Title: Original Silver Dollar City Entrance Sign photo?
Post by: DallasKeith on December 02, 2014, 07:41:40 AM
Wow ... a message board with some real fans!! I grew up going to Silver Dollar City every single summer from the late 60s thru the 70s ... we always stayed south of the park at the Red Eagle Resort with the great individual cabins. My parents and their friends, who used to go with us every time were even offered the chance to purchase the property, which they declined ... what regrets! Anyway, since it is very apparent there are true fans here, is there a photo floating around out there of the original Silver Dollar City entrance sign? It was the one with the miner and the pickax ... I fondly remember seeing this as we approached the park, coming up from Branson, and then again right at the parking lots for the park. I've been working on a project for the family, and would LOVE to have a photo of this sign to include. All of my internet searches have been in vain ... reaching out here in the hopes someone might have captured this moment in time. Thanks in advance from a old, but new fan!

Pintrader - Wow ... just wow. I'd no idea I would see a pic so quickly, much less at all. Kinda emotional right now - you've no idea how much this means. Thanks doesn't quite cover it ... wishing you the best of holidays and everything thereafter!!!

This group is like a big family for the most part. Lots of us have been hanging around for several years, and we generally even get along most of the time  ;D

It sure feels that way, History Buff! Thanks for the warm welcome ... and yes, sanddunerider, I was just stunned at how fast the pic appeared, thanks to pintrader ... this after years of searching. Obviously I was looking in the wrong places. Nice to have a place to share the memories with others who appreciate it just as much. We spent many years going every summer ... I have just the tiniest of memories of the park just being a craft village with free admission (anyone wanna confirm this or say I'm crazy?) ... amazing how much, yet how little has changed, the core essence remains. Always loved to "dine in the mine", recall the float trip fondly, remember how I wanted no part of "Fire in the Hole" when it opened due to a fear of coasters (long over that!). We'd also always tie the visits with Mutton Hollow & Dogpatch ... such fun times.

Hi Junior - Even before your invite, I discovered your site here ... just some great pics!!! Ironically, before I found this board, I was desperate enough yesterday to actually write SDC and ask if they had the image of the original entrance sign that Pintrader so kindly shared. Anyway, I heard back today from Suzanne @ SDC, who was just wonderful ... even though she did not have access to that original sign image, she did offer up their trove of 60s/70s images to me ... ask, and ye shall receive! I've no idea what she has, or if she'll need me to provide specific attractions/sights to see if they exist. But I did reply, and await what she will say - not sure how unique they will be for the die hard fans here, but as long as I'm not violating any copyrights, I'd be very open to sharing these with the group.

I have a few bags, and tickets from 69-71 with the axe man logo, and my only clear photo of the sign with the axe man is from a few years prior as it is the same image but says "Marvel Cave Park"
And Silver Dollar City below that (imagine the text on Pin's image above being switched).

I remember those bags, Rube ... that is so cool you still have them, as well as the tickets. I only wished I kept some of those things as well. Not sure why that image has stayed with me all these years, but it's what I always remembered when we visited.

... And while I am thinking to do so, may everyone here have the happiest of holiday season!

Does anyone remember the water standpipes that was at the parking lot to the park entrance that had the miner with ax and a park guide on it?

I’m still somewhat confused about Pintraders’s photo because I don’t know where that was taken (exactly) or what direction the camera was facing. It looks like the ‘S’ curve that they recently bypassed. But if that is true, it would seem the arrow on the sign is pointing the wrong direction. Back in the 1960s and early 70s, I remember several signs on 76 with the miner pointing the way. It seems like one (or more) may have said something like, “You are almost there.”

In the early 1960s, Indian Point Road cut across directly in front of Wilderness Church and the McHaffie homestead. There was a parking lot in the square where the gazebo is now. By 1963, they closed that parking lot and opened another one where Flooded Mine, the depot, and the (old) woodcarvers barn is. Eventually, a new highway was constructed to route traffic around SDC to Indian Point. So, there have been several different places to enter SDC in the past.

Another thing: it seems that the miner on the old signs morphed into an ax carrying woodsman somewhere along the way. I like to know when that change happened.

For some reason I've never thought about that.  The whole thing is more mine-themed than woodsman-themed, yet the adopted logo is a log and ax.  Curious.

Location of the sign is the main entrance, with the camera facing west on Hwy. 76. I would guess photo is pre 1977, but that is as close as I can get on that.

Seems like it would almost have to be at 76 and Indian Point Rd for the signs to make sense.

Yes, by main entrance I meant the 76/Indian Pt. intersection, sorry.

I knew what you meant.  ;D I was just trying to reinforce your statement for those that might not have.

The side of the photo has a 1973 date. That would have been the year the photo was developed and printed.
