Title: Branson Food
Post by: History Buff on March 23, 2008, 08:00:44 PM
Where do you just have to eat when you're in Branson?

What should we avoid?

Cantina Laredo is the best Mexican restaurant in Branson. The food is not greasy like most Mexican restaurant and has flavor.

Moon River Grill has great art work, lots of Andy Warhol and great drinks. It is a good place to go late because it is open till midnight and one on weekends.

^Copper, where is Cantina Laredo located?

We always go to Cakes n' Cream for dessert.

Everytime we go to Branson we always try to try something new. Last time we ate at a barbeque joint that was really good but I can't remember the name now.

Cantina Laredo is located in the Branson Landing. You can sit on their patio and watch the water and fire show.

I go to Branson four times a week. I live in Springfield and the only thing my friends want to do is go to SDC, Table Rock Lake Tanger Mall and the Branson Landing. They make fun of the shows; I guess the shows really aren’t for the college aged crowd.

Avoid:  Uptown Cafe:  We've been there when it wasn't busy around 8 PM and it took forever for our food to arrive.  When it did arrive it was cold.   Steak 'N Shake:  The food has never been very good the times we've been there.  Once during a rush they seated us, then proceeded to inform us that they ran out of forks and spoons!  :-\

Musts:   Cracker Barrel Old Country Store:  Great atmosphere, great food, and great service.  What more do you need?   Landry's Seafood House:  A unique place to eat.  It's a place where you can go in jeans and t-shirts or more formal attire and fit in.  Great food and the service is always wonderful!

Shorty Small's BBQ is really good. We've ate there twice I think.

^We've ate at Landry's before. It was all right, I'm just not that much of a seafood person.

This is outside of Branson but, have you guys ever ate at Lambert's Cafe in Ozark? That place is amazingly good.

Post by: haytater on May 28, 2008, 02:27:14 PM
^^ It's funny, my parents and I usually start talking about making the Silver Dollar City trip when we eat at Cracker Barrel (in Oklahoma) because the atmospheres are so similar. My family also always eats at OUTBACK in Branson. It's not the chain, Outback Steakhouse. It's much better than that.
Title: Re: Branson Food
Post by: sdcforever on May 29, 2008, 08:30:44 AM
^Holy Cow!  I completely forgot about the Outback!  That place is definitely a must!  Great food, with an Australian flair.  That was where I ate frog legs and alligator tail for the first time.

^^I've eaten at Lambert's three or four times.  Home of the throwed rolls!  ;D  It is amazingly good, and very filling.  They come around with all of the sides, so you're practically full before your food even arrives.  The only place I've eaten where they walk around with a vat of sorghum molasses.  It's a must as well.
Title: Re: Branson Food
Post by: Coaster on May 29, 2008, 12:55:21 PM
^Yeah I've felt the exact same way. I've only finished one of my meals there because I was so full from rolls, fried potatoes, and sorghum.

For those of you that haven't ate there before beware, there is ALWAYS a long wait. Especially on Sunday after the James River Assembly church service gets out.
Title: Re: Branson Food
Post by: adairmd on May 29, 2008, 01:05:56 PM
I went there on the 18th for the first time.  It sure won't be the last.  We got there early enought that we only had to wait around 5 minutes.  Yes, before James River gets out.  When we were leaving, there were people waiting outside, a lot of people.  It would have been worth the wait though.
Title: Re: Branson Food
Post by: Coaster on May 29, 2008, 01:28:43 PM
^We have gotten there before and there has been a 3 hour wait. We didn't wait. Three hours would've been way too long. If it is under an hour we usually walk over to the antique store and Osceola Cheese for something to do while we are waiting.

Where is the Outback at?

^Once you go back to Branson you should try Shorty Small's again.

Famous Dave's is very good, although we've never went to the one in Branson but it is a franchise. If your really hungry and you have like four people you can order this huge thing called the "All American BBQ Feast." It is HUGE and they serve it in a trash can lid. Believe me you won't go hungry. We had three guys and I don't think we got it all down.

Well, my family is very frugal, so we typically eat at Taco Bell while in Branson. But sometimes we'll plan for one nice dinner while there, and it's usually at Cracker Barrel or Outback.

