the NFL this year:  the Lions and, unfortunately, the Chiefs.

^Brodie is just tiny. He went through a massive conditioning program over the offseason and was only able to gain four pounds. Carl Peterson will finish out his contract which ends after the 2009 season and then he'll retire. But hopefully, all of us Chiefs fans will be put out of the Hermisery (I just made that one up :)) and he'll get fired.

More bad news for the Chiefs.  Damon Huard is out for the year.  Our hopes lie with Tyler Thigpen versus Favre and the Jets.  Larry Johnson will not play, either.  This game could be very ugly.

Chiefs played well today. If we continue to improve and compete like we did today, we'll win more football games.

How about Tyler Thigpen being the best #4 on the field today, huh?   ;D
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: sdcforever on October 26, 2008, 10:09:07 PM
^Thigpen did play well.  He's mobile, which is a good thing.  His mobility might keep him healthy for a while, since he'll need to move around a lot with that terrible offensive line in front of him.  That's why so many of our QBs have gone down this year--no protection.

The Chiefs have some interesting games coming up, and next week vs. Tampa Bay will be a tough test.  I wouldn't mind them winning a few more games, but I have to be honest to myself.  The Chiefs are a bad, bad team.  No question about it.  I don't want them to win too many games for two reasons:  they need a very high draft pick and Herm and Carl need to go.  If they finish strong neither will happen.

EDIT:  I'm still hesitant to anoint Thigpen as the QB we've been looking for.  He hasn't played enough.  Let's see how he does against a good team with a good defense.  He imploded against Atlanta.  He was the better #4 for most of the game, but Favre played well when it mattered most and got the win.  In the end, that's all that matters.

^We got free tickets to the game on Saturday night so we got to go to the Bucs game on Sunday. Such a fun game to go to!! Arrowhead was electric. The Chiefs had it in the bag but let the Bucs have it. Again, Thigpen played well. It helped that we actually had great play calling! Branden Albert looked like a great NFL left tackle (he will be on a consistent basis soon enough), Jamaal Charles in the Chiefs' Maurice Jones-Drew type back, and Brandon Carr, 5th round pick from Grand Valley State is looking great.

The Chiefs may not be winning right now, but our time is definitely coming.

^I agree, things do look promising.  I expect Herm to be fired after the year (and, with any luck, King Carl will be gone as well) which will help.  I don't expect us to be a playoff team this year or next, but I do expect us to make it the year after next.  With any luck the Rams will make it to the playoffs the same year too.  Not very often both Missouri NFL teams make the playoffs in the same year! ;D

Wow, talk about déjŕ vu all over again...

You know how sometimes you doze off and wake up with no sense of time having elapsed? I had the Chiefs/Chargers game on today while I laid down to sleep (I work nights). I woke up, and the Chiefs had just scored and were going for two. I dozed off again (for a few seconds, I thought), and they scored a touchdown and were going for two.

This confused me, but I was trying to sleep, and I didn't want to wake myself up by trying to figure out how KC was going for the endzone four times in a row.

So I just read the highlights and figured out the 2nd and 4th quarters ended the same way.  ;D

^I was upset that Herm decided to go for two at the end of the game.  Why not play for the tie and OT?  It wouldn't upset me so much if this team was winning, but they're not.  Coming so close to victory so many times does not build confidence in a young team.  I'm sure he trusted that they could drive the ball if they won the toss in OT.  Maybe he didn't trust that the defense could stop the Chargers if they won the OT toss.  I realize they had nothing to lose by going for two (the season's already over), but I think you should always be playing for something and make smart decisions.  Going for two when you're down by one at the end of the game is not a smart decision.  By going for two Herm acted like he doesn't care about building confidence in his players.  And that's a shame.

It's that time of year again.  Deer season starts Saturday and I'll be heading up north in the morning.  I've got about two weeks of vacation from the City.  I'm excited because my buddy Dan will be able to hunt the whole season with me this year.  We've been hunting on a farm just north of I-70 and west of Marshall, MO for ten years now, and had pretty good luck, tagging a lot of deer and some very nice bucks.  First thing on the agenda however is a trip to Ames, Iowa to see Mizzou play Iowa State.  My friend Kurtis Gregory (#78) is an offensive lineman for the Tigers and we'll ride up with his folks.  We're looking forward to a good game, but it's supposed to be cold.  Have a good time while I'm gone.

Albert Pujols is NL MVP and I'm ecstatic! ;D ;D

He definitely deserves the award.  He's clearly the best player in the game today and one of the greatest players ever (no exaggeration).  He gets forgotten because he plays in the midwest and not in LA or NY.  It would've been bad had Ryan Howard won the award instead; Albert trumped him in every meaningful category (HR and RBI are overrated).  Here are a couple of great articles on Pujols if you're interested:

Swoosh, who do you like to win:  Texas Tech or OU?  My pick is Tech.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: sdcforever on November 22, 2008, 09:06:47 PM
Clearly I was wrong.  Tech is just overmatched tonight on both sides of the ball.  Norman is a very tough place to play, and Tech is better than this.  I expected it to be a shootout and come down to the last possession.  A lot of people expected 49 points in the first half, but not for 42 of those points to come from one team!  And over 400 yards of offense for OU in the first half?  Unbelievable!
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: Swoosh on November 22, 2008, 11:16:07 PM
Grrr.... we have to wait anothe week to find out who Mizzou will play in KC on the 6th.
TECH had everything going for them and then they came out and laid an egg -- a huge one to be exact.  That will definitely knock them out of BCS and they just ruined their chance of Big XII South as well.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: sdcforever on November 23, 2008, 03:13:06 PM
The interesting thing is a lot of people are trying to figure out who out of Tech, OU, and Texas will be #2 in the BCS and seem to think that will be decided next weekend.  Hello!  One of those 3 has to play Mizzou in KC!  Wouldn't it be interesting if Mizzou did the incredible and won the Big 12 title?  Then there'd be three Big 12 teams in BCS bowl games instead of two. :)

I have a feeling OU will be tested next weekend at OSU.  I would not be surprised if OSU wins that game.

BCS rules only allow for two teams from one conference in the BCS bowls.

Which is stupid because the ACC, Pac-10 and Big Least shouldn't automatically get a team into the BCS with how weak their conferences are.

Oh in other news, Mizzou got their Big XII North Championship trophy on Thursday last week.

I hope OU doesn't leap Texas in the BCS.  Coaches keep calling for a playoff, then they ignore the head-to-head result of Texas beating OU earlier in the year.  I was not all that impressed with OU yesterday either.  That game was a lot closer than the final score reflected.  And I'm sure OU/Texas/Tech are scared of playing MU in the title game, huh? ::)

They are probably more scared of the fact that they will play outdoors in Missouri at night in December exposed to the elements and on natural grass which none of them have done this year.

Missouri should not be underestimated.  I am hoping for an upset, as Missouri has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Well, it'll be Mizzou vs. OU Saturday night.  I'm hoping for an upset as well; at least we'll have experience playing on that field.  If we can upset OU that could push Texas into the national championship game; I think they would better represent the Big 12.  We all know how OU chokes in BCS games.  I say "could" push Texas into the national championship game because 'Bama needs to take care of business against Florida.  If 'Bama does and we beat OU then Texas should play 'Bama in the national championship game.  Honestly, Florida vs. 'Bama is the game I'm most intrigued by this coming weekend.

On a side note, I'd love to see what USC's defense can do against the likes of OU, Tech, or Texas.  That would be exciting!

KBCraig-

Yes, it is a Browning lever action, 30-06, with a Nikon scope.  Pretty nice rig.  I've had it about 11 years and have killed a lot of deer with it.  Shot a Marlin 30-30 before that, so, being used to a lever, that's what I looked for in a higher power gun.  I could have gotten it in any number of calibers, but 30-06 is pretty standard so I picked that.  Got it for an elk hunt trip, which ultimately fell through so I'm still looking forward to my first one, someday.

Well...Mizzou got smoked in the Big 12 title game 62-21, setting up a BCS "National Championship" game between Florida and Oklahoma.  Who do you like?  I'm giving the edge to Florida.  I don't know why.  It just feels right. :)

As for Mizzou, we get the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29 against 9-3 Northwestern.  I know we can beat Northwestern, but if we play the way we have the past two games we definitely won't beat them.  Chase Daniel needs to step up big time.  His mistakes really let the game get away against Oklahoma.  I think Mizzou will be fired up for this game and will win.  Who do you like--Northwestern or Mizzou?
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge

From what I have been hearing there is a lot of animosity on the team right now -- between players and other players and also between the players and coaches... this is not the time for stuff like this to be happening.

