Title: A Detailed Discussion: Food/Drinks
Post by: Joy on September 01, 2010, 06:16:35 PM
Welcome to the fourth week of "A Detailed Discussion"!

Since I'm late getting this up (school is in session now, so suddenly busy busy busy), and next Monday is Labor Day, I'm going to make this the thread for this week AND next week and keep it going until a week from this coming Monday.

The current Discussion will be stickied as well as the previous, so there will always be two threads of this project at the top of the thread for people to have easy access.

INFO ON A DETAILED DISCUSSION THREADS

I thought I might try something new on here. Once a week, I'll post a new thread where we can have detailed discussion of a specific aspect of SDC where we can give compliments, air concerns, and do comparisons to SDC's sister park Dollywood. Once all the topics on my list have been exhausted, I will be going through all the threads and putting together a "Fandom Entreaty" including direct quotes and the like (as long as you give permission). Once put together, I'll post the Entreaty to the forum for everyone to read and give ideas for changes, omissions, additions, etc. Once we have a final draft, I will be sending it to SDC.

TOPIC 4: FOOD/DRINKS

For the fourth "A Detailed Discussion," I am using the topic of food and drinks as requested by Duelist. This is something that is one of those non-Fest topics that will keep us busy in between Fest-related topics.

To give a bit of a format to these Detailed Discussion threads, here's a list of questions to get things started:

What is your favorite sit-down restaurant? Least favorite?

What is your favorite concession-type food place? Least favorite?

What is your favorite drink cart/etc? Least favorite?

What is your favorite shop/stand for food (Candy Factory, Sullivan's Mill, Apple Butter, Jerky, Honey, etc)? Least favorite?

What are your favorite festival foods and drinks? Least favorite?

What food/drink related places/items would you omit if you were in charge?

What food/drink related places/items would you add if you were in charge?

Would you be interested in being quoted in a "Fandom Entreaty" to be compiled and sent to SDC (this "Fandom Entreaty," when finished, would first be posted in full to SDCFans)?

So.... let the Detailed Discussion begin!

Joy

What is your favorite sit-down restaurant?  Gah!!!!!  So hard...I never miss an opportunity to eat at Jack's Sandwich Shop.   Because of the heritage and because that is probably the best dang muffaletta sandwich I have ever had.

Least favorite?  By default, all SDC food locations are good, but if I had to pick.....Wagonworks Grill

What is your favorite concession-type food place?   I'm going to say the Lumbercamp and here's why....I only go there for the fried pickles.  So they serve me as a concession place more than a sit down location.

Least favorite?  The snack location at Grand Expo.  Nothing against them...just generic is all.

What is your favorite drink cart/etc?   I'm pretty easy as long they fill my mug with Mr. Pibb!

Least favorite?  The furthest one away from where I am at that particular time.

What is your favorite shop/stand for food (Candy Factory, Sullivan's Mill, Apple Butter, Jerky, Honey, etc)?   Candy Factory!!!

Least favorite?  Not a jerky fan much at all.  Not that I hate it, just never see it as a delicious snack along my travels at SDC

What are your favorite festival foods and drinks?  I don't get to go to many of the festivals any more....but if I can mention that the Candy Factory does special demonstrations during the holidays, does that count?

Least favorite?  Not a fan of wassail at ALL.

What food/drink related places/items would you omit if you were in charge?  I just can't get behind the Dip n' Dots fascination.  Serve the real thing, I say!

What food/drink related places/items would you add if you were in charge?  Okay, this isn't so much of an add, but on trips past they used to have the best teas served at the little window outside the Culinary School.  It has been closed on my recent trips.

What is your favorite sit-down restaurant? The Mill, Hey I noticed thay have actually reduced the buffet price to $9.99, that will bring me back to this best value.  Least favorite? Aunt Polly's, chicken was so dry and spare the one time we ate there.

What is your favorite concession-type food place? The one with the fried pork fritter sandwich. Least favorite? Dippin Dots or any other branded product.

What is your favorite drink cart/etc? Frozen lemonade. Least favorite?  Don't know of one.