My friends and I were going to eat at Golden Corral last year, but after walking in and seeing the prices, we walked right back out and went to Cracker Barrel.

f you are looking for BBQ in Branson than you really need to try this place.  It has great food.  It is next to Fall Creek Inn

Danna's BBQ & Burger Shop

I like Danna's (usually get the catfish platter and save the hot buttered roll for dessert), and have been to all of the afore mentioned places.  They're all good.

Have any of you been to the Devil's Pool Restaurant at Big Cedar Lodge?  Atmosphere out the wazzoo.  Look out over the lake.  And Big Cedar Resort is just gorgeous.  And the food is absolutely wonderful.  It's in the $15-$25 price range, a little higher than average for Branson (well, maybe about the same as Landry's), but it's definitely worth it at least once just for the experience.

The only place in the area that I've had better food is a little place called Gaskin's Cabin just out of the north end of Eureka Springs, AR.  I haven't eaten there in a very long time, so I don't even know if it's still there, but the wife and I had prime rib there that literally melts in your mouth.  Never had better, anywhere in the country.  The chef even came out and talked to us for awhile.  It turned out that he had been the chef at the White House (yes, that White House) for quite a number of years and decided to move to a place where the pace of life was a little slower, ending up in Eureka Springs.

Gaskins is still there, I remember eating there once a while back in high school with my parents as we lived not "too" far from Eureka Springs.  I can't speak for the food currently though as it might have changed hands.  Eureka Springs is another great place to visit though, good suggestion Zephon!

^^Gaskin's Cabin Steakhouse is great, and is still there like you said, betamike.  I also really enjoy eating at the Bavarian Inn Restaurant--great Czech-German food and fine German beer is served there! :)  Also a great place to eat in Eureka Springs is the Crystal Dining Room at the 1886 Crescent Hotel; of course the Crescent has an interesting history as well.  I love Eureka Springs.  When we'd go we'd stay the night a couple of times at the Bavarian Inn, which isn't bad.  But most of the time we'd stay in a cabin at the Tall Pines Inn, which is wonderful!

A few years ago, the chef at SDC (Was it chef Zader?) was becoming an icon of the park.  Is he still around?  Is there a new chef?  Will this person play an active part in the Culinary & Crafts building?
Title: Re: Branson Food
Post by: Zephon on July 12, 2008, 08:48:45 PM
He's been gone a few years.  They don't really have what they call the "head chef" anymore, at least not like it was with Zader.  I'm not sure what they're going to do at the C&C building.  They were looking for the type of person who could fill that kind of position for it, not sure if they've found one yet.

No one has mentioned the restaurant at the IMAX.  We have found that to be one of the best.   Shorty Smalls is one of the worst.  We have tried that place three different times.

Joe's Crab on the landing is cool.  What a great place to work that would be.

These are basically the only two restaurants I eat at in Branson because they're on the edge of town so they're much easier to get to. Plus, the food is fantastic at both places. Since I'm a local I don't have to spend the night in Branson, so generally don't have any reason to go down the strip and get tangled in all that traffic.

Breakfast at Billy Gails for us is second only to the Mill. It is hearty, wholesome, and cheap. From the outside it looks a bit rough, and well lets face it, from the inside it does too!!! but the food and service is wonderful. Pancakes that are bigger than the plates, biscuits and gravy, all of it is there!

We frequent the salad bar at Ruby Tuesday's only because then we won't feel too guilty afterwards when we gorge ourselves on Andy's. I managed a frozen custard store/branch in StL for a little over 6 years, and I can say for a fact that Andy's is my favorite. We NEVER miss it.  Other dinner locations are

We also hit up the Olive Garden during the winter for soup after we see the lights/parade. Other than that, Altenhoff Inn on Indian Point has great views, but average food/ service from my visits. We eat in at the cabins a lot during our stays to save $$. We shop at Jubilee, and the people know us since we are there so much.

My family loves the Grand Country Buffet.  It is pricey but the best day to go is for Sunday brunch. We also love the Hard Luck Dinner.  The food is pretty good but the atmosphere is great since all the wait staff sings.   Thinking about all this Branson food makes me hungry!! Maybe a trip down there is in my near future!

I second the Grand Country Buffet - that is the first place my girls want to eat at as soon as we check into the hotel.  They love the meatloaf and mashed potatoes.  Of course, they like the ice cream and cookies.  They prefer to sit near the picture that have the grandma and grandpa talk.