Chase Daniel has looked like crap the last two games ... and actually I will say he has played like crap ever since the Buffalo game.  I'm not sure if the boy was busy believing his own press or what, but he is not the same player that he was last year.

I sure hope we do something about our defense before next year.

Gotta go with Mizzou.  And I've gotta go with OU over Florida.  I think Florida is about the only team in the country that can hang with either OU or Texas.  Texas over OSU by a good margin. Matter of fact, it's very possible that the Big 12 goes undefeated in the bowl games.

You're right about the defense, Swoosh.  We've gotta have that to move up to the next level.

I agree with you about Chase.  He's been terrible for several games now.  I like Pinkel, but I wonder if Mizzou has reached its peak under him?  He needs to make some personnel changes with his assistants, but what's the motivation?  The administration has already given him a bonus and extension as a vote of confidence--basically telling Pinkel we like the direction the team is headed.  Clearly, though, the team needs to change directions and changes need to be made.  I personally think they should've waited to give him a bonus and extension until after the season, but that's just me.  I do like what Pinkel's done since he's been coach, but the money he's making calls for Mizzou to take the extra step and prove it's a perennial top ten team.  We've gotten lucky with teams like Kansas State and Nebraska regressing the past few years in the Big 12 North, but Nebraska is making a comeback.  We are losing so many talented players after this season (and I wonder if Maclin will stick around); Pinkel has a lot of hard work ahead to avoid a 7-5 season next year.  And 7-5 is what I expect unless he makes changes.

Post by: Swoosh on December 08, 2008, 09:40:22 AM
First off, this is not Pinkel's fault.  He felt that he had the best players that he had on the roster in those positions.  At the same time there is a trickle down effect.  The assistant coaches, especially on defense got way too comfortable with the offense always bailing them out every game.  That clearly was not the way to win ball games especially when you run into other high powered offenses.

Missouri had the 117 ranked pass defense in the NCAA.  If you did not know, that means Missouri is dead last.  However, the silver lining to that is the fact that the highest ranked pass defense in the Big XII was 98th and I think it was Colorado.

sdcforever, you mentioned that we are losing so many talented players after this season.  I say that is not the case.  We returned almost our entire defense and we saw that made no difference.  It was a SENIOR who blew his coverage and cost us the game against kU, and on Saturday the SENIORS were the ones that were constantly getting burnt on defense.  On Offense, we are losing Daniel and Coffmann for sure.  While we will miss Coffmann, we have a lot of talent in the wings waiting to come on stage.  We will miss Wolfert as well, but his head has not been on right here lately as he thinks he is cursed or something.  Daniel is a ticking time bomb and it is very obvious he can no longer get the job done.  Gabbert has proven that he can march his team down the field and we have an excellent recruiting class coming in.

Missouri next year
vs. Illinois (W)
vs. Bowling Green (W)
@ Nevada (W)
vs. Nebraska (W) -- they too are losing a lot after this season, but they still may win North
@ Oklahoma State (?) -- OSU is losing a lot of their key players, but this is in Stillwater
vs. Texas (L) -- even without Colt, Texas wins this one
@ Colorado (W) -- too much animosity on this team to win for now
vs. Baylor (W) -- I give Baylor two more years before they "break out"
@ K-State (W) -- It is going to take Snyder more than a year to "fix" this team
vs. Iowa State (W) -- this game is going to be closer than some think
vs. Kansas (?) -- could go either way

Gotta go with Florida over OU. Aside from the fact that I'm an SEC guy and I hate Oklahoma, I honestly think Tebow's passing game is going to destroy OU's defense.

^Certainly OU is not known for their outstanding defense. :)

IMO they really fumbled the ball with most of the BCS bowl games.  I have no problem with Florida/OU or Penn State/USC (Rose).  But, Cincinatti/Virginia Tech (Orange)?  A no. 12 vs. no. 19?  VT with four losses playing on New Year's Day.  No team with four losses should be playing on New Year's Day.  Utah/Alabama in the Sugar Bowl?  Nothing against Utah, but Texas and USC are ranked higher.  Finally the Fiesta Bowl pairing of Texas/Ohio State.  That'll be a blood bath.  Ohio State doesn't stand a chance.  And how exactly did Ohio State get in over undefeated Boise State?  This is not a good bowl season when the pairings are only 2 for 5.

It's all politics -- and who will bring in the most money for the bowl.
Who do you think will travel better?  Ohio State fans or Boise State fans.  The answer to that is rather "duh"

I'm not happy we got stuck with the Alamo Bowl, but at least Mizzou got one.

Who here is a college basketball fan?  I've been pleasantly surprised by Mizzou so far this year.  They had an impressive win against USC and played Xavier very tough in a loss.  They showed a lot of resolve last night against a tough Murray State team.  It'll be interesting to see how they fare against KU, Oklahoma, and Texas.

I would like to see Oklahoma vs. North Carolina myself.  I think it'd be a hard fight, but North Carolina would pull away in the end.  I thought Michigan State would play NC tough, but sheesh.  It was like NC was playing a DII school!

FIRE HERM EDWARDS!
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: sdcforever on December 29, 2008, 04:26:39 PM
^I agree, Herm needs to go...badly.  He still refuses to acknowledge that the team is not on the right track, and thinks he's made progress.  I can't see the new GM retaining him; GMs like to bring in their own coaching staffs.  Come next year I think LJ will be gone, and sadly, so will Tony Gonzalez.  He wanted a trade in October and has just publicly stated that unless Tyler Thigpen remains the starting QB (I don't have a problem with that) and Herm is retained as head coach (I hope not!) he will be very unhappy.  I sincerely hope he's just toeing the company line, so to speak, and doesn't really want Herm back.  But if Herm's gone come next year and Tony starts to have "hissy fits" about it then he needs to go as well.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: saladdays on December 30, 2008, 10:56:43 AM
I don't have a problem with Herm being back at all. Herm wanted to rebuild the team starting the first year but Carl wouldn't let him. He's been at odds with Carl his whole tenure, and I think he at least deserves a year without Carl at the helm. Of course, new GMs do like to get their own guys, but (purely speculation) I think Clark Hunt is willing to give him another year.

I don't know about you guys, but I fully expected the Chiefs to do pretty bad this year. They were a lot more competitive in games than I thought they would.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: sdcforever on December 30, 2008, 01:08:18 PM
^Herm's rebuilding isn't working.  He's even admitted that.  Plus, before the 2007 season Carl wanted to bring in two or three free agent veterans to help the young players mature but Herm wouldn't allow it.  He said that it would take playing time away from the young players.  Carl wanted to split playing time between those veterans and the young players, and the veterans would tutor the young players.  So before the 2007 season there was a changing of the guard, so to speak, and Carl lost his power.  For the past two seasons the Chiefs have been run not by Carl, but by Herm.  So Herm is fully to blame for the worst season in Chiefs history.  He has run the Chiefs organization into the ground and needs to go.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: Coaster on December 30, 2008, 04:04:38 PM
^While I agree with you on certain things (Herm running us into the ground) I certainly disagree with other things. I do think there has been progress made. I watched every game this year and if you did too I think you'd notice progress:

Tyler "Thiggy" Thigpen- He looked terrible at Atlanta in his first start. I made fun of him and wrote him off. But, he certainly got much better and made a lot of veteran-like plays when he is essentially a rookie when it comes to his playing time. I don't think we can look at his win-loss record as an indicator as to if he can be our QBotF.

Branden Albert/Glenn Dorsey- Both of our first round picks made progress, especially Albert. Albert helped hold Joey Porter to half a tackle in the Miami game. Porter came into the game with 17 and a half sacks. Dorsey had his best game of the year in the final contest against Cincinnati. Albert will be a Pro Bowl left tackle someday, with Dorsey the jury is still out, but you can't call him a bust yet.

Brandon Flowers/Brandon Carr- Our two young cornerbacks. I think Flowers is going to be a great one. Carr had a pretty good rookie campaign, but he tried not to give up the huge play too often. He will get better in time.