What is your favorite shop/stand for food (Candy Factory, Sullivan's Mill, Apple Butter, Jerky, Honey, etc)?  Eva's and Delilah's Least favorite? Jerky

What is your favorite sit-down restaurant? This is a tough one because I generally spend more time adventuring than I do sitting down to eat. However, I always seem to make a stop at the Riverside Ribhouse.

Least favorite? Hard to say because I generally do not spend a lot of time at the restaurants. However, Aunt Polly’s Fried Chicken sounds the least appetizing to me while at the park.

What is your favorite concession-type food place? Lumbercamp Falls Skillet. I just love to hear that pan sizzle!

Least favorite? I don’t have one specifically, however I tend to lean away from anything plain, and generic.

What is your favorite drink cart/etc? Any stand with cream soda!

Least favorite? There just aren’t enough notable ones to come up with a least favorite.

What is your favorite shop/stand for food (Candy Factory, Sullivan's Mill, Apple Butter, Jerky, Honey, etc)? Brown’s Candy Factory! Or, wait what about Phoebe Snapp Taffy! I just can’t decide. ;D

Least favorite? Honey Heaven. I love honey, but I could easily pass by this shop without buying anything.

What are your favorite festival foods and drinks? Not too picky so long as I have my pumpkin pie in the fall, and some hot chocolate, and spice in the winter.

Least favorite? The food at World's Fest can sometimes be a hit, or miss.

What food/drink related places/items would you omit if you were in charge? Anything, and everything that falls into the category of generic “Six Flags” style food.

What food/drink related places/items would you add if you were in charge? I wouldn’t add anything in particular. I would just tweak the menu to make sure that all of the food choices feature the best Ozark southern cooking possible. Don’t forget the funnel cakes! :D

Would you be interested in being quoted in a "Fandom Entreaty" to be compiled and sent to SDC (this "Fandom Entreaty," when finished, would first be posted in full to SDCFans)? Absolutely.

What is your favorite sit-down restaurant? Mollie's Mill. This and the Mine are the only sit-down restaurants I've been to in SDC. We have recently stopped eating here because it is too pricey for four people. A fun experience though!
 Least favorite? n/a

What is your favorite concession-type food place? Fried Pickles at Lumbercamp. Least favorite? n/a

What is your favorite drink cart/etc? Does drink barrel count? An ice cold root beer. Least favorite?  n/a

What is your favorite shop/stand for food (Candy Factory, Sullivan's Mill, Apple Butter, Jerky, Honey, etc)? Apple turnover from the Apple Butter Shop, Peppered Jerky from the Jerky stand, Cinnamon Bread from Sullivan's and, of course, pork rinds! Family Feud succotash is my favorite. Least favorite? The funnel cakes because I get sick at the smell of the fried batter.

What are your favorite festival foods and drinks? Wassail! Least favorite?  n/a

What food/drink related places/items would you omit if you were in charge? Dippin' Dots

What food/drink related places/items would you add if you were in charge? n/a

Would you be interested in being quoted in a "Fandom Entreaty" to be compiled and sent to SDC (this "Fandom Entreaty," when finished, would first be posted in full to SDCFans)? sure thing although i didn't provide the most quotable answers.

I don't have enough recent experience to comment on the restaurants, but from my 2009 trip, I have to say the Main Street lemonade cart vendor was top notch.

He was an older gentleman, 60-75, white hair and mustache, and he totally sold his product as the "best lemonade you'll ever taste". We actually agreed that it was among the best ever.

It was hucksterism, but he was polite and low key and enjoyable to listen to. He wasn't selling snake oil to the crowd, and he wasn't a sideshow barker; he was directly engaging us one-on-one after we approached his cart for some lemonade. We wanted a cold drink, and intended to buy one when we walked up, but his beautiful banter as he prepared the drinks kept us engaged. He didn't just hand us a drink and take our cash, he kept us entertained as he slowly and carefully squeezed the lemons and measured the sugar and shook the cups.

From the first approach until he handed us our drinks, he gently drew us back to a more relaxed age, and artfully controlled the tempo of the entire exchange.

I have no idea what his name is, but he was one of the few who reminded me of the Citizens of the 1970's, so far as his demeanor and eagerness to engage visitors in dialogue, while drawing them back to 1880. On our next trip, I hope he's still on Main Street selling lemonade.

