Title: Where in the City? (2014 Edition)
Post by: History Buff on March 22, 2014, 07:29:45 PM
I'll get the game started.  I only have a couple of pictures, but we can still begin.  If I run out, someone else can provide some.

I dunno, Jack's Sandwich Shop? tinmann's little wink at the word "employee" makes me think this is near somewhere that employees frequent, and I seem to recall (but not sure how accurate it is) there being an employee-only area near Jack's.

I agree entirely.

We're giving this one to DollarCityBoy, with ithai at a narrow second.  This picture was taken from the Red Gold side facing the Waterboggan tower, with the shed just to the right of the tower.  So now there is a possibly-unprecedented super-tie for first place.

Its weird, because I would have never gotten this one.  But with the clearing taking place in that area, my eyes were focused on that area the last time we were at the park. I was peaking through every crack in the fence I could find, and taking pics along the backside of GG.

That's true, DCB, but since it was the back of the Boatworks building, I was just looking for the toy shop and I gave it to him.  If he wants to give you half of his point, I'll let him, but the point belongs to mhg now, so I'll leave it up to him.  He'll keep his resounding lead either way.

That brings up another point though, but I'll put it in the 2015 thread.

Oh gosh no; I didn't mean to imply I wanted the point or even 1/2 a point. I was just confused on where this actually was...I was trying to picture how Courthouse (or Playhouse) tied into the Toy shop thats all.

I'm guessing Lumbercamp as well.  The building in the background sure looks like it, but then the building in the right corner throws it off.  Haven't paid attention to that area much this year, but I don't remember a condiments stand over there.

My only other guesse would be Valley Road food cout area

CHANGE MY VOTE
Its the side deck of the toy shop there in the distance and is along side the catfish place near the LROTO. That picture was probably taken from the line area of the ride looking towards the toy store.  That looks like the deck around it.

You wisely changed your vote, mhg.  The picture was specifically taken from the entrance to the LR queue, where there are some benches to sit upon as you laugh at what some people choose to wear (or not wear) in public.

A little off topic, but is the coin shop reopened for this year? This was our favorite shop and we were sad to find it closed last year. My understanding is that it was closed due to the health issues of a family member but not for sure.

...And here's a little known fact:

This rare sphere of marble is actually hollow.  Most spheres such as this one, when cracked open, have yielded treasures of creamy milk.  Depending upon the regions in which they are found, others are filled with tobacco, baby powder, and a strange substance similar to Silly Putty.

Tony Orlando discovered this particular marble sphere while camping and fishing near Hannibal, Missouri.  Returning with a secretive excavation crew, he carefully extracted the sphere from a rock outcropping just out of sight of the river.  Orlando financed a study to to scans of the sphere in attempt to discern the contents of the hollow structure.  When it was found to contain a combination of chicken feathers and hillbilly whiskers, it was decided no one should open it.  Besides, what better place for a hollow sphere filled with chicken feathers and hillbilly whiskers than the Ozarks.

The integrity of the sphere is kept in check by a gentle stream of water - enhanced with microscopic amounts of preservation chemicals.  Visitors to Silver Dollar City often rub their hands against the sphere in an attempt to find flaws in the structure.  There is a hardly-believable legend that the ancient contents will transform to pure silver upon contact with the air.  As no other sphere with feathers and whiskers has ever been discovered, there is no way to dispute their claim without destroying this rare find.

It is interesting that that is the only ADA elevator lift in the park.  I was thinking of how many WOF has and it is basically every coaster and a lot of their rides.  SDC stations are basically on the "ground level" and do not require a lift.

The points don't matter, and I have plenty of them to administer, but I'm not looking for a description of the building - just a location.  For the previous round, the answer of the fence at Wilson's Farm cold have been anywhere within the farm area.  For this one, I deemed the location was specific enough, since it did not mention an entire area, but a single feature.

...But like I say, I have plenty of them to administer, so if I need to give mhguy77 a point, too, then I will.  Not a problem.

The NEW Up-to-Datiest Score:
10 points  - Pintrader
6 points  - Swoosh

I've got to get better at catching these quicker. PinTrader took my answer. It is on top of the building just to what I think would be north of where they used to do the balloon toss (the building with the shooting gallery games on the way to the Giant Swing) I think. Don't know if they still have the balloon toss or not.

Don't get silly Swoosh, just because you don't like my explanation.  The answer to Where in the City? cannot be "Silver Dollar City". :'(

Now, you guys are just trying to make it difficult for our judges.  I need your help on this one:  Pintrader identified this photo as being the "new game place" on the path to Wilson's Farm.  Is it?  Which is the new game - the pig game or the chicken game?  If the new game is the chicken game, then Pintrader has identified the wrong game on the path, and jbb will take the point.  If the new game is the pig racing, the Pintrader gets the point.  I guess I can't picture which is newer since I don't pay that much attention to the games.

By the way, the picture was taken through the trees from the FitH queue.
Title: Re: Where in the City? (2014 Edition)
Post by: pintrader on July 17, 2014, 01:24:28 PM
I think I can answer that!  It use to be on the old pig game.  I was thinking they did away with that and made the new game which was the chicken game.  If both games still exist then joshblakebran should receive the point.  That is if his location was correct  :)
Title: Re: Where in the City? (2014 Edition)
Post by: pintrader on July 17, 2014, 01:36:35 PM
Someone also asked which snack area was I talking about.  Yes!  there are two snack areas across from Crossroads Pizza.  I said the new snack area because the other one has been there for quite a bit longer.  I thought that was good enough for the location.  But I can see the confusion.

Ah, Gill!  I was prepared to give more clues.  I started with 567 (Did you google it?), as in 567 feet long.  Most people were way off target.  They really were just wildly shooting into the reeds.  As you finally did select the correct answer, you are hereby rewarded the point.

It's the earthquake water fountain, but Hollywood has the correct location.

I've always thought of it as the best place to fill up my thermal cups. Seems to me to be the coldest water fountain in the park. I love the talking bucket next to it as well!

The corkscrew walkway that is over the RR tracks. Kind of leads from midtown down to where the old kiddie coaster was located. As for the location of the photo I would have actually got this one, but to late to the party ;D

You're right about that.  School started and those of us who teach for the government (Read:  public school) are under more stress than a human can physically or mentally endure.  I'll try to get something going for you.

I cannot believe we are already 13 days into the new school year.
I feel like I have been in a full out sprint since the first day of school.  I come home and completely collapse.  So. Not. In. Teaching Shape. Yet.

This marks my second year out of teaching, and what I've noticed the most is that school jargon (teacher talk) has already changed since I left; meaning the titles of programs, acronyms, new teacher requirements (common core was being put into effect when I left).  I still have teacher friends call to ask me questions sometimes, and I have to tell them that I don't know what they're talking about!

Get it when your life get back into a rhythm. I don't teach but do tech support at a university. My life has felt turned upside down for too long now. I'm only now getting back to the city this next weekend. Its been since memorial day weekend since I last went.