Obviously, our team made progress with how we competed from the beginning of the year to the end. But, how many big leads can be given up that Herm can still hold onto his job? The Tampa Bay game, San Diego (twice), Miami. We just lost the fourth quarter way too often. I just wonder how many chances a guy can get.  I just think he is a good man/good talent finder, but he is a TERRIBLE game planner and game manager. I sometimes felt I could do better, as did 90% of the Chiefs kingdom. He will find a job with someone else if he does get fired. (Hopefully with Oakland)  ::)

I think the foundation has been laid for success but there is still a lot of work to be done, especially on defense. But, I think Tony Gonzalez will stay. Larry Johnson will go. I won't get into those situations.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: sdcforever on December 31, 2008, 11:58:20 AM
^Herm is a terrible game manager, I agree.  Any guy that is 6-26 in two years needs to be fired.  Progress has been made but I think that if the Chiefs are going to rebuild it needs to be all the way.  As in any guy that makes you think "Kansas City Chiefs football" needs to go (i.e. Tony Gonzalez).  This needs to be a fresh start.  And Tony wants to be traded, I don't think that has changed.  He deserves to play for a contender and have a chance at winning a Super Bowl; a guy with his talent needs a ring and that won't come with the Chiefs.

Here's a sobering stat.  The Chiefs defense had 10 sacks (10!) the entire season.  Jared Allen had 14.5 himself for the Vikings this year.  That trade still makes no sense to me.  Especially since we could've put the franchise tag on him.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: saladdays on December 31, 2008, 12:56:31 PM
I don't have time to fully respond to this topic, but I somewhat disagree that Herm had all the power.  I think he had significant power, but I don't think he is all at fault for everything.  For instance, I know that Carl had significant issues with Jared Allen, which was a big reason for him being traded.

I do understand that someone typically takes the fall for a team doing poorly, and that person usually is the coach (warranted or unwarranted).  It's not going to kill me if he isn't back, but I'm not going to have a cow if he is.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: sdcforever on December 31, 2008, 01:22:22 PM
^I agree that sometimes the coach taking the fall is unwarranted.  I think it's a shame that Mangini was fired, for instance.  And don't even get me started on men's college basketball coach firings, especially since last year a few coaches were fired from teams that made the NCAA tournament but didn't go far enough.  In pro sports especially teams don't have patience with coaches.  It takes time to build a winner, but owners want instant success.  I do, however, think Herm has had enough time.

Tony will stick around just because of Tyler Thigpen, in my opinion.

My jaw hit the floor when Mike Shanahan was fired by the Broncos though. I thought I'd never see the day when that would happen.

I can't remember if I've asked this already, so here goes.  Who's your pick?  OU or Florida?  I think Florida wins a close game.  OU definitely won't score 60, and I don't think OU's giving (it's definitely not stingy) defense will be able to slow Tebow and Florida's speedy offense.

OU's choking is one of the intangibles that I considered in my prediction. :)  If I had my way neither would win since both Stoops and Meyer are so smug and full of themselves already.  I'd also give Utah a slice of the National Championship for taking it to Alabama early and often and being the only undefeated team this year.

They beat no. 12 TCU, no. 14 BYU, Oregon State (the only team to beat USC and who should finish in the top 25), and of course no. 4 Alabama.  Not exactly a cupcake schedule.  Who else have they beat?  Everyone they were supposed to beat.  They can't control what conference they play in.  What more do you need to do except beat everyone you're scheduled to play against?

Tulsa is running away with it so bad, it's not very interesting.  I turned over to watch Ark and #7 Tex basketball.  Ark is just about to win it.

I am one who has to give Utah kudos.  It doesn't matter what conference you play in, every one has the perennial good teams and the perennial pushovers.  Utah got some quality wins, and beat Alabama handily.  I think that since Texas had such a hard time with OSU, Utah moves up to 3, maybe even 2 but no lower than 4, in the final standings.

Final-
1  Winner of the national championship game
2  USC
3  Utah
4 Texas
5  Loser of the national championship game

Teams currently ranked 6-10, except for Utah didn't do to well in bowl games so it's anyone's guess how it'll shake out.

Stoops just got out-coached, period.  Some questionable decisions, especially not trying for field goals in the first half.  That 49 yard try was questionable, too; the one that got blocked.  The kicker hadn't even kicked a 40 yarder the entire year, so it makes sense that he kicked it too low.

At the end of the first half Bradford should've thrown the ball away to the back of the endzone rather than trying to thread it into traffic; that interception was a killer, especially since they were planning to kick a field goal on the next play.

All in all, a sloppy game.  Clearly OU hadn't seen a defense quite as tough as Florida's all season.  Florida hit them hard on that first drive, which set the tone for the entire game.  OU's defense really stepped up, though.  I was impressed with both defenses, actually.

I must say I'm pretty happy that Utah was #2 and got 16 first place votes.  I wonder:  would Utah, USC, or Texas put up a better fight against Florida?  We'll never know.

The BCS final is not out yet.

The Coaches Poll (USA Today) is the one to really go by and it looks to me...

1. Flori-DUH
2. USC (Fight On!)
3. TEXAS (HOOKED 'EM and theirselves)
4. Utah
5. Choke-lahoma
6. Choke-labama
7. TC (gets no respect) U
8. Penn (omg our coach is old) State
9. Oregon (OSwho?)
10. Georgia
11. THE Overrated State University
12. TECH (guns up!)
13. Boise (we play on blue carpet) State
14. VT
15. Missishitty (the only team that can beat the Nat Champs -- who MU beat in 2007)
16. MIZZOU
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: Zephon on January 09, 2009, 05:01:11 PM
Gotta agree.  OU called some pretty stupid plays those two times in the first half when they were inside the five.  And at the end of the half, why throw to a guy who is triple covered instead of the wideout to the right with man-to-man coverage?  I'd say OU handed the game to them.  That said, Tebow was great, pretty much taking things into his own hands in the second half, along with Harvin.  It would have been a different game had OU played smarter in the first half.

Final AP rankings-

 1. Florida (48) 13-1 1,606
 2. Utah (16) 13-0 1,519
 3. USC (1) 12-1 1,481
 4. Texas 12-1 1,478
 5. Oklahoma 12-2 1,391
 6. Alabama 12-2 1,264
 7. TCU 11-2 1,193
 8. Penn State 11-2 1,153
 9. Ohio State 10-3 1,013
10. Oregon 10-3 997
11. Boise State 12-1 938
12. Texas Tech 11-2 916
13. Georgia 10-3 903
14. Mississippi 9-4 857
15. Virginia Tech 10-4 713
16. Oklahoma State 9-4 534
17. Cincinnati 11-3 506
18. Oregon State 9-4 467
19. Missouri 10-4 435
20. Iowa 9-4 317
21. Florida State 9-4 246
22. Georgia Tech 9-4 223
23. West Virginia 9-4 144
24. Michigan State 9-4 138
25. Brigham Young 10-3 137

I had Utah and USC switched, but as I said, I suspected that Utah might end up at #2.  MU ended up at #19.  Probably the best they could expect considering they lost to (of all things) Kansas.  It'll be interesting to see what kind of team they can field next year, minus Daniel, Coffman, and Maclin.  It would be nice if they fielded a defense also.

ESPN has put out their very early preseason top 25 for college football, and here's how they see it.  I'm just highlighting the top 5 and then the Big 12 teams in the poll.

1.  Florida--they expect them to be wire-to-wire #1.
2.  Texas
3.  Oklahoma
4.  USC
5.  Alabama

now the other Big 12 teams in their top 25
10.  Oklahoma State
22.  Nebraska
23.  Kansas
25.  Texas Tech

No Mizzou.

Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge

I hope they're back, but I'm not expecting them to be at the level they've been the past two years.  We can be optimistic, but losing Chase Daniel and Chase Coffman (the most productive pass-catch duo in Mizzou football history), and Jeremy Maclin is going to hurt.  There's no way around it.  I think perhaps the toughest hole to fill will be Maclin's.  I found something else interesting on ESPN's website.  Here's how they see the Big 12 shaping up next season.  They make these predictions with the caveat that they can change them if more people declare for the draft.  But as of now, here's what they say:

North: 1. Nebraska; 2. Kansas; 3. Colorado; 4. Missouri; 5. Kansas State; 6. Iowa State
South: 1. Texas; 2. Oklahoma; 3. Oklahoma State; 4. Texas Tech; 5. Texas A&M; 6. Baylor.