What is your favorite drink cart/etc? Frozen Lemonade  Least favorite? The sour slush- like new "frozen" lemonade

What is your favorite shop/stand for food (Candy Factory, Sullivan's Mill, Apple Butter, Jerky, Honey, etc)? Eva and Delilah's bakery Least favorite? n/a

What are your favorite festival foods and drinks? The House of BBQ and Wassail/Hot Choclate at Christmas Least favorite? n/a

What food/drink related places/items would you omit if you were in charge? Dippin dots

What food/drink related places/items would you add if you were in charge?  Mary's Pie Shop they way it used to be with lots of variety; Homemade Root Beer; somewhere to get a good steak!

I still think it would be a great idea to have an exclusive, upscale restaurant or club on the park for the hardcore fan/season pass holder. You know, tucked away in a quiet, green, leafy place...we've all talked about it before on other threads. That would be a great place to have a nice steak! You'd have to make a reservation for a meal as you enter the park for the day. Only so many could be served in a day. Similar to the upscale dining at Disneyland or Magic Kingdom that's occasionally been reported on in the media.

I am glad you mentioned that Junior...I always am thinking about the exclusive area or upscale dining at SDC. I think it is a niche that needs to be filled by HFEC before they lose those guests to the Chateau or Candlestick Inn, or some other place in Branson.

Back in 1998, I think, the SDC Gazette talked of having a "Sunset Supper" or something like that in which you could pay an extra $18 in advance and after the park closed you'd be treated to a steak dinner with all the fixin's served at the outdoor tables at the Lumbercamp Restraunt.  Old West characters would be strolling around and visiting each table.  Then, after your meal, you'd go into the SDC Saloon for a show with the Sons of the Pioneers.  That sounded like heaven to me!  I asked a citizen up there how that all went and they said it got cancelled because one of the Pioneers got ill and they had to cancel their shows and called the whole thing off.  Still, I'd like to see something like that at the City...

Yah, that would be a bit more quaint than then the large echo hollow shows, and it would provide an activity for guests after hours, and it would also provide another source of income for the park. Dinner and a show...I would take them up on it.

That would be  a great idea. Not sure if any of you have done it it or not but the lantern tour they do for the cave for a smaller group of people is well worth the money you have to pay for it. I have gone on the regular tour since then and the lantern tour is so much better.

Did you know that Echo Hollow was originally built as a dinner theater in '83? For a long time, there was an understanding among Branson businesses that SDC could have the daytime activity, while the shows in town had the night time crowd. Then, early '80's rolled around and some of the theaters started having afternoon shows. SDC reacted by putting in the dinner theater at Echo Hollow. Dinner theater idea only lasted about a season or two, but that was kind of the end of the old gentleman's agreements from the 60's and 70's that was in place.

Tell us more Junior. What kind of show was it?  What kind of menu did it feature?  Where did the people sit to eat?  I guess it did not go over well since it only lasted a year or so?

FROM THE 1983 SDC ENTERTAINMENT BROCHURE (Passed out with the Pathfinders once you arrived on park):
"Evenings! Are really special at Silver Dollar City! A guide to Special Activities Beginning at 3pm"

"BRAND NEW Echo Hollow Dinner & Show in a beautiful wooded setting."

"Silver Dollar City is proud to present Echo Hollow, a spectacular Ozark showplace that
delightfully brings hearty dining and festive entertainment together in a beautifully wooded
setting. Dine from a country menu choice smoked beef, buttery corn-on-the-cob, baked beans,
biscuits, and fruit cobbler. You can relax and savor our family recipies, because everything is
served at your table! With dinner complete, sit back and enjoy a cast of over 30 characters
and musicians telling a fascinating story depicting many of the true to life experiences of the
mid-1880's. A non-stop celebration of songs, dancing, laughter and tears are all woven into
an evening you won't soon forget! The admission to Echo Hollow is $7.95 for adults (ages 11
and up.) with a Silver Dollar City passport, and $3.95 for children (ages 5-11.) Tickets are
available at Echo Hollow or Silver Dollar City's front gate. Dinner begins at 6:00 sharp, so
arrive early to insure the best seating! Don't miss this spectacular dinner and show nestled in
         a beautiful Ozark hollow!"

