Title: Scattered Antiques
Post by: shavethewhales on December 06, 2014, 09:58:18 PM
Something that's become very obvious this season is that the scattered antique artifacts that once filled the walls and wooded areas of the park are rapidly disappearing. A lot of this stuff is authentic mining equipment and antiques from the 1880s to the early 1900's, but it's been left out to rust for so long that some of it got to the point where it's unrecognizable, and now the park is simply tossing a lot of it. On the same note, a lot of the original hand painted signs and things painted on the sides of buildings are being slowly removed/replaced/painted over. While some of the new stuff is nice, the old stuff is has much more charm.

So I'm putting out a request. I'd like to start a gallery of this stuff so we can appreciate what's there before it's gone. If you have any photos to contribute

Don't know if the park still has this, but back in my day there was an Atmosphere Barn they kept antiques and props in. I was granted access a few times in 1981 to carry some props in for storage. I remember seeing various antiques and it was an eye opener for me. I imagine they have lightened up on spreading this stuff around park as a cost cutting measure. Also it would be more difficult to find stuff to use. Many times after something is put out at a location, it's there for years. Props and old buggies at the front of the diving bell sat outside year ro u nd, but sometimes the buggies got wrapped in plastic, or were moved inside for winter. The little playground next to the diving bell was used hard by kids and with exposure to the elements, the play pieces had to have maintenance, and replacement parts. When the decision was made to revamp to lost river, the playground died a long slow death in 1983 and 1984. The big mining buckets used on the square and at Flooded Mine over the years finally rusted out a b d were scrapped. The general store had shelves of antiques thar were removed as Cowboy Jepps moved in there, and a nyone remember the fake locations back in the 1960s and early 1970s like the full barber shop, or the mayors office and bank that had antiques in them?

Not really an antique, but does anyone remember the little child's-size cabin that was outside the former Toy Shop (which is now Woodcarvers)? I remember Dad picking me up over the fence so I could go play in there, they even decorated it with garland at Christmas. I always thought it was my cabin. Anyone remember it or have a pic??
I have videos of me playing in there, but don't know of any pics.