Big 12 championship game: Texas over Nebraska.

Bowl teams: Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Texas Tech, Colorado, Missouri.

Interesting that they have us with 8 bowl teams next year.  I agree that Nebraska has really made strides; I think they were the North team that was playing the best at the end of the season, including their bowl game.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: Swoosh on January 11, 2009, 03:04:56 PM
Nebraska is losing a lot this year though -- including their QB.  While I think they have made great strides this last season, they are a long way from being "BACK"

They have to go to Columbia this year -- they haven't won there since 2001.
Also I just don't see Mizzou dropping off...

BIG 12 NORTH TEAM WINS
LAST 7 YRS. ALL GAMES

Mizzou 54
Nebraska 49
Kansas 46
Kansas St. 40
Colorado 36
Iowa St. 27

Think about it, that includes 3 years of the stars you mentioned, but it also includes 4 years before they came around... everyone thought it was over when Brad Smith graduated and now everyone is like "Brad Who?"  Forgive me for being overly optimistic (as some might view me) but everyone graduates people.  If you choose to roll over and play dead since you don't have (insert name here) anymore then, you are not a true fan and just a bandwaggoneer.

Who said anything about rolling over and playing dead?  I just think the North teams will be closer in talent than the past few years.  Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado are improving.

IMHO... 2009

^ Nebraska
= Missouri
V kansas
= Kansas State
V Colorado
^ Iowa State

^Can't argue with that.  I think the separation of the top 3 teams will be pretty slim, going by the conference record and that the non-conference records will be really important.  Out of curiosity, how do you see the south shaping up next year?  I pretty much agree with ESPN's guess for the south (not for the north, though).  Although OU and Texas is a toss-up for 1 and 2.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge

The thing is OSU is losing NOTHING for next year.  They are going to be one tough team.  I almost want to go out on a limb and say they will win the South next year.

It will be a dog fight between Nebraska and Mizzou next year for the North.  I think I am going to go with Mizzou one more year before I think Nebraska reclaims the top spot.  NU has to go to Mizzou this year and I think it will get in their head that they have not won there since 2001.

North
1. Mizzou
2. Nebraska
3. Kansas
4. Kansas State
5. Colorado
6. Iowa State

South
1. Oklahoma State
2. Texas
3. Texas Tech
3. Oklahoma
5. Baylor
6. Texas A&M

^I just don't see it...I don't believe that a team can lose that much talent and just go into next season and pick up where they left off (which we didn't finish well in the first place). I love Mizzou and I definitely am not a fair weather fan. I just see it as what will happen.

But, I am waaaaaay too overly optimistic with the Chiefs. I'm a 1,000,000X bigger Chiefs fan than I am Mizzou. Although, I did go to the K-State and Big Twelve Championship games. Both were cold...

So, I can't blame you for being optimistic. Win the North! :)

^^Coaster, speaking of the Chiefs, rumors are flying that the Chiefs are close to naming their new coach; there may be an announcement as soon as tomorrow.  Rumors say the new coach will be none other than Mike Shanahan, former Broncos head coach.  Now I like Shanahan, but the problem is he did all of his winning with Elway at quarterback, and hasn't really done anything since.  Worth a shot, though, I guess.

^^We have to fire Herm first.  ;D

I'm not so high on Shanny. I want someone like Frazier with the Vikings or maybe Haley with the Cardinals. As you said, Shanahan did all his winning with Elway and he would destroy our terrible defense.  ;D

^^^Mizzou pulled out that victory last night by the skin of their teeth! It was nerve wracking.

^I think it's possible for MU to go 7-1 or 8-0 at home this year in the Big 12, so two or three good road wins are important.  In that respect, last night's win was HUGE.

Well, that rumor I heard appears to be coming true.  Herm was fired today and, for better or worse, sources say the Chiefs are close to a deal with Shanahan.  Perhaps worse, since Gonzalez he'd be unhappy if Herm wasn't the coach next year.

ESPN is reporting that we are close to a deal with Shanahan. NFL Network is reporting that Shanahan will definitely NOT be the coach of the Chiefs. I don't know what to believe. I'd think Shanahan would want to come here but he'd want all the power.

BUT WHAT A GREAT DAY THIS IS!!! ;D

Well.....we've got about an inch of sleet and ice build up on our porch so far, and it's still coming down here in Branson, pretty heavy actually.  The City is closed today so I have an unexpected day off.  Yea!!!  The streets look really bad and I haven't seen anybody out on them so far.  That in itself is surprising.

Anyway...who's gonna join me in picking the Cardinals in the Super Bowl.  The line right now is Pittsburg by 7, but I think Warner and the Cards can pull off the upset.  Hope so anyway.  I've been a fan of the Cardinals since the days of Jim Hart, Terry Metcalf, and Mel Gray.  And I'm a big big fan of Kurt Warner.  The Rams gave him a bum deal- still sore about that.  They couldn't field an offensive line that could protect him, so..., get rid of him instead?  But, he's with a better team now so I guess the Lord worked it out for him.

GO CARDINALS!!!!!

Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge

I continue to work in the Entertainment Tech department, one of the fortunate few who are retained for winter time.  We do routine and sometimes not so routine maintenance work in the venues.  The first thing we did was to go around to all the venues, cleaning and buttoning them down for the off season.  Some years we repaint all the dressing rooms, bathrooms, etc.  Right now, two of us are busy taking down all the lighting fixtures in the Opera House and cleaning them.  Another crew is tearing up the stage decking down in EH for replacement, and also a few changes will be made to the set structure.  There is going to be a bird show down there during the daytime next fall, so accommodations are being made for that.  Then another couple of guys dig into all the sound gear, cleaning and repairing as needed.  Sometime around the end of Feb., our crew will expand with more returnees, and we will strike the Dickens set.  As the park opening nears, more techies will come back and start getting venues ready, reinstalling equipment, painting stages, etc.  We stay pretty busy, and it's not often that everything that needs or should be done gets done.

Just found out that the park is closed tomorrow also.  Double yea!!  The freezing rain and sleet is still coming down, expected to change to snow later on.

We still have two built in snow days.  We can afford one more, it would be made up on the Tuesday after President's Day.  That week is "courtwarming" so having another day added to spirit week would be all right with me and would allow my band one more day to get ready for our courtshow that week.

We've only had one thus far and we had to make that up on MLK day (which urked me as I could have used the day off).  January has been a very long month for us teachers as well as for the students.  Usually I dislike February the most out of the school year, but I find myself looking forward to turning the page of the calendar from January.

Well...the precip stopped sometime during the night.  We were fortunate enough to not have lost power, many did.  We have about 4" of sleet and ice on our driveway.... no cleaning it off.  It's worse a little south of us in Arkansas.

Swoosh, I know what you mean about the seemingly long stretch of Jan-Feb.  It's a bummer.  We don't get holidays off per se, though once you reach three years of employment, I think it is, you start accruing paid holiday days that you can use to take off on other days of your choosing, as long as it can be worked out with your supervisor.  I can't remember the last time I was actually off on Memorial Day, the 4th of July, or Labor Day.  We do get Christmas and New Year's Day off though.  I'll have to use some of that paid holiday time this week to round out my 40-hour week.

Wonder how the City looks right now.

Here in West Plains, we have trees falling somewhere every 20-30 seconds. Branches are also crashing on the roof. A relative in Branson (actually, Hollister) said they have an inch of freezing rain, with more sleet and snow.

It can't look good right now in the City. One half of my yard looks as if a hurricane came through.  :o

So I had a wild time in the ice on Monday.

It started icing here before noon, but work places and schools didn't let out until exactly 3:05. Everyone. All at once. I waited through this massive gridlock for about an hour, inching forward and then sliding to a stop, praying I didn't slide into the cars in front of me. At certain points my car started sliding sideways, bouncing into the curb. Luckily the cars to the side of me didn't follow.

