Today's Springfield News-Leader has an article about Mary Herschend, her family, and the development of SDC. I didn't know that Jack and Pete were half-brothers.
Good article. Pat Luce was a teacher in the high school when I attended, never knew she was related to the Herschends.
Tremendous article. Lots of great little details I have never heard before, and a lot of other things that are good to be reminded of.
I particularly liked this section:
QuoteMary knew exactly what she wanted. The buildings had to be as true to the original design as possible, but they were built to a 7/8ths scale to "create charm," as Rick Todd, a 40-year SDC executive, recalls. An attraction that was inauthentic would not honor the people and the land that Mary had come to know and love. She was not going to lower her standards.
"Mary had an unbelievable vision about the park that none of us got for a long time," Rick Todd remembered. "The idea that we were going to be true to the theme and remain uniquely consistent really came from Mary."
I came on here to post the same article. :-)
<stir the pot> I wish they would stick to Miss Mary's vision a little more </stir the pot>
That pot can never be stirred enough!!!
