Later on this month MODOT will be starting on a major construction project on 76 between the Highroad and 265. The road is going to be relocated further south to eliminate a major curve. Rock blasting will be involved. More details from KY3 and Hometown Radio:

No extra lanes? if not, a complete waste of opportunity.
I'm glad their doing this. I 've hated that curve for the last 48 years.
the way I read it and look at the maps.... will be 4 lane from 465 to 265........
I'm glad someone else saw that sandy, I didn't want to be the one to have to point it out.
Swoosh... NP
;D
I really hate to see all these massive road cuts all over the ozarks. We are steadily destroying a big part of what makes this part of the country special. As a civil engineer, I understand that it's all in due course of the necessary progress of infrastructure, but I think an extra curve is worth keeping vs. obliterating the landscape.
But on the positive side, that's one less massive bottleneck. It will sure make things easier, and I'm sure the park has looked forward to this for a long time.
I totally agree with you Shave
BUT in reality the bottleneck/traffic problem starts "EAST" of 265... So we will see if it really helps or not.. ???

two lane left turn at the Indian Point light.
four lane from the high road to the 376 intersection
Speaking of 76 back in the old days, here is Grady Nutt from the Hee-Haw Theater. :)
The first couple of minutes are just about Branson, and then he goes into his regular routine.
R.I.P., I always loved his stuff. It's hard to believe he died in 1982. :-\

That's a blast from the past! My dad used to make us sit in the living room and listen to him. The better show was watching my dad laugh uncontrollably.
Thanks for posting the Grady Nutt album. I was working at Hee Haw Theater that night in '82 when it was recorded. Was fortunate to personally know Grady and his wife and 2 sons. Very good people. All of us at the theater were heartbroken about his passing, it was quite a shock.
Back on topic ... KY3 has a few more details. Project does start on 7/21 and most of the work will be done at night. Since the project is scheduled for a mid December completion, the night work may make it a bit challenging getting to and from SDC for an Old Time Christmas.

QuoteHee Haw is never off topic.
I second this comment! ;D
Check out my Hee Haw Theater tribute site on Facebook. Go to FB and type in Hee Haw Theater and it should pop right up. NOW...back to topic! Ha!
We drove past the construction area, and I agree - the character is lost with one less curve. That's part of a trip that makes vacation different from home.

We went through there this weekend and I was pretty disappointed. I'm sure it will help traffic flow, but I've always though it was so cool to be driving through the woods and then here's a stoplight in the middle of nowhere. Yes, I'm easily amused. I did think however that was a particularly pretty section of 76. Now it will just be another flat shadeless stretch of road.

When is that supposed to happen?
working on it now Larson, they are taking our the curve, and as I understand it, widen shoulders and then restripe road.. will be "4 lane" from 265 to SDC turn-off..
1 lane for SDC (I believe) the other will go straight through for "local" traffic..
I just hope it helps with the flow like MODOT thinks it will..
Here are some pics on road cont.. some from 2 weeks ago, and some 2 days ago....

It looked like it was being worked on when I was there in July. There was equipment removing trees and bringing in dirt just a bit to the west of the highroad/76 intersection. I hate to see the curve taken out. It is our favorite part of the trip that let's us know we are nearing our destination as we pull the trailer to the Wilderness.