As I got closer to my house, I started seeing cars littering ditches. Everywhere I looked there were overturned vehicles, or vehicles that had completely sliden off the roadway and hit things. My town is divided by a flood plain, so you have to go up a hill to get to the major neighborhoods from downtown. Unfortunately, not a single car in front of me was able to get up it. It was gridlock for a long while, until I had the bright idea to make a break, take a lone side street, and cut through a hilly neighborhood. I knew it would be treacherous, but it was a large neighborhood, and the gravel trucks had already been through a lot of it. Unfortunately, not only is this neighborhood hilly, but it also only has one through street, yet none of the streets are marked as dead ends. I took what I thought was the only through street, only to find myself at the top of a hill with a cuvlesac (sp?) at the bottom. Too late, I tried to stop and turn around, but I was already sliding. I slide probably 200ft or more all the way down this hill, slamming the break all the way. Thankfully, my car stopped at the curb at the very end of the street, rather than jumping it and diving down into the valley below. I ditched my car there and trekked over to a relatives' house. Later that night we returned with several bags of ice melt and melted the whole hill. I have 4-wheel drive, so it wasn't too bad getting out of there once the ice was melted.

Yeah, it wasn't a fun day for me either, and my area wasn't even hit that badly.

Speaking of college sports...

Arkansas is on a heckuva roll for football recruiting. Ronnie Wingo from St. Louis was a HUGE get for RB. They also got Cobi Hamilton from Texas High (Texarkana), who wasn't highly touted, but is going to be a fantastic WR (6'3", 190, basketball star, track star, one of the top 200 meter sprinters in Texas).

On the basketball front, the Hogs aren't doing so great. At least not in the SEC, that is... but they're 2-0 against Top 10 Big 12 teams.  ;D

Yep, Mizzou did what you thought they couldn't do, Swoosh. :)  And that K-State loss doesn't look as bad now.  Actually, IMO it still looks really bad because we weren't competitive at all.  I just can't figure Mizzou out; one game they'll look unstoppable and the next they'll play so bad it seems like a DII school could beat them.

^That was crazy.  It's a close game.  AZ gets the ball to start the 2nd half and I feel it's important that they score, even a field goal.  If they don't and PIT comes back and scores a touchdown that will be a very difficult deficit to overcome.

Here's the official prediction of Punxsutawney Phil:

Phil's official forecast as read February 2nd, 2009 at sunrise at Gobbler's Knob:

"Hear Ye Hear Ye

On Gobbler's Knob this glorious Groundhog Day, February 2nd, 2009

Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Prognosticator of all Prognosticators

Awoke to the call of President Bill Cooper

And greeted his handlers, Ben Hughes and John Griffiths

After casting a joyful eye towards thousands of his faithful followers,

Phil proclaimed that his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers were World Champions one more time

And a bright sky above me

Showed my shadow beside me.

So 6 more weeks of winter it will be."

And here's a couple of photos from the event.

As a diehard U2 fan, I have to give a shout-out to my favorite band!  The link below will take you to their MySpace page, and if you scroll down you can watch the new music video for their new single "Get On Your Boots".  Check it out!  It's spectacular! ;D
http://www.myspace.com/u2 (http://www.myspace.com/u2)

The link below will take you to a page on Wal-Mart's website where you can listen to 30 second samples of the songs on U2's new album "No Line On the Horizon", to be released March 3rd.  It's hard to develop an opinion on any of the songs after only 30 seconds (they're pretty layered and complex) but I was bobbing my head and tapping my feet through all of them, so that's a good sign!  Another good sign is that those in the media who have heard the album all the way through are raving about it!  Check out the samples! :)

Finally, U2 will be opening the Grammy Awards tonight at 7 PM Central Time on CBS with a performance of "Get On Your Boots".  Check it out if you're able! :)

EDIT:  It appears the 30 second previews have been taken down from the Wal-Mart website.  However, you can still listen to them on YouTube if you want.

That was a great game (well, the second half anyway)! :)

The game @KU on March 1st and the one against OU are going to be huge in deciding who wins the Big 12 title.  KU and MU are fairly even, as their national rankings indicate.  OU is definitely on another level entirely.

Well kWHOooo? beat CHOKElahoma tonight AT Norman, so that makes me a little more confident about our chances with OU at Mizzou.  I wish they'd hurry up and sell out the rest of the tickets for Wednesday's game (MU - KState) so that we can finish the season with 5 consecutive sell-outs.

IMO, KU was able to win last night because Griffin wasn't in the lineup.  It's become apparent that they can't win without Griffin.  I think the score would've been reversed if Griffin had played.

I really hope MU doesn't look past K-State to the games at KU and vs. OU.  K-State's a good team and if MU isn't focused they could very well lose tomorrow night.

Chalk up another win for the Tigers.  That's #24 on the season.
Sure hope #25 comes on Sunday in Lawrence.  Basically whoever wins that game is in the driver's seat for the Conference title.  Since OU has to come to Columbia this year to play, I like our chances.

Well, we won the second half 46-45, but that doesn't mean much when you're in a 19-45 hole starting out the half.

We just don't play well on the road, now dropping to 5-4 on the road (2-1 on a neutral site, 17-0 at home).  We don't really have a big man inside that can compete against good big men, giving up 19 points and 14 boards to Aldrich.  A win against OU is definitely possible since we'll be at home, but Blake Griffin could end up with 40-50 points and 30 boards against us!  (He looked like his old self at Texas Tech, putting up 20 points and grabbing 19 boards).  We'll learn a lot about our poise away from home at the conference tournament.

I'm still not convinced that Mizzou is truly a great team.  They're great at home, but they're nothing special on the road or at neutral sites.  I'll be convinced of their greatness if they can make a serious run at the conference championship (i.e. making it to the championship game and losing a close one, at the very least) in Oklahoma City.  Our last game at A&M is not going to be easy.  Mizzou's average on the road, even against so-so teams, and playing on the road in the Big 12 is no cake walk, as KU and OU proved last night.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: Swoosh on March 05, 2009, 06:36:46 PM
I don't understand how one could not think Missouri is a great team.
18-0 at home.  3 of their 5 losses were to ranked teams (at the time).

You could say the same thing about kansas.  They have lost all of their games on the road or on neutral sites, does that make you think they are not a great team either?

Just trying to figure out your reasoning for a statement that (to me at least) has no merit behind it.  I mean we could quote facts and statistics out the wahzoo that states otherwise and support the fact that Missouri is a great team this year.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: Zephon on March 05, 2009, 07:03:01 PM
^^Yes, I know what you mean.  I've seen them look really, really good, and also really, really bad.  Nevertheless, I am very excited for them.  They're real close to being a great team, very scrappy.  If they had a component similar to Blake Griffin, it would definitely push them over the top.  If they play in the championship of the Big 12 Tourney, I can see them as maybe a 3 or 2 seed in the NCAA, but not a 1, even if they win.  If they come up short in the B12T, they'll probably get a 5 or maybe a 4 seed.

However, congrats on great job against OU.  They did a great job of keeping Griffin from dominating like he can.  Quite a different team than a couple of nights ago against KU.  And KU looked horrible against TT.  Go figure.

I think my thing with Mizzou is that they are a well balanced team.  They don't have to have a marquee player like Griffin because honestly a Griffin would not fit the persona of the Missouri team.  There is no star so the team gets it done AS A TEAM and does not have to rely solely on one player.  We all saw how OU fell apart wehn Griffin was out of the equation.  I'm glad that Mizzou is not like that -- they are a multi-faceted team and not a one-dimensional team like OU is.  Another that could plead their case like that is kU.

Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: sdcforever on March 05, 2009, 11:37:21 PM
I guess my definition of great is different from others.  I think that Mizzou is a very good team, but really lacks that definitive road win against a top tier team (the Texas win was good, but Texas was overrated to start the season).  The truly great teams, in my mind, have strong road wins against a top tier team; the great teams, for me, are Connecticut (won at Louisville), Pittsburgh (won at Villanova and Connecticut), and North Carolina (won at Duke).  If Mizzou had won at Kansas, then it would have put them over the hump.  I'm really anxious to see how we do in the conference tournament.  In all likelihood we'll meet Oklahoma again, in what will amount to a home game for the Sooners.  If we can win that game (should it be played), then I'll feel we've moved from very good to great.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: Swoosh on March 06, 2009, 07:36:14 AM
Well I think Mizzou proved themselves with definitive road wins when they beat Georgia at Georgia, OSU at Stillwater, and definitely Texas at Austin.

