My husband and I have enjoyed geocaching for years. It is actually how he proposed to me.
I saw a post from a couple years on here where someone asked about geocaching in Branson. I know that there is a virtual cache in SDC, which I am now planning to try to find the next time I am there.
It's probably a really silly question, but is there any way that we could have actual geocaches in the city?
Is there anyone that is there more often than me that is interesting in doing more virtual caches? If I was there more often, I would love to do some virtual caches for people to find, but it looks like we won't make it back until December, and it'll only be for a day. Not very much time to make plans for virtual caches.
I would really enjoy looking for some, though!
We found the cache there a few years ago. I would think it would be difficult to do many in the city. Even for virtual caches, you have to have decent gps coordinates and it is so hard to achieve that in the hills. The reason the one there works is due to it being on top of a hill. As for container caches, they would be mugged in no time. It would be cool, but they wouldn't stay in tact long
You're right. Just wishful thinking, I guess.
I am an avid geocacher myself. Although, I would love to find some geocaches in the city, there are several obstacles that would make it impractical.
1. Although existing virtual geocaches have been grandfathered in, geocaching.com no longer accepts new virtual geocaches.
2. To place a physical geocache container inside the park you would need the expressed permission of park management.
3. To even access the geocache, you would have to purchase a ticket to enter the park.
4. The geocache would have to be maintained by a local resident, or someone with easy access to the park.
5. The better alternative is to setup a Waymark at the park. Although granted this one doesn't come with the "found it smiley." :)
I am an avid geocacher, in fact, I am trying to plan a trip to Branson just to find caches.
There are other geocaching sites that do allow virtual caches. They aren't near as popular as geocaching.com. On opencaching.us and opencaching.com you can still "hide" them. Not many people use either of these sites though.
I was thinking about asking Paige if I could hide a traditional at the hotel. :)
Sure Adairmd, why not? Sounds like it would be fun! ;D
