Why are the women wearing those big dresses they must be misrable in the heat?
^It is all part of the theme. That is what women wore in the 1880's.
The women working the water rides had some weird ones. The skirts were little short and they had their legs covered up by something I don't know what it is called. Had to feel sorry for those two girls in the towers watching the Lost River.

SDC certainly has a lot of returning female citizens each year, so it can't be that bad.
the costumes worn by the people near water are 1880s swimsuits. they wear bloomers and dresses. they are one of my favorite costumes on park. the people on the towers have a fan with them and water and its shady they are one of the good positions! lol
Working in the cave however is nice.
I wore long sleeves and a vest and STILL stood over 300+ degree kettles and loved every minute of it. This is exactly why the citizens of SDC are the best in the world!!!

Why 1880s what happened back then?
It goes back to what has defined this area for over a hundred years. That is the hard working, honest, yet simple folk who inhabit these hills and would give you the shirt off their back. These are the people that Harold Bell Wright described in his book, The Shepherd of the Hills, which started bringing people to visit the area in the early 1900's. It's also what captured the imaginations of Hugo and Mary Herschend who moved here from Chicago in the 1940's. They took over the operation of Marvel Cave Park, and later created Silver Dollar City with the interest of preserving the flavor of these people who basically lived off the land and made every thing they needed by hand. The way they chose to do that was by making the theme of the park that of a small mining town of the 1880's.