Also, I like the hawaiian pizza athte Imax and enjoy Andy's too.

Of course, before we leave to go home - it has been tradition to eat breakfast at IHOP.

I cannot wait until April!!!!

I have to say that I have been to Cracker Barrel so much that whenever I go to one here at home, when leaving, I feel like I am going to walk outside onto the strip, and I am let down that I am at home again! That would be a great "Twilight Zone" moment. A wormhole here in St Louis that immediately leads from A restaurant to Highway 76! I do love me some CB Chicken and Dumplings.

AVOID:
Applebee's.  They have the absolute worst service I've ever seen at a restaurant.  I cannot even begin to put into words how frustrating this place is.

Olive Garden.  Forget getting a table within an hour of arriving.  You might as well put your name on the list and then go watch a show and come back.  You might actually have a table by then - and even then the service sucks.

This isn't exactly "Branson", but we always look forward to eating at least once at Lambert's in Ozark either on the way in or the way home.  Love those "Throwed Rolls", with sorghum!  Their Fried Taters are the best, and I always older the hog jowl.  It's like deep fried bacon!  Decadent but awesome!

Did have a real bad experience a few years ago at Branson Red Lobster. It was a busy night. We had a large group. They forgot about us for over an hour and a half. When we got a table, service was lousy, orders messed up. They gave us a discount on the tab, but not a satisfactory one.

Regarding Lamberts...go to the ORIGINAL location at Sikeston, MO. (Just off I-55) I lived in Sikeston in my post SDC years while attending college at SEMO University just north of there at Cape Girardeau. My parents were frends with Norman Lambert, the owner, the original guy who started throwing rolls. He was a nice fellow, very funny. Always entertaining. The current building they work out of in Sikeston was built in the 80's, and is kind of set up like a Cracker Barrell, but with the Lambert's charm. Plenty of pictures of mules, and business cards hung up all over the place. If you leave there hungry, it's nobody's fault but yours. The restaurants at Ozark and in Alabama are run by Norm's kids, and they apparently do a very good job with the places they have, too.

The only thing about Lambert's Sikeston is, partically on weekends, be prepared to wait in line to get in.

That was normal, going back to the early '80's. part of the fun of going is mingling in line with the others waiting to eat, too.

Olive Garden on 76 works best if you go in, get it to go, and take it back to eat at your cabin, lodge motel etc. We did this in Dec. and it worked great. Only about 10 min wait, within 15 minutes from leaving we were on Indian Point eating in a warm cozy cabin!

I always try to take time to go to the Blue Bayou Inn and eat at Starvin Marvins.  It has a great buffet.  Try to go for breakfast and dinner at least once when I am in town.  Prices are reasonable and food is good.  I always wait until the buses have left because it's not the largest place in town so it gets full rather fast.  There seafood buffet has it all...its become a tradition for my family.

I've never had a bad experience at Cracker Barrel, but I really don't understand the attraction of eating "home cooking" in a restaurant. I grew up with "home cooking", and while I love it, I'd no more pay $15 for a restaurant version of a "home" meal, than I would order a bologna sandwich.

My wife can whip up chicken-fried steaks to beat anyone's (even my mother's), if that's what we happen to crave.

When we go out to eat, we try to find new and exotic (to us, at least) foods that we then try to duplicate at home.

One of the reasons I love Cracker Barrel is because it reminds me so much of Silver Dollar City, and Branson. I have three of them within a 20 mile radius of my house. However, that is also the reason I love to hate Cracker Barrel. Since I can eat there all the time at home, there is no need to make a special trip there while in Branson.

I am a good BBQ fan. I am tentative to try new places because I would rather have the same old thing that I know is good rather that spend good money on a half rack of ribs that isn't good at all.

BBQ debate time, I know this is a regional question but which do you prefer?
Ribs: Wet or Dry?

I ask because this will help my decision making on where to eat ribs next time!

I must say I really dont care to eat at the chains when on vacation.  The point of vacation is doing something you cant to at home.....including eating at the chain restaurants.  The food at most places in Branson seems average at best.  I must admit I do enjoy Starvin Marvins though.