I'm sorry I cannot tell you about the show from a personal perspective. If I remember correctly, employees at the time had to pay for it, too. (I think we got some kind of discount, but it wasn't much.)You could get a meal at the Branson McDonald's back then for under $3.00...and admission to the park about this time was around $9.75. So the $7.95 price was too much for me at the time. From what I was told, the show was pretty good. This was the first dinner theater experience SDC put together. Down the road it would develop into a string of very successful DIXIE STAMPEDE Dinner Theaters! At the time, I was baffled as to how they could carve a theater out of a deep hollow, and wondered what Miss Mary would have thought about all those trees they cut down!

People sat in the top area of Echo Hollow to eat, then moved down into the theater to be seated for the show. The food service was so-so. SDC never had cooked food in one location and carried out into an open dining area like Echo Hollow before, so that first year was an experiment for that, too. I'm told that the food was OK, but maybe not served as hot as it could have been. People also were upset about the extra price on top of their admission to the park. Attendance was so-so. The show was replaced and the dinner dropped completely for the 1984 season, which was the first year of the popular, long running, and FREE "Silver Dollar Jubilee" with Rodney Dillard and Jack McDowell as comedian Mercy Purvis. I think the SDC Jubilee show ran through 1991. Sorry for the three part answer, but I hope I've gone into enough detail for you...it took me a while to root through my files to find all the info and the photos I posted on Flickr.

Junior, your account of the "gentleman's agreement" is what I've always understood to be behind the early closing hour of the park. Branson visitors were "supposed to" spend the day at SDC, and the evening at SOTH or the music shows.

Well, it's no longer a 9-5 world. People want what they want, 24/7.

Aw, shucks! :)That period of '78-84 was my time on park. I kept everything my employers gave me, costume reciepts, employee guidelines, brochures, maps, so I can tell you a lot about that slice of time. It was a great place to work, and I have always enjoyed visiting as both citizen and guest. The place has a lot of magic for me.

That sounds neat but I would be very disappointed if the shows in Echo Hollow after park closing was cancelled for this...My family has enjoyed the GAC and would hate to see it cancelled. Plus, I like the fact that the Echo Hollow show is included in the price of the ticket...I would not be apt to spend extra dollars for the additional show when I have a family of six...

FOUND IT!!!!  From 1984 I believe. When opened, it seated 2,000 but was later expanded to 4,000 after the tables etc. were removed. Here is a view from the walkway at the entrance to Echo Hollow. Notice the many tables that now...are not there.

Good pic Rube. I do remember some of the Echo Hollow shows were well attended in '83, but many were not. They have done a good job of utilizing the facility over the years...it served well in it's capacity as a venue for the 50th anniversary stuff.

When you walk out of the Barn Swing-Wilson Farm area toward River Blast. The homemade ice cream stand is right in the middle of the street.  I guess they don't want anyone to miss it because you can walk on either side of it.

there used to be a restaurant that had a waterfall that was really close to grandfather's mansion. In 1995 when my sister was 12, she got really sick and threw up on me. I'm talking poltergeist, spinning head, projectile etc (sorry about the image) therefore qualifying that restaurant as my least favorite. Does anyone remember the name of that place, I want to say Aunt Polly's chicken or the waterfall restaurant. Which one is right?

On the Plus side, SDC was the first place I had frozen lemonade. We had a huge etched glass mug that had our last name engraved on it on one side and the SDC logo on the other side. Will they still refill those? If so, can someone tell me how much it costs?

The restaurant you are thinking about was probably then known as the Springhouse, or it could be another one around the corner from the mansion called then Jack & Mary's. If they served big muffeletta sandwiches and pie, it was Jack and Mary's. If they served hot foods including some pretty good spaghetti, it was the Springhouse.

By the way, the frozen lemonaide is still there. It seems like it might be three to five bucks for a cup. They have a frozen lemonaide stand next to the railroad tracks behind the flooded mine.

come to think of it, if you are referring to the restaurant by the big, big waterfall...that's the lumbercamp, and they served hamburgers and cheeseburgers during that period of time. Pretty good ones, too.