I wouldn't call Texas overrated considering that they too beat OU this season.

Also how quickly we forget that Mizzou also have victories over USC and Cal this season.
Plus they swept ISU for the first time in like forever.  Hilton Colliseum is hard place for visitors to win in regardless how bad ISU is.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: sdcforever on March 06, 2009, 02:08:17 PM
^All of your points are moot as to my definition of great, though.  My definition of great hinges on a good road win against a top tier team.  OSU is good, but not top tier.  Georgia's 12-18, definitely not top tier.  Also, neither Georgia nor OSU is nationally ranked.  Texas beat OU, but at home and OU was without Griffin.  Cal's a good team, but not top tier (not nationally ranked, plus that game was in Columbia).  The win over USC was on a neutral court, and USC is good but not top tier (not nationally ranked).  In fact, all of the wins you point out are against teams that aren't even ranked right now.

I agree that ISU is a tough place to play, but they're not a top tier team and they haven't been tough at home the past two years, going 12-6 at home each of those years.

As I said before, Mizzou is a very good team.  They've made great strides this year.  I just feel they need to take one more step to justify a a top 3 seed in the NCAA tournament, and they can take that step in the conference tournament.  I'll also be interested to see how we fare tomorrow at A&M; we haven't had much luck against them in the past few years.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge

In fact, all of the wins you point out are against teams that aren't even ranked right now.

There in point lies my problem with your arguement.
If we cared about what the team was going to be ranked 2 months after we played them, there wouldn't be such a hype when the game is actually played.

Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: sdcforever on March 08, 2009, 06:36:54 PM
Well our problems against A&M continue...

This team is so inconsistent on the road.  One moment we're at home beating a top 5 team, the next we're down 26 on the road to a team that isn't even ranked.

Unless we can win the conference tournament we're looking, at best, at a 4 seed in the NCAA's.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: sdcforever on March 08, 2009, 10:19:39 PM
I've thought about it more and I think we can get a 3 seed as long as we don't lose before the semifinals (when we likely face OU).

Great scenario:  We beat OU in the semis and then exact revenge on KU in the championship game!  We are rewarded with a 2 seed. :)

Best-case scenario:  We cruise all the way to the championship, easily winning all of our games.  Because we cruised past KU and OU (OU is projected as a 1 seed), the selection committee pleasantly surprises us by giving us a 1 seed and bumping OU down to a 2 seed!!!! ;D

It was a bit of a bombshell to hear about the three parks they want to sell--WoF, California's Great Adventure, and ValleyFair.  I was most surprised about WoF, since they've invested a lot of capital into it over the past dozen years (I count five of the seven coasters in the park, including Prowler, were added since '98).  It would be interesting if HFEC bought it; I wonder if they would change it much?  WoF has some pretty dedicated season pass holders, so if they changed it a lot it might drive them away.

In other news, what a wacky day in the Big XII Tournament.

kU gets beat by Baylor.
KSU (who shouldn't have been 4th seed) gets beat by Texas.
oU exits early by getting beat by OSU

then there is MISSOURI who took care of business and is the only "top seed" left.

Yeah, it was an exciting day!  I see OU dropping to a 2 seed and KU dropping to a 4 seed.  If MU can win the tournament I see them getting a 2 seed.  They'll give the 1 seed OU has coughed up to a Big East or ACC school.  MU could be playing in KC now that both KU and OU have fallen.

Tonight's game won't be easy, in what amounts to a home game for Oklahoma State.  And I see Baylor getting by Texas tonight as well.  I've seen some giddy MU fans already celebrating a tournament championship.  However, any team that beats KU or OU is obviously dangerous.  Baylor's been dangerously good all year for the most part, and they've come out of their slump at the right time.  And lest we forget Oklahoma State was already dancing before the conference tournament.  The next two games will be a lot harder than last night's.

MIZZOU!!!!!

Big 12 Tournament Champions

73-60

Baylor jumped out to a small lead early in the game, but by the middle of the 1st half, MU had caught up, and by the end of the half had begun to exert control.  In the 2nd half they built a lead of around 10 +or- and maintained it throughout.  Great game.

Still, I can't see Mizzou garnering more than a 3 seed.  Certainly not a 1, and a 2 is really doubtful, though not absolutely out of the question.  Anyway...good luck to the Tigers in the NCAA Tournament.

GO MIZZOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd really like to see us play in KC.  The latest bracketology has us as a 3 seed and being shipped off to Boise.  Also we'd likely be playing Memphis in the Sweet Sixteen if we got there, and that'd be scary! :o  In order to go to KC you have to be a 2 seed in either the East or West bracket; there is no 3 seed in KC.

I think that in order for us to get a 2 seed either one of two things needed to happen:  we needed to win both the conference and the conference tournament, or we needed to play and beat both KU and OU in the conference tournament.  Neither of those things happened.  I know it was out of our control, but I don't think the selection committee will be impressed that we won the conference tournament by beating Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and Baylor.  I hope I'm wrong, but I've seen too many teams snubbed by the selection committee for things that were outside of their control.

^I'm definitely saddened by this. Tony has been my favorite player forever. I've got a signed Tony Gonzalez jersey hanging above my bed and it is definitely going to be hard to see him go.

But, Pioli's comments and his history in New England lead me to believe that this pick will turn into a pick in 2009. A lot of teams want to trade into the top 5 for QB Mark Sanchez and I believe one of the teams will trade with us to get into the number three spot. I am wanting this to happen because we need more than just one Day One pick.

I keep waiting for the conspiracy to rear itself in all of this.  They way the Chiefs got Vrabel/Cassel from NE, if the Falcons trade a player or a pick to NE now then my belief in a conspiracy will be warranted.  The Vrabel/Cassel thing still stinks a bit, though, for me.  Belichick never comes out on the bad end of a deal, and on the surface it looks like he got hosed.  There's something we don't know about that deal, I'm sure of it.

Whitlock at the KC Star is drinking jugs of Pioli's Kool-Aid.  He wrote an article about the TG trade saying it proves that Pioli wants to win now.  I don't think so.  There's no way trading your best offensive receiving threat and a true team leader and veteran player will help you win in 2009. ::)

Yes but was Gonzo really a team leader?  I mean I cannot dispute the fact he was a great receiver, but it was no secret that he wanted to be traded very badly -- I wonder how much of that came out in his attitude in the locker room.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge

^^I too wonder what Whitlock is doing. If CP had made the same deal that Pioli just completed, then he'd be calling for CP's head (again).

Well, the draft is complete and I'm iffy on it. It's impossible to grade a draft for at least a few years and I refuse to grade it until then. In the end we picked up:

Round 1: Pick 3 DE Tyson Jackson LSU
Round 3 Pick 67 DT Alex Magee Purdue
Round 4: Pick 102 CB Donald Washington Ohio St.
Round 5: Pick 139 OL Colin Brown Missouri (Swoosh will be happy)
Round 6: Pick 175 WR Quinten Lawrence McNeese St.
Round 7: Pick 212 RB Javarris Williams Tennessee St.
Round 7: Pick 237 TE Jake O'Connell Miami (OH)
Round 7: Pick 256 K Ryan Succop South Carolina

We definitely added depth and competition to our defense, the line in particular. Jackson will be solid and will hopefully light a fire under Glenn Dorsey's butt. I like the Brown pick but other than that, I don't really know. We didn't do much to help Cassel and we left some players on the board that I felt, could've helped us. I was much more excited about last year's draft and three players from that class have already been released. So....the jury is still out.

Boy!....We had one heck of a storm roll through here this AM.  It stretched from around I-40 in Arkansas to I-70 in Missouri, moving basically west to east.  Wind has been clocked at 60-90 mph.  Tornado watches posted all over the place.  Lots of trees down, lots of buildings damaged, several schools around the area were hit; thankfully, no major injuries that I've heard of so far.  I thank God that we had no damage at my house, although it blew the deck furniture around.

I don't go into work until noon, so I don't know of any damage there, but I did get a text message when it went through that the City was under a phase 3 alert, pretty serious.  I'll post tonight if there was any major damage at the park.

A couple of trees down, not much else.  A big tree was down in front of the taffy shop (old doll house), and quickly removed.

