Title: Refillable Mug?
Post by: scrapah1 on March 09, 2015, 03:30:08 PM
Hi Everyone,

Apologies if I am missing it but what are the rules now on the refillable mugs? Is it certain years that can still be refilled (like 2011 and older) or ???

Thanks So Much!

If you buy 1 this year, you can get refills this year.....  Next year, buy another 1...

OR, for the time being they are still honoring refill mugs from past years, Go garage saleing and find a mug 5 or 10 years old.

When they announced this a few years ago, my interpretation was they would only honor the current season. There's a thread on here somewhere about. However, they have not been enforcing this that I have seen yet. They have refilled anything I've handed them (as long as it was theirs) and honored the refill price.

I would think it would be a legal issue.  If it says "refillS $1.50" without stating a date, wouldn't it have to be refillable all the time?  If it has a date, such as 2014, that would be different IMO.

The man at the Ice Cream Parlor told me they only will refill this year's mugs. Older mugs can only be filled with water, nothing else. They stopped refilling all old mugs back in 2011. They do this because they want money, more than likely.

Wrong. But I'd expect nothing less from you anymore.

My $1 refill Buzzsaw Falls mug has always been honored.

Even charging just a dollar for a refill of coke or ice tea they're making a profit.  I can't think the frozen lemonade, as good as it is, is very expensive to make.

I'd think they could go the route of Holiday World and just have "free drinks"

Hey there, everybody!  We've had our fun, but we don't need to continue this back-and-forth.  The forum needs to enhance our SDC experience, not become a place where things escalate into personal attacks.  To be clear, we can disagree.  In addition, we each need to be humble enough to realize that we could be wrong at times.  And try to stay on topic, and stop taking things so personally.  It's OK to "listen" and not comment about everything.

To be clear, that comment was for you, as well, Laroy.

Back to the Refillable Mug topic please...

I have always had my mugs refilled, even at Christmas with hot chocolate and the works.  We are fortunate to have some older mugs that are refilled for a reasonable price, and the price printed on the mugs is always the price that is honored, even in December 2014.

Ok, someone needs to tell me where you all are going and who you are seeing that is bending the rules for you and taking the old mugs. I need to see this guy so he can hit me up with something. I see all kinds of people with Buss Saw Falls mugs but i didnt know they would take them.

You do not have to see anyone special. Just take your old refillable mug. Prior to 2013 and get it refilled. I still have old glass mugs that they refill for .75 cents. No one is getting special treatment. Mugs after 2013 are only good in the year they were purchased.

We haven't bought a new mug in years.  We took 4 old mugs with is in March 2015 and we were able to fill them anywhere with anything. Most didn't even ask us what the price printed on the mug was.  They just charged us 1.50 each time.

I went to the HW website and didn't see any info on that- how exactly does it work?  do they issue you a mug at the gate or do they just give you a throwaway cup each time you get a drink?

I take our old mugs with us, and sometimes they honor the stated price ($1.25), and sometimes they don't.  I'll have to start paying attention to who won't honor it.  I have pointed out the $1.25 refill price before and was told that it has changed and all refills are the same.  That was last year.

They have drink oasis stations strategically placed around the park and you get a disposable cup at each station.

Getting a team to be consistent with so many different mugs and 50+ years of different prices is very difficult. When I was in F&B there was a lot of time spent learning how many ounces each "body" of cup held and determining the price based on that. It is also hard to audit, therefore hard to hold the employees accountable for charging the correct price. The less dedicated employees will just charge what they want and honor what they want to avoid confrontation. I see a complete dismissal of the old mug program in the near future. It will be current year mug, or no mug. Or they could go with what WA has done. $.99 for the current year and $1.99 for previous years. Of course this will only work with mugs after 2011 and they will have to continue to use the same size mug to make it successful.

You are right Duelist. They created quite a monstrosity over the years with all the different mugs and prices. Really they have no one to fault but themselves because of all the confusion. I can see them discontinuing the entire refill program to get back to a manageable system. It will not effect me in any way since we do not drink sugar drinks  at all and just have water. I never carry my old mugs except at christmas time to get coffee. You can tell that some employes have never been trained on the old glass mugs and they get this I do not know what to do look on their face when I bust it out.

And to think that I got rid of a couple of glass ones a few years ago in a purging frenzy.  What was I thinking????  There was nothing better than the root beer floats in a glass mug of years gone by.

To be perfectly honest, I very rarely, if ever, use the mugs I buy at SDC. I'll use it when I buy it 'cause it comes with a drink, but after that, it gets washed at home and put into the box (for now) with all my other collected SDC mugs. I have a yellow Grand Exposition mug that I usually re-use because I was collecting just Christmas mugs back then, so I use that one but have very rarely gotten it refilled with anything but water, mostly because soda dehydrates, and I am always needing lots of water when I go to places like SDC or I'll faint.

Back in the day, with the glass mugs, and i think with some of the plastic ones, the pitch at the saloon and echo holler included a "forever" price.
I still use old mugs, and you might be able to find a few Christmas themed mugs still for sale from the last year they were considered "forever" mugs.
At one time, a slushy employee told me that since icee was not available when the forever mugs were available they wouldnt fill it. That was two or three years ago now.

I do not have any glass mugs, but most if not all my plastic mugs are prior to 2013. I do not think any of them have a refill price printed on them and I honestly do not pay attention to what they charge me to refill. If it would put an end to the confusion, I personally would be fine with one set refill price for any mug: this year, last year or 1975 as long as it's still cheaper than a throw away cup. Just my .02
