Title: 50th Logo
Post by: themeparkguy on July 09, 2009, 02:58:21 PM
The 50th Anniversary logo can be seen on the SDC website under schedules and brochures with the online version of the times mailer. What do you think of it?

It's OK. I would have made it more rustic, rather than trying to emulate Disney, but it works. Now if we just knew some more details about any possible festivities.

I agree.  It would be better if it didn't look like a Disney logo.  Apparently more details are forthcoming on their website.  It'll be interesting to see what they have planned.

The "pixie dust" does scream Disney doesn't it?  That was the first thing I thought of when I saw it.  It does look nice though.

I didn't like the font of the 50; I think that is what makes it Disneyesque - not so much the sparkles.

I was thinking what you're calling pixie dust actually gave the ax some motion.  I can envision a lumberjack throwing a CGI ax.  The ax swings and swoops through the park and lands in the log.

And all SDC Fans receive a solid gold axe stuck into a sterling silver dollar as a souvenir!

It works. I'm excited to see what they have in store!

The instant I saw it, "When you wish upon a star..."  started going through my head.  I guess if it works, for them.  I'm anxious to see what they come up with to celebrate, such as bigger headliners, bring back some characters, such as Noel doing a guest appearance as Rube, silver dollar tokens, and maybe even a "hall of history"!

You want a hall of history? Come on over I'll give you the tour! I have much more than you would think! I am like a good card player I haven't even begun to show my hand yet! (no I secretly do not have Terry Sanders in the basement or anything CREEPY like that!)

WOW.  I hadn't seen that yet.  It is sad isn't it.  Nothing about it says Silver Dollar City, except the obvious.  It really points out the fact that our "corporate," based in Atlanta, is really out of touch with what makes SDC, well, SDC.  And that of course is reflected in the disturbing trends that some of you have mentioned in other threads.  Lack of street entertainers, a "Culinary Arts School" (what's with that?), production shows instead of the down-home comedy, fewer crafts demos, etc, etc.  It's really sad.

I am choosing to go the optimistic route and hope that the Disney-ish logo indicates perhaps they will go all out for their 50th like Disney did for theirs. You never know. I mean, we have several former & current Citizens on the forum, and we're the only SDC fansite around, so it wouldn't surprise me if they read this board.

So who knows. Maybe they'll borrow some of our ideas, which I would LOVE. There are some amazing ideas on the 50th Anniv thread.

So, yeah. I choose to remain optimistic.

My ideas for the 50th:

-Strip the various *fest stuff. Make every day an SDC-fest, free of Nickelodeon characters or anything else that isn't in theme.
-Play up the nostalgia. Don't be afraid of that; there is plenty for kids and teens to love about a "pure" SDC. Advertise it!
-Characters and Citizens: more of them! Bring back the improv shows. Have more casual bands performing.

But, y'all already know I'm a nostalgia visitor. I was saddened that we only saw one Citizen who wasn't part of a specific ride or display. (He was a tall hillbilly, at least 6'8", wandering around the square. We were just passing through, so we didn't see him interacting with guests.)

I'm with ya on all those. And here's another: fly hot air balloons in the Cathedral Room of Marvel Cave.

I was telling my friend about how I'd missed seeing that by one day the last time they did it, and I thought "Oh hey, they should do that for the 50th celebration!"

Our tram announcer on the last visit mentioned the 50th and invited anyone with ideas to let them know.  I'll assume the ideas here will be suggested by the insiders here...

I did not mind the logo- it surprised me a little- especially that there giving it a test run. . .not sure why they're releasing it early.

I really like most of what happens at SDC.  Sure, I only have memories of the parks since the 80s, but I would hate for HFE to take away big production shows if it meant not seeing Dickens at Christmastime.  I like both the christmas festival and the fall festival a lot!  If HFE does read these boards, I guess I want them to know that I do like these things that some people seem to not like.  I like Worldfest.  I agree that Kid's Fest seems a little long, and the shows during Kid's Fest aren't my favorite shows, but I get a little nervous when people want to scrap festivals and big production shows.  My husband and I were just talking about why we come to SDC several times a year.  It's because they have a little bit of everything!  We love the thrill rides, shows, craft demos, shops, cave, and the whole experience of just walking through SDC.

I can't wait to see what the celebration holds.  I know we'll be there several times next year to see what happens. (The offer of the free Christmas ornament is too much for us to resist  :) .)

The online times letter promises that the celebration is all about the patrons- wonder what that will include?

from what i heard the balloons created quite a problem the last time they were brought in in 1994 so probably not going to happen. though i would love to have seen it

I could see Doc in the basement right now...No literally I am looking in the window, and I can see him...I think he's giving a tour Steam!!! Lets listen in... ;D

"And here we have the shoe room, ..not because it is shaped like a shoe, but because it is filled with shoes, and at this point we are directly beneath the kitchen...and over here we have a very unique hot water heater formation being fed by those fragile copper colored stalagmites"

There isn't anyone on the tour, but I think I just overheard him say something about seeing the basement in total darkness before they take the 14 step return trip to the surface. :D

Agreed. It should be all year long!

Sure, have something extra-special that weekend, but make all of 2010 the year to celebrate.

They need a "Hall of History" somewhere at the city, at least for the 50th year.  I'm thinking Shad's cabin, that they foolishly turned into a nursing station, would be the ideal piece of history to showcase the event!

This is sad, but I think I may skip school April 30th so I can be there for both days of the celebration.

And I'm sure they have more planned than just those two days, but May 1 is the actual 50th anniversary, so I can see why they have a specific planned celebration for those two days. I'm sure things will be happening all year there to celebrate...

At least I hope so.

I don't know if anyone's pointed this out, but SDC has a page for their 50th birthday party.  It has a schedule of events for April 30-May 2nd and mentions that the 50th anniversary is a yearlong celebration that begins that weekend.  Among the events are a couple of concerts by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils!

Springfield Business Journal has an article on the 50th celebration announcement from three weeks ago.  The park noted the plans for the celebration; among them are $50,000 in prize giveaways throughout the season and the opening of Tom and Huck's RiverBlast.  The most interesting thing in the whole article is one picture:  it depicts the layout for RiverBlast, which I believe we've never seen before.  Here's a link to the article:  http://sbj.net/main.asp?SectionID=18&SubSectionID=23&ArticleID=85758 (http://sbj.net/main.asp?SectionID=18&SubSectionID=23&ArticleID=85758)

Here's the photo for those of you who don't want to bother clicking away.  I can't get it any larger.  Perhaps those of you with more technical know-how can enlarge it. :)

No way to blow up the SBJ pic without greatly distorting the image and making it mostly illegible.

Hey all! I don't mean to bump, but as a designer with opinions different than the end users, I want to give my 3-point review on the logo:

1. Typography
I did notice that the typography in the logo has changed ever so slightly; from one serif to another serif. The new typeface's weight is slightly lowered, which is good; the original typography was a bit too bold in the first place. The new typeface is more Times-esque, which is much better than Cooper. The "50" typeface looks great to me as a designer and an end-user. Typography rating: 4/5

2. General design
The overall design seems fine. I do see that the axe appears slightly different. The only bone I have to pick with this is that the logo has an almost Web 2.0-like shine, which is dated and overused. That can take away major points for a brand. I think the pixie dust is okay; I believe the application will make up for it. General design rating: 3/5

3. Overview
As I said earlier, the general design is okay to me. I don't mind the pixie dust or the "50" typeface. The only thing I don't like is the Web 2.0 shine. Overall rating: 3.5/5