Pretty sure it was springhouse. IT used to have a waterfall that may have been part of the one by grandfather's mansion. I remember when I was about 14 I was arguing with my dad, and he told me to come over there to look at something by the waterfall and he shoved my head under it.

I would definitely purchase a ticket for an "after closing" dinner with or w/o the entertainment.  I remember when The Mine Restaurant served a bar-be-que dinner family style that started with a huge pickle and wedge of cheese and ended with a dessert cart.  A steak dinner or something like the Mine used to offer would be a great experience - worth paying for!

Dinner and a show idea was tried out in 1983 in Echo Hollow...it bombed.

It seems like I recall seeing a photograph of the old dinner theater at Echo Hollow on one of the recent threads, oh wait, it was this thread on page two! ;D

Dinner theaters are a great concept, but Silver Dollar City would really have to “hit a home run” to compete with the evening shows on the strip.
Title: What food would you add at SDC?
Post by: Duelist on June 22, 2011, 05:52:38 PM
If you could add something new to the menu at SDC what would it be?  I'd love to see them offer a steak dinner.  There used to be one at the restraunt that is now the Wagon Works Grill.  I remember my wife and I sitting down to a steak dinner there with a baked potato and side salad.  I wish they'd bring that back.  Anything else needed to be added to SDC's menus?

They have a couple of Italian eateries don't they? We had pizza (buffet) in Molly's Mill or right next door IIRC. There's also one down by the RR that has spaghetti, but not sure what else, haven't been in there yet.

I should add here that I re-opened this thread since we had so many new members since it  was last posted to and to get opinions from others who didn't get to post the first time.  Many thanks to Tinaalsgirl for starting it in the first place!

What is your favorite sit-down restaurant?  Best sit down experience we've had is the place where they had the BBQ all-you-can-eat at this year's BG&BBQ.  Great food, Great service.

Least favorite?  Years ago, had a lackluster supper at the mill, but I don't want to hold that againt them now.  It was too cafeteria-style (i.e. junior high lunchroom).

What is your favorite concession-type food place?  Wagonworks.  It would be one of the skillets IF I didn't have to have sweet potatoes.

Least favorite?  Had some really poor fried chicken at Aunt Polly's during 2010 OTC.  May have been because it was late in the day.  I LOVE fried chicken, and I think that's a shame.  If the chicken were consistently good there, it would be my favorite.

What is your favorite drink cart/etc?  Fresh lemonade.  I can echo the previous poster who lauded the gentleman who mixes it.

Least favorite?  Nuts.  I'm no fan of Dippin' Dots, either, but I guess they serve a function.

What is your favorite shop/stand for food (Candy Factory, Sullivan's Mill, Apple Butter, Jerky, Honey, etc)?   Funnel Cakes.  My boys love the sliced potato things, and I have to admit to thinking them pretty good.

Least favorite? N/A

What are your favorite festival foods and drinks?  BBQ!!!!!  Followed by some of the WF foods.

Least favorite?  Some of the other WF foods.

What food/drink related places/items would you omit if you were in charge?  Probably the branded stuff (just because *I* don't like nuts doesn't mean I should ban them) because they break theme.

What food/drink related places/items would you add if you were in charge?  The steak dinner/theater combo sounds good.  Just because the operation was tried 25 years ago doesn't mean it's not a good idea now (given the changing habits of the guests).

Would you be interested in being quoted in a "Fandom Entreaty" to be compiled and sent to SDC (this "Fandom Entreaty," when finished, would first be posted in full to SDCFans)?  Why not?

Further thoughts:  can we do soemthing to reduce the plastic contianers that some of the shps (like th eSanwich shop) serve in?  They really make the service and the food look cheap.  I'm not demanding china, but even junior high lunchrooms had some kind of plates.

pretty good preview on everything palallin, i agree with your statement oabout plastic ware.  BUT the cost to maintain dishes, broken, and keep them clean would be UNREAL!!

I would like to see small batch root beer or sarsaparilla...Again. They had it back in the 80's.

Having worked in the food industry, I understand the health issues, and codes that are needed for the sale of food, especially if it is not made on site, and it was in fact an outside source that made it and sold it during the fall festival...But it was good!