Rube-That's been my life long debate!  My take on it is this....if the place has a good sauce, then I'll sauce it up.  I really like a dry rib if they have a good rub and smoke and prefer it that way personally.  But like I said, if they have a GOOD sauce, then I'll drench it.  Head Country is made here in Oklahoma and I'll almost put that stuff on Ice Cream!  It's simply that good.  If I hit a new BBQ joint, I'll ask them how they make their ribs and if they are proud of their "secret" home made rub, then it's dry no doubt, if they brag about their sauce, I'll try it on a cracker to make my own judgement.  Bottom line is...you can't go wrong with good BBQ!

Well  I do know this Shorty Smalls is some of the worst BBQ around.
We love to eat breakfast at McFarlands, Silver Dollar City, and some little place down town.

For dinner we always eat at the condo.   We have three chefs in our family and have been in the restaurant business since 1984.   We even pack our own smoker.  Their is nothing better than fresh slow smoked brisket, Tablerock lake, and a cold adult beverage.   Last summer we smoked a whole rib.  It was a little expensive but wow nothing beats smoked prime rib, twice baked potatoes, grilled corn on the cob, and fresh steamed asparagus.

PastorDon  we have a floating dock cafe on Beaver Lake in NW Arkansas that is very nice. Kids feed the ducks and fish, parents can get bait around the corner at the back side, and there are boat slips for those on the lake that just want to pull up and get a bite. Big picture windows so patrons can watch the action on the lake. Very nice, family ran place. Very relaxing. Cheap basic fare, like hamburger baskets, onion rings, fries, even a fish sandwich, icy cold Cokes. I hope the place you are asking about is the same way. :)

On my trip last week with family friends, we changed almost everything we normally do, and went through their routines. Doing this was frustrating at times, since When in Branson I like doing my usual things. However...This time was different. I loved trying the two new places to eat this week.

Staying at a new place, I thought I would try something I wouldn't have on a normal basis. At BigCedar Lodge, at the Buzzard Bar, I had the Clay Self burger. Named after the cowboy singer/ musician, by the same name, it is made up of a Grilled burger, basted with barbeque sauce, topped with coleslaw, smoked bacon and a breaded onion ring with a sesame seed bun. The signature Blueberry poppyseed dressing was pretty tasty as well on their salad.

Never having had the opportunity to have Famous Dave's BBQ, I was excited to be in Branson with carnivores this time!  I am a BBQ fan, but just never got the Daves. It was great. The Pork was some of the best I have had, The St Louis Style Ribe were as good as any here in St. Louis (I know it is just a cut of ribs, but it was better than any here) And the cornbread was the best I have ever had. This is a must stop on the Landing.

Big Cedar Lodge is a neat place. Has a long history as a resort. Used to be known as Devil's Pool. Indians thought the spring at Devil's Pool had mystical powers and healing powers. Pioneers saw the blind cave fish coming out of the spring and thought it was an entry to Hell. Pro Bass Shop has done a good job with the place...love all the log cabins and buildings. But ya gotta have some deep pockets...

Deep indeed. thankfully the friends of ours had "guest share-points" for their time share. They were able to give us a room for the week at no cost to them, or us. We are a one income family during these economic hardships, and well... I teach public school so, in this economy we would NEVER be able to afford a stay here if we had to pay. It was like being treated like royalty for a week. Cookies were delivered every night promptly at 7 to our room, newspapers were on the doorsteps daily, free mini golf, several pools, a lazy river, boats for rental, horseback riding, running/hiking trails, a trolley would pick you up and take you anywhere on the HUGE premises. I doubt we will be lucky enough to stay there again, so I took in as much as I could (as opposed to taking out as much as I could, I think they would have noticed the missing TV and microwave :D)
It is located 10 miles South of Branson on Table Rock Lake, in Ridgedale MO (an exit or two past Hollister/College of the Ozarks

Way back in the days of old...when dinosaurs roamed the earth...I had my 10th high school anniversary at Big Cedar in 1990. Wonderful meeting rooms, great food. This place is the only place I know of that has as good of  attention to detail as SDC. Even the handles on the doors and fixtures in the rest rooms were "in theme." as Ferris Bueller was known to say..."If you have the means, I highly recommend it."

