Title: Attendance 2014..
Post by: sanddunerider on March 16, 2014, 07:41:00 AM
Well the city was off to a good start this year, with 9500 on Friday,  and 11500 on sat.. (give or take)..  But with cold rain and threat of colder temps and snow maybe later, wont be very busy today probably..

Hope it's not too busy this Thursday and Friday. :) Quick question, how does everyone know what the attendance is? I'm used to going to Six Flags and Cedar Fair parks where those numbers are usually kept secret until the end of the year or sometimes they don't release the numbers at all to the public. Just wondering.

Well technically they are not for public knowledge but seem to make their way here regardless.

All you have to do is ask someone at a computer terminal.  Either they will tell you, or they will say something like, "I haven't heard."  Tram operators seem to know, as well.

A member of this site has a friend that works on park, and that friend regularly gives the numbers to our member. The workers on the park are given a projected attendance list, which helps them plan ahead so they have enough staff on duty, and due to weather and other things that happen, that figure changes, of course. At some point in the day, the PTB let supervisors and team leaders know what the actual attendance is, again, primarily for staffing purposes.

All I can say is----the years that I worked at SFSL. I worked in the admissions dept. (You would think that the admissions dept would know the attendance at any given time). Well This dept at SFSL relates to ticket sales, ticket takers, GR, and season pass processing. At SFSL the admissions supervisors came around to every turnstile (at the ticket takers gates) on the hour every hour and took the numbers, then went and calculated the results.

Now I always was "nosey-rosey" so I would call my supervisor at least once a day and ask attendance numbers. They "never-ever" knew the answer.  However, I also had a friend (supervisor) in RIDES.  He "always" knew the attendance numbers. HMMMMMM...

Of course "as employees", we could ask the days attendance as we was clocking out, and always receive an answer.

Now realize that is how SFSL operates to its employees. I have no idea how the general public can obtain attendance numbers from SFSL. --- I do not know how certain people obtain SDC attendance info either. However I imagine the internal workings at SDC gather the numbers in a similar way, how they release that info, "Im clueless".

I work with an old-timer at a manufacturing facility in Springfield who also worked part time on weekends at SDC for many years (he is now retired from SDC). I usually saw him directing traffic outside the park, or around guest relations. He always knew how many visitors had come to the park every weekend and shared those numbers with any of us SDC-goers who cared to hear them.  It's obviously not much of a closely guarded secret. He'd always give us a heads-up as well when we probably didn't want to visit the park.

Given that every ticket is scanned by a bar code reader upon admission, surely those readers are networked into a mainframe somewhere and the information is automatically being gathered and compiled electronically.  It would surprise me if managers in the business office weren't seeing that data in real time.  I think the only question is who they are sharing it with.  Makes sense that supervisors and parking lot transport would be hearing updates throughout the morning.

It probably goes into a server these days rather than a mainframe, but I get your meaning,

Hey everyone!
In May my husband and I are going to SDC. I haven't been in 11 years, it will be my hubby's first trip. We fly in the 26th and leave the 30th. I know there have been a lot of changes just curious what a typical crowd forecast is like that time of year?  Thanks for any and all help!

Swoosh is right, memorial weekend will be busy, but you will miss that...  I wouldn't expect "huge" crowds during the weekdays, not all schools will be out yet.....  there are a lot of snow days to be made up this year. :)

Memorial weekend is going to be a bit rough, but I always enjoy SDC even on crowded days. Just take it slow and don't worry about cramming in everything since that will only cause the crowds to stress you out. The weather can certain change everything at the drop of a hat.

Mother's day looks good to me. You've got a chance of rain in the morning, which is actually good for you since it might scare some people away. Then it's a nice warm day. Shouldn't be terribly crowded, though colleges are just getting out. Sundays are always good for lower crowds anyway.

Glad to hear you're making it back, ahorizon.

Well, we can't wait. We were suppose to go twice last year to see the Christmas lights but Mother Nature had other plans. Then we were suppose to go earlier this year but had a family emergency. Been too long. I think it's do or die this weekend! Bring on the cinnamon rolls, and the strawberries n' cream, and the bbq, and the root beer floats, and the strawberry jam… and I guess I should finally get around to Outlaw Run.

Anyone have a guesstimate of how busy Wednesday the 15th (tomorrow)will be?  Not much of a July-August tripster because of the crowds, but wondering what a Wednesday in July that is forecast to be cool will look like?

We went once in July and needed a catwalk to get around the crowd, and don't want to repeat that experience.   ;D

Thanks in advance.

Does anybody have the attendance estimates from this weekend (July 19th and 20th)?

We went on the 16th and it was fairly crowded, I think I heard a citizen say they were around 12,000 at 2:00...Thunderation had a 30 minute wait on Wednesday.

We also went on Saturday. At 2:00 the place was packed. Since we went earlier in the week we just picked up the stuff we missed and headed out early to get home, It was just before 3:00 and there were tons of people just getting to the park. From the looks of things Saturday had to be a really big day for them.