Thanks!  I understand the costs, and I don't even really mind the plastic silverware.  What I mostly object to are the clear plastic boxes the sandwiches sit in in some shops.  They don't help preserve but they do make the place look like an old automat.  If not china, then how about chinette?  ;-)

Keep the ideas comin'!

Figured I'd give it a go...

What is your favorite sit-down restaurant? Least favorite?
Actually haven't eaten at any of the SDC sit down places, only the counter service type. Keep wanting to try breakfast at Molly Mill's though...

What is your favorite concession-type food place? Least favorite?
Buckshot Anne's. The Harvest Skillet and the Succotash. Love them. Least favorite... hmm, not sure I've had a bad concession meal yet. Granted I avoid the ones that don't appeal to me... never really interested in the corn dogs or the italian food when I'm there.

What is your favorite drink cart/etc? Least favorite?
Favorite is the Frozen Arctic Lemonade cart, the Arctic Strawberry to be specific. Not any of this flavored minute made lemonade or the regular frozen lemonade, the Arctic Strawberry is what hits the spot. Only one cart that I know off... I always search it out. Least favorite - Icee machines. I can get that at 7-11 around the corner for half the price.

What is your favorite shop/stand for food (Candy Factory, Sullivan's Mill, Apple Butter, Jerky, Honey, etc)? Least favorite?
Candy Factory and Apple Butter store! Gotta love free samples! :-)

What are your favorite festival foods and drinks? Least favorite?
So far, the Apple Pie from the BBQ festival. Amazing. Least favorite - Italian nachos at WF. They are a cold cruel joke. :-)

What food/drink related places/items would you omit if you were in charge?
Icee machines. Come on, really?

What food/drink related places/items would you add if you were in charge?
Add arctic strawberry, to ALL the frozen lemonade stands. Also I'd probably add some bakery stands around the park.

Would you be interested in being quoted in a "Fandom Entreaty" to be compiled and sent to SDC (this "Fandom Entreaty," when finished, would first be posted in full to SDCFans)? Sure, why not. If you still plan to do it.

In short - I love SDC food. My wife and I love going there just to eat. I guess we ride the rides and do other things to. But whenever we plan a trip we get all excited about skillet meals and the bakery goods!

I did try to steer my grandson to restaurants for some good grub on our trip today (June 24, 2011) but all he was interested in was the snack/junk type stuff...dippin' dots twice today...frozen lemonaide, funnel cake, giant jawbreaker on a stick, cotton candy during the train ride. Giant chocolate chip cookie. No complaints from him. I sampled about all of it, and it was fine. Although I AM ready now for some solid food...thank goodness my wife was busy in the kitchen when we got home! LOL!

My father-in-law also loves the arctic strawberry...We found it in 2 spots. One by the river blast and one down by the echo hollow area.

I'll just answer a few questions...

What is your favorite sit-down restaurant? Least favorite?  Love the Mill restaurant breakfast buffet!  The last several visits I've always eaten lunch at the Ribhouse, but that was mainly to watch everyone ride the Lost River -- some people are so funny on that ride!  Unfortunately, since moving to Kansas City, the BBQ at the Ribhouse is not as good as I can get here at home....

What is your favorite drink cart/etc? Least favorite?  Favorite is the strawberries and ice cream!

What is your favorite shop/stand for food (Candy Factory, Sullivan's Mill, Apple Butter, Jerky, Honey, etc)? Least favorite?  It's been quite a while since I've bought any food at the shops, but I'm planning on buying some candy this year.  I can no longer eat chocolate, so I'm looking forward to trying some of the salt water taffy or nut brittles or something like that!

Would you be interested in being quoted in a "Fandom Entreaty" to be compiled and sent to SDC (this "Fandom Entreaty," when finished, would first be posted in full to SDCFans)?  I suppose, although I'm not sure if I said much worth quoting ;)

I'd also like to add that I love the fact that all of the restaurant menus are online.  I'm on a restricted diet now and there's several foods that I can no longer eat, so I love being able to plan out my meals in advance!  I think we might try Aunt Polly's this year, it looks like they have a good variety of foods I can actually eat!  Fortunately I think I can still find enough I can eat at the breakfast buffet :)