I know this got off food...but Firstly Ferris Bueller is my hero (in the voice of Cameron Frye). It is one of my favorite movies-next to Back to The Future 1 & 3. The detail was crazy Junior. Cast antler drawer pulls, animal heads and mounted fish in every room. Lamps that cast shadows of wildlife and mountain scenes on the walls... A lot to take in in such a short stay
"Life moves pretty fast. If you dont stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

Now back to foooooooooooood!!!!!!!

^I love Back to the Future as well!!!! Back in the day, I used to watch it all the time. And Ferris Bueller is just a typical 80's movie to me, I really didn't see anything too special about it.

Anyways, back to food now!! I've probably posted this before, but the Famous Dave's at the Branson Landing is the best I've ever ate at. The food always arrives quickly, there is never a wait, and that allows you to get in and get out to enjoy your Branson vacation.

My vegetatian wife even enjoyed it (this was the reason that we had not gone there prior to this visit) She had the pulled pork salad-w/out the pork, and a cornbread muffin. She fell in love with the honey bbq salad dressing.

When shopping Panera Bread behind the Moon River theater is a great option for lunch.
I eat so much friend food while in Branson it helps me to feel like I am doing something a little healthier for 1 meal at least.
Great take out snacks for the evening at the hotel as well.

In its heyday, the Paradise Grille on Shep. Hills Expwy was THE place to eat.  I remember all the cool lighting and the food was very trendy.  Lots of show folk from the strip would frequent there.  I don't think it's much count now.

We used to go to Billy Gails for breakfast all the time. It is off of hwy 265 and has been voted best breakfast in the 417. It is in an old gas station/ log cabin, and offers the standards for breakfast at a good price. I usually get the pancakes (which are the largest pancakes I have seen). It gets crowded so arrive early!

Chester's moved to the strip center across from Branson Mall; it's in the space where Penny Gilley had her restaurant.  The menu is not as extensive as it was but still has a lot of the favorites.

^I noticed that they weren't serving breakfast anymore. I loved their breakfast, especially the pile-ups! I called them to find out what the deal was. The owner told me that the landlord at the old building, wanted the building back, to open his own restaurant. I asked about breakfast, and he told me, that they just didn't have a big enough flat top for it right now. He said that they would like to get a bigger flat top some day, and bring breakfast back!

When on the landing and suffering through the heat of the day the wife and I decided to stop in Old Chicago Pizza and Pasta for a quick look at the menu. We stumbled upon the 110 brews and started our World Beers Tour. Great place that provided a nice cool place to sit, and boy did the pizza smell good. We didn't actually try the food, just the drinks! Talk about a good meal.

I wish I could put a Harvey Water Clock outside the front door of what was Uncle Joe's BBQ and take you all back to 1978! Uncle Joe's was known far and wide as having some of the best BBQ in the region. Those smoky, beef ribs were something else. I think Success "did the place in" and the business was sold several times, with the quality of the food dropping with each sale of the business. I raved about the place, and then took my wife to it in the late 90's, and we both were disappointed. Last I saw, it was a Mexican food place. (It was located in a little strip mall just down from Baldknobbers headed to downtown) Used to have a few arts and crafts shops around it, as well as a miniature golf place(That was fun, too.)

I wish I could have tried some of Uncle Joe's BBQ. It's a shame it’s not still open today since I do enjoy some genuine Ozark BBQ. Don’t get my wrong though. Mexican food is great, but I don’t drive all the way to Branson for Mexican food.  :)

I read a lot about the cracker barrel and the atmosphere similarities between it and SDC. That's funny. I went to the one in Oklahoma City last week in anticipation of my upcoming trip to Branson this Friday. It was awesome. Especially the chicken and dumplings. Dang y'all, I'm starving now.

Cracker Barrel is definitely reminiscent of Silver Dollar City. Just that wooden smell that greets you as soon as you walk through the front doors of the restaurant takes me back every time. ;D

Of course Cracker Barrel has the country store up front. For me, walking through the country store is akin to walking through the Hospitality House before I enter the main area of Silver Dollar City.  :)

All of my favorites except Montana Mikes are at the Branson Landing

Cantina Laredo is the best food and SERVICE in Branson. Everything from the chips & salsas (both kinds), to your meal, to the amazing desserts (especially chocolate cake) is best in show. I don't even like Mexican food that much, but this place has turned me on to it.