^Obviously the creator has much more free time on their hands than I do! If only I could find a job doing the things I enjoy as hobbies! I have tried it before though, and as soon as a hobby becomes something you HAVE to do as opposed to something you WANT to do, it is no longer fun. But I have successfully created the Wilderness church, and the hotel using Google Sketch-up 3-D software! I'll post a few still photos of them tomorrow.

IDK if this was posted anywhere, but Fire Cheef Jess told me recently that "Buckets" the 10-year old dalmation that has been a fixture on Saturdays at FITH for 10 years now has been diagnosed with a unoperable tumor that will eventually be terminal.  She has her up and down days, but will not be making as many appearances anymore, and when she does it will only be for a few hours.  This saddens me as I remember her as a pup.

Awww... That sucks. Poor doggy. :(

Well, as of Saturday, I'll be living in Springfield. Unfortunately, I don't have a car (still don't have my driver's license yet, in fact), so I'm stuck with the Springfield public bus and my own two feet. So, I'm not sure if I'll be making it to SDC as much as I'd hoped. I'm gonna try to convince my friends to come down to see me during Moonlight Madness so we can all go together.

I'll be attending the US opener in Chicago's Soldier Field for U2's 360 Tour in September.  The tour kicks off June 30 in Barcelona, Spain and I have been following the construction of the stage set pretty closely.  A picture will speak louder than words, so here you go :):

Nicknamed "The Claw", the stage is 164 feet high, doubling the size of the previous largest stage for a stadium show (for the Rolling Stones' A Bigger Bang tour, whose stage would fit under the legs of "The Claw" very nicely).  The people in the lower left-hand corner provide some perspective as to how massive this stage set is!  The spire moves up and down and rotates and has lights attached to it.  Not yet attached is a 360 degree circular video screen, which will be suspended from the "ceiling" of "The Claw".  Also missing is the stage itself and the speakers etc. are in the process of being raised and attached on each side of "The Claw".  Each speaker set (four in total, one on each side) will produce enough sound for an indoor arena concert!  Pretty incredible, huh?  I can't wait for September! ;D

So we (wife and I) went to Freestyle Music Park today in Myrtle Beach and we couldn't help thinking to ourselves that the theme of this park would be PERFECT for Celebration City.  Different sections of the park are themed to different types of music - Rock, Country, Pop, British Invasion - the rides all have on board audio systems (including the coasters).  It was so much fun and would be PERFECT for the live entertainment capital of the world.

I just think that a broad theme such as this (music) would be much easier to theme a park after instead of another "time era" like they tried with Celebration City.  Yes you have the 1880s at SDC, that doesn't mean you have to keep yourself within your "comfort zone" and do another one just more "modern" in the time you are portraying.

Seriously this would really work if they'd try it and do the theme justice.

^Yes, but to remain in theme as the "live music capital", I want to see live bands on the rides.  Sure they would take up some of the seating on the ride, and the spinning and restraints may limit their ability to play well, but who wouldn't want to see that!

The Big 12 football preseason poll is out...and Mizzou is picked 3rd in the North behind #1. Nebraska and #2. KU. :(  Let the bickering begin! ;D

2009 Big 12 Football Media Preseason Poll
North Division
1. Nebraska (17)….172
2. Kansas (12)……. 164
3. Missouri (3)…… 124
4. Colorado………. 100
5. Kansas State…… 81
6. Iowa State………. 33

South Division
1. Texas (17)……….. 174
1. Oklahoma (15)…. 174
3. Oklahoma State.. 130
4. Texas Tech………   89
5. Baylor……………..   75
6. Texas A&M ……..   33

First-place votes in parentheses. Voting done by media members who cover the conference.

Nebraska will ALWAYS get the "tradition" vote no matter what and considering they finally made it to a bowl game and won makes the media automatically think that the Huskers are "back" -- thing is, they lost their QB and some key players

kansas went to two bowl games in a row and in the mean time hell froze over.  Like it or not Tiger fans kWHO does have a decent football team.  Do I think they are better than Mizzou -- NOT F**KING WAY.  Hollywood's Senior year is this year, and I fully expect them to fall from grace after this season.

OU lost their entire starting O-line.  Bradford better lace up his dancing shoes otherwise he will be on his ass most of the season -- how fitting for the Heisman winner to fall from grace.

UT still has Colt McCoy, but has a more challenging season this year as they have to go the 'Zou and Stillwater.  They have TECH at home, which will make that game a tad easier for them then last year at Lubbock.

I still say is the team to watch is O-State as they really did not lose anyone,

I think there's more parity in the North than there was last year.  Should make things interesting.  As we saw last year with Mizzou, anything can happen.  Were we overrated?  Probably.  But I did not expect Chase Daniel to fall back to Earth the way he did the second half of the season.  That took me by surprise.  I do agree that Oklahoma State is being overlooked, at least in the preseason poll.

Cubs are getting hurt left and right, don't think you need to worry too much about them getting even into the playoffs.

I would personally love to see a Cardinals vs Yankees worldseries.  The ratings for that series would be through the roof as those are the two most followed franchises in MLB.

So apparently my dorm tower is legitimately on fire right now. I was in the study room on my floor when the alarms went off. When I stepped into the hallway it smelled like the wood fireplace back home. Lots of smoke billowing out of the basement, so I'm guessing somebody threw a lit cigarette down the trash chute. Probably have half the Norman fire dept. out here right now. Just hope they don't turn on the sprinklers!

Yup, college life. Definitely putting me off living in a big apartment building ever.

^You brought back bad memories!  So many times, even in winter, we had false fire alarms.  The frat guys would come through the building and pull them for fun in the middle of the night.  Luckily, I moved out of the dorm before it was completely renovated (including the alarm system).  Why is that lucky?  Because after the renovation there was a glitch in the alarm system and it would go off randomly; this would happen three, sometimes four, times a day!  Every time they'd have to evacuate the building, in case there really was a fire.  It took them a year to get it fixed!

I didn't want to put this in the Big 12 Football thread, even though we touched on it a while back.  It looks like the expansion of the men's NCAA basketball tournament to 96 teams is a done deal.  The only questions that remain are the tv broadcast rights and exactly when the expansion will go into effect (it could be as early as next year).  IMO, this is absolutely terrible news.  The NCAA is basically run by big $$$ BCS conference schools.  It would be great if this means that more mid-majors will get into the tournament, but that certainly won't be the case since the biggest reason for this expansion is $$$.  All it means is that bad teams from big conferences will get in, while better mid-majors will get left out.  So when the expansion goes into effect we can expect every team in the Big 12, Big 10, ACC, and Atlantic 10 will get in, while a disproportionately smaller number of mid-majors make the field.  They really need to have stipulations, such as any team must have at least a .500 record (overall and in the conference), and a team that wins the conference in the regular season gets an automatic bid (even if they lose in the conference tournament).

The should also shorten the regular season, which is already pretty meaningless.  What happens to the NIT?  They're going to be left with really bad teams.  In case it's escaped you, this expansion adds 31 games to a tournament in which no one watches the first two rounds anyway. ::)

"Avatar" surpassed "Titanic" on Tuesday as the all-time domestic box office champ.  It already held the all-time foreign and world-wide box office titles.  It has done this in only 47 days of release.  No matter how this is spun (looking at attendance figures and the markup for 3D, for instance) this is an absolutely astounding achievement.

Here's a good article that puts everything into perspective:

Yeah, I'm happy to finally see Titanic knocked off its throne, even though ticket-count-wise, Avatar is still quite behind it. But then, there aren't gaggles of girls going to see Avatar 60x in theaters like they did with Titanic (and I am *not* exaggerating that number; I'd actually once come across a website where a girl had taken pics/scans of ALL her Titanic ticket stubs... O. M. G.).

While I understand where Avatar's detractors are coming from when it comes to originality of plot ("Dances With Wolves/Ferngully/Pocahontas/etc. in Space") and stuff (Unobtanium... REALLY? *laughs*), I still thoroughly enjoyed the movie both times I went to see it.

And it really is a movie that is best seen in 3D, though as a tip, try to find a theater that uses RealD instead of Dolby Digital 3D... The RealD glasses are SOOOO much better (especially for those of us unfortunates who wear prescription glasses and can't wear contacts; they are also better in general comfort and having less reflection of lights that are behind you, like, oh, the projector), and I had far less trouble adjusting my eyes to the 3D as well as no headache when I saw it with the RealD.