Just a reminder, we are getting into "guilt trip season"
What's a "guilt trip"?  It's where parents realize that school is quickly approaching and they haven't done squat with their kids all summer -- so as a last resort they throw everyone in the car and take them to the local park.  They are upset all day due to the long lines, "expensive prices", high heat, and the fact (this the parents) that they have to be there in the first place.  They don't think of anyone but themselves and are like bulls in a china shop trying to SEE EVERYTHING and are upset if they have to wait because THEY'RE ON VACATION **** IT!

So just remember that when you go to the parks.  They will be busier and full of people who are ruder than normal... but just smile at them and think to yourself "it's almost harvest festival" -- a magical time when people who enjoy the park because the park is awesome reemerge and don't have to deal with the "tourists"

You're right, the park will get busier as the start of school approaches.  I don't think all these people are deadbeat parents who are on a "guilt trip", however.  When my sisters and I were still in school we went every August because that's when we all could go.  We planned it every year in advance.  I'm sure there are a lot of families that do that.  With softball, baseball, summer camps and sports camps, the 4th, etc. this is just the best time for many families to go.  I'm sure most of the parents are not angry they have to be there with their kids in the first place.  Most really enjoy it, but the bad apples always stand out more, don't they?  Well at least there's more revenue for the park we love to operate and expand.
Now that we are all grown up we go in June because it is a better time to go, then pick one other random time a year to head down.
I agree that it's dumb when people are surprised to find the park busy and get mad about it, however.

We're in the thick of camp season here at Cali.  I have band camp this week and next week in the morning.  Basketball Camp is this week immediately following my camp (noon).  Football Camp is at 5 tonight this week.  I have some poor boys who do all 3.  So they start off with weight lifting before band then go basically straight through the day.  We'll see how much they are dragging on Friday.

Oh and next week we have Softball and Volleyball Camp in the evenings.  Yay!  School!

There were close to 26,000 clicks on Saturday -- but if you know anything about attendance (employees will understand what I am talking about when it comes to "counting" clicks), it was probably a lot more than that in the actual park.

We've been trying to cut down on posting attendance figures this year, sorry.

#1 it takes a special phone number and code to get them (which no one on here should have)
#2 that information is not for the GP to know (even though some employees still do it)
#3 the PTB are really cracking down on outsiders getting information like that

Thank you sir Swoosh. We might not always see eye to eye but I really hate it when people, outside of PR personnel, post attendance figures. It is important that those numbers stay internal only because the company wants them too. There is no other explanation nessissary.

I was under the impression that you could get estimated attendance figures just by calling the park or asking any given park official who would know, but I've never actually tried. I know they have never actually published definitive yearly figures, but I haven't seen any indication outside of this thread that they would care about the unofficial daily figures. I'm sure things have changed since the downturn though...

I do understand at least a few of the worries concerning having too much of this information out there. A lot of potential competitors/investors like to cite published attendance figures from nearby attractions in their business plans and proposals.

I guess I should finally get a definitive answer on whether this thread is appropriate or not.
Title: Re: Attendence 2014..
Post by: Junior, too! on August 08, 2014, 04:37:06 PM
Back in my days no guests asked about the figures. Nobody cared to ask, anyway. Hardest day was a 20,000 day, a hot summer day with a packed house. The park today sometimes gets over 25,000 per day...I was on park one such day last year. That is a big crowd. We had a chart hanging on a bulletin board with estimated attendance, used to staff at the appropriate level. Sometimes I looked at it to figure how hard we would get beaten each day...Saturdays always were worst. The PTB don't like the figures released...they consider it private info, and don't like competition to know many details, either.

Whenever we ask someone - store operators, tram drivers, etc. - they tell us the number.  It seems that it must be easily available on their computers.  That may help them in making determinations about the number of employees they need for the day.  Sometimes they will tell us they haven't heard yet, but they have never told us they weren't allowed to give us that information, and they have never told us that they didn't have access to it.

A few years back there was a phone number that could be called at any time from the " in house" phone system that would give you the number of guests on park.   I would not see why it is not still in operation.   Private business information should be respected however if they are doing well they should not be too upset.  After all people flock to where others are so the knowledge of popularity works for the park.

Thinking about taking a super nice family with us to SDC on the bring a friend passes (We needed 5 and had four).  We were going to take them Friday, but had a change of plans.

Thinking about taking them Saturday, but since they don't get to go very often I didn't want to take them unknowingly during a mega crowd Saturday.  We haven't went on a Saturday in years and was wondering if anyone knows what to expect this Saturday Sept. 13?

thanks in advance!

We just got back from attending OTC this past weekend (November 15 & 16). Attendance Saturday was about 5300. Attendance Sunday was an amazing 1300 (numbers are the last I heard). Of course the reason was the weather. I have some amazing pictures of the lights down the paths with no guests in the pictures. Almost looks like a pr shot. Only rides running Sunday were FITH, Flooded Mine and Frisco. Last couple trains of the day only had a couple dozen riders.