Old Chicago Pizza is also amazing. The Italian Nachos are a meal in themselves, but I like the Meat Me pizza too. Kudos for serving Mountain Dew  :)

Orange Leaf is far and away the best frozen dessert around. Forget Andy's (I never thought I would say that). 12 kinds of frozen yogurt, 24 different toppings. You choose what you get and how much you spend, currently 45 cents per oz. (I usually get out of there for around $2.50, fully satisfied)

Montana Mikes (2 locations) I prefer the one on Hwy 248 near K-Mart, because it is closer to Springfield, and I don't have to deal with 76 or swinging back and forth between back roads to get to the one by the Titanic Museum. Great service and food. Again, Kudos for serving Mountain Dew. I know that Coke products are cheaper for restaurants, but I like to be able to get my "fix" when I am out and about.

If you want authentic Mexican food, Little Hacienda and Case Fuentes are both the best AUTHENTIC Mexican food around.  And, a LOT cheaper than Cantina Laredo.  And, IMO, the salsa is better at both of those places as well.  But, I still love CL. The service and the view are unbeatable.

Cantina Laredo is a bit pricey for me, I am used to the prices from our local Mexican restaurants that are usually 1/2 the price of Cantina Lared0-My local Mexican is not in Branson, and does not have the smae real estate/ view...it is in an old Pizza Hut!

I agree that Cantina Laredo is great food and by far the best service in Branson. We eat there at least once a month and have never had anything but great service. In a town with a lot of good food but lots of poor service, its the Gold Standard.

Joe's Crab shack is on the other end of the scale for me. 4 visits 4 very bad experiences!

Yes, if you got bad service at Cantina Laredo, it would be a very rare occurrence.

To me, bad service there would be having an empty drink for 10 seconds. That has never happened, and I've been there like 25 times in 3 years.

Which Little Hacienda do you go to?  The one in Hollister has OK service, but I wouldn't call it great.  But, it has a "local" feel to it, and the 10% local discount doesn't hurt either! ;)  You certainly won't ever see that at Cantina Laredo!  ::)

Missouri couple sentenced for tax fraud KMOV.com

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- A southwest Missouri couple has been sentenced for defrauding the government by paying some of their employees in cash.

The U.S. Attorney says 74-year-old Carl Davis of Branson was sentenced Monday to two years in federal prison without parole and ordered to pay $189,892 in restitution. His wife, Jo Davis, was sentenced to five years probation and ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution.

Carl Davis admitted in March that he paid some employees at the Farmhouse Restaurant in Branson in cash to reduce the amount of taxes he paid. He also admitted filing false personal tax returns for 2000-2004.

Jo Davis admitted that she filed a false personal tax returns in 2004 and 2005.

Carl Davis' son, 48-year-old Jeffery Davis, was sentenced in October 2009 to one year and one day in prison and ordered to pay $62,508 in restitution for his part in the restaurant scheme.

The real shame is, the restaurant has made huge money over the last 30 years, and there is no need to defraud the government of the taxes that are owed. These folks could have still made a very fine living paying taxes and putting employees on the books properly. No need to pull crap like that, ever.

That is such a shame! This 74 year old man must now be locked up in prison over foolish decisions. Plus with the hundreds of thousands of dollars in restitution, he will be dealing with the repercussions of this mess for the rest of his life. It just doesn’t seem worth it to me. In retrospect, he should have just bit the bullet, and paid his taxes just like we all must do.

Tax prosecutions almost always lose money. The tax debt is almost always much smaller than the cost of investigating, prosecuting, and incarcerating someone, not to mention that person is then out of business and won't be producing any more taxes for the foreseeable future.

The real reason is, as Voltaire said, pour encourager les autres.

One would think that they would WANT him to keep the business open and force him the then turn over $$ as it is earned...I guess that is too logical that he owes gobs of money, now they put him in a jail, and cost the state ...more $$, needless to say he is gonna cost them more by keeping him in jail. At least he would be making them money if he was working. I'll move on down and work the restaurant. I have 5 years on restaurant management.
Title: Re: Branson Food

Well this is the government after all. It's one of those situations where they throw him in jail first, and then expect him to pay it all when he gets out because that's how it's always been done. If they really wanted the tax money, they should have sentenced him to go back to work, and pay it off.