Box office take should always be measured in tickets sold, not revenue. To measure revenue ignores inflation. A movie today could surpass a movie from 1980 while only selling one third as many tickets.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: Joy on February 05, 2010, 05:26:09 PM
Yeah. Unfortunately, the farther back you go, the harder it is to find accurate attendance counts for movies, which is why they use ticket inflation for adjustment, which doesn't always work because of how varying ticket prices can be from one week to the next and from one coast to the other.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge

Box office take should always be measured in tickets sold, not revenue. To measure revenue ignores inflation. A movie today could surpass a movie from 1980 while only selling one third as many tickets.

You can't ignore the feat, though.  Especially since there are so many distractions now even compared to fifteen years ago.  Cable and satellite TV, the internet, etc.  That's why inflation and attendance figures aren't a good, objective measure either.  Like you said, Joy, attendance figures aren't tracked very well even today.  All they can really give are estimates.  However, for a movie today, with all the other distractions and ways to occupy our time, to have over 61 million in estimated attendance and gross over $600 million in six weeks is astounding!

If you just go by inflation, then "Gone With the Wind" would be the top grosser with over $1.4 billion domestic.  But it came out in 1939, and TV was brand new back then.  There were far fewer distractions in the way of media seventy years ago.  In truth, there really is no good, objective measure for box office performance.  That's why everything should be taken into account to give perspective and context.  And when you take into account all of the distractions of our modern world, what "Avatar" has done is one of the greatest box office runs in history.

They're already talking about Super Bowl XLV.  The Colts are early favorites to win it at 13:2.  The Saints are 10:1.  And our local teams, the Chiefs and Rams, are tied for the longest odds with a couple of other teams at 100:1.  It is not a good time to be a Rams or Chiefs fan.

Odds mean nothing, though.  When the Rams won it all in 1999 they were 400:1! :o  That Super Bowl win actually caused a few betting firms to go under due to the large amounts being paid out, and is the main reason we don't see odds that steep anymore.

In case you haven't heard, there will probably be a lockout in 2011 and no NFL season.  The labor agreement between the owners and players expires after next season, and the owners want to increase their share of the profits.  Currently the players receive 52% of the profits; the owners want to cut that to 34% with the next agreement.  Obviously, the players don't think that's fair, but the owners don't want to budge or compromise.  We'll see, but it's not looking good for the 2011 season. :-\
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: Coaster on February 08, 2010, 10:26:25 PM
Those odds don't mean much to me for a couple reasons.
a)You must be an optimist to be a Chiefs fan.
b)The NFL from year to year is as unpredictable as anything.

As for reports of no football two years from now, I wouldn't read much into it. I think that a deal will get done at the last possible minute. They are talking doom and gloom right now but there is  just too much money at stake for them not to get a deal done. But there is still that little part of me in the back of my head that is worried there won't be football in 2011. I can't live without my Chiefs!  :-[

In saying that, 2010 will be an uncapped year which will make things very interesting in free agency for every team.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge
Post by: sdcforever on February 10, 2010, 08:11:09 AM
^Actually, now that I've read more about what's going on with the labor dispute, the likelihood of football in 2011 is not good.  Here's an exchange between a player and the new head of the NFLPA, DeMaurice Smith, from a forum held during this past weekend:

"When Cincinnati receiver Chad Ochocinco asked the first question of the day — how serious a threat was it that the owners would lock out the players in 2011 — Smith gave him a blunt answer.

"On a scale of 1 to 10," he said with a perfectly timed dramatic pause, "It's a 14.""

The broadcast deal the owners have in place for 2011 guarantees them $5 billion even if no games are played that year. :-\

"His strongest point of the day was that the NFL has no incentive to negotiate with the NFLPA because the league is scheduled to receive $5 billion from its network television deals even if no games are played in 2011.

That, he says, is all the proof he needs to show that NFL owners are preparing for a long lockout. "Has any one of the prior deals included $5 billion to not play football?" Smith asked, referring to previous contracts that were extended or redone. "The answer's no.""

So, be prepared for a lockout in 2011.  It's clear that the owners and the league are putting everything into place.  It's the NFLPA versus the NFL.

^There is still awhile to get a deal done, and I think it will happen.

But, we're guaranteed this year of football and the my favorite part of the offseason, the draft. I've created my own mock draft on an awesome website I found on a snow day this week. It was really fun and it is interesting to read other fan's ideas and opinions and not "the expert's."

^I like the look of your draft.  I think you're right in predicting that Bradford will be the only QB taken early, with Clausen being taken before McCoy (due to his injury) outside of the top ten.  I think McCoy will be taken in the second round (perhaps by the Rams?).

The only big question is will the Rams take Suh or Gerald McCoy at #1?  Suh is more instinctive and stronger, but McCoy is quicker and more disruptive.  The Rams may decide to take McCoy since they really, really, really need a DT that can penetrate the line.  It's a tough choice for the Rams.  If they do take McCoy then I think the Bucs will take Suh.
Title: Re: The SDCFans Lounge

^Thanks. I think the Rams would get a ton of flack if they passed up on Suh for McCoy. Everyone thinks Suh is the number one guy but i definitely agree with you. McCoy could be just as good.

As for the Chiefs, I'm really hoping Berry drops to us. We need o-linemen but we also need playmakers and Berry is a great playmaker. Similar to Troy Polamalu, Ed Reed, and the late Sean Taylor. He could be that good. But if Berry is gone by the fifth pick, I have no problem with us drafting Okung or even trading down.

^I agree with you about the Chiefs.  Berry would be a great pick if he drops to #5.  We really need o-linemen and playmakers on defense.

As for the Rams, I'm curious if they'll trade down for more picks.  The Rams need pretty much everything and, if they can draft well (they have not been the past three or four years, and it shows), the more picks the better.  I'm really hoping they draft a QB in the second round.  Bulger's backups, Null and Boller (both got extended playing time due to his injury), showed that neither have the qualities of a starter.  We really want to sign Vick, but it'd be nice to have someone new who has promise to step in in case Vick gets injured.  That's probably the only good thing about being as bad as the Rams--you really get to test the depth of your team.  Everyone gets a chance to play. :-\

^Yeah, I'm hoping the Rams can get Vick too. They need a big name guy to be the face of their team. Even if he is a two or three year option, he would give them more leeway in the draft to pick up other players at needed positions.

This post continues one that was taking place in the "Big XII Football 2009" thread, but I thought I'd move it here since it really doesn't apply to that subject.

This is a great article from the Post-Dispatch regarding the impending shuffling of schools and conferences.  Key quote:  "College sports aren’t all about student-athletes. College sports are all about big TV contracts. The power schools and power conferences want more, more, more."

It really is a great article.  Read more here:

Regarding the Big Ten expansion, apparently they have just finished analyzing potential teams and five have passed financial muster:  Missouri, Rutgers, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse.

That was an awesome game...now for West Virginia to make it in, and all the so-called powerhouses are eliminated.

Almost time for me to start filling in my bracket!  LOL

^Haha! My bracket was ruined from day one!

So who do you guys have winning it all tonight? My mind says Duke, but I hope it is Butler!! Always gotta root for the under dog unless Mizzou is in it--and they were out of it a long time ago.

Butler? No way! Duke all the way!

Nah, I'm just teasing. Actually I'm just going to root for the winning team. That way I win either way!  :D

Changed my top 10 in my mock draft a bit.

Rams- Sam Bradford
Lions- Suh
Bucs- Gerald McCoy
Redskins- Russell Okung
CHIEFS- Eric Berry
Seahawks- Bryan Bulaga
Browns- Rolando McClain
Raiders- Bruce Campbell
Buffalo- Jimmy Clausen
Jacksonville- Derrick Morgan

If there are no trades, which I think there will be, I think this is how it will go down. I've been reading reports of Seattle and Cleveland both liking Clausen. Could be smoke screens, but either way, he will go in the top 10 and I really think three offensive tackles will go in the top 10.

^^You got four of the ten picks right with your mock draft.  Not bad.  I was shocked that Tebow was selected not just before, but well before, Clausen.  I also thought that Colt McCoy would go in the second, not the third, round.

I was also very surprised with all those things. I was also a little surprised we didn't take Clausen with our first second round choice.

And I really like Tim Tebow, but I'm not at all happy with the team he went to...
