Title: Run to the Lights 2012
Post by: rubedugans on September 02, 2012, 09:19:08 PM
On November 9, 2012 at 10:15 pm the 7th annual Run to the Lights will take place at Silver Dollar City. Run to the Lights is "the premier fall race in Ozark Mountain Country. The race benefits  The Caring People, an organization that reaches out to Single Moms with unconditional love founded by Silver Dollar City co-owners JoDee and Peter Herschend."

I have never been healthy enough (I was a collegiate runner and was/ am injured for 5 years, not a smoker or overweight!) and my planning never matched up with the race registration. The enrollment/ registration opened up yesterday for anyone that wants to take on the city in a race has very little time to get registered!

That's gonna hurt, whacking your way through those turnstiles during a race!  ;D

Well it is almost 24 hrs now from race time, and I just might make it after all! I have been going to a chiropractor for a month now, and am now, after 5+ years of post collegiate running, able to run again with minimal pain. My longest run has been 2.5 miles, and it was by no means a blistering pace! I am going to run tomorrow to finish the race, my goal is under 25 minutes (I know for some that is great, for a guy that finished 3.1 miles in the 16 minute range, this is 3 minutes slower per mile than my peak), but really I want to have fun. As long as I finish, and I am not in agonizing pain, I will be happy.

I have not been this excited to go to the city since the 50th anniversary festivities. and before that...who knows! Temps are supposed to be in the low 50's and that is great running weather! 10:15 tomorrow cannot come soon enough!

The next day was not so fun, and still feeling aches and pains...this was my first race in 5+ yrs, and I feel every ounce of it. Just worried now that I set my rehab back a few months! My knee id KILLING ME, and it wasn't hurting before the race...damn.

i know, i know, and ego gets me in trouble more often than not. Since I used to be fast, and my wife is faster than me now, I have trouble giving up things without being competitive. Hopefully it is just a strain, and I'll be back in a week or two. I have narrowed it down to a couple of injuries...
pes anserine bursitis (I have had this before in the same region)
runner's knee( yep had this before as well)
MCL strain...never had it, don't want it!

Wifey who is an exercise scientist thinks it is a case of runner's knee...so we'll go with that. Seeing what my chiro says this afternoon.

Still it was an amazing run, 2,000 people total, but got to run unhindered through the lights and empty roads of the park. It was beautiful, and breathtaking. I will be back next year if I have to walk!

Sand, you could do it!  The hubs pushed me in a wheelchair and we made it!  Yep, including Cardiac Hill!  And, I'm sure we're older than you!!! LOL  For the first year ever, I didn't take any photos.  Rube, I can't wait for you to post yours!  If you google "Run to the Lights" there are usually a couple hundred photos posted.  I heard a reporter state the ky3.com was also posting photos.

if we ould get golf carts involved, then we could use How-do's video cameras, mount them to the roll bar and have coninuous coverage...LOL!!!

Here in StL a race management company does a virtual race course for their races, and does just that, they mount a camera on the gator, and drive the course, stopping at various sections to talk about turn arounds, mile markers etc. I was wishing they would have done that!

I am feeling much better today, and the chiro said it was just me adding 50% more distance than my usual run and doing so under duress/ race atmosphere where many other variables need to be factored in, warm up, stretching, 4 hr drive beforehand...lots of things as a coach I would not have my athletes do...but shh...don't tell them I told you all that!

I hope to get a chance to post my race recap, with a few (not too many...as I was running!) but a good run down (literally) of the happenings. My photo account is down right now, but I am going to try again tonight.

If you all need a fix of race talk right now...here is my wife's blog. She writes a pretty successful blog about training, being a mom, and frozen custard. You can see her side of the race here (hers talks about the race a lot itself, mine will mostly talk about the city!)

We left St. Louis at 4:30pm-we had to get off work before we could go have fun!, and after picking up my Mom, we were on the road with sandwiches in hand by 5:00pm. Packet/ race number pickup was until 9pm, so I was going to have to floor it the whole way...The wind was terrible, and the little girl in the backseat did not want to go quietly...Needless to say we were stopped in St. James MO changing a diaper, and hoping I could make up the lost time. Aside from worrying if we would even be able to run if we had no race numbers...The drive went rather smoothly.

We arrived at the City at about 9:20 and parked in the preferred lot, threw our gear on (it was 64* outside, so it was pretty easy) walked right into the park (no turnstyles which was WEIRD!) just the dividers that the workers stand behind to take tickets. We made our way up to the Square which was bustling with live music and then the Christmas Tree show. No ropes up, able to go pretty much anywhere while waiting. The festivities started with Pete Herschend talking about the charity, and then the race directors gave directions for the start of the race.

We exited the park through Cave Rd (out next to Brown's) and headed out past First Aid, the break room, the Cave photo spot, the start was at the top of the hill which led up and out the access road to the Parking Lot. The pathway led down the tram path to the bottom of the hill by Lot 2, Across to Lot 6 which zig zagged a few  times the UP the hill onto SDC Parkway (The road the you enter on) back into the park through Cave Rd, Right past Brown's and on down around GE, back up past the Pottery Shop, down around the Riverfront, under the train tracks, and up Hill Street to the Square and around once into the Finish.

All that said, it was amazing, 2,000 people in the park, lights on, running with my wife, it was a dream. I would have loved to have made it last longer. Afterwards I was able to meet Pete (who gave me a banana) and some bottled water. Cookies were plentiful, Hot Chocolate and Wassail were flowing like water, and the mood was just pure holiday fun. I cannot wait until next year!

Someone here can offer assistance, I'm sure. I've got limitations myself when it comes to understanding the inner workings of the mind of a computer, so I set up a Flickr site to post photos. Consider that, too!

I use photo bucket, and once a photo is uploaded, you will see on the right sdide of the screen, a menu that gives a direct link to the photo... click the insert image button on the screen to have (//) appear, and paste the direct link in the middle of the two middle brackets! easy enough
